When I normally start a game, I'm always a div 2/3 or conference manager as I like to work my way to the Premiership.
Anyways, I chose Chesterfield in div 2 mainly because they had 4 excellent defenders whom I could use in a normal flat back 4. It was because of these 4 strong and determined defenders that I chose to play a diamond formation with only the 2 strikers running left and right.
As the season went on both my strikers were on fire. I had a classic combination of a) someone who is leathal in the air, and b) someone who can score on the ground.
It was always between me and Blackpool, I was in second position for literally 40 games and it was only in the last 6 that I overtook Blackpool and won the Div 2 title with 1 game to spare. Funny thing was Blackpool were my last opponents, Chesterfield being the away team, so although there wasn't anything to play for I still enjoyed beating them 1 - 0 which capped off an excellent season imo.
After winning the title I start to search for the real bargain players, free transfers, end of contracts, that kind of thing as I was fairly limited with the amount of money I had to spend (even if I did have huge amounts, I'm always reluctant to fork out x amounts of cash, even on wages etc).
So I'm on the search for players screen, and look for Free Transfers, I decide to sign a couple of good defenders for cover, reason being was because my normal 4 were good, but the others wern't.
I also decided to sign 2 attacking players, 1 who would play on the wing and had the ability to dribble with pace and good balance. I came across Marinelli who had been released by Borough on a free. I remember having him on loan in another game and his stats were decent, not only this but he could play both left and right...perfect! Snapped him up on something like 3k per month wages...what a find.
I also started to search through other free transfers whom had their stats hidden, I came across a guy who had been released by Arsenal, his name was Jerome Thomas. I took the chance of signing him, and paying 6k for his wages (Celtic and others wanted him, yet because I offered him first team footy he wanted to paly for me). Another bargain player, I couldn't understand why Arsenal released him, he was only 20 at the time.
Anyways, I'm having a fairly succesful season in Div 1, I'm winning and drawing more then I'm loosing and after the Christmas period I find myself in the play-off spots. End of season comes and I finish 6th...I was happy with that as it's a play-off spot. The winners of the division were Blackpool (so they went from Div 2 to the Premiership in 2 years). After beating Ipswich and some other team, I found myself in the Play-off Final against Prtsmouth (yes, they got relegated first year). This was awesome, I was winning 2 - 0 at half time and the attendance was something like 70k+ in the Millenium stadium...that equals a huge amount of cash from gate receipts...at least if I somehow lose I would have some cash to invest.
Anyway, I won the final which put me into the premiership, so both me and Blackpool had done the same, gone from Div 2 to the Premiership in 2 years...fairly impressive seeing as I had only bought free-players (Marinelli and Thomas were absolutely awesome, I also bought Foley-Sheridan at the start of the season to play behind the strikers).
Start of the Premiership and I'm 200 - 1 favourites of getting relegated...anyways, I start looking for some serious talent to help me out..however most of my team from Div 2/1 were still performing brilliantly, the good thing was that most of them were young so as they progressed the stats got better.
Here's the problem, my Stadium has a capacity of 7863 (which is tiny for the Premiership). I asked to expand the stadium some time before the end of last season, they finally get back to me and had some plans for expansion. Howver, I wasn't impressed with what they suggested...They said they would increase the stadium with 3k Seats...totalling my Stadium to just over 10k capacity. This work will finish in 26.12.2005 or something and I'm only about three weeks from that date. Naturally I will ask to expand again as I deffinately have the money from my careful financial handling etc.
I looked in the editor to see what the max capacity for expansion is, and it's terrible, the Stadium at max expansion only comes to about 15k capacity which isn't good enough if I wish to have increased wages and still make a profit.
So now I have a serious problem...I'm currently 1st in the Premiership after 9 games (don't ask me how, keeper has been playing well and a few bits of luck :P), and I want to make Chesterfield a Premiership team for the years to come, but if I can't get a large stadium should I quit and move on ?
It would be sad to move on, but I feel that if I want to progress to the major European tournaments I need large gate receipts week in week out.
Before anyone sais anything about Tactics/training etc they are all of my design, I see no fun at all in downloading other peoples tactics and training regimes. So I think I've done pretty good.
