Glove Italian style
Wednesday, 14 April 2004
By Paolo Menicucci
If there are two players who perfectly fit the ancient Roman saying that "Nemo profeta in patria" - meaning no one is a prophet in his own land - they are Chelsea FC goalkeeper Marco Ambrosio and his AS Monaco FC counterpart Flavio Roma.

Final meeting
In June 1993, the two custodians faced each other in the final of the Scudetto Primavera, the Italian youth cup, between Ambrosio's Atalanta BC and Roma's S.S. Lazio. Atalanta, who fielded Alessio Tacchinardi, Domenico Morfeo and Thomas Locatelli, won 6-0 on aggregate against a Lazio team featuring Alessandro Nesta and Marco Di Vaio.

Career blips
"Tonight Ambrosio saved even the insects who were flying close to him," said Atalanta's then director of sport Giorgio Vitali of the goalkeeper's star performance. But neither Ambrosio nor Roma's careers subsequently went as planned.

Serie A rejection
The 30-year-old Ambrosio has only 20 Serie A appearances to his name while Roma, 29, played only 32 times in Italy's top flight. Last week, however, both men helped their clubs to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, a stage notable for its absence of Serie A teams.

Crucial saves
Ambrosio made some crucial saves as Chelsea beat London rivals Arsenal FC 3-2 on aggregate, while Roma aided Monaco in their shock defeat of Real Madrid CF. The two keepers could now be on opposite sides in the semi-final.

Long-awaited breakthrough
It has not been plain-sailing for Ambrosio, though, since joining Chelsea on a free transfer from AC Chievo Verona last summer. He signed his three-year contract before Roman Abramovich's arrival at Stamford Bridge and broke into the starting lineup only after injuries to No1 Carlo Cudicini and fellow summer buys Neil Sullivan and Jürgen Macho.

Previous highs
His biggest games previously had been a Coppa Italia quarter-final for Chievo against AC Milan and a UEFA Cup tie between UC Sampdoria and Athletic Club Bilbao in 1997. "My whole world has changed. I never imagined playing in these matches," he said. "I have worked very hard these past few months and have been waiting for this chance for a long time. I was eager to show Chelsea fans and the club that I was good enough."

Monaco move
Roma started his career with Lazio in 1991 but had to wait until 1999 to make his Serie A debut with Piacenza FC. He played 32 matches that season but failed to help his club avoid relegation. After playing the following campaign in Serie B, he decided to move to the Stade Louis II, where he soon established himself as Monaco's first-choice keeper.

'Good chance'
"This is the highlight of my career but I am never satisfied," Roma said. "It is fantastic to defeat Real Madrid but now we have a good chance against Chelsea. If we reach the final, it will be an amazing achievement but once you are there and see that trophy, how can you not try and win it?"

Feeling fine
He added: "The fact both myself and Ambrosio have reached the semi-finals is proof that we could have had success in Italy. However, it also means we feel fine where we are now, and that the Italian school of goalkeepers is really good."

Another encounter?
Their compatriot Cudicini could yet recover from a broken hand in time to meet Monaco, but if Ambrosio plays, he and Roma could be having flashbacks to another two-legged tie more than a decade ago.

Gonna be good!

It will be interesting to see if Monaco can break Chelsea's defense. Only on a bad day for Chelsea have teams scored more than 1 goal against them.

Chelsea forwards need to step it up. None have been consistent enough this year. Its not due to Ranieri's tinkering at all either. Injuries, and simple ineffective play by players. Hopefully Mutu gets some time to get back into form after his injury today against Everton. Crespo should be feeling good after his wonder strike from last week.

Chelsea v/s / vs Monaco will most likely be a dull first leg. Chelsea haven 't scored/conceeded a goal since they won against Arsenal, so I doubt that they will score one now. Having said that, they never scored a goal against Stuttgart but won (LUCKILY) on an own goal.

Im going to the Stade Louis II on Tuesday for €30 :rockman:

Monaco are generally strong at home in the champions league, but if the AS fans actually get behind the team the atmosphere can be quite intimidating for a 20000 seater stadium.

I predict:
Monaco 2 (Giuly, Morientes) - Chelsea 1 (Duff)

northstar
19-04-2004, 07:02:PM
Duff and Gallas are out with fever :S

SO I am guessing Desa and Mario in defense, and Joe Cole in for Duff. Lampard, Makalele and Parker make up the rest of midfield.

Crespo and Gudds up front

Not sure what is the news for Monaco.

Just like the commentator said Ranieri tinkered waaaaay to much. He made strange subs at strange times. After the first half im sure everyone thought chelsea was going to win this game, but then Ranieri brought on a unfit Veron, Huth and Hasselbaink. If it aint broke don't fix it and he made subs after a dominating display in the first half.

Anyway congrats to Monaco...what a player Morientes is, i bet Madrid would love to have him back now.

This is just ****ed up, after this game there is no doubt in my mind that Ranieri is out next season no matter what the result at Stamford Bridge. I'm hoping for a miracle in the return leg because Chelsea cannot score 2 goals in a game without receiving one against a good team we're gonna need to be perfect. Some horrible subs by Ranieri today as well, bringing Huth on  this is not EPL this is the ******* Champs League semi-final, and Gudjohnsen should of never played in the second half he was complete junk, Veron came on leaving the left wing with nobody on there and well he didn't do **** he was horrible and Hasslebaink had a couple of chances that he missed like an idiot omg i cant believe this im pissed :kader:

I thought the opposite. Crespo was on his game and needed more passes to him. Gudjohnson wasted so much possession by losing the ball somehow most of hte time. :S

Really crap defending and goalkeeping let Monaco score those.

Its crazy to lose, but its not over. 2-0 and Chelsea still advance.

Maybe Cudicini will be fit because Ambrossio is OK, but not at the same level. Too many mistakes.

And the ref was crap. Ruined the game with his dumb decisions.

I just got back from Monaco!

Great play from the lads. That Makelele dive was so obvious, he got a bitch slap from Zikos, looked where the referee was, and went down like a ******* cissy. If Zikos got a red I am at pains to see how Makelele didnt get one! I just watched some highlights and it turns out that Morientes was getting flattened, punched, elbowed by Desailly. All these French players in the Chelsea team are giving English football a bad name. :kader:

At least going down to 10 men made Monaco play like bitches: they harried and chased and I was really impressed with Monaco today. Morientes' goal was great, and Nonda did well (thank you Ambrosio!) to sneak in a late one. I'm glad to see that we Monaco didn't let us down today!

My men of the match: (opposed to man of the match ;) )
- LUDOVIC GIULY: Played really well, as a lone striker after the sending off he gave the 3 chelsea defenders a real game. Pacy, always made great forward runs and great skll.

- JEROME ROTHEN: Delivered brilliant balls from set play and from the wing. Very threatening all the time.

- PATRICE EVRA: Looked solid on the left and linked up well with Rothen.

Great victory for Monaco who in my eyes are favorites to win the whole CL. They managed to defeat Chelsea 3-1 even after they went down to 10 men in the 2nd half. The team stayed strong and Deschamps made a great sub in bringing on Nonda who scored in less then a minute.

Chelsea really should have tried putting more pressure on Monaco which it looked like they tried to by bringing on JFH for a defender but unfortunately they got caught flatfooted.

Anywayz I think that Monaco can go through unless Chelsea manage to pull a Deportivo and with such a crazy CL this year who knows?

What a performance by Monaco :wootman: :rockman:

Makelele is such a ******* dirty diving cheat. he barely got touched and he went down like he was shot. some shoddy reffing at times, but overall good. desailly and morientes must have some sort of off-field grudge b/c they were a few steps away from a fist fight:o . Giuly is once again the inspirational captain who kept the teams spirits running high and that made the difference for me. and that morientes finish:hump: . Frank Lampard turning on the style, Parker and Gronkjaer did nothing but give bad passes and crosses.

I had a bet with my girlfriend-who's a Chelsea supporter-that Monaco would win. I can finally stop hearing about Arsenal losing to Chelsea(H)

I am disappointed at the marking of Morienties in the 2nd goal. What was Terry doing? Where was Bridge? 2-1 would of been a much better looking scoreline but it is 3-1. Winning 2-0 is not such a mammoth task, we can do it. I have complete faith that Chelsea will not make the same mistakes again.

should be an open attacking game with both sides looking for goals. makelele's out for you guys-that's quite a big loss. for monaco zikos is out, but i thought cisse would start anyway since he's a better player this season, IMO. anyway-good luck to both teams:D

I hope Makelele never plays for Chelsea again. Period.

He has no class.

yea, Gronkjaer is sh!t down the left. he's so one-footed it's not even funny:| he did nothing good or even basic the whole game, just like one good cross

since Monaco defeated Real i picked them to win the champions league and they better do so now.

i feel bad for Ranieri though, but i hate Chelsea though, not a good combination.

I think Deportivo will be the CL winners. Monaco wouldn't have a change against them. But I also think that Chelsea will pull something out of their ass and still go to the final.

The only thing that this game determined to me is that

Huth = Crap

Other than who knows what will happen. I mean Monaco hasn't had the best record on the road this year.

very bad performance of Chelsea. a shame for English football. they played really bad especially when they have a numerical advantage.(that should have been the contrary). I think Chelsea don't have a strikers at all.
Crespo keeps waiting balls in the front(sometimes effective but most of the time disappionting role).
Gudjohnssen tried to play some goos balls but were unsuccessful.

They should have kept Forsell this season.

They replace Gronkjaer for Veron and Huth for Parker;i think these were very bad subs.Didn't also see Hasselbank doing anything at all.

I generally find Huth quite good but yesterday ,he was crap.It seems that he was playing an unsual role of left midfield wing when he was put on the pitch. His deleveries were bad and he made lots of fouls.

And Veron, very slow and loses too many balls.Should have brought on Joe Cole instead.

Ambrosio made a good stop to Morientes header in the begining of the first half but he left a lot to desire for the third Monaco goal.

Flavio Roma didn't have any real work to do yesterday although Monaco had one man down.

they must now pull back 2 goals to qualify now.hope that Duff will be able to plat next to give more attacking edge.

I see Porto winning the cl.

He is 19. I couldn't tell because he seemed to be moving around out there with all the vigor of a 45 year old.

Feel free to bag Arsenal again when Man City makes the InterToto Cup, if it even still exists. Oh, wait. They'll probably be in the First Division next season, so they won't even have a chance at that.

maybe Mutu was angry about not playing and stuck something in his boots:p

EDIT: Huth seems quite unenthusiastic for a 19 year old. he was huffing and puffing like 10 minutes after coming on. and he had done no sprinting:| :|

Ranieri cost us the game, but I want him to stay at Chelsea. I don't want O'Leary at Chelsea despite him being a good manager.

No you don't. Chelsea lost because Ranieri tried putting 3 strikers on at one stage after taking Melchiot out when we had a 1-1 scoreline away but for some reason put one of the strikers at RM and a RM in defence? That being Hasselbaink and Parker.

That is the reason Chelsea lost, because we tried to play with 3 strikers.
