skull 30-04-2004, 10:13:AM Carlos "El Pibe" Valderrama (Colombia) and Diego Armando Maradona (Argentina) two of the gratest South American Futbol (Soccer) players ever... I know I should have mentioned Pele he is at the top with Maradona... Pele was a complete athlete and a skillfull soccer palyer, Maradona was and artist of the sport with awesome skills and Valderrama was an Incredible midfielder with an outstanding panoramic view of the field and his players.. I know some of you are dying to post your European stars.. so please go ahead shows your best... :)
Spurs4Life 30-04-2004, 10:15:AM Zinedine Zidane is better than both of them. He has played in a harder era, won everything for club and country and wasnt pumped on steriods to do it.

No im not wrong, just because u think Maradona is better don't make u right, it's a matter of opinion. Zidane had more class than Maradona, he didn't handball the ball to win a match and he wasnt taking performance enhancing drugs to play better, Zidane wasnt a cheat. My opinion and i think Zidane is better than the two u mentioned. Although Valderrama had class, he is the Columbian version of Stanley Matthews, he was a legend.

You are right when it comes to a matter of oipinions, but you are wrong whe you say this era is harder than previous eras, sure times have changed and futbol has evolved but this does not mean this era is harder than previous eras... Now my opinion Zidane is a great player but not to be put in the category of Pele, Maradona, Beckenbabuer, Cruyff, DiStefano...

Yeh in your opinion ;). In many people's eyes he is the greatest player of all time, he was named the greatest player of the last 50 years by Fifa 2 weeks ago ;). Just because someone is hailed as the greatest don't mean they should always hold that title. Yes this era is tougher, football is more professional now, players are bigger, stronger, quicker and under more pressure and under the media spotlight alot more than in previous decades, Im not taking anything away from the legends u have mentioned, just that Zidane has brought the game on to a new level.
Spurs4Life 30-04-2004, 11:07:AM --------------------------Banks
---Cafu-----------Baresi---------Maldini-------------Carlos
--Cruyff-------B.Moore........Zidane..........Matthews (was a RM)
--------------------Pele-----------------R.Baggio
That would be my all time team, im not saying they are all the best, but i think that's a great team.

This era is tough to the advances of this era, but you can not make it tougher to previuos eras, back then the game was played with the advances of that time and the rules of those eras evolved just like man does, saying this is like saying our times are tougher than the cave men times... In my opinion you are totally wrong by comparing eras to make players better, if that the case Maradona and Pele brought the game to new levels way better for their time... Lets look at the game itself, compare balls, shoes, fields, rules... all of these were much tougher back then, balls were harder and heavier, Boots were not as advaced, fileds were diferent and tougher and the rules did not protect the player like they do today... so was it tougher before?? or is it now... anyways there is no way you can compare nor claim one wera was tougher..

You are right in many ways which is why people say "era's shouldnt be compared" which is true it isnt really fair in a way because in tennis for example John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg would get owned by Pete Sampras, because the game has evolved to a new level. But without comparing era's which is wrong in some ways, the fact remains to me, is that i think Zidane is better than Maradona. Maradona was a cheat and a drug cheat, which is what ill remember, not the grace he had on the field. Will Michael jackson be remembered for his music when he dies?, i would suggest no.
Pele on the other hand is a different story. He scored over 2,500 league goals (In South America) and won world cups, he can challenge Zidane in my eyes as the number one player of all time in whatever ere you compare them in.

Maradona was on epedrine, not steroids. Get a clue, and your English hate is showing, thread highjacker.
Steroids do not make you into any better shape or give you stamina. Dont talk if you dont know. A person taking steroids still has to TRAIN the same amount, but will just gain more muscle mass which is not going to give you the CONTROL and FINE SKILL that Maradona had.
For your BS posts, I hope Spurs are relegated.

Comparing Maradona to Michael Jackson ?!
Maradona had drug problems and he did what he did to himself. Michael Jackson molested young boys.
Comparing the 2 is absolutely ridiculous.
You may remember him for his drug problems and not his football because you're a douche.... but those of us who have seen him play will remember him for his footballing skills.
Maradona IS one of the greatest ever. I bet you have never seen any of his games for Napoli and if you have, you're just too biased to accept it.

Vinnie Jones 30-04-2004, 08:38:PM How can you judge his carreer just because of a handball? If he is considered worldwide to be the 2nd best player of all times do you think he only cheated or took drugs? I saw him play for Argentina and Napoli and he was a masterfull player. He had wonderfull technic, flair and he was a very intelligent player. He was a natural team leader and was magical even in the hardest conditions. It seems to me that you are very young to even know what he achieved and you prolly only saw him play in Us 94 when he was in the lower point of his carrier. When he came to Napoli the club won 2 championships thanks to him. He did wonders on a modest club which was miles away from the top clubs in Italy, and believe me Napoli had alot of limitations ( you can see what happened to the club when Maradona left).
I know that everyone is entitled to their opinion but the way you describe Maradona is just dispicable. Zidane is a great player but he is no where near Maradona.

Shindig 30-04-2004, 08:53:PM You still can't deny Diego's ability on the ball. Anybody who's seen his famous warm-up for Napoli (or Boca) will see what I mean.
Kicking a ball whilst his shoes remain untied. What a fat genius. He may have played in a different era but there were so many greats in that period.

First of all England have won a world cup. We have also been in 2 semi finals and in 1990 if we beat Germany in the penalty shoot out we would of won in the final. Second of all a opinion can't be wrong, saying Man United won the league is wrong because that aint a fact, but saying Zidane is better is a matter of opinion. Ok Mate, did I mentioned Colombia at all... This is why people are getting upset at your responses, you gear things the wrong way... if it comes to that in todays Futbol its unpredictable to say who can win the world cup... but that is not the argument nor I said you didn't desrve to win the cup, Germany deserved it just as much, but indeed that goal never went in in my opinion...
