View Full Version : This is Football/Soccer (again)
Sorry to bring this up again but Im still enjoying Sony's This is Soccer on the playstation. I havent had a single 5-5 draw in over a weeks play. There are parts of the game that are not as good as the Fifa series (choice of camera angles, management options etc) but the gameplay is much better than FIFA 2000. Im used to the look and feel of the game and I tried Fifa 2000 again a few hours ago and didnt bother to finish the game I was playing, I took the disc out and went back to T.I.F Its not the perfect game but on world class level it isnt high speed ping pong and it is really tough to win on that level.
Hire it and see if its worth a go
PolishPower 15-12-1999, 07:16:AM Dude where the heck did you get this game? I also started playing a game in FIFA 2000, and didnt even bother to finish it, (it was so bogus watching Cruyff score a hat-trick vs Germany 74 before the 20th minute).
Also what do you mean management options are not as good?
Cecco 15-12-1999, 11:13:AM I bought a copy of This Is Football last weekend and I must say that it's way way better than Fifa 2K, the only problems that I'm having is crossing the ball in the penalty area, most of the times that I do this the ball ends up in the goalkeepers arms. And one more thing, I've noticed that the opposing team usually scores the same way over and over again, in the lower left or right hand corner, do you have the same problems, can you let me know how to cross the ball with more precision?
P.S. Uefa striker is also brilliant!
Thanks
Polish Power I will tomorrow try and write a decent (amateur) evaluation of the game and try and point out all the good bits and bad bits in it. With respect to management oprions, you only get to choose a formation and either balanced, attack or defence styles. There are no other things apart from putting players in positions you want. Im in New Zealand and it was released down here on December 2nd.
Cecco, with respect to the crossing, yep thats one of the dumb things, a cross automatically goes to the goalmouth within reach of the goalie if crossed from the "autocross zones" Try crossing from areas not quite so wide out and not so deep down the pitch, for example just near the corners of the penalty box. Use the R1 and circle buttons to cross and you retain a little control. The problem then becomes that its hard to get enough power to score from a header.
Also Cecco for a laugh try this....In custom section take a couple of players and drop their hieght and weight to the minimums, then take another player and put everything to maximum. You end up with dwarfs and giants on the pitch. Its hilarious.
Mike
GROBAR_OTAGO 16-12-1999, 02:11:AM ZZUB,
I also live in Aotearoa, but I cant find the game anywhere to rent out, I looked in Video Ezy and United Video and neither have it.
P.S I'm in Palmerston North
Has anyone in Australia seen this game? I rang my local video store (Bondi) but they don't have it.
I aint tried the shops yet but might try tonight.
Grobar, your best bet might be to go into a playstation game shop and ask to try it out on their playstation for a while. I recommend trying it first because what appeals to me may not suit others. The other bonus is that because its a Sony game its about 30% cheaper than other games, I think it cost me NZ$69.
OK here goes an attempt to write some form of review to give those who havent tried this game an idea of what its like.
Firstly I think people need to try this game before buying, what appeals to me may not suit others.
Graphics.
At first I didnt like how the game looks but it has grown on me to the point now that when I look at F2K I am disappointed. The stadiums look better, the angles during cut pieces mean you get to see the stadium and sky etc which gives an atmosphere of a big occaision. The framerate is really smooth and again it is far slicker than F2K in this respect. The players look good as well and there is variation in size and weight among players which is clearly visible. This also means that defending against Norways Flo at corners is harder work if you have shorter defenders.
Sound.
Im not hugely fussed by music etc in these games and have turned this option off and I cant remember what the soundtrack is like. The crowd noises and sound effects are excellent and believable, the crowd appears to react when you make a break or when the final whistle is near the crowd whistles and jeers. Good atmosphere created. The commentary isnt that great but its not poor either.
Options.
TIF has a pretty cool customise option for players and teams etc. You can create custom teams or edit existing teams and players. You cant transfer players but you can "copy" players from one team to another. One amusing feature is the ability to adjust players so that they are either incredibly tall, short, fat, skinny etc. The results are hilarious when you have one striker who looks like a midget and the other striker as a giant. You have control over a wide range of player attributes, possibly 20 or more individual attributes but you only get so many points to play with. If you are a weener like me and like to put yourself into the game with the best possible attributes, one method is to copy across a great player with high attribute levels, and then alter him to suit etc.
One disappointing aspect for me are the camera angles you can play with, there are three versions of sideline camera and three versions of end on, thats all, no others. The replay options however are excellent. You can save any replay of any part of a game if you wish. Also when you score the replay starts early enough so you get a decent amount of the build up.
There are a good selection of leagues to play. English, Scottish, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, French, Belgian and Portuguese. The international selections enable you to play mini competitions with teams from all of Fifa's confederations. There are world cup and custom league options as well. To gain entry to some of the special competitions available you have to win a league or trophy in world class mode. After a couple of weeks Im still struggling to consisitently win in world class mode. This game is a challenge on world class mode for me.
Controls
TIF uses F2K's tapping of the triangle button to sprint and has a nice big range of passes, chips, shots, headers, through balls, tackles and one two type options available that are pretty straightforward to master.
Gameplay.
This is the hard one to describe. Firstly there is no speed setting, its a set speed and it feels just perfect. Its not fast and frantic, its simply like normal pace. The pitches are of a decent size so that the play doesnt feel cramped. Passing and accurate passing is down to the user, the ball doesnt automatically go straight to the player and i often end up over passing or being too short on the pass. The through ball is excellent but to add realism it doesnt work every time you use it. Tackling is more realistic than other games and fouls etc occur at a more realistic pace, not every tackle or never at all. The only real complaint I have with the gameplay is with the crossing of the ball, it usually ends up in the goalkeepers arms right on the goal line if crossed from what sony refer to as the auto cross zones. Shooting requires lots of practice to get the amount of time holding the shoot button just right. Sadly there is no practice option. The game also tracks the history of your playing so after you have been playing a while you can see how many games you win, how many goals you score etc. The stats on goals scored by players isnt that great however. On world class level the AI doesnt simply speed up, in fact it doesnt increase its ability that way at all. It marks tighter and closes you down quicker. World Class level for me is really tough at this point, its a real challenge. Pro level is at this point just right for me but that will hopefully improve. You can beat defenders with various shimmies, twists, one two passes etc. Defending is also equally as good once you work out whether you prefer the AI to control which defender you get control of next or whether you do it yourself.
Overall I simply dont play F2K anymore on the playstation, Im playing this game. There are lots of little things where F2K is better (ie: things like team management of tactics etc and better choice of playing camera angles) but for me this game in terms of gameplay and realism is miles better than F2K.
Again try the game before you buy and also try and take into account that this game gets better the longer you have been playing.
Hope this helps.
GOONERBHOY 16-12-1999, 06:11:AM Mark,
Do you live in Manly?
Goonerbhoy
No, I live in Bondi, Why do you ask?
PolishPower 16-12-1999, 07:36:AM Few more questions:
Are there injuries in this game?
Do players get tired, and does the computer substitute for those players automatically?
Are there suspensions for yellow and red cards?
Can you control more than one team in a league?
But all this might be moot because i dont think this game will be released in USA!
FIFAfreak 16-12-1999, 07:55:AM This game sounds interesting, a few tweaks here and there in the next version and maybe you have a great game better than FIFA.
Only problem is whether Sony will release it under the title "This is Soccer" in the states? I doubt they will.
Players get tired and injured, you have control over replacing these players. The computer controlled team replaces its own. You have three options of referee strictness. Yellow and red cards are issued as well as resulting suspensions for too many yellow cards during a season or tournament. You can control more than one team in a season.
Finally my own personal opinion that may not be what other people who play the game will share is that This Is Football/Soccer is already better than the Fifa 2000 without the tweaks. The key thing for me is the gameplay, its already miles better than Fifa 2000, where it can be tweaked is in the other areas of the game. (Camera angles, transfers etc etc)
Cecco,
I also had problems at first with the computer team scoring in the near post all the time. It hasnt happened in ages now because I now know how to defend for that situation. I think that angle of attack is the computers first line of attack. The best way around that is to take manual control of which player goes to defend so you can choose another player to close down the winger.
bdincer 17-12-1999, 05:32:PM Is it possible to get this game in US? We need competition, maybe then EA will improve.
Cecco 17-12-1999, 08:24:PM ZZUB, thanks for the tip.
P.S. You're right, this game is miles and miles ahead of Fifa..it's great to be in the 90th minute and the score 0-0 or 1-0, very realistic game.
PolishPower 18-12-1999, 05:36:AM Is there a web site for this game?
If this game was here in USA i would buy it tomorrow. My advice is if you get FIFA 2000 for Christmas, don't even open it! return it for your money back or get another game cause FIFA 2000 is a stinker.
Please someone find out if this game is being released anywhere besides new zealand! Also what is the tv system in new zealand? is it NTSC? if it is we might be able to play this disc on american playstation.
GOONERBHOY 18-12-1999, 06:25:AM ZZUB,
Well fantastic review maybe you have a career in gaming reviews ahead of you. Anyway you sold me it sounds Brill. I`ve just got a few questions.
What do you mean by "copying" players instead of transfering?
Can you tell me what stadiums are in TIF especially if Parkhead is in it?
And i would also like to know where i can find some screen shots etc on the web?
I shouldn`t have any prob getting it if you did i`m just in Australia.
THANKS
Mark,
Don`t worry i`m just an arsehole. I used to live in sydney but i was so young it`s been a long time since the sydney days i got manly main and Bondi beach mixed up.
PolishPower 18-12-1999, 07:52:AM I got this off their web site, what do you think:
This is Football allows you to customise almost every aspect of the game. There are options to tweak practically everything from the amount of stubble on your centre-back's face to your team's home stadium.
Choose from over 2 000 possible kit designs (both home and away strips) and 30 club flag templates. You can tweak over 26 individual player attributes from height and weight, through to attributes such as passing vision, stamina, and grace under pressure. There are also over 5 000 player faces to select, with options to change skin colour and hair style as well as facial hair, and of course player names. Follow the transfer market by updating your team with new signings, or strengthen your squad with the players you would love to have. . . With the additional option of creating completely new players from scratch there are now no limits to team selection.
Tactically, you can select team formation and strategy, both before each game and in-game.
Also it doesnt say this on English version web site, but I went to the French language version and from what i could make out this game includes 13 real(classic?) stadiums, about 250 teams, 5000 players(international and clubs) major cup competitions, international and club(though doubt this means Libertadores is here), and most of the major leagues in Europe, they mention the European big 5. Also they have pics and it looks definitely better than FIFA 2000, you can see your clubs flags being waved in the stands! also the ball looks better.
Also this game must be better as far as realism cause some magazine gave review which said they played it for three hours and could not score once! which sounds like FIFA 99 a bit huh?
GOONERBHOY 18-12-1999, 11:52:AM Been to the site now, it looks good!
Couldn`t find the cheats everyone in their forum were on about what are the cheats?
Sorry but it doesnt feature Parkhead or any Scottish Stadium, it uses generic names for Stadiums such as England, France 1, France 2, Spanish 1, etc etc which are quite obviously Wembley, Stad de Paris etc etc.
Copying a player is in the customise player section. Basically you can copy a player from one team to another team so if you want Rivaldo playing for Hibs you go to the customise section and copy him across. The say for Authenticity that they havent let you customise the International teams so if your a big sad loser like me who wants to play in the Scotland line up you have to go into the customise team and create a Scotland custom team, copy the Scotland squad across into this custom team, change a player name for your own name, cheat on the attributes so you are gods greatest gift to football since JJ and play. However you wont be able to play with your created Scotland in any of the "official" international sections just the custom leagues and cups.
Sorry at this point I dont know where you can get screen shots from on the web yet but I will post tomorrow when i find a couple of online reviews.
Also sorry but NZ's tv system is the same as Australia and Britains so the games we get here wont play on US tv.
With respect to the reviewer complaining that it took 3 hours to score a goal well it is hard to score at first. You need to learn to apply the right amount of time on holding the shoot button to score. You need to learn all of the tricks in the control system to make space and time to get a shot off. You cant pick up this game and score first time you play. However once you start to learn how to play and this takes time to do the game gets better and better> I was disappointed at first and have become more and more hooked as the days go by. I think Im also hooked by a football game that doesnt claim to be perfect or the best and its creators are actually asking for feedback via their website. If ISS Evolution is as good as its previews say then I think EA will have to finally pull their fingers out and make a real effort. At last their is real competiton for them.
The cheats become available once you win leagues or cups in either pro or world class level. They range from making a couple of extra "stadiums" available (Beach and Park) to giving you a team of midgets or giants to play with etc etc
GOONERBHOY 19-12-1999, 02:27:AM ZZUB,
you mean the best player since Kenny Dalglish no disrespect to Jimmy though.
Thanks for answering my Q`s got more for u yipee.
Can you rename the Stadiums?
eg France to Paradise
Do you Support the Bhoys?
No sorry you cant rename the stadiums but thats probably a suggestion Dominic or whatever his name is on the TIF website would appreciate hearing.
Im actually an Aberdeen supporter, I was born there back in 1962 and came to NZ as a baby. I did get to go to the 1971 cup final between Aberdeen and Celtic while we were back in Scotland on holiday. I was 9 years old, I will never forget it. There were 117,000 people at Hampden that day when Joe Harper and Martin Buchan etc scored that upset victory. I still have the newspapers from the following day somewhere. You will hate me for that. To be honest I support any Scottish team anywhere, I havent grown up with that intense loyalty to one single club, part of living in a rugby country I guess. Jimmy Johnstone was a huge hero of mine though. I was living in London as a student for two years at the end of the 80's but have yet to get to go to a Scotland game. Maybe next year. My dad played for Abroath and the Scotland amateur team in 1961, the year before I was born, Les Stephen was his name but he shattered his leg after his 3rd game and never played again. I got to play in the NZ national league in the early 80's but wrecked my ligaments and that stuffed me. I was never as good as the old man though.
GOONERBHOY 19-12-1999, 06:52:AM Hmmm you got a thing with Sheep, Coming from babberdeen and moving to NZ. haha na just kidding. A dinny mind em` i like Jess and winters.
Your da was a pro eh. Mine reckoned he could have if he wanted too, it`s a shame he didn`t have the self confidence. He played premier in sydney and has a few best and fairest to show for it. he also played in NZ. But he`s got a few years on you so you probably don`t know him.
He`s really encouraged me though, not that i needed it. I`m no JJ but without bieng too cocky i am no bad. I played rep a few times but they ask for too much money out of you so i get my recognition through league and School footy. Da`s takin me over to Scotland for a few trials in march-April so we`ll see how that goes. Were good pals with Jackie McNamara and he`s told me to give it a shot and me da`s good pals with jim jefferies (hearts manager) so we could check that out, at least i`ll know if i could have, something i think dad regrets.
Sorry to hear about your ligaments.
Gooner, good luck with the trials etc.
Here is a website with a not so flattering review of TIF and also it contains screenshots. The screenshots are taken from television and are no way as vibrant as the game looks. Still it will give you a good idea of how it looks
http://video.gamespot.co.uk/stories/ps/reviews/0,8326,2388908,00.html
If you have PSX and a MOD CHIP that lets you playing JAPANESE GAMES, please get WINNING ELEVEN 4.
THIS GAME IS THE BEST SOCCER GAME EVER MADE, IT HAS REAL GAMEPLAY ITS HARD TO SCORE AND EVERY KNOW AND THEN I GET A TIE PLAYING WITH THE CPU ON A 10 minutes match.
And the fouls are very well called partly to the good controll over tackling where you control the direction of it. If your past the last man of deffence and you get tackled from behind who tackles you gets a red card. Also the AI never cheats no matter how high you set the AI, if they make a foul the referee will call it.
But if you dont have a MODCHIP for JAPANESE games wait for the american version tahts coming out on march2000, or if you like get the older version ISSS98 rpo
Is WE4 the game we will know of as ISS Evolution when it is released in February?
Cecco 20-12-1999, 03:14:AM ZZUB, yes Winning eleven 4 will be called ISS EVOLUTION here in Europe.
I can't wait, but TIS is also a brilliant game.

PolishPower 21-12-1999, 05:38:AM About that review at Gamespot this same reviewer called FIFA 2000 nearly perfect, so how can you take anything this guy says seriously? So he had Chelsea win the league undefeated and he calls this unealistic, how about West Ham winning the league in FIFA 2000? thats realism?, and where is the mention of the ridiculous high scoring in FIFA 2000? If I didnt know better Id say this guy was getting paid off by EA...
Man I hope you guys get to play this game soon so I can work out if Im some sort of loser who thinks This is Football is a good game or if Im right in believing its a better game than FIFA 2000.
How come a dipstick like me in some third world backwater like New Zealand gets this game before you lot?
Salamo 22-12-1999, 07:37:PM Well for starters how good is the game really? Are their any honest reviews on the game?
And I just read the latest SHOOT football mag with Owen on the cover and they say the game SUCKS (in other words).
u all know what guys .. after hearing n readings the review of the Winning Eleven 4 game, I've used my money of supposing to upgrading my PC to buy PlayStation n bought WE4.. I just bought the PS a week ago.. and I tell you guys.. WE4 is really a true soccer game..
FIFA2000 is no way nearer to WE4 at all.. way to go KONAMI !!!!
GOONERBHOY 22-12-1999, 11:37:PM I just bought one too, Get V-Rally 2 if you like Rally games. It`s awesome. Now all i need is the Perfect Football game. Just a shame there isn`t one so ill have to find out which has the least flaws.
Salamo
Most of the playstation reviews I have read have rated Fifa 2000 as a 9/10. Most of the reviews I have read for This is Football give it a 7/10
I have played every playstation soccer game produced and until now have thought that the World Cup 98 and Iss Pro soccer games on the playstation were about the best. Right now my opinion is that This is Football is out in front. I am looking forward to ISS Evolution but basically after Fifa 99, Fifa 2000 I have given up on EAsports producing a decent game. They completely ignored all the complaints about Fifa 99 and its insanely fast ping pong ball type gameplay.
The interesting thing to me here is that This Is Football is a great effort for a first time game and they want to hear from people how to make the game better. When have you ever seen on a website the head of EAsports Fifa series project manager asking for input, criticism, suggestions and thoughts?. If you go to www.playstation-football.com you will see a bulletin board where the Project Manager for This is Football is doing just that.
Personally after having played the game for a couple of weeks now Im finding the game gets better each time I play it. On world class level its a challenge without being a high speed button thrash, it has great graphics, the framerates are so smooth that when I look at my Fifa 2000 game, Fifa 2000 looks jerky. There is depth to the gameplay, controls and options. I will still be playing this game in 6 months and enjoying it.
There have been a couple of rave reviews for the game and some real bad reviews. Basically hire it first to see if you like it but remember one thing. This game doesnt reveal everything to you after one hour, it takes a couple of weeks to be able to play it really well. This game wont appeal to everyone. So far it is has the closest feel to how a real game feels like out of all the games I have played.
PolishPower 23-12-1999, 06:02:AM Ok two reviews I saw one guy complained he couldnt score for three hours it was so hard, and the other guy complained you could only play one round schedual(which was proven not true). Do I trust these reviewers who spend an hour or two playing the game and went back to fragging in Quake 2, or do I trust people who are dedicated soccer gamers?
Yet all these magazines were praising FIFA 2000 like it was the best ever, what the heck were they talking about, they loved it couse it was "FUN!", please what a load of crap. The only honest review I saw was in Computer Games Magazine, and they gave it 4 out of 5 stars for the "FUN" factor, but clearly pointed out that as a sim it was a joke( they did point out most of the shortcoming of this game, unlike the crappy on-line reviews which appeared just before the game came out.)
ZZUB it is kind of weird to hear this guy talking about the next game already, and most of us haven't even seen this version yet!
Ok the following is a letter with replies I recieved from Domonic Cahalin, project manager for Sony's This is football. Its a long letter so bear with me. My main point in putting this letter here is that we obviously have a company who actually give a damn as to what the fans want. I find this extraordinary considering EA's attitude to the same complaints each new release. Enjoy.
Dominic,
Thanks for the reply and also thanks for allowing me the
chance to share a few thoughts on TIF with you. I hope some of what I say
may be of some use. I have been playing soccer games on the playstation
since 1996 and have played and owned virtually every game produced. Lets
just say im addicted. I also played soccer to a decent level.
Firstly, congratulations on producing what to me is so far the best
soccer game made for the playstation. For me one of the most important
things in a game is the gameplay and you have created a challenging,
intuitive and very realistic feeling game. The longer I play TIF the
better it gets. At first it was hard, I had to get all of my other game
habits out of my system (mainly Fifa series) and then as I got better I
was able to move up to world class level which I am still some way from
mastering.
I have noticed and have read that you have made an effort to start from
scratch with this game and rather than follow other games leads you have
concentrated on making your own path. This shows and is a major plus,
however through out this email I will from time to time refer to other
soccer games to hopefully help illustrate a point. When I do this please
be clear that I rate your game number 1. I am also appreciative that on
the website someone involved in the game is actually available to reply
to concerns, questions or thoughts.. If you were to go to a soccergaming
website called www.soccergaming.com and go to the fifa2000 forum you will
discover a great deal of discontent and disappointment with their latest
game. It might be a good idea to take a peek at this because hidden among
the grumbles are pointers to what many soccer gamers pray for.
Dominic: Yeah I've seen it, there's some interesting stuff (thanks)
I have what may at first appear to be a long list of complaints or
suggestions. Your game is already 90% of the way to being the perfect
soccer game in my opinion so please dont view any of the following as
negatives, view them as hopes or suggestions.
I will start with the camera angles. I personally prefer a stadium
camera or isometric camera type angle, preferrable with the ability to
adjust height etc as in Actua soccer3. I have got used to your side view
but even this view is a little behind compared to some other games in
that it is at such an angle that I find myself mostly playing on the side
of the pitch closest to the camera. Im not playing with the whole pitch.
I know I can and that there is nothing stopping me but psychologically I
think I find it harder to play with the players small and adjust my
judgement of where the ball is when they are way over there in the
distance on the far side of the field. Often I misjudge the ball when its
on the other side and find it rolling out of play, this rarely happens on
the closer side. I would love to see TIF with a stadium/isometric view as
in the FIFA series or the Actua series.
Dominic: Don't despair ! it looks likely that we'll add some new cameras
You have limited the customisation of players etc so that we cannot
customise the national teams because you wish for it to remain authentic.
Im one of those geeks that loves to put myself into the Scotland team,
hype up all my attributes so I am the greatest soccer god ever created
and then play for Scotland in world cups, Euro cups and qualifying games.
Could you please allow nerds such as myself this luxury in the next
version. If people want to keep it authentic they can simply not
customise. I know I can create a custom Scotland team and import players
etc but I am unable to take part in world cups with this team. Your
customise section is brilliant though, I love it. Would it be possible to
also link club players to their respective national squads?. This might
allow me to cheat myself in a club team and then the national side
automatically contains my enhanced version.
Dominic: There are actually technical problems with customising international teams
- Have you noticed that their kits are noticably better and more detailed
(i.e they are not compatible with the custom kit feature (as are the club
teams) - instead they are 'hard' art created. So the International teams
are essentially different kinds of teams to the club teams - However I'll
look into the possibilty of changing this...
I dont have any real problems with your control system, everything is
straightforward and pretty easy to use. However on world class level the
Artificial Intelligence that controls the players I am using can
sometimes appear stupid
Dominic: AI will be completely revamped
. I find that if I use automatic player selection
then it doesnt react very well when in and around the penalty spot.
Automatic player selection will definitely be improved
Players closest to the ball dont automatically come under my control etc.
If I use manual control on world class when i get to this area I find I
dont have the dexterity to keep up with the rush of control I need to
pass, shoot and control swerve etc all in one go. This also affects my
ability to defend and most goals I concede all follow a similar style. My
defenders dont react well or I have trouble selecting the right guy to
chase the attacker with.
Dominic: AI will be completely revamped - I know it can get frustrating...
I also suspect that if I was able to play with
an isometric camera angle I could spot what to do easier. It may be Im
simply hopeless, I have spotted others on your website have been able to
win leagues etc on world class. I am still struggling to get Manchester
United to get out of the bottom third on world class. I will win it
eventually im sure.
Dominic:
You'll get there !
Tip 1.
If playing in a domestic league fully Customise your club team's abilities
- this will boost performance by 15% by utilising the extra energy
allowance
Tip 2.
Use chipped through ball to break down defences - CPU intercepts @85 of
hopeful ground through balls
Tip 3 use L1 to track back, and don't neccessarily commit to a tackle if
CPU are attacking down the middle 7 times out of 10 they'll opt to shoot
from long range, with an extremely low success rate (this in all honesty
need st o be revamped as well
Tip4
Concentrate ! at all times
Tip5
when shooting aim for corners by guiding player 'away' from you or
'towards' you (when playing in side mode) and hitting shoot whilst facing
(holding) in these directions. the player will turn automatically and slot
the ball into the net
The computer controlled teams Goalie spends more time throwing the ball
to its players than kicking, even on world class level I win 75% of the
ball the keeper throws. This may need looking at.
Dominic: AI will be completely revamped
The team management side lacks a little depth. It would be nice to be
able to have some control over player positioning within formations and
with attacking or defending bias etc. Being able to in the team
management section choose who are my penalty, free kick or corner takers
would be appreciated.
Dominic: We will be implementing all of your ideas listed here - in addition to some
extras you have not mentioned - this part of This is Football was very
limited, due mainly to time considerations
A training section in the game would also be a welcome addition. The new
UEFA striker game has a superb training section, as did the Libero Grande
game.
Dominic: Probably not for the next sequel, but almost definitely as a longer term
concern
I am still struggling to get the crosses to go towards my strikers
rather than right to the goal line where the goalie is. I have used the
cross button with the R1 and aftertouch etc but I havent been able to
have much luck with this as yet.
Dominic: Loads of people have had problems with this - I apologise
Basically some goalies are so good in World class that they get to far too
many crosses.
Techniques to experiment with
1. definitely use aftertouch and curl the ball away from the gaolie
2 try crossing from a bit deeper, on counter attacks
3. keep experimenting, It is possible to score from crosses even against
rock hard goalies
We will be revamping this part of the game!
I think at this point that is all I can offer. Basically I love your
game, the graphics are great, the stadiums are great the options etc are
great. I have no doubt you guys will tweak all the various aspects of the
game and I suspect you are about to take over from EAsports at the top of
soccer games. (I know the ISS series is the purists number 1, I love that
game also but it doesnt sell as well as the Fifa series) Please dont
speed up the gameplay, if you do at least give us the option to play at
this speed, its perfect. The last game I got excited about was EAsports
World Cup 98 which was apart from a few issues (jerky gameplay, lag on
button press and reaction to instruction) EAsports were heading in the
right direction. Sadly they lost the plot with FIFA 99 simply playing
like high speed ping pong and Fifa 2000 hasnt improved much. I wont be
waiting for the next EAsports game, I will be hanging out for your next
version of TIF
Once again, thanks for listening and pass on my regards to everyone who
produced TIF. For a first up effort its absolutely brilliant and even if
this was a third or fouth generation of TIF it would still be hugely
impressive.
Have a great Xmas and New Year
Mike Stephen

Yeah it is pretty funny when you put it that way. I just hope people play it long enough to see what I mean about it getting better with time when they get a chance to try it.
GOONERBHOY 23-12-1999, 12:41:PM Ok now i`m totally confused!
I don`t trust reviewers because i don`t get anyone who actually likes playing Quake and stuff like PP said and i won`t get anything that doesn`t have real players and teams. Right which do i go for?
I`ve narrowed it down to 2.
THIS IS FOOTBALL OR FIFA 2000?
The only cons stopping be from getting TIS is the season length and with 2k it`s the choppy frame rate and the Ping pong speed.
Gooner, get both
You will be able to find second hand copies of Fifa 2000 at pc game stores in the second hand section and the game TIF is cheaper than other playstation games because its made by Sony.
Or else you could check your hotmail email address and take up the serious offer I made there
PolishPower 24-12-1999, 05:37:AM gooner dont get FIFA 2000 whatever you do! I got it when it first came out and Im totally disgusted by it FIFA 99 is much better my opinion, I still play it, im still playing my Scottish season, Rangers are up by 4 points over Celtic in 29th game of the season, with one old firm game to go. Everytime I try to play FIFA 2000 I get so disgusted that I turn it off by half time! You read all this stuff and you still consider it, think about it youm will enjoy totally bogus play where you kill all teams 8-0 on 4 minute setting?
We were talking real scheduals in 99, well there is no more real scheduals in 2000 this kills the game!
At least try it out first on a loan, you playing the psx or computer version?
GOONERBHOY 24-12-1999, 09:28:AM Thanks for the advise, i`m leaning towards TIS but i still can`t find either in the shops.
Salamo 24-12-1999, 11:25:AM ZZUB,
Thanks for your reply. But the problem with me is I live in Nairobi, Kenya so it really is hard to get any game at all here. To get Fifa 2000 I had to ask a freind who was going to Chile to buy it for me. What I got was the Spanish version with Spanish commentary and I don't even know Spanish.
My point is I can not hire This is Football couse in Kenya you can't hire games from anywhere. To get the game I would have to order it. So is it really worth the bother?
By the way has TIF come out on the PC?
Thanks again and MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Prashanth 24-12-1999, 02:23:PM Is it really that hard to find a game store in Kenya?
Salamo
Cool, hope you have a great Xmas and New Year in Kenya, Ive always wanted to get to Kenya, I will do one day I hope.
Tell me what the most important things are in a playstation soccer game for you and I will try and give you an idea if TIF is for you.
I have been playing games on the Playstation for 4 years now, my favourites were Road to the World cup and World Cup 98 if that helps with what sort of bias I have. TIF definately doesnt suck. Its one of those games that gets better and better each time you play it but at first it comes across as a little disappointing. When I first got Fifa 2000 I thought that on professional level at least its gameplay was better than Fifa 99 but after a short while I was bummed out by the stupid unrealistic scores. Since I have had TIF i simply havent bothered with FIFA 2000 again.
Let me know what things you like in a game and also keep an eye out on what others think in these forums with respect to TIF. It wont appeal to everyone but then again you may find people prefer it to Fifa.

Salamo 25-12-1999, 10:02:AM Hey again!
Prashanth: Yes it is really hard to find a good game store where the prices are under like 100 dollars for each game. And when you do find a good games store they don't even have that many games so you hafto ask them to order it for you.
ZZUB: Thanks and a Very Merry Christmas to you to.
Hmm, what I like in a footy game. Well good graphics and excellent gameplay (harder footy games are the best). I would like to struggle to win in most matches if you see what I mean.
Lots of club teams to choose from.
But the most important thing would be excellent gameplay (better than Fifa2000 and the previous Fifa games). Nice options as well.
The game should last as long as Road to the Worldcup did (I played it for over one year).
Well I better leave now and by the way ZZUB you should come here it really is a nice country with alot to see.
Merry Christmas everybody!!
