View Full Version : Is football more fun to watch now?

I've been pondering this myself for a few days, and it seems like football gets more entertaining to watch with every year. dont get me wrong, football was always fun, but it seems more and more players bring tricks into the game, instead of just simple passes. im quite young tho, so i cant be a smartass about this subject, since i havent watched games from the eighties and so on.
any of the more "old" people want to comment? :)

btw: i dont want to start a new thread for this question, so ill do it here...where can i learn tricks? not just watch videos of them, etc, but some form of tutorials, if that even exists. and not only tricks, everything football skills related.

football these days brings more fun, its faster, more tricks as you say and stadiums are more beautiful....and we all watch colour TV in contrast to the early ages, we have different cam angles, better and smooth replays to enjoy

I don't know, I think I enjoyed it more a few years ago.

Maybe there are more tricks etc. in football, but I prefer hard battles :S

football is not a circus, if you want to watch tricks go to a las vegas magic show :D

i think that football is only really interesting when there some sort of battle ,like this years premiership was amasing as far as how arsenal played but in terms of competition it wasnt particularly interesting. If football gets to the point where even before the much you pretty can assume whoose going to win then how can that be interesting even with all the tricks.

well, considering everybody is in the "Euro 2004 mood" soocer/football, seems more entertaining now because of the anticipation

I agree with this, I think its easier and more entertaining to watch because of the camera angles and such, you feel much closer to the players and some of the things they do seem much more impressive I think.

i disagree. football is at the very end, just a game. and i prefer if there is a good show. besides, maybe hard battles are entertaining when you support a team, but for me, as a neutral, i prefer to watch a good show.

like you said it. its just a game. games are for those who play them. the public isnt playing the game, just watching it.
in the game of football the only good thing is to win, not to do tricks and give a show to the spectators.
2 teams - 1 winner....it isnt 3 teams (including public) - 2 winners (in the case that there was a show of tricks)

theres nothing i hate the most when a player (specially those from real) say that all they want is to make the public happy :|
so why are they playing a sport?? go to clown university and make people happy that way, its easier and leaves the sport for those who like the sport for what it is : a battle to win

You should take into account the relatively new infatuation with teams' kits. I think the internet has helped a whole lot too because people can keep up with any league that they want to, discuss the game with others, etc.

If you think soccer is getting too predictable, I refer you to the Champions League quarterfinals.

for entertaimnt you must see mexican league like 10 diferent champions in the last 10 years, anyone can win it 8 out of the 20 teams have the potential to win.

youre just jealous appiah can do **** for tricks ;).
on a serius note, i dont understand, why you dont want football to be about entertainment. theres alot more casual football fans, than those hardcore people, and those casual people want to see attractive football, not bunker play, and hard fouling, 1 chance per game type of football.
and do you really think there shouldnt be any tricks in football, i mean come on. id understand if you mean players that just do a trick no matter what the situation, and **** up everytime. but when its used to get past players, its that much more enjoyable, than just sprinting faster than the opponent.
why do you think ronaldinho became a lot of people's favourite player? because watching him is entertaining, you can see he enjoys football, and he puts on a show every game.
my point is, 80% of people that watch football, watch it for the entertainment value, not some hard fought battle **** you keep bringing up. this isnt war you know :).

i never said that players should do tricks. i do them myself to get pass players, but what i dont like is that they make a huge deal of a stupid thing. football is not about tricks. and i dont give a rats ass if the new fans only watch football because of the tricks, if thats true then screw them cuz they are just gloryhunters...
tricks are good to in the field, but shouldnt be so important outside of it

its like basketball fans are more excited about the halftime shows that the real freaking game :|

like i said, if you watch football only cuz you like to see a show, then you are watching the wrong thing.
but im not saying that players shouldnt do tricks ;)

I actually prefer natiowide games, there much more of a battle and players don't go down as easy as in the Prem. Like the match i went to on saturday for example, Northampton vs Bury, we (northampton) needed to win to mentain are play-off hopes, we went 1-0 down, then 1-1, then 2-1 down just before half-time. 10 minutes into second half we got a man sent off, but scored 5 mins later, then 5 mins to go our super-sub scored 3-2 (H)

yeh the one thing that really irritates me about top level football is diving and the acting like a total dickhead, like Makele against monaco.
That sort of thing detracts form the entertainment and the pleasure of the football

sports are FOR the public, that is why they are payed lots of money to play in front of millions of fans. i think we are having a misunderstanding. i dont just like watching tricks, i like watching a good show, a beautiful games. i love to watch beautiful passing and graceful players, because sport is about pushing the human body to the limits. soccer excerices the mind and the body. i dont like watching people doing tricks, i think its boring, but watching henry dribble past 4 or 5 players then launch a silly little shot that humliates the goalkeeper, is undeniably fun. or watching viera launch an excellent pass the floats right into the path of pires is a beautfiul thing to see. btw, im not an arsenal fan, but they play some really good football.
