This game is a must win for Man U if they want to get into the 2nd, automatic CL qualification spot. If Chelsea win this then they are assured of that all-mighty spot while Man U will have to start playing official games up to 15 days to a month b4 the start of their season.

I'm expecting a 1-1 draw....

Ruud 1

Lampard 1

well, even if man u wins this, chelsea can still force it to the last day, and get the spot if they win on the last day. ill give it to man u, since chelsea will be on the down after losing out to monaco.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is set to return to the Manchester United line-up for Saturday's encounter with Chelsea at Old Trafford.

The Dutch striker has been plagued by knee and thigh problems in recent weeks but Sir Alex Ferguson has declared the 26-goal striker ready to return to action as the Red Devils look to retain their hopes of a second-placed Barclaycard Premiership finish.

Paul Scholes returns from a three-match ban, while Cristiano Ronaldo and Louis Saha are both available again.

The only definite absentee is skipper Roy Keane who is not expected to have recovered from a hamstring injury until next week.

Team (from): Howard, Carroll, G Neville, Brown, Silvestre, O'Shea, P Neville, Ronaldo, Fletcher, Djemba-Djemba, Butt, Kleberson, Giggs, Van Nistelrooy, Saha, Forlan.

"We've got Paul Scholes back from suspension. Louis Saha, Ruud and Cristiano Ronaldo are all fit. Roy's not 100% so he'll be back next week against Villa with a view to the final. In fact, Roy's the only player who's injured."

We can live without Keane, he's never fit anyway.

We are playing at Old Trafford and Chelsea are playing far superior football than us. Our crapping has been crap and the offside goal by Gudjohnsen was just a let-off. Even though Chelsea dominated, we had enough chances to equalise.

Honestly, Cudicini is one of the two people at Chelsea who doesn't deserve to be replaced.
He's been awesome, this season and last. Consistent as any top keeper, in fact, more consistent than most of them.

Congrats to Chelsea on second place. We had some opportunities to win the match. I'm very pleased for van Nistelrooy for ending his goalless streak. Who knows, if van Nistelrooy wasn't playing, maybe we would have lost. We ain't gonna get a break like Bobby said. Euro 2004, USA Tour, Cup Of Champions, Pre-Season friendlies and CL Qualifiers.

the corner decision which led to chelsea's goal was pathetic.well, this has happened all season to united.but nothing to take away from jesper's super strike.at that time our defence was to blame.no one tried to get near him.he had all the space in the world.
scholes must have feel humiliated to be subbed.let's hope he does not get angry.fergie did the right thing to sub him.

and kleberson?i thought he was the c.ronaldo type player with fancy work and flicks, etc.but i have hardly seen him do all that.maybe he is the nicky butt type player,is he?

we'll have to be happy with 3rd place i guess.it would never be a problem for united ,but with the euro 2004 coming,i think many of our players will get tired.so the 2 extra cl matches may prove vital

Fair result in the end , but im worried for next season some of our players will be in Euro 2004 , then the tournament in America , then Champions league qualifying , that leaves lvery little time to recover for next season.

Help?
09-05-2004, 08:09:AM
Well the game ended exactly like i predicted - 1-1 :( .

Sad to see Ruud miss that penalty. In the first two seasons he would have shot that a lot more accurate and a lot stronger. Remember that 2-2 penalty against Leverkusen in CL semis. It's like you can know where the ball is going, but saving it? No chance! Well he has been off-form and all those injuries, that's why he didn't score that. He will be back next season bigger and better.

I was surprised that Saha didn't start. He is our most on-form player atm, and he did really well after he came on. He is still young and will be greater next season. No need for any other players. Saha and Ruud is all we need.

I however don't agree with Fergie that Scholes was lucky not to get a straight red card. Yes he dived, and i was surprised of that a lot, to me it looked that he just stepped on his foot wrong and fell, but after he asked for penalty it was obvious that he dived. He shouldn't do it again, i bet even this one dive, will make everybody call him a diver for like 2-3 years. He shouldn't have done that and he and United faced the consequences, he had to be subbed off, not to get sent off so that he would be available for the FA CUp final. When he came off United missed his shots outside of the box. ROnaldo and Giggs both had good shooting chances but crossed to Ruud who was covered. Scholes has a wicked shot and we missed him a lot. Well atleast he will be available for the FA Cup.

Watch it again then. And Huth should have been sent off already when United got a penalty, by that time he made 5 tackles and not one touched the ball. He should thank Bennet for letting him play extra 30 min.

So you think Ruud would rather have fallen for nothing (he obviously didn't see how far Huth was away from him), then have a one-on-one with Cuducini?

The point is Huth was lucky to stay on after the penalty he should have been off. He clearly didn't touch the ball and fouled the guy and that was after 3 warnings and 1 yellow.

Dive? why would Ruud waste a perfectly good 1 on 1 opportunity with Cudicini just to get that twat sent off? van Nistelrooy didn't even see that Huth had stuck his leg out.

Huth should've got a straight red instead of a second yellow, he was the last man, but at least the **** can't appeal with two yellows anyway. (H)

agreed.

This is coming from a van Nistelrooy & Man. United hater. I do not understand how you can call it a dive and why he would even think about diving in that situation. Face it, Huth is a bad defender at this point in his career. He is young and has an awful lot to learn. This was his worst match I have seen all season.

Same can be said for Scholes who made a yellow card tackle soon after getting his first card but was let off. Drop the BS.

Huth caught RVN's ankle. Fair sending off.

Huth is a good defender for his AGE. He will get better. Some games he is great and some games not so great, like 99% of young players. Look at Ronaldo, his game was crap for hte most part. All flash and nothing usefull came from his step overs. :p

wtf was that from Scholes?! As for us not being able to accuse others of diving, I think we're in a fairly unique position. I think because of the United fans (on these boards) admitting when their players dive we have the right to accuse others of diving. It's when you can't admit to diving in your team that you shouldn't be accusing others.

Scholes' dive was up there with Neville's though. Stupid thing to do, and a booking was fully deserved. He should really have been sent off for the challenge he gave Lampard a while later but was fortunate there. It was evened out by Bennett later on.

As for Huth's red card. It was fully deserved. Myself, I'd have preferred him to have let Ruud go and a chance at goal, but he clipped his heels and down went Van Nistelrooy. Should've been a straight red in fairness, last man back and all that (see Cunninham on Gerrard in the Liverpool game), but a 2nd yellow and the same result, no-one's complaining.

We were ****e though, and I was quite angry at just how ****e some of our players were playing until we scored. But finally, after many a game going through the motions asleep, we woke up. After Ruud's goal it was 1 way traffic, but the need for more creativity through the middle was highlighted. Giggs was poor again so our only threat came from Ronaldo, and while I think he's capable of providing more than most, it's a big responsibility for a player so young in a team like United.

Phil Neville and Fletcher really need to work on their passing. I like hard working players in the team, they're a must, but they have to be able to pass the ball forward. Fletcher looks promising but against Chelsea he left a lot to be desired - passing backwards all the time - and they were poor passes. Phil Neville was pretty much the same, but he's more experienced. Why not give Djemba-Djemba the game, instead? I'd also like to see more of Kleberson, I feel he's been judged too quickly by many United fans because he's hardly played for one reason or another.

Chelsea's goal was good. The shot was well struck but the marking was appalling. It shouldn't have been a corner in the first place, but never-the-less mistakes are made and defending has to be done... and it wasn't done. The only player that tried to close down Gronkjaer was Scholes, O'Shea stood there. He had plenty of time to close him down and at least make the shot more difficult but he didn't.

At 1-1 the result is probably a fair reflection overall. But we were so bad at times in the first 70mins-75mins that I wouldn't have said we deserved to win and neither would I have said that Chelsea didn't deserve a win.
