Thank God it is only a rumor. But we all know why EA has such a strong hold on the footie scene with its exclusive licenses. It's too bad international football associations can't be more open to its licensing policy. But what are you going to do when someone shove a boat of cash for an exclusive license. If KONAMI or other companies are allow to have the same licenses as EA does, imagine how we the fans will get more innovative and authentic footies games as possible. Players, Inc. denies billion-dollar EA exclusivity deal

[UPDATE] After a well-respected sports-industry magazine reports the sports-licensing deal of the century is in the works, NFLPA reps say the story has been retracted.
Two weeks ago, The Sports Business Journal, one of the most respected trade journals of the athletic entertainment business, revealed the identity of Madden NFL 2005 cover athlete Ray Lewis several days before EA Sports announced it.

Now it appears they may have broken one of the biggest rumors in the game industry's history.

The May 3 issue of the Journal contained a story with the headline "EA set to pay Players Inc. $1 billion." According to the article, Electronic Arts is in final negotiations with Players Inc., the NFL Players' Association marketing arm, to exclusively license all NFL player rights for the next four years. The Journal set the price tag of the deal at $250 million each year, which EA would pay Players Inc.; in other words, a literal billion-dollar contract.

Given the large sums reportedly at stake, the exclusivity of the EA/NLFPA deal would have been almost certainly strict. If such a deal were ever done, no non-EA Sports game could license NFL player likenesses--an almost certainly fatal blow to the Madden series' rivals, such as ESPN NFL Football.

When provided with excerpts from the article by GameSpot, EA Sports representatives promised to pass them along to "someone who can answer your questions." However, off the record, one source close to the company called the story "way off."

While the The Sports Business Journal broke the story, it was, ironically, reprinted in the magazine ESPN. This prompted a moderator at ESPNvideogames.com to call the NFLPA. According to the moderator, NFLPA reps denied that anything other than "normal" licensing deals were in play.

When contacted by GameSpot, NFLPA executives said that not only was the story false, but that The Sports Business Journal has since run a retraction. EA representatives also later contacted GameSpot to confirm the retraction, a fact that will undoubtedly make fans of the ESPN NFL franchise breathe much easier.

Oh really? Then explained why can't KONAMI or other gaming companies can't get the official licenses to the top leagues around the world, WC, and Euro Championship. It's because EA made exclusive deals with these leagues.

The FIFA license is pretty much useless because it is only the name FIFA. EA has to make licensing deals with each seperate leagues or individual clubs and official tournaments to make FIFA. So all the official leagues and teams that are in FIFA are licensed. If they want the Nike tick or addidas logos, they have to make deals for that too. Same deal with official boots. I believe that FIFA is the most licensed game out there aside from the GTA series.

my 2 cents on this topic is that EA should give up the rights and liscensces to the teams unless they are going to make a propper soccer game for us to play. whats the use in having the official names and kits if you are not able to play a decent game

Unlike EA's footy game, Madden is already the undisputed leader of American football titles in terms of quality and market share -- there would be no reason to shell out this type of money for exclusive licenses.

They'd have to sell some 10 million units of Madden per year just to break even on this investment.

I know pretty well PES bitmaps, i've made kits for PES and i can say that PES bitmaps sucks a lot, 256 colours and little size, the render ingame are better than FIFA that's why it look better, as soon as EA change the render engine EA kits will be much better, even without 2GK cause EA bitmaps are 24 bits, KONAMI ones 8 like i said 256 colours. You can't make a great game and look like the reality with only 256 colours...

I don`t know how PES looks like on the PC, but at PS2 they look not better but got almost the same graphic quality with FIFA 2004 for the PS2. But anyway looks doesn`t matter to most of the people here, they prefer gameplay, they don`t really mind if it`s 256 colours 8 bit BMP, or a 32 bit BMP, they can`t really tell the differences when playin` usin` tower cam.

Face it, you are a graphics whore. You like FIFA because of the graphics which in my opinion is not all that great. FIFA is better in some graphics department while KONAMI is better in others. It is pointless argument with someone who has no clue of what he talking about or will never will. First you stated that PES/PES graphics are not good because they are in 8 bit. I then said that FIFA used to have 8 bit also until Ariel converted the format to 24 bit and higher resolution (i.e 2GK format). Then EA changed FIFa to 24 bit. KONAMI used 8 bit for transparency purposes and because up until now, PES/WE games were on only on consoles. Consoles with their limited resources can't handle 24 bit graphics that well. You said I look like a donkey because your dimwit self can't comprehend that.

Which is a real pity since as ya'd said it, EA really have got it all primed for 'em to make a smashing football game, only to fail miserably in the execution. If Euro 2004 is any indication as to how 05 is shaping up, I really dont think theres anything much to crow about, or even expect.

It's all good editing fifa, heck, ya probably recognize a whole congregation of us here in PES/WE who used to play fifa and were actively involved in the fifa scene. Some of us only saw what we were missing when WE/PES came to PC and we haven't looked back and it is highly inprobable that we will unless fifa matches WE/PES in gameplay and by then, we probably wouldnt even bother what with the strides that Konami would have made in improving their product.

And please, dont come here telling us fifa's graphics are in anyway superior to PES/WE. It's like saying ::Jason:: of gfx forum is comparable to Monet.

Some people loves graphics and some people loves gameplay. I don`t see anything wrong with Mouta`s statements, at least he could give a proper explanation about the bitmaps quality differences between PES and FIFA, unlike some real hardcore EA fanboys who can only bitch "PES SUXXX, FIFA RULZZ !!!!" without makin any decent sense of explanation and make a fool out of themself. Yes, I agree FIFA bitmaps are better but bitmaps doesn`t make me enjoy my football game if I weren`t allowed to do a well timed volley or bicycle kick in FIFA 2004 due to ( again ) some programming bugs.

So you think having one company having all the exclusive rights to all of the licenses will make us footie fans happy because they will make the best game. Competition is what make games better. EA has the money, the licenses, and all of the resources to make the best footie game. But they don't because of the fans. FIFA fans do not demand much from EA. It does not matter how bad the game is, they flock in hordes to buy the latest installment of the series. It is no wonder FIFA is so behind in the gameplay department when comparing to WE/PES all of these years. Then when EA comes up with something that is already in other games, they put their marketing spin on it by using fancy terms. Aerial play, organic motion, player's DNA, ect... All lot of BS. Euro2004 has the chip shot. Big freaking deal. It has been in WE for many years.
I don't support one company. I want a good game. KONAMI has delivered that to me at the moment. Does that mean that they can't be improved? No, there are a lot of things KONAMI can do to make WE/PES better.
Like I said before, you are a graphic whore. Let's say that you are right that FIFA has better graphics. Does that make FIFA better than WE overall a game because of the graphics? You would chose FIFA over WE because of the graphics.

Anybody remember when the first FIFA came out for the PC? You know, the one that didn't even have a year in the title. I think it was called "FIFA Soccer" or something. The view was 3/4s isometric, and gameplay was far from realistic but it was fun as hell.

Fast forward to 2004. Why does it seem like EA has continued to improve the graphics engine but has done nothing to the gameplay? If anything the gameplay has gotten worse over the years. I bought the first 3 (I think) FIFA games for PC and after that I quit because the lousy gameplay really turned me off. Then I played WE6 and saw what a real footie simulation looks and plays like. It really rejuvenated my love for footie games, and now with WE7i it's even better.

"Graphics whore" is harsh, but appropriate. I don't really have a lot of respect for the opinions of those who think graphics are more important than gameplay. It's debatable, but let's just say for the sake of argument that FIFA has better graphics. The gameplay on the other hand comes nowhere near WE/PES. So how is it possible that you think FIFA is a better game unless you're a graphics whore? That only happens if you don't really love football. Real footie lovers would never choose flashy graphics with unrealistic gameplay.

I can understand why Mouta keep saying FIFA got the better graphic, its because the poor gameplay in FIFA, therefore, the only fun with FIFA is all about editing and watching the match opening screen. LOL

Cause i'm not more than that, so if the game will be awesome or not it's EA responsability, i'm just a fan and a reseracher, not more than that. About the graphics i've already said it rocks, the render engine it's changed, much more detail and the gameplay is being rewritten, i have high expectations. About FIFA 2005 i know things, about upcoming WE/PES nothing...

my only problem with fifa 04 graphics are the generic faces. There are a lot of the same ones. Some of the generic faces look like crap.... other than that i think fifa has an edge on graphics. The gameplay is getting better in fifa and hopefully it will be great in fifa 05

I know many languages and made some programs already, for FIFA i just work on Visual Basic, for the university, C, Haskell, Java, HTML, PHP, SQL... i don't have to show proofs or to say here what i know or not, my life will be computers so one day i'll have a work in this, it can be in any thing related to computers... games for example. I've made bycicle kicks in EURO 2004, zidane moves, chip shot and trough passes, maybe it's just you... corners, free kicks and penalties will be affected also by the amazing broadcast feature, on the pitch will be 25 persons, 22 players, 11 per team, a referee and 2 linesman, in PES you just have 22... :crazyboy:

A referee is a part of the game, so a part of the gameplay, having the referee on the field means that he can touch ball, you can shot and the ball touchs him for example, it's ridiculous that PES 3 don't have the referee on the field... WE8 will have and also the dirty kits but these are features that even FIFA 2004 had so like i always say PES is not the perfect game, FIFA have a lot of things that PES need and vice-versa.

Have you know, I was a FIFA fan up until FIFA 2003, at which point I found the gameplay to be well below standard, and it seemed to me that EA was ripping off the consumer by concentrating on making £££'s, rather than deliver a decent football sim that they are more than capable of doing.

I've also been a fan of PES and the ISS series preceding it, before they became seperate series, so I'm not a PES bandwagon jumper nor fanboy. I made the point about aesthetics in a football game earlier in this thread about the referees and linesmen, and his response sounded very much like your typical EA producer type. It doesn't matter what the on-field goings on are, it's the gameplay that matters.

For your information, I have played every FIFA games since 96. It's just that I can differeniate what is crap and what is not. So have alot of people on this forum. Don't give me this BS about how PES people only care about PES. We have played both FIFA and PES. We all know that PES is not perfect but it does not market itself as something it is not. I have played Euro2000. And I can honestly say that it is not even as good as ISSPro 2 in term of gameplay. I bet the new NAMCO Football King will have better gameplay than FIFA2005. Wouldn't that be something that a company can make a game on the first try and it is better than FIFA2005 in the gameplay department. But you wouldn't care because you already deem Football King to be garbage because of the graphics.

I have played both games and there are faults with each one. I dont like PES as much as fifa.
About chip shots and all that stuff, in fifas way back there have been chip shots and things like that, it was just almost impossible to do in fifa 2004. Fifa had it before Konami even came out with a game.
That really doesn't even matter though.

Chip shots dont belong to EA or Konami. They belong to the sport. Each company should be able to put it in there game (just like they put in a football) without it being called copying. EA didn't complain when Konami used a chipshot in their game.

Both the games are good, it just depends on your opinion. Dont get too carried away.
