View Full Version : Kit Textures ????
dioxide 28-05-2004, 04:41:AM A common problem for all kit makers I am sure, trying to create the ideal kit texture, but something I am having real problems with.
I have tried umpteen ways to try and create a texture effect I like, but I have not been able to create anythin I liked. Im not looking for a texture to be posted, or for someone to just hand a texture to me,
I would like some sort of guide or tutorial to help me create the effects. I know it is to do with layers, and inverting shadows, hue, and screening or transparency I think ?????
I feel that if all the kit makers pull together and help each other the better its gonna be, i understand that there are some secrets and textures etc that people will want to keep to themselves, for originality purposes, but surely we can all help each other.
The more kit makers we have creating kits the better the game and community is going to be, so PLEASE PLEASE will someone please give some sort of guide to help us newbies to kit making, to create the shiny glossy effect on some of the kits I have seen???
any help is greatly appreciated.
PS so u all understand what I mean with regards to texture quality, heres an example of one of the textures pede used recently

dioxide 29-05-2004, 04:10:PM hmmm no surprises then, no helpers at all...
cant say im surprised, ah well never mind ill carry on myself,
44 views and not one reply to even say get lost do it yourself...
::L0$ER:: 29-05-2004, 04:36:PM you can try adjusting the brightness or contrast of the texture...:o
maleato 29-05-2004, 08:16:PM And a small shiny look tutorial for Photoshop .
Duplicate your template layer, and set the layer mode of that copy to screen. Now go to Image>adjustments>brightness/contrast, and take the brightness bar to the left. Repeat this as mcuh as you want till you have a nice shiny effect on the kit .
You'll notice some templates are better suited for this use than others. Just try a bit different things, and your kits will look much more realistic. It's a simple trick, but in my opinion it makes a big difference.
creature901 30-05-2004, 01:18:AM ive tried that and it doesnt work, it just stays the same as it would normally
dioxide 30-05-2004, 01:52:AM thx for the tips guys, its nice to see there are at least some helpul people on these forums.
i dont undertsand why we cannot all help each other to improve our kit making abilities. its not as if we are being paid for our time, its all voluntary, so I see no need for this lack of help or guidance on how to create textures.
i have received some help from the top kitmakers which I am extremely grateful, but the lack of replies to views on this forum leads me to the conclusion, of
A) noone knows how to help
B) the people who do know cant b arsed giving away the secrets.
its not like we are al aiming to be elitist. sure;ly the more people who understand and are competent in kit making the better it is for the game.
I can understand peoples attempts to try and keep their work original, but I am not asking for them to give me the texture, I am asking for guidance on what effects u can use to create the texture.
It disappoints me, at the lack of replies, and the lack of help from 'the top kit makers on the forum'
we have a good supply of great kit makers here, and I would have thought a forum like this would like to try and help its members achieve the same quality of kit making as the top makers.
but it strikes me that its some sort of competition, I see no need for competitvness, when the more kit makers we have, will improve the quality oif the game that EA releases.
No doubt ill either receive the obligatory flame or derogatory remark for my comments, but as the lack of replies or help shows , this forum is a place for those of us whose face fits into the group.
pede54 30-05-2004, 06:15:AM Dioxide..........you are new here man and when you have been around a bit longer you will see that we DO all help each other out........there is no elitism ...there are no secrets..........I know exactly what you want and there is only one guy i know who can answer your problem......and didnt i tell you i will contact him and let you know the result?Your problem is mate that you are impatient and want it all yesterday.............and what you write in your posts is not helping your case at all man.......so chill out ......stop being silly and be patient........the answer will come when i can contact the guy who knows.......OK?
dioxide 30-05-2004, 11:57:AM whether I am new or not, is not an issue, and i know that u offered to help me with the problem at hand so any comments in the previous post were not aimed at either yourself or any other people who have offered their help in this problem, I am extremely grateful in any attempts u have made to help.
U have to admit m8, that u can post not only queries but a kit post, of your work looking for replies so as to improve ur work, but unless ur name is x or whatever, then u receive no replies. I posted work here, in the hope that I would receive comments or criticism on how to improve the work, but i only received comments from the people like urself and a few others who take the time to browse the forum properly, and understand how important constructive criticism can be
It should not matter whether I am new here or not, and its not that i am impatient, i am quite happy to wait on an answer to the problem even if it does take a week or so... that is not the main issue, the main issue arises that u can post here, and receive no replies just because ur name is not well enough known,
an unfortunate fact of life, understandbly, people only answer the popular threads, but I thought that posting here I may find someone who may know other tips or tricks in PS. I did not want to rely upon urself only, and as I say, u never know what people find out for themselves in PS.
To a point people on this forum are helpful, when it suits, but I am only trying to increase the amount of competent kit makers available, and am not looking to create an environment where people feel that I am being derogatory towards them or others.... ( I am only criticising on account of my personal account of what has happened to me on this forum, it may be different for other people,) and I aploigize if comments have been construed in another manner, I can oinly comment on my personal experience. and that how I have found the forums to be.
I have found urself, curs and a few others to be nothing more than helpful. and understanding when I have asked advice or help, but I refuse to renage on a comment that relates to the other 75% of the forum or so, who only offer help, or comments in popular threads.
we all have to start somewhere on the ladder m8, we cant all b super kit makers overnight, and we can only improve thru comments and help from other forum users, but that does not happen on a regular basis on this forum and is not due to my lack of impatience, or any other, character flaw u may think I have.
I stopped posting work on here, on account of the lack of advice or comments to the work, why waste time postin somethin if u cant receive positive or negative feedback for that matter back.
and as I said before, 44 views and no replies says it all, it takes me to post something contraversial before I get a reply, thats not a criticism, but an observation.
and I would note that whatever I say is a generalization of members of this forum, and is not aimed at any particualr member, i am grateful to any1 who offers help and advice to any1 on this forum, what I dont accept is people taking time out to post work that they have worked hard on, and receiving no replies cause there name is not well enough known. that applies to not only posts on work, but on any posts relating to textures, kits etc.......
Im sorry u think that Im some sort of impatient brat who cant pass the time of day with out harrasssing people for an answer. but as I say, I assumed ( possibly stupidly ) that other people may have tips and tricks on how to achive different effects on kit textures( and this was what my original question was aimed at)
my apoligies if my bad temper at my work has progressed thru to the forum, but unfortunately it happens in life......
i totally agree with you mate
its so annoying when you make a kit and get no comments..
that always happens to me..i make a kit and receive 1 or 2 comments but most of the times nobody stop to just tell that the kit was good or if it needs work
even if i make a great kit people don't stop to tell me if its good or not only because i'm not pede, curs, or ocar for example
and i know they're a lot better than me but the only way that i can get better is receiving constructive comments
cheers
pede54 30-05-2004, 09:32:PM Fair points guys.......but dioxide you gotta also realise that out of those 44 views of the thread .....many of the viewers were just guys looking for kits who know nothing about kitmaking.........the majority of ppl here just pop in and pop out mate ,thats the way it is........as to why some threads get plenty of comments and others dont........i couldn't tell you man......you gotta ask the posters that one........all i can say is that in all the time time i have been around i have tried to keep my threads "HAPPY THREADS".......nobody gets a hard time in my threads (unless they get out of order or silly)...but its rare.......and i guess its only over time that you make friends here......so maybe there are only a few of us here that help each other along....thats cool and we will help all we can........i struggled like you at the beginning man so we all know what thats like.......then someone helped me a lot and still does i might add.......so i will always be happy to help with the little knowledge i have.........and i'm not accusing you of having Personality defects man.......you just gotta be cool 'cos attitude will get you nowhere, just get you the reaction that you dont want......like being ignored............If i have something to say to a kitmaker that will help him to improve something ......of cours i will do it........but contrary to popular belief i dont know a lot about Graphics or Graphics programs........i make kits and that is where my knowledge begins and ends,so i dont know a lot of the tricks of the trade.........but dont worry mate we all look after each other here.......no snobbery....no elitism.......for Christs sake man it's only kitmaking ,its not like its anything important .......:D
maleato 30-05-2004, 10:23:PM Dioxide, I've tried to help you posting a tip above, but it looks like you ignored it...
dioxide 30-05-2004, 11:06:PM I didnt maleato, i did post my thx for the help u posted. and I am grateful for those who do take time to post any answer which helps create different texture effects :)
