Denmark 0 -1 Italy
Goals
Del Piero 45'
Cards
None
Pretty boring match, slow paced, probably how it's gonna be in real life...your thoughts?
This will be a close match I think. Though in the end Italy will pull through with a Totti goal.
Italy 2 : 1 Denmark
Vieri, Totti - Tomasson
northstar 13-06-2004, 10:35:AM Denmark is always a dangerous team and Tomasson is a great international level player. Italy must pressure The Denmark defense as it is not that strong. Midfield battle is important as the Zanetti-Perrota have a lot to proove now that the matches are so important and the opposition is tough. Pirlo and Gattuso want their starting jobs.
Gronkjaer is not playing in the Euros if you did not know as a family memeber is very ill.
::shinji:: 13-06-2004, 10:42:AM probably 2-0 to Italy or something like that. realistically it'll have to be a very solid or lucky performance from the Danes to get points from this one.
buuuuuttt, u never know..
manutd4eva 13-06-2004, 10:51:AM 2-0 Italy.
abhi_juve 13-06-2004, 12:02:PM Italy 2 : 1 Denmark
Italy - Del Piero 31, 78
Bonzi 13-06-2004, 12:24:PM Italy - Denmark 1:0
Vieri
henry#14 13-06-2004, 12:29:PM We have a short day of school on Tuesday, so I can rush home and watch a good 3/4 of the match(H)
Italy I feel have too much class and as long as they start well then they should beat Denmark. my condolances(sp?) to Gronkjaer after the death of his mother:( :(
Mikey 13-06-2004, 12:30:PM Hopefully all your predictions are right:D

MadAZNFootballe 13-06-2004, 01:29:PM Why isn't Francisco Coco in the Italian Squad
italianstyle87 13-06-2004, 01:47:PM italy easily against the danes
italy 3-0 denmark
Vieri, Vieri, Totti
Parra Power 13-06-2004, 01:48:PM bah.... 2am kickoff here... i'll have to wait until 7:30pm to see it :\
i think it will be a pretty close game.... 1/2 goals difference max..... pretty boring i'd say.... so definately not watchable at 2am :|
Alistair 13-06-2004, 02:20:PM I reckon if the Danes play their best, they have a very good chance at winning this match. The defense will need to be extremely solid. It's gonna be a low scoring match, I predict 1-0 Denmark through Tomasson..
Larry 13-06-2004, 02:23:PM 3-0

using that logic England will severely trash France since Denmark beat them at World Cup and then lost to England...
Denmark will loose to Italy though since Gravesen is out ... Grønkjær can be replaced, but the loss of Gravesen is extremely serious for the danish side ... plus the fact that the danish defense is too slow ...
1-2 loss

I am predicting a draw.
Solely because of Trap playing a **** team.
Zanetti and Perotta are **** compared to Pirlo and Gattuso.
This 4-2-3-1 ****s me as well.
Starting lineup
Buffon
Panucci
Nesta
Cannavaro
Zambrotta
Zanetti
Perrotta
Camoranesi
Totti
Del Piero
Vieri
Camoranesi, absolute poo. It should be Fiore.
santino 14-06-2004, 08:33:AM 1st of all, no camo is not ****.....perrotta and zanetti are what helped qualify us, he left out pippo, he shouldn't ruin te team more by leaving out them 2....gatusso and pirlo have been great for milan, but have yet to prov a lot on the NT, with the exception of pirlo, because he lacks NT experience, which is another reason not to play him......zanetti and perrotta stay on their feet and don't tumble around like gattuso....italy needs 2 holding mids.....gattuso is 1, pirlo lacks some defensive skills, he has some, but not enough.....and gattuso is not good enough to cover 2 positions.......
lastly, quit your bitching......don't change the system days before the tournament.....totti, camo, and delpi provide support for vieri, we need 2 guys to help out the defensive side:kader:
Gattuso isnt playing? Damn he's the only Italian player on my fantasy team. Hopefully it'll be a good game.
dannyeli 14-06-2004, 08:47:AM Italy will win 2-0 :( Totti and Vieri :(

italianstyle87 14-06-2004, 10:35:AM if italy doesnt win by 2 goals im gonna be dissapointed
Gerrard 17 14-06-2004, 10:49:AM You're setting yourself up for a disappointment then.
The only way I see Italy winning by 2 goals is 2-0... but I don't think it will be quite that easy.

Get outta here. If youre not Italian why you support Milan? the least you could do is support italy in Euro's. I dont care really, but still.
IceBlu 14-06-2004, 10:58:AM well you don't have to be Italian to support an Italian club but yeah ... when you support a team like Milan its messed up if you hope for Italy to lose especially if neither of your nationalities are represented in the competition - In Rony's case, Iraq and Canada.
anyway, i don't care how well Italy play ...I don't care what the score is. All im hoping is for Italy to start well and get a win under their belts.

IceBlu 14-06-2004, 11:05:AM Korea were supposedly outclassed as well. Croatia were supposedly outclassed as well.
So i've stopped expecting demolitions from the Azzurri. Its not their style.
If they are going to win this competition or even reach the semis, they will be scraping through with the narrowest of wins.
Hopefully Italy don't stop playing after they take leads.
And hopefully Trap's first substitution doesn't involve Del Piero

lplover2k2 14-06-2004, 11:20:AM Denmark is a very good team ;it will be difficult for Italy to beat then i predict 1-0 Totti
TottiNZidaneR#1 14-06-2004, 11:20:AM I see a upset coming up 2-1 to Denmark
2x for JDT, 1 for Totti.
rony31 14-06-2004, 11:39:AM Yash and Mikey: before I entered high school, I DID support Italy... but then I met all the dumb, stuck-up, conceited Italians in my school who thought they were Gods gift to mankind and became anti-Italy
now I'm not saying all Italians are conceited and stuck-up, just 99% of the ones in my school :p
but I've gone past hating Italy, now I just dont like them
either way, I'm just hoping for entertaining football since I'll probably never see any of my native countries in the World Cup :S
dannyeli 14-06-2004, 11:43:AM First Published: Jun 12, 2004
Denmark's use of two wingers could cause Italy untold damage in their Group C Euro 2004 match on Monday claimed AC Milan's Danish striker Jon Dahl Tomasson.
The 27-year-old told euro2004.com that the Italian defenders were not used to playing against two wingers and he was looking forward to seeing how the likely fullbacks of Christian Panucci and Gianluca Zambrotta acclimatised to that.
While it is unlikely that Chelsea's Jesper Gronkjaer will make it as he is still in Denmark after his mother died of cancer on Friday, the Danes have two other lively widemen in Dennis Rommedahl and Marin Jorgensen.
"The Italians are not used to playing against teams with two wingers like we do and I'm sure we will cause them trouble," said Tomasson, who scored four goals at the 2002 World Cup finals.
"I'm looking forward to seeing how they'll solve that problem," added Tomasson, who failed to blossom at Premiership side Newcastle because he was deployed on the wing and left after a year to enjoy a more fruitful spell as a striker at Feyenoord.
While Tomasson is thrilled at the prospect of Italy having problems down the flanks he doesn't see himself getting too many opportunities to score as his two years in Serie A have taught him.
"I don't expect to get much room as I don't think the Italians will push forward to put us under pressure as an attacking game is not their style," said Tomasson, who also played in Euro 2000 when Denmark went home after the first round.
Tomasson said he and three of his team-mates, who are also based in Italy, didn't feel any greater incentive to put one over their opponents.
"I'm really looking forward to the game," said Tomasson, whose last minute winner against Ajax in the 2003 Champions League quarter-finals kept alive their dreams of the trophy which culminated in beating Juventus in the final.
"But the fact that I'll be up against some of my colleagues from Italy does not make the game more special for me - none of us can wait to get started.
"Italy will be tough opponents and I regard them as a side hungry for victory who can go all the way."
Little-Caesar 14-06-2004, 02:44:PM Forza L'Azzuri

Vinnie Jones 14-06-2004, 08:46:PM The italian team has virtually no weak points. Denmark must play one hell of a match and have some luck to pull off an upset, which i really doubt it. It´s just about how long can Denmark hold until conceding a goal. If they prevent an early goal then anything can happen but Italy is a very hard side to beat.
bertrandcantat 14-06-2004, 09:18:PM what's the composition of Danemark ? and Italy ? thanks
mark77 14-06-2004, 09:26:PM most probably this:
Danimarca (4-4-1-1):
1 Sorensen, 6 Helveg, 4 Laursen, 3 Henriksen, 5 N. Jensen, 19 Rommedahl, 15 D. Jensen, 17 Poulsen, 10 Jorgensen, 9 Tomasson, 11 Sand.
(22 Andersen, 16 P. Jensen, 2 Boegelund, 13 Kroeldrup, 18 Priske, 14 C. Jensen, 12 Kahlenberg, 23 Loevenkrands, 21 Madsen, 20 Perez).
All. Morten Olsen.
Italia (4-2-3-1):
1 Buffon, 2 Panucci, 5 Cannavaro, 13 Nesta, 19 Zambrotta, 20 Perrotta, 4 Zanetti, 16 Camoranesi, 7 Del Piero, 10 Totti, 9 Vieri.
(12 Toldo, 22 Peruzzi, 15 Oddo, 6 Ferrari, 23 Materazzi, 15 Favalli, 8 Gattuso, 21 Pirlo, 14 Fiore, 18 Cassano, 17 Di Vaio, 11 Corradi).
All. Trapattoni.

birthek 14-06-2004, 09:30:PM Danish press has speculated in a couple of surprises since the pressmeeting with coach Morten Olsen last night.
His statements were a bit cryptic.
Usual danish lineup 4-2-3-1
Sørensen
Helveg
Laursen
Henriksen
N. Jensen
Gravesen
Poulsen
Jørgensen
Grønkjær
Sand
Tomasson
Gravesen and Grønkjær are out.
Press speculation is that
Gravesen will be replaced with either D. Jensen or that Helveg will be put on the def.midfield with K. Bøgelund or Priske taking his place as Right Back.
Grønkjær will probably be replaced with Rommedahl.
Furthermore there has been speculation that Henriksen will be replaced with Krøldrup, since Henriksen lacks speed and match training ... but this would be some surprise since Henriksen is captain...
Italy are probably 4-3-2-1
Buffon
Zambrotta
Nesta
Cannavaro
Panucci
Zanetti
Camoranesi
Perotta
Del Piero
Totti
Vieri
mark77 14-06-2004, 09:33:PM I'd like to see Kroldrup play. He's linked with us. ;)

TottiNZidaneR#1 14-06-2004, 11:55:PM Half-Time, so far Denmark have been the better team theres no doubt about that. They have been really impressive even the kepper was good on those 2 saves that he made. Buffon has been good so its gonna be hard to score on him.
Bummy_JaB 14-06-2004, 11:58:PM Pretty good game. Italy, as usual playing well defensively. BUT they are gettin ass raped in possesion. I think its a good time to bring in Pirlo.
manutd4eva 14-06-2004, 11:58:PM Two good saves from Sorenson.:D

italianstyle87 14-06-2004, 11:58:PM the italian MF is just not there

snoppf1 14-06-2004, 11:59:PM i know someone whoz italian, i wonder if he will be happy with them
As for Denmark they r payin well but i can see them being hit by a shock goal like england yesterday
Punkt 15-06-2004, 12:01:AM Unfair result for Denmark and the italians almost score what would be a terrible injustice. great Sorensen (Y)
mark77 15-06-2004, 12:01:AM I think Pirlo should come in for Zanetti.
Cannavaro is having a great game.;)
VanTheMan 15-06-2004, 12:01:AM i like the denmark style of play.they seem always to create space for a shot.they should have had atleast a goal
Virgo 15-06-2004, 12:01:AM the game will be over as soon as Italy scores a goal so they have to be cautious.
Just because Italy are playing sh*t doesn't mean they are harmless.
Pingtung 15-06-2004, 12:02:AM Our defense has held up as expected but we have absolutely NO help in the midfield. Anytime we've gotten the ball out of the defense, we either lob it long or lose possession. I'd say that we've had only 2 good offensive possessions. We need a midfield for the 2nd half...
b-ytter 15-06-2004, 12:02:AM Great half by Denmark! Poulsen is ruuling in the midle!
I predicted 2-0 to Italy, but i my have to change that to 1-0 to Denmark!

Yea, I hope we pick it up too. But Sweden will be tougher because their attack is much stronger than Denmark and the defence is very strong too.
b-ytter 15-06-2004, 01:10:AM The best player on the field was Cristian poulsen he did great!
lplover2k2 15-06-2004, 01:10:AM Denmark played well;Italy was not very good as it was expected from it. The goalkeepers were really great tonight;Sorensen made some remarkable saves. good match
$teauA 15-06-2004, 01:10:AM This was a pretty good game overall. Both teams played their game at one point or another but it was all about Sorensen and Buffon they were both spectacular. In my opinion Camoranesi was horrible today and he shouldn't start against Sweden, he probably threw away at least 5 or 6 passes. Totti had his sparks but that free kick at the end was really dissapointing. Vieri was pretty good he had a couple of headers, Del Piero got his touches but didn't do anything with them it was probably because he almost constanly had 2 defenders on him but anyway pretty good game overall and this group should be interesting.

:: JJ :: 15-06-2004, 01:19:AM It could have been 3-3 but for the excellent goalkeeping that kept the game goalless. Sørensen played a blinder, denying Del Piero and that long range shot from Totti, and Buffon was good too, saving from Helveg, and then that double save late on when he blocked Tomasson's shot and then stuck a leg out at Rommedahl's rebound.
No way was that match boring!!!

The Keepers were awesome, Sorensten what a freak (H)
Cannavaro and Nesta were exceptional, apart from that Italy sucked. No chemistry in the midfield and for once Vieri was asleep. I expected Italy to open up a bit more than this, i can already see them playing long-ball counter-attacking football against Bulgaria :p

I don't understand why Del Piero was replaced.
Italys defense held up well and Buffon was good. Apart from that everything else was poor.
The midfield had no chemistry and Camoranesi was utter crap.
Gattuso came on for Zanetti but that didn't help too much either. All that trash talk by Gattuso .... what did he do when he got the chance ? Nothing as usual .
Trap should have replaced Perrotta with Pirlo .
Totti played couple of good through balls but they were wasted.
anyway, 0-0 .... at least it wasn't a loss.
Italy always start slow but get the job done.
Not too dissapointed.

He had a couple of decent chances in the 1st half but apart from that i didn't see much of him, maybe because Totti & Camoranesi were hogging all the possession.
Anyway, i don't thing it would've made much of a difference if Del Piero stayed on coz Cassano wasn't any better.

northstar 15-06-2004, 03:39:AM Denmark had a great game and deserved a win more than Italy, but a draw was fair considering how well both goaltenders played along with the defenders.
Italy's attack was anemic. Totti was ****e, and Vieri wasnt given much to work with. DP was allright and probably should have stayed on since he was causing some problems for Denmark. Pirlo would have helped perhaps but the midfield was allready being over run so who knows how that would tipped the scale of the midfield. Fiore, Cassano and Gatusso did nothing to prove they should be starting instread of the ones the substituted in for,
Denmark's attack was pressing but lacked finnish, and Buffon the MOM.

Italy always start slow but get the job done.
Not too dissapointed. but at this point (after the 2 other teams have played too) you'll have to admit that with these results the groups starting to look really interesting. Italy will have all the pressure in the world on them, when playing Sweden, while Bulgaria looks too weak to be a real opposing force for the other teams in the group.
So even though Italy tend to start slow, they could've used a win. And to achieve that, I wouldn't sub one of the two most creative players in the attacking department, for a young and unexperienced clinical finisher - type of player.
Totti was decent and did some great moves at times, but neither could he make the difference for Italy.
I was impressed by Cannavaro's defending. I haven't seen him play so much, and he really was a positive surprise. He's not someone brimming with class, like Paolo Maldini, but he certainly gets the job done.

Mikey 15-06-2004, 04:47:AM Pretty Disappointing, i was kinda shocked at how they played. Camoranesi should never play another game for the Azzurri, just an embarassing showing. modena_10 15-06-2004, 07:23:AM definitely not what i was expecting today, but a points a point, we got taught a lesson on how to use the wings, italy in the midfield looked uninspired, there were not enough balls going forward along the ground, everything was in the air, vieri looked terrible, it looked like he didnt put in any effort in some instances, i dont know what to say about camoranesi, he held onto the ball too long etc. totti had flashes of brilliance, didnt find the ball enough, but i guess its hard when all we do is send the long ball, had some good efforts on goal, but what a horrific tackle, lucky not to see a red
but on a good note cannavaro and nesta were amazing the middle of defence, i cant say enough about buffon, brilliant, zambrotta played very well. del piero impressed me a bit, he was actually attempting to tackle and won some challenges, but we need more work out of our wingers. cassano did not impress, i didnt know zanetti was on the pitch in the first half, i thought gattuso played well except for his card
and thomas sorenson.....wow, what a game he had
i believe, wait i know we will be seeing a different italian side against sweden on friday
calve11 15-06-2004, 07:33:AM Good job Denmark, you deserved the win. I was impressed.
Italy looked horrible today, and with Sweden coming up... am I the only 1 thinking that this won't be the "azzuri's" tourney?

soccerfan_10 15-06-2004, 07:35:AM Yeah it was a good game. Buffon had a good game, and the italian defense was good at times
sweden u did a good job but i didnt expected that from italy:kader:
IceBlu 15-06-2004, 08:45:AM Sweden didn't play Italy.
Mikey 15-06-2004, 09:11:AM Im not as disapointed with the result as much as i am with the way they played. Camoranesi played awful, and will be replaced by Pirlo/Fiore. Hopefully that can make things better. Still, Italy always starts slow, so i hopefully they can show wat they can really do against sweden.

was just gonna say that.
I don't understand why Del Piero was replaced.
Trap didnt want an other bottle kicked at his face by replacing Vieri
santino 15-06-2004, 10:08:AM what trap was thinking when he brought on gattuso:
"hmmm....this game is missing something.....ahh yess, the caveman!!!"
jumbo 15-06-2004, 10:09:AM lol ^
Elder 15-06-2004, 11:03:AM I;m not a big Italy fan, and the way they played today confirmed why I am not...
They are just boring. The Danes tore them apart all day long. Too bad they didn't get a goal or two to make it interesting.
modena_10 15-06-2004, 11:11:AM goals could have gone either way, the only reason it was a tie was because of the keepers, the goals would have opened the game up, the game was entertaining, the danes wide play is nice to watch, italy in the 2nd showed alot of attacking football which was nice
and i like gattuso, hes a hardworker that no matter what gives 110%, and hes calabrese. he probably ran to portugal. i think the reason he doesnt play well with the azzurri is because he trys to hard, he doesnt seem to settle in. although the friendly vs tunisia, i think he had his best game for italia. he was playing with pirlo
i think the 2 of them together could do good things for italia, but we will never know unless trap puts it in motion
henry#14 15-06-2004, 11:12:AM what the hell was that:o :| denmark outplayed italy so much during the game. Vieri had like one good chance and that was it. i'm also impressed by the way Rommedahl(sp) played, he ran riot down the right. the only defender who even stands a chance of catching up to him is Zambrotta otherwise.....Totti also looked uninspired, and WTF did Trap sub off Del Piero. Gattuso was just, i don't even know what to say, in this game-looked a bit unco. as well. Pirlo would've been more effective IMO coz he woulda added more to the attack. And that challenge by Totti on Laursen:| the best player for Italy had to have been Buffon esp. his double save near the end(H)
EDIT-WTF was Totti thinking coming out with that haircut?:|
Elder 15-06-2004, 11:15:AM That Totti challenge should have been a red card, plain and simple.
Goo Goo boy 15-06-2004, 11:17:AM That was the most fantastic game till now..im cheering for Denmark now=) and Italy disappointed me so much..whats up with Zanetti over Gattuso? Gattuso is 100 times better, i never understood why such a bad player as zanetti plays for the squadra azurra..it must be an inter contract with the federation cos Materazzi is ****ty too..anyway today only the defense(except panucci, why da **** does he play over oddo?) and the god buffon were great for Italy..

i have to agree. and what about Gattuso's spectacular tumble:rolleyes:
modena_10 15-06-2004, 11:18:AM yeah i thought that was a straight red, he got really lucky, terrible tackle and the reason why i think he looked uninspired is because he saw so little of the ball, they key to italy is the play going through him, thats why we need pirlo in the midfield

yep. the strategy Trap was using just didn't work. and PLEASE let Fiore start ahead of Camoranesi next time he was crap. was all casual only to play a crap ball

oh god please, i will pray everynight till the sweden game, i hope everyone now knows why i was against him making the squad, miccoli is looking really good about now
and i do think that the system works, its just that we need a much stronger midfield, today there was no intensity, there heads were somewhere else(well except buffon, nesta, cannavaro, and zambrotta)
Alistair 15-06-2004, 11:54:AM I'm happy with the result. Glad that Denmark got a point out a possibly hard encounter.. Hopefully now we can go now and deal to Bulgaria and then maybe Sweden so we can qualify :)

why so defensive italy??? whyyyyy???
someone said "I hope Italy learned a lesson" HAH yeah right, you'd think they'd learn a lesson lossing to korea, or to wales... but they never do.
On paper I think they have one of hte best squads in the world, if not THE best. They need to try, and forget this defensive crap.
You and people that say this sort of thing are either blind, idiots or jealous. The attackers SUCKED. There was 3 forwards and a winger out there playing the same system as the so highly regarded attack of Real Madrid. Just the same as Real Madrid played bad games, so did Italy but no one calls Real Madrid a 'defensive' team.
So, I fart in your general direction for making such crap posts.
Elder 15-06-2004, 12:05:PM The way Sweeden looked today, they are going to tear Italy apart. The danes ran rampant all over them today, and it was rather fun to watch. But I never count out the Italians in a tourney. Nor the Germans for that matter. Both teams always show up.
BUT, for all the whining that the Italians did at WC 2002 (and the whining was justified regarding the refs) they got very lucky today...
If that was Collina reffing the game today, Totti would be sitting for 3 games.
kennethmok84 15-06-2004, 12:07:PM "Denmark should have won"
It is true that Denmark has control the midfield. However, in terms of real scoring opporunities, to be honest, the Italians has slightly more. If you don't agree, it is at least a balance match. (both teams have 12 shots) I am sure than most people don't like Italians' conservative approach, but it is in some way effective. How? they can be totally dominated by their opponents like they did today, an still turns out to be a balance match in terms of scoring opportunities. Guess what happen if Italians play well and play a balance match in terms of ball possession.
"Why did Trap sub Del Piero"
I know people love Del Piero, but I would have to say that Del Piero play as bad as Cassano. Since this substitution did not help the Italians, it was a bad substitution by Trap. However, at least the problem was not getting Del Piero out of the pitch.
"Gattuso is 100 times better than Zanetti"
Both players play poorly. I was hoping that Trap would sub in Pirlo instead to help the offense.
"Why was Camoranesi on the pitch"
I have to agree. I would rather saw Cassano even though Cassano was not good either.
Final Thoughts
Great job by the Italians defensively. Buffon, Cannavaro, Nesta are superb, Zambrotta and Panucci are solid. However, the offensive showing has to be very disappointed. The first match is never easy and there are time to improve.
modena_10 15-06-2004, 12:25:PM if it was collina i think that tomassan would be sitting a game also for his numerous dives in the box, i thought he wasnt like that
but yeah totti deserved a red

youre an idiot.
It was anything BUT boring. It could have easily been 3-3 or 4-4 if it wasn't for the keepers.
Goal-less - YES. Boring - NO.
You always like to take jabs at Italian footy.... so piss off.
Anyone who watched it will agree with me that the game was an entertaining goalless draw.
Alistair 15-06-2004, 01:23:PM Yeah and some truely awesome goalkeeping as well..
modena_10 15-06-2004, 01:32:PM indeed, at certain points of the game i was preparing myself for the worst but gigi came through big, very entertaining but for some of the wrong reasons
Alistair 15-06-2004, 01:39:PM Yep. Also Sorenson's two saves in quick succession near the break were great too..

I don't know what dives those were. The one he got a yellow card for was silly. He barely got pushed, and then immediately got back to his feet to try and keep playing. He never once asked for a penalty.
