Keane Makes Hero's Return
Roy Keane was given a hero’s reception at Turner’s Cross by a capacity 8000 strong crowd as he returned to his home town of Cork.
The former Republic of Ireland captain played his first game in the city in over a decade when leading a Manchester United reserve team into action against local side Cobh Ramblers, Keane’s former club.
The game, a fixture designed to raise funds for the Eircom League First Division outfit, was sold out weeks in advance and glorious sunshine in the south of Ireland created a carnival atmosphere at the ground.
Keane remains hugely popular with the people of Cork, a fact borne out by the sight of so many United and Republic of Ireland jerseys with his name and trademark number 16 adorning the back.
Keane was given a standing ovation as he led United onto the pitch and although his performance was subdued prior to his substitution just before the hour there was no doubting the crowd’s adoration for him.
At the final whistle a large swathe of the attendance converged upon Keane, causing scenes of hysteria as he met his hometown fans.
Manchester United won the game in the 90th minute through Kenny Cooper’s strike but they were given a run for their money by a Cobh side driven on by the sight of their illustrious opponents.
Mads Timm had given United a first-half lead which was equalised by Robert Brosnan four minutes before the break.
Cobh did their best in the second half but, even allowing for Cooper’s last minute winner, there was no doubt the night belonged to Keane.

Typical friendly for Chelsea.
The game was really just played out after Chelsea scored. We looked dominant throughout the game, however that was to be expected considering the opposition.
We also have to remember that we haven’t got all our players back after EURO 2004. We will be ready for Man United on the 15th, it is all good.

Not Much To Learn At Oxford
Saturday, Jul 17, 2004
José Mourinho’s first match in charge of Chelsea was a strange affair because there was so little to learn from it. Half the first team is still on holiday, and those that have trained are barely midway through the preseason cycle. It was a patchwork side that earned the draw. The manager was realistic about the performance.
“What I’m pleased with is the attitude of the players,” he said, “because it is not easy to play football when you are tired, and they were already tired when the match started. I asked them for a big effort to compete and they did it, without the quality they will have in the future to play with. I cannot ask too much from Cole, Géremi, Kezman, with so few days training. I cannot ask more from the young boys.
“The objective was achieved, because it was to put them in a competitive situation against players who were much more ready in their preparation. In fact some of them couldn’t sprint because they were so tired, others as time passed their performance went down.”
Double training and conditioning naturally take their toll at this time of year, he said.
“After this period of hard work will arrive a period of compensation when they become sharp. The big problem is for the others who start training on Monday who will go through the same process later. They will go to the US and play top teams, Celtic, Roma, Milan, and will be in the same moment as the ones today there.
“But this is preseason and you try to do your best with the players for when the real thing starts.”
Busy Joe Cole, who curtailed his holiday to return early to training just this week, was substituted at half-time.
“I took him off because he couldn’t give more,” explained José, “and it was a risk.”
Although he considered it “unfair” and potentially confusing to single out players for praise, José was impressed by the potential of goalscorer Mateja Kezman – “especially when he’s really sharp and when he has quality players behind him. More than 50% of the players were not here. I didn’t have Duff, Robben, any left sided player or the creative ones like Lampard.”
José explained that he would “never play Géremi, Parker and Smertin in the same team because they are too similar.”
Mutu is “a little injured” and was not risked.
Russia international Alexei Smertin was another strong debutant. “He must be more confident in the future – and I told him this at half-time,” said José. “I want him to show more personality, because he is in a position to control play. But he gave me good information about his style of play, tactical position on the pitch.
“Geremi did a big effort playing out of his usual position.”
“I told the players before the game I was not interested in the result," he summed up. "But even if you play two against two with friends, you don’t like to lose. We didn’t win, we didn’t lose. What I asked the players to do was compete, and they competed.”
Oxford’s boss, of course, is our former assistant manager Graham Rix. He preferred not to comment on Chelsea today, dwelling on the work still needed on his own team after today’s showing. But what he did say was positive.
“I think they’re on a different planet now,” he said. “To Man U, anyone. They’re in a league of their own, and with Mr Abramovich’s backing, they can go and do whatever they want – providing they make the right decisions.
“I think Chelsea will have a very, very successful season.”

Charlton tuned up for their forthcoming pre-season tour of the Far East with a comprehensive 8-0 thrashing of Welling.
The Premiership club opened up a 3-0 half-time lead thanks to a brace from Jason Euell and Graham Stuart's strike.
After the break, striker Jonatan Johansson also scored twice, before goals from Lloyd Sam, Jamal Campbell-Ryce and Stacy Long completed the win.

dubcrazy 19-07-2004, 01:06:AM Celtic began their pre-season preparations with a comfortable 2-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday afternoon.
Goals from John Hartson and Neil Lennon were enough to give the Scottish champions an easy victory.
Celtic started brightly and broke the deadlock after just nine minutes with John Hartson marking his return to fitness with a goal.
Former Fulham loanee Bobby Petta created the goal breaking down left and crossing for Momo Sylla who in turn fed Hartson to fire home past Ross Flitney.
Sylla and Stephen Pearson went close to adding to the lead as Celtic continued to dominate early on.
Fulham came more into the contest as the first half wore on with Collins John testing David Marshall and Zat Knight heading over the top.
Fulham boss Chris Coleman changed his complete line-up for the second half and the alterations handed the initiative to Celtic.
Stilian Petrov and Craig Beattie were both denied by Mark Crossley before Lennon doubled the lead converting from the penalty spot after Petrov had been hauled down by Crossley.
Newcastle ended their tour of the Far East on a winning note with a penalty shoot-out victory over Kitchee after the game ended 1-1 in Hong Kong.
The Magpies had been beaten in a penalty shoot-out earlier in the week against Thailand, but they made no mistake this time scoring from all their attempts.
Newcastle were stunned after just 14 minutes when former Chelsea star Marcel Desailly, playing as a guest for Kitchee, headed home from a corner.
Another guest player for the hosts almost doubled the lead on 37 minutes when former Middlesbrough ace Fabrizio Ravanelli forced Steve Harper into a fine save.
Newcastle drew level on 63 minutes with new boy James Milner netting his first goal for the club with a fine strike from the edge of the area after being set-up by Shola Ameobi.
Neither side could find a winner in the remaining 27 minutes sending the game into a penalty shoot-out.
Both sides were successful with their first six kicks before Shay Given saved Cheung's effort allowing Aaron Hughes to net the clinching spot-kick.

johnnybrubacker 19-07-2004, 04:28:PM Novo scores two on Rangers debut
RANGERS ushered in a new era in the leisurely surroundings of regional Austria, with a comfortable 4-0 win over SC Furstenfeld last night that included two goals from new signing Nacho Novo.
In temperatures of 30C-plus, Alex McLeish’s side proved too hot for a team that play in the Austrian fifth division.
Novo was the most impressive player on show and scored in both halves. His first was a fantastic solo effort, while the second was a header from a Peter Lovenkrands cross.
Rangers also gave a debut to Marvin Andrews but their other summer signings Dado Prso, Alex Rae, Jean-Alain Boumsong and Dragan Mladenovic had to be content to watch from the sidelines. Rarely threatened by their youthful opponents, Rangers took the lead after 20 minutes when 17-year-old Ross McCormack guided Chris Burke’s teasing cross past the keeper with a cushioned header. Barely a minute later McCormack missed an easier chance when he sliced an effort wide of the target. Novo’s first goal came when he collected the ball wide on the left flank and marauded infield before arcing a sweet shot beyond the keeper.
His second ended the game as a contest and as the Ibrox side eased the pace notably before Lovenkrands completed the scoring.

Not according to Sky Sports News...or should I say Shoddy Sports News.
Get yer heads out of Roman's arse.
French international striker Djibril Cisse made a low-key debut for Liverpool as The Reds were held to a 1-1 friendly draw against Wrexham. The Welsh outfit stunned their illustrious opponents when Trinidad and Tobago international Hector Sam fired them ahead after 14 minutes. However, French youngster Anthony Le Tallec hit back for Rafa Benitez's men, but that was the end of the scoring in the contest at The Racecourse Ground.

Fulham have now lost against both Old Firm clubs during this pre-season after Rangers sealed a 1-0 win at Craven Cottage.
The only goal of the game came in the second half, but it was a fantastic effort which sent the massive Gers support crazy.
Dado Prso was the man who struck as he executed a brilliant overhead kick to convert Chris Burke's knock-down.
Ipswich Town inflicted a 2-1 defeat on newly promoted Crystal Palace at Portman Road.
Town went ahead early on when Drissa Diallo headed home from a corner.
Palace levelled just five minutes before the interval when Shaun Derry took a quick free kick and found the back of the net.
The Championship side quickly came back at Palace and exciting young striker Dean Bowditch netted to complete the scoring.
Jermain Defoe grabbed a brace for Tottenham, but Hull City managed to hold Spurs 2-2 at The KC Stadium.
Defoe opened the scoring just before the interval with a low drive.
Hull levelled via the penalty spot with Stuart Green, before Defoe struck again with a nice finish.
Peter Taylor's men then came back for a second time when Northern Ireland star Stuart Elliott struck.
Aston Villa continued their good pre-season form with a 3-0 win over Jonkoping.
David O'Leary's men were 2-0 ahead at the interval with young defender Liam Ridgewell and Marcus Allback scoring.
On loan star Carlton Cole added the third in the second period.
Middlesbrough secured a 2-0 success at Preston North End.
England Under-21 star Stewart Downing opened the scoring with nicely taken volley after 18 minutes.
Slovakian Szilard Nemeth made it five goals in three pre-season games when he made it 2-0 in the second half after coming off the bench.
A Boro second string went down 1-0 at Scarborough.
Manchester City had to come from behind at Belle Vue to grab a 1-1 draw with Doncaster Rovers.
Veteran striker Leo Fortune-West gave Rovers a first half lead after capitalising on an error from Shaun Wright-Phillips.
The City midfield then made amends when he was on hand to secure a share of the spoils for Kevin Keegan's men with a nicely taken effort just after the interval.
Portsmouth eased to a 4-1 win over Torquay at Plainmoor.
Goals from Arjan De Zeeuw, Yakubu Aiyegbeni and a brace from Matt Taylor were enough to give Harry Redknapp's men the victory with Adebayo Akinfenwa netting a consolation for Torquay from the penalty spot.
Bolton fell to a 2-1 defeat to Bradford in a testimonial for long-serving defender Wayne Jacobs.
Goals from Lewis Emanuel and Jacobs (penalty) were enough to give the League Two side a morale-boosting win with Henrik Pedersen netting for the visitors.
Patrick Boyle handed an inexperienced Everton side a 1-0 win at non-league Formby.
Paul Sturrock will be delighted with his side's efforts after they eased to an 8-0 victory over Asebro in Sweden.
Captain Jason Dodd opened the scoring after just eight minutes and soon added to that through David Prutton.
Peter Crouch then got his name on the score sheet on the half hour, just minutes before Brett Ormerod opened his account.
Crouch bagged another before the interval as he made the score 5-0.
The Saints added three more in the second period as Graeme Le Saux, Marian Pahars and Ormerod, again, struck.

TRENTO - Inter beat Shanghai International 4-0 in their third pre-season friendly at Trento's Stadio Briamasco. After Emre's first-half header, Julio Cruz doubled for Inter with a sweetly-struck penalty kick in the 48th minute then ten minutes later made it 3-0 with a right-footed shot from a Martins assist. Nicola Ventola completed the rout with a first-time shot from Riccardo Meggiorini's short pass in the 80th minute.

We did play well, but were a bit mince in the final third. They showed their quality by taking their chances.
Hopefully we're firing for Dundee next week! (H)
