Yanks Abroad currently without a team: Zach Thornton, Tony Sanneh and Greg Vanney. Again, this is only a list of players who might have some signifigance for the US NT. There are somewhere around 150 Americans that play professionally outside of the US.

Sanneh negotiated with MLS but they couldn't come to an agreement. He wanted max salary... a bit too much to ask for I suppose but then again Nurenberg asked him to re-sign for $700,000 a year (he declined).
If Vanney comes back, he would become the ONLY good left back in MLS.

I wasn't sure about their status with the club. Have they seen any first-team action (including friendlies)? Or are they at least regulars with the reserve squad?
Bobby 24-07-2004, 03:29:AM Frankie played in Carling cup (He's behind Sol Campbell, Kolo Toure and Senderos at the moment), Karbassiyoon i'm not sure about.
Hendrik 24-07-2004, 03:29:AM Sanneh was really good. It's a shame that he was such a greedy player.
I haven't seen van Buskirk but the other 4 Americans belong to the best players in their teams. They fit well into the German style. (Y)
xxxFLYERxxx 24-07-2004, 03:35:AM How far away do you think Spector and Simek are from joining the national team?
Bobby 24-07-2004, 03:36:AM Simek might be very close, because he's still at Arsenal and the team cut ALOT of players this summer.
Mikey 24-07-2004, 03:51:AM Giovanni Rossi, the guy Man Utd signed from Parma was born and raised in New Jersey.... but plays for Italys under 19 team

Not that close IMO... I mean as soon as either of the two starts getting good first-team minutes, he's a lock for the national team. But until that happens, they have a lot of guys in front of them in central defense... Pope, Boca, Gibbs, Berhalter, Mastroeni... not to mention a guy like Chad Marshall who at 19 is already one of the top defenders in MLS. For right now, Onyewu would be a better bet to get capped than either Simek or Spector. But that could change very quickly.

Canizalez plays for Bremen's youth or second team so I don't know him, sorry. The same applies to that guy from Saarbrücken. I will keep an eye on him this season.
De Guzman is a key player in Hannover's gamers. He's aslo the second captain. Last year he was injured over a few weeks and his team wasn't able to win any games without him. Leverkusen were interested in him a few weeks ago but Hannover didn't let him go.
Well Stalteri is a starter for the team which won the league and the cup. Nuff said. :crazyboy:
Mikey 24-07-2004, 05:07:AM Much Obliged. It wouldve been nice if De Guzman went to Leverkusen though. Wouldve gotten to play CL this season.
Anyways, i wont be totally satisfied until the day i see an American or Canadian playing in the top two leagues (La Liga and Serie A)

Where does he play for Necaxa? I assume as a central defender?
I'm interested in his development, Hernandez took the road less traveled by going to Mexico after getting kicked out by the Revolution (ouch!). Most players in his situation would have tried to find another MLS club or tried their luck in Europe. His move might become a precedent for other (mediocre) American players seeking to better themselves by playing in what is admittedly a better league.
Maybe he'll come back to MLS to play for Chivas USA?
bbranco10 24-07-2004, 10:46:AM Yeah Nexaca i remember him at the revolution, he had great long shots all the time. Very good shooter.

Dwayne DeRosario (San Jose Earthquakes)
Pat Onstad (San Jose Earthquakes)
Felix Brilliant (New England Revolution)
:p
Also Olivier Occean, he was a Metros fourth-round draft pick but Odd Grenland (Norway) stole him from them after the two teams played in the La Manga preseason tournament. Probably because they offered him more than the $28,000 a year he would have been making in MLS as a rookie.

From the few games I saw (its just so hard to watch Necaxa games, they play with like 8 defenders) he played central defender on the left side. I'm not sure if thats his natural position but thats where I saw him play.
And he has gotten better, because I remember how you and bjmenge used to tell me how much he sucked. :p And from what I've seen recently from him he didnt seem that bad, so he must be improving. (Y)

Maybe, though if he decided to go play in the Mexican league wouldnt you think he'd try to stay there. By the way he played a better club could sign him (not Toluca of course :D ) and give him more playing time.
You said he could of tried to sign for another MLS team, so if he didnt do it before you think he'd do it now?

New York native Peter Philipakos, who had been in negotiations with AEK Athens, has been snatched up by bitter rivals Olympiakos where he will join the newly signed Rivaldo and be eligible for Champions League play.
The former American University (Washington, D.C.) standout had previously signed a 3 1/2 year with AEK in January after impressing in trials in December 2003. But after serious cash issues at the club led to a mass restructuring of many of the players' contracts, the two sides grew far apart on a new deal which allowed Olympiakos to pounce.

Caponedawg 10-08-2004, 08:51:AM Onyewu opens well for Liege
Robert Price, USSOCCERUK.COM
Giant American defender Oguchi Onyewu started and played 90 minutes on Saturday for Standard Liege as the club travelled to Lierse for the season opener and drew 1-1.
Playing central defence the physically imposing 6-4, 205-pound Onyewu anchored the Liege backline. In the 87th minute, he picked up a yellow card as he fouled a Lierse attacker to prevent a dangerous scoring threat. For his efforts Onyewu received the highest marks on his team from the the Belgian newspapers.
The opening day effort did not show Liege, who finished third in the league the year before, in its best light.
"This was not a good result for us," said Onyewu speaking after the match by telephone. "They scored against the run of play. It wasn't a terrible result but we should have done better. Fortunately, all the top three finishers from last year either lost or tied on opening day."
With his play last year at La Louviere and in the run-up to this season Onyewu has caught the attention of the Belgian press, at least. Onyewu made the cover of Foot magazine with a multi-page photo spread and article, two weeks ago, wherein he was dubbed "The Giant American of Liege" and recognized for his impressive play.
The magazine is the largest sports magazine in Belgium, equivalent to Sports Illustrated of the United States.
Next up is the Liege home-opener as the club hosts Charleroi on Friday.

Does it really matter? The US is a nation of imigrants. You don't see people calling John O'Brien 'Irish-American'.
"Yeah, being American, I think at the beginning it was a little tough getting people to take me seriously, but the fact that I speak fluent Greek made it a little easier," Peter told YA. "All I can do is go out and play, work hard every day and prove that I belong out here."

DaMarcus Beasley (PSV Eindhoven)

Peter Philipakos (Olympiacos)
Robbie Russell (Rosenborg)
Zak Whitbread (Liverpool)
Not sure if Simek will even make the bench for Arsenal's games (I'm certain Kabassiyoon won't). Some more insight on this? Brian? Bobby?
But anyway that's got to be a record. Seven yanks in the Champions League group stages.

A translated Portuguese article on Kenny Cooper:
Cooper is a finisher
He has the air of a tourist. Always smiling, he asks many questions and pays attention to all the details. He is Kenny Cooper, the young American who Manchester United loaned to Académica. Without the time for great feats against Braga, Cooper has been distinguishing himself in training sessions, showing sufficient effectiveness in the area of finishing, much to the dismay of the three goalkeepers in the squad. A strong and precise finish, with right or left foot, is the main quality of the American, always advised by his father, who accompanies him in this adventure in Portugal.

Gooch named third-best transfer in the Belgian league:

Three American-born players were on the field at the same time for Man United in their Carling Cup match vs. Crystal Palace. Howard started with Spector and Rossi coming off the bench. However it should be noted that Rossi has not so far shown any intention of playing for the US, he's currently on one of Italy's youth squads (U-21 I think). He's still spend considerable time in the US though, so there's a chance he might change his mind.
Oh and yeah, O'Brien injured himself again while playing his first match for Ajax in almost a year. I'm speechless.
Mathis is out of favor with Hannover's coach (I wonder why? :D ) Hopefully he can transfer to another Bundesliga side.
Vinnie Jones 12-11-2004, 12:41:AM First time i read this thread and i noticed Run DmB mentioning Kenny Cooper.
I´ve been following his career pretty closely since he joined Académica, who is the team i support in Portugal. I live and study in Coimbra and i watch about 80% of Académica´s home games.
Académica de Coimbra is one of the oldest and most respected football clubs in Portugal. The club was founded by students of the University of Coimbra (who is one of the oldest in Europe, founded in 1290).
I was quite curious when i saw that Académica got Kenny Cooper from Manchester United on loan. We really needed a striker with his caractheristics. Good physical presence, tall with strong heading capability. Although he is not a real technical player, he has reasonable technic.
He is slowly adjusting to the portuguese Superliga. He had a couple of chances and played ok. He made one goal assist in one of the games. I personally think that he is a good asset for our team. I consider him a breath of fresh air in our football. Him, Stephen McPhee (Scottish) and Paul Murray (English) of Beira-Mar. You can easily understand why i say this because 80% of the players purchased by portuguese teams are brazilian, who are cheaper but most of the time adopt unprofessional behaviours and are slackers.
Cooper is a humble player with great attitude and is an extremely hard working player. He never gives up.
I honestly think that when he settles (new football type and new country) that he will get more chances. He is the perfect partner for our major player Dário, who is a more technical player who needs a team mate with good physical presence to help him battle strong defences (he is usually out numbered).
He is a young player and from what ive seen in training and matches, he has lots of potencial. I also see alot of merits in the way he is managing his career by experiencing different types of football (english and portuguese).
I´ll keep you informed on how he is performing.

A very big "thank you" for the first-hand account.
It's not easy to find info on Cooper and how he's doing at Academica so I really appreciate it. (Y)

If that's the case why isn't the MLS involved? I'm sure can do the college thing while being in Project40. If he's that good the MLS should be all over this kid instead of letting him go to college where he will lose time and skills development.

I have a german article about it, it says that will leave Hannover to play in the MLS. Hannover Manager Ilja Kenzig said that, all three sides want to reach a deal.

peruytu 17-12-2004, 01:51:AM It would be in the best interest of the MLS to send Mathis to the new Utah team, Real Salt Lake... just to have a player with "name" there. I'm sure this will happen since there arent that many Americans with "name" in the MLS anymore.
Anyways it would be good for an expansion team to get Mathis... since he can't go to other expansion team, Chivas USA.

ColumbusGunners 17-12-2004, 11:16:AM I have never been a Mathis fan. Obviously I want him to do well especially when he is playing for US. but if he is in bad form(which he has been for a while now) he doesn't make other players better or create for other players. Anyway I still wouldn't mind him in Columbus because we need someone who can put the ball in the net because we have the individuals who can create.
