I'm interested in people's opinon as to what determines a players rate of improvement. It's true that the training schedule you use will definately affect them but there must be other factors as well. Is it possible that certain stats have to be high for them to improve quicker???

The stat is called work rate. A high morale will also increase speed of improvement. There might be some more.

The hidden attribute "Professionalism" has quite a bearing too. The coaches stats are very important, including Motivation and Discipline.

Morale is definitely very important in my opinion, not only for improvement of stats......
woah you lot have missed the biggy, Ambition
main attributes for players rate of improvement:
Ambition
Professionalism
Work Rate
Determination
Age vs Current/Potential Ability
Morale (only to some extent)
as Dave said, your coaches abilites are also very important.
TROD.
Yup. Coaches' abilities are definitely important. Even if your player have a really high potential ability, he won't improve that fast if the coaches at the team have really lousy stats.
mind you it kind of goes without saying i suppose
TROD.
playing games also helps.

That's not always true, you get some stonking players at clubs with crappy coaches. Litex's coaches suck but they usually do a good job of training Todorov until I take him (H)
Whoops about the ambition too :$
