As part of my studies I have the oppertunity to go overseas next year for at least 1 year to study. One of the options is Byron Bay, Australia.
I know absolutely nothing about the area but I heard it was good for surfing and it was a lively place to live?

Can anyone give me some info, what the weather like? good surfing? good beaches? good bars? is it fun to live? etc.

Thanks:)

There's next to nothing in Byron Bay as far as I can recall, it has a lighthouse and it's the easternmost part of mainland Australia. It also might have been a good surfing spot, I dunno, can't recall too clearly.

Yes, i have been there quite a few times and it's one of the premium locations on the New South Wales northern coastline, populated by people/environmentalists who fight tooth and nail to keep the place free of massive housing and commercial developments etc,and who can blame them hey. It's very expensive to buy property there due to the many wealthy and uber rich celebs who have settled there. It is located just a tad south of the superb Tweed Valley that is situated on the New South Wales / Queensland border.

what the weather like? - It's a sub tropical climate.
good surfing? - Yep
good beaches? - Yep
good women -- OH yeah.
good bars? dunno, i usually buy my booze in a 24 pack and flop out on the beach usually ending up very pleasantly pissed. :hump:

more info from this google link.

Byron Bay is quite a good place, although it defintiely has that feeling of being a 'tourist town' if you know what I mean. The good thing is that it is but one of a number of similar beaches along the coast in the area, and the distance between each one is not too great. I believe BB is the easternmost point in Aussie, so thats why it has become THE place probably. Most of the shops are beach/ surf oriented, and yes there is a lighthouse. It is quite cool to watch the dolphins playing, there seems to be heaps of them around there.

But yes it is a pretty good place. I stayed for some time at the next beach along the coast, Lennox Head, which is smaller and less touristy. But BB is also a congregation point on New Years Eve with all the hoopla that goes along with it.

Definitely. Not sure what it is like in winter though - in summer the place goes off.

I saw on the official BB site that average temp in Summer is between 21 and 28 celcius and in Winter it's betwen 15 and 21 celcius. Not bad if you ask me:p
