More than a club

Futbol Club Barcelona was founded on 29th November 1899 on the initiative of a Swiss enthusiast called Hans Maximilian Gamper, popularly known by the name of Joan Gamper. Liverpool are believed to have agreed a deal to sign Barcelona winger Luis Garcia, according to reports emanating from Spain.

Spanish radio claims Barcelona have agreed to the sale of the Spanish international after signing Samuel Eto'o from Real Mallorca.

Liverpool were initially thought to be keen on taking Garcia on loan for the whole of next season, but reports claim they have agreed a €9 million (£6 million) deal for the wide man.

Garcia's first team chances seem limited for the new season as Barca have been busy in the transfer market bringing in the likes of Deco and Ludovic Giuly at Camp Nou.

The 26-year-old did not train with Barcelona on Thursday and it is believed that the move could be announced as soon as Friday.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is a big fan of the midfielder and is keen to bolster his options having lost Vladimir Smicer to injury and Danny Murphy to Charlton.

Garcia, who is predominantly a left-sided midfielder, can play in a variety of positions and would add options to Benitez's team.

Benitez tried to sign Garcia when he was in charge of Valencia, but it appears he has finally got his man and he will become his second signing from Spain following the capture of Josemi from Malaga.

It would be a surprise if L Garcia leaves, and it's not a good surprise at all.. I hope it's not true.

I really hope we don't sell him. He played well at the end of last season and so far this pre-season he's been class but i guess we have to take some € in return.

About L. Garcia, I've heard his release clause is €9m and Liverpool would pay it..

Txiki says Liverpool wants to pay L. Garcia's clause (9 mil), but the player told him that he'd rather stay (in the right conditions). Txiki wants to find out what the contract offer would be to see if Barça can work something out to keep him.

Barca now have all of the pieces in place....the next trick is to make this great team on paper into a great team on the field.....
That is not as easy....I think Rijkgaard is a good DT who has the ability to do this....he seems to have the players on his side....let's see what happens with the squad.....I hope they continue with no ego problems....

Anyone heard anything about Saviola? Is he going to Monaco?
I think he should stay....3 strikers should be an easy rotation and you can cover injuries....bad days etc....I don't think that Saviola is that expendable.....

i think you guys lack ONE more defender... cause Marquez maybe on his way out if Sylvinho or Edmilson don't get their UE passports, and only Oleguer and Puyol as CB is not too much depth IMO

Edmilson has a european passport?

Edmilson doesn't have it yet, but supposedly he will get it before the season starts

Both Edmilson and Sylvinho will have it ,if Sylvinho doesn't even have it already.

Eto'o is better and younger.I'd prefer him over ANYONE at the mo.

Eto'o cannot play lone center forward.... I would put both larsson and eto'o together
deco, xabi, edmilson (if he gets passport) and ronaldinho in midfield.. and the same back 4

I think that Eto'o and Larsson are different....they will both be useful in the right situations.....

We can't play 2 forwards.It's too much and Giuly ,as will Dinho and Deco ,will play for sure so in that case Xavi would be benched but I wouldn't like that.

The def. is good.Edmilson would be a holding DM ,Xavi would help him and start attacks with Deco.Ronaldinho's magic would win games + Giuly's speed and striker abilities to support Eto'o + eto'o up front = no need for striker no.2.

I think that Rafa would be better in the holding role no? He plays there on the Mexican NT and he played there in Monaco....that's why they call him El Kaiser de Michoacan.....that's where Beckenbauer excelled.....

I think we should keep Saviola....you never know about injuries...the season is long and there are a lot of CL games and cup games to play.....

Has Oleguer been better than Marquez?

He was amazing the last season and I think he still can play better. I don't care if Marquez plays but I wouldn't stop the progression of Oleguer.

larsson is great, but Eto'o is a proven player in La Liga, so he knows how to attack some defence and he's fast, something that with Roonie and Giuly can be very useful, Larsson lacks speed.

i thought laporta had denied all rumors of saviola leaving to monaco..especially with his new spanish passport and all...

btw those rumors of Saviola going to Atletico for a first option on Torres is BS. Atletico owns Milan almost 23 M, and there have been already talks about Torres going to Milan, for next year... the price, the 23 M that atletico owns to them, plus something like 5 m. So Milan would only pay 5 m, that's why i think that rumor is crap.

Barca To Offload Saviola, Recber and Lopez

Barcelona officials have reportedly told forward Javier Saviola, goalkeeper Rustu Recber and midfielder Oscar Lopez to start looking for new clubs.
Saviola’s exit was all but confirmed when the club snapped up Cameroon international Samuel Eto’o from Mallorca.

However, Monaco do not have the cash to purchase Saviola on a transfer and if another club emerges with an offer, look for Barca to give transfer offers first priority.

As for Rustu Recber, the Turkish international has been unhappy with life at the club ever since he lost the starters' role last season. Once considered among the best shot-stoppers in Europe, Rustu’s stock has decreased dramatically since he joined the Spanish giants.

Lopez, whose contract with Barcelona runs until 2007, has also been told to pack his bags as he is not in the clubs plans for the upcoming season.

This article says (in Spanish) that Marquez won't leave because Edmilson will get the UE passport and if Sylvinho doesn't get it he would leave loaned. It also says that if Marquez leaves would be loaned and not transferred.

I said after the game of Parma that these games are just to get form for La Liga, it's not to be the best team in the world. It's good to see Deco and Eto'o, the two biggest transfers of this summer, playing well in their first game and it's better after a long wait.

and my club is a big club, thefore they don't go behind a club to sign a player they ask permission first. And obviously we have a good youth system since we haven't had the need to buy any players and still qualified for the UEFA cup.

i understand your frustration but its ultimately the player's and their parent's decision to leave. We just lost two great players to the Premiership in Cesc and Pique. Its just the way that system works right now. I agree it doesn't seem right but most if not all big clubs do it.

They are not amateur signings, they are players that have spent all their lifes in the youth system for the club, and they are given a chance cause they earnt it. Is quite different, as to not making any signings cause there is no money. Is a choice, that we have mantained for 100 yrs. And Valverde is quite happy about it.

Luis García moves to Liverpool

FC Barcelona and Liverpool FC have arrived at an agreement which sees the winger Luis García transferred to the Merseyside club.

I have seen Barca outclassing the opponent many times and they don't win.Only the result counts.So the win is all in all ,(Y) .Attractive play is a bonus.

I have my reserves if he's going to be successful in Barça... Not because he isn't a great player (he is), but because the last portuguese players before him to play in Barça didn't stay there too long... Simão (thank God he signed with Benfica!!! :D) and Quaresma... They all were number 20, like Deco...
I honestly hope that he shows all his magic and quality, he's a great player, and portuguese ;)

What a team they have this year! 2 games, 2 goals. Yesterday he was the man of the match, at least in the first half(he didn't play the second one), scored a nice goal and caused the free kick that Ronaldinho scored.

I dont think he is better. They are completely different players. I´ll be supporting Deco also. Not that i think he has anything to prove, after winning the Superliga MoM multiple times, Champions League and Uefa Cup. Im confident that if Deco performes well in a championship like La liga, ppl will eventually lose their doubts. Besides his experience, i think that leaving for Barça with that age will be a very important factor. Simão and Quaresma were too young when they joined Barcelona (19 i think). Let´s wait and see anyways.

A muchos ya les extrañó no ver a Ronaldinho recogiendo la copa de campeón al final del encuentro. Ahora se ha sabido que el brasileño no estaba para celebraciones. Soldevilla leaved football for a whole season because he was trying to stop taking drugs. This season he's back but maybe he's head is not fully recovered.

His agression to Ronaldinho was silly, unnecessary, dangerous and very violent.
