LONDON (Reuters)(DS) - Premier league side Sunderland is top of the football hooligan
table according to figures from the police intelligence service, the Independent on Sunday
said.
It said 223 Sunderland fans were arrested during the 1999-2000 season. Chelsea was
second on the list with 168 arrests and Manchester City third with 165.
At the other end of the table, second division Wycombe Wanderers and third division
Macclesfield Town had the best behaved supporters with no fans arrested.
The Independent said that 53 Sunderland fans had been arrested on a coach before a
game with Derby County after police learned they were planning to attack rival supporters.
It said 100 hooligans supporting Chelsea were stopped from going to a match against
London rivals Tottenham Hotspur after police discovered weapons including a meat
cleaver and a bottle of ammonia.
Eighty-eight fans from premier league champions Manchester United were arrested
during the season, 89 from Arsenal and 80 from Liverpool. Southampton fans had the best
record in the premier league with 15 arrests.
Millwall, whose fans have earned a reputation for violence, had the worst record among
division two sides with 102 arrests, while Welsh side Swansea headed the division three
list of shame with 30 fans arrested.
