View Full Version : The Old Firm Derby [P+R]
Hendrik 29-08-2004, 06:55:AM The game is later today at lunch time. I'm looking forward to this game especially because I'm gonna watch it together with a friend of mine who is a St. Pauli fan and supports Celtic.
Come on Celtic!
Parkhead hosts the first Old Firm derby of the season as Glasgow giants Celtic and Rangers meet in what is likely to be a frenetic encounter.
Martin O'Neill's physically imposing outfit took the honours last term, after winning each of their five encounters with their neighbours.
Alex McLeish has faced a barrage of criticism in midweek following the The Gers' European elimination, but after a busy summer in the transfer market, Rangers look to have added quality to their ranks.
However, whilst McLeish has seen his side falter this week, O'Neill is already plotting a lucrative UEFA Champions League campaign against Barcelona and Milan.
For Sunday's game, the charismatic Irishman is sweating on the fitness of Chris Sutton, with the former Chelsea hit-man struggling with a hamstring injury.
Exciting starlet Craig Beattie is a definite absentee with a groin strain, although lighter news comes in the form of Stanislav Varga and Jackie McManara both returning to training and they could feature.
McLeish's side have lost their last six derby encounters and have failed to register an Old Firm win at Celtic since March 2000.
However, despite the statistics, Rangers have included seven new faces to their squad and so perhaps history should be overlooked with regards to Sunday.
Croatian striker Dado Prso has formed a potentially prolific partnership with Nacho Novo and both players will be looking to impress those travelling from Ibrox.
Fiery midfielder Alex Rae will make his first Old Firm appearance and he could be joined by fellow new boys Gregory Vignal, Dragan Mladenovic, Marvin Andrews and Jean-Alain Boumsong.

IceBlu 29-08-2004, 10:02:PM Larsson or no Larsson ... Celtic > Rangers.
I'm not a fan of either of the Old Firm teams but as I absolutely hate Rangers, by default, I'd prefer that Celtic win.
However, it's getting pretty depressing seeing Rangers so uncompetitive.
I remember the bad years of the mid-90's when Rangers won the league every season and Celtic were pretty awful. Before each season had even started, it was a foregone conclusion that Rangers would win the title. That's when I started finding myself hoping that Celtic would improve, much as I disliked them, just to make the championship more interesting.
Now it's reversed and it's boring.
Rangers need to ditch McLeish and get in a new manager. Much as I hate to say it, the SPL needs a strong Rangers team, and Rangers under McLeish just doesn't look strong enough.
I almost wanted Rangers to win today, just make the SPL more interesting. But Celtic are 5 points clear of Rangers already. After only 4 games, it's already looking like a huge gap.
Another season of boredom....unless Aberdeen can spring a surprise :D .
Having said all that, it's always funny to see Rangers take a good humping :hump: (H) .
PSVFOREVER 29-08-2004, 11:17:PM What a goal (Y)(Y) I am more a Celtic man, don't know why, I guess everybody picks his favourite, it's not like I really care though:p
jackie4 29-08-2004, 11:25:PM Remember this great quote in the thread where we gave our predictions for this season?
Buba3d said "Alex rae is gonna have lennon for breakfast, lunch and dinner and maybe a midnight snack"
Come on Buba lay off the drink!!!!

Rangers#50# 30-08-2004, 03:49:AM I can`t believe we are 5 points behind already.
Hendrik 30-08-2004, 03:53:AM Rangers want to sign Swiss international Hakan Yakin according to McLeish.
He could do well in the Scottish league.
Rangers#50# 30-08-2004, 04:04:AM Yeah, Yakin was at the match today and it looks like it will happen.
Well, Yakin was at Parkhead to watch the Old Firm derby match and must have been thinking that this team called "Rangers" are complete and utter wank. However, they pay massive wages, so I might just sign for them and make myself a millionaire, irrespective of how pathetic they are in at football, particularly in European competitions.

my quotes are always the best.
Anyways he did and so did lennon, anyways new bhoy juninho could have been sent off for retaliation, if only they had that diddy of a linesman from last week.
P.S its amazing how many bloody glory hunters there are in this world, including this forum.
Bonzi 30-08-2004, 08:34:AM where can i download tompson's goal? :p

I agree with u about glory hunters. BUT the thing about the Old Firm match is that it's so huge people around the worlkd get into it and back one team or the other. If there was no Sky TV do u think think these forums would have anything like the same number of members? NO CHANCE. People who say they support Man Utd, Liverpool or Arsenal wouldn't even have heard of them.
Alistair 30-08-2004, 04:50:PM Rangers lose another one to Celtic  I hope this run doesn't last much longer :(

You can be GUARANTEED it won't last another 7 games. Football runs in cycles and in my lifetime Rangers have gone NINE YEARS without winning at Celtic Park between 1980 to 89 so this run of 4 years without winning at our place is nothing. As for the 7 games in a row, the next game is at Ibrox so the record could go there. Celtic also went 7 YEARS between 1994 and 2001 without an Ibrox victory so u can be sure the tables will turn to Rangers dominance and turn again towards Celtic.
PSVFOREVER 30-08-2004, 08:50:PM Or there stands up a second force in Scotland(H)
jackie4 30-08-2004, 09:23:PM Sorry PSV Forever! I don't get ur meaning.
