Grame Souness...

Newcastle have confirmed that Graeme Souness has agreed to take over as their new manager.

Sky Sports News revealed that Souness had told his own Blackburn players on Monday morning that he had quit his post at Ewood Park to move to St James' Park.

Terry Venables had reportedly met with The Magpies about taking over from Sir Bobby Robson, while Steve Bruce and David O'Leary were also on the short-list.

However, rumours began to grow on Monday that Blackburn boss Souness was in the frame and his odds to become the Newcastle boss were slashed by bookies as a result.

Magpies chairman Freddy Shepherd has now confirmed to Sky Sports News that Souness has agreed to take over at St James' Park.

Souness will take charge from Monday September 13, after Newcastle have ironically faced Blackburn in The Premiership.

"Graeme Souness leaves Blackburn Rovers today to take up the position as team manager of Newcastle United," said Shepherd's statement.

"Souness has been in talks with Newcastle over the weekend and he will take up his position next Monday, September 13.

"There will be a press conference on Monday when Souness will be officially unveiled as the new manager."

Blackburn chief executive John Williams confirmed that the two clubs had agreed on a compensation package over the weekend, after Rovers reluctantly agreed to Souness leaving.

"My reading of the situation is quite clear," said a statement from Williams. "Graeme is very reluctant to leave a job he considers one of the best in the business, but he views Newcastle as a massive opportunity and one he cannot resist.

"We wish him well for the future and thank him for four successful years. But now is the time to look forward and we need to focus all our energies on finding Graeme's successor.

"We have an excellent squad of players and have a lot to offer the new manager, not least a financially stable club, and we expect considerable interest in the position.

"It is time to move on, we know what we are looking for and anticipate a very strong list of applicants."

Newcastle should have gotten another manager. Bet that Houllier will be the next Rovers boss... :p

Toons are even more f*cked. Souness is one of the worst coaches than went through Benfica and there were many many bad coaches that went through here.

lol exactly, he is like Glenn Hoddle, has way too many personal grudges with players and leaves them on the bench because of it. Souness had massive bust ups with Cole and Yorke and other players said he is a dressing room bully. Hoddle was the same he had a personal problem with Ginola and a few other players, managers like that will always fail because they dont keep things professional. Bad move for Newcastle in my opinion.

The worst coach ever to be connected to Benfica in its history right after Artur Jorge has been appointed as manager of Newcastle.

You couldn't be in worse hands :o

I thought they were getting rid of Sir Bobby to get someone better, not someone worse:kader:

I bet there were like 5 or 6 guys Newcastle wanted more, but they all turned job down. Souness gets in too much fights with own players. Not a good choice

I seriously doubt he can coach winning clubs.

I expect Newcastle to struggle in getting a UEFA cup spot this season.

See you at the Intertoto Cup, Newcastle. :brow:

EDIT: O'Leary would have been perfect for the job, but big-up to him for turning it down. He'll lead Villa to glory. :p

Souness has a managerial track record of achieving next to nothing.

OK, he did alright in hos first job at Rangers, but that's cos he had loads-a-money to spend and there was little competition.

At Liverpool, he took a winning team (admittedly coming towards the end of their peak) and made them into a very mediocre team, which they have never really recovered from.

At Galatasaray, he took the best team in Turkey and failed to win the league.

At Benfica, he sign players like Scott Minto. Enough said.

At Southampton, he kept them up in the Premiership....hardly an outstanding achievement.

At Blackburn, he's spend a lot and achieved nothing (OK, he got promotion back to the EPL, but it's not exactly what Toon are trying to achieve).

I predict he'll not be Toon manager by this time next year.

Bit off topic but, i see you've got Vagner Love as your display name. Is he doing well at CSKA? We dont get much about him here in Brazil. Thanks in advance.:)
