Majestic Salas inspires Chile to 3-0 win over Brazil
SANTIAGO, Aug 15 (Reuters)(DS) - Marcelo Salas inspired Chile
to a 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Brazil on Tuesday,
setting up the first two goals and scoring the third himself on
a night of utter humiliation for the four-times world
champions.
Fabian Estay and Ivan Zamorano gave Chile a two-goal
halftime lead while Salas wrapped up the win in the 73rd minute
before being substituted to a standing ovation.
Brazil, who had only ever lost one World Cup qualifying
match in their history until last month, have now been beaten
in two of their last three. They lost to Paraguay in July but
seemed to have stopped the rot three weeks ago with a 3-1 win
over arch-rivals Argentina.
They dropped to fourth place in the South American World
Cup qualifying group with 11 points from seven games, but could
sink to fifth on Wednesday if Paraguay beat Argentina. Chile
are fifth, with ten points.
Brazil coach Wanderley Luxemburgo has struggled in vain to
find a replacement for striker Ronaldo, who has a long-term
knee injury, and his problem was all too evident on Tuesday.
BRAZIL UNABLE TO CONVERT
Brazil dominated the match for long periods and created a
host of chances but were unable to convert any of them. Chile,
on the other hand, scored from three of the four real chances
they created.
"It was funny game. I think we played better, they had
three chances and scored from all of them. They played on our
mistakes," said full-back Roberto Carlos. "We'll just have to
look ahead and improve."
Chile went ahead after 25 minutes after a moment of
brilliance from Salas, who flicked the ball over his marker,
turned, carried the ball to the edge of the penalty area and
crossed to the far post. The ball found Fabian Estay, who
controlled the ball and scored with a right foot shot.
Salas also provided the second goal one minute before
halftime. He dispossessed Antonio Carlos on the edge of the
penalty area and sent over a low cross to Ivan Zamorano, who
calmly slotted the ball beyond stranded Brazilian goalkeeper
Dida.
Despite playing much of the second half with a nagging
thigh injury, Salas crowned his display in the 73rd minute with
a deserved goal.
SALAS GOAL
Although backpedalling, Salas managed to control a cross
from David Pizarro on his chest at the far post, before firing
the ball into the roof of the net.
Brazil's best spell came early in the second half when they
enjoyed some sustained pressure.
Luizao and Rivaldo both had excellent chances to pull a
goal back but Luizao contrived to miss from in front of the
goal while Rivaldo saw his shot saved when he had only
goalkeeper Nelson Tapia to beat.
Rivaldo missed another gilt-edged chance in the 70th minute
when he dallied over his shot, after wich Salas's third goal
killed off their hopes of a comeback. Substitute Marques summed
up Brazil's evening when he fired over an open goal from 12
metres in the last minute.
Brazil midfielder Emerson Ferreira should have been sent
off at the end for an awful tackle from behind but escaped with
a yellow card. Chile had David Pizarro sent off in the last
minute for slapping Roberto Carlos on the head.

Brazil lost because they didn't WANT to win. Rivaldo woke up this morning, yawned and said,
"Hey, you know what, I feel like losing tonight" http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Just kidding, please don't flame me - I don't really care what happens to Brazil as long as they qualify for WC 2002 (a WC without Brazil wouldn't feel right).

re: Salas I've always been a Salas fan - he is amazing - I have no idea why Lazio want to sell him. (I just hope he doesn't go to Man U http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/eek.gif )

At least it wasnt in Brasil. There could be some public lynchings!!!

Im not worried as you said several key players were missing plus all that matters is Brasil place in the top 5 which I have no doubt they will.

I'm sure they'll still qualify even if it means finishing 5th

Juninio

you always have said that Brazil are the best team in the world because they win all the matches that matter (to you this means the big matches)

But wouldnt the best team in the world be able to beat the smaller teams (no disrepect to Chile) in the world and have enough depth to cover for injuries???

shez

JUNINHIO UR SICK!!!
u say brazil are STILL the best team in the world,b/c ur from brazil even though u maybe don't even live there i guess!!
the best team in the world should be able to have enough good players to cover for 4 or 5 unavailable players, FRANCE HAVE 2 DIFFERENT TEAMS AND BOTH OF THEM CAN KICK BRAZIL'S A$$ JUST LIKE SALAS DID!!
and look at the absent players..VAMPETA?ZEROBERTO? RONALDINHO? since when these players have been THAT important for the brazil First team? or u just look for excuses?
i hate ppl who are soo nationalists that they cant see how much they SUCK!!
THAT WILL BE A LESSON FOR U AND FOR ALL U NATIONALISTS OUT THERE, EVERY DOG HAS HIS DAY!!!
THANX CHILE FOR PROVING THAT POINT!

PS: Romario has to be back and Roberto Carlos is a dirty player..Marques? hehe what a joke!!...Rivaldo is still god!

kewel the jewel:
u are disrespecting Chile, Chile had Italy 2-1 in the last world cup until the ref gave a soft penalty to Italy - and i thought Italy made the final of euro2000.
Chile with Salas and Zamorano firing can beat anybody, they proved it yesterday and at wc98.
Brasil suffered without their key players..but they were nevertheless outscored on the day. I still think Brasil is #1
with Ronaldo, Denilson, Vampeta, ZeRobero, and Ronaldinho in the lineup .. Brasil move up the gears - and no-nation can keep up.

shez: ", FRANCE HAVE 2 DIFFERENT TEAMS AND BOTH OF THEM CAN KICK BRAZIL'S A$$ JUST LIKE SALAS DID!!"

against Holland they had their 2nd team and they dominated and were gonna win...
with brazil at this state i don't see why they can't be beaten by anybody..

Edmundo22:

I give you a standing ovation for taking this loss in a really mature way. Unlike the rest of the fools on this forum that jumped on the bandwagon to rip on Brasil, you accepted the loss well and gave Chile a commendation for their work. Thank you for your patience and strength in character. All good teams lose, and this is only the third qualifier Brasil has lost in their history, so no worries. =)

in that game there was something missing, i didnt see the game and good for chile, but there was something missing in brazils side to lose that bad, i would think regardlerss of missing ronaldo, denilson, ronaldino etc.
i would still see brazil beating chile, no disrespect to chile.

Sigh...

Um guys as I said Brasil deserved to lose this match no excuses.

For those of you asking me directly::

"Why did Brasil lose Juninhio you said their the best etc. etc."

Shouldn't they be able to cover like france did.

Well lets look at facts

For Euro 2000 qualifying France lost to Russia Italy to Belgium Germany to Turkey and so on.

So even the best of teams loses sometimes.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT BRASIL ACTUALLY LOSE GAMES SOMETIMES!!!!! I KNOW I CANT BELIEVE IT EITHER!

Hey Dumbasses:

I know Juninhio can't write very well, but that may not be his fault. What he was trying to say was:

- France lost to Russia
- Germany to Turkey
- Italy to Belgium

Only because you misunderstood his post you guys already started taking blows at him:

"It makes you look like you are full of ****..."

"If someone doesn't slap him I will..."

"What on EARTH are you talking about?"

Damn guys, you should take a lighter approach to things before you start rambling on like that.

Juninho, I apologise.

Teknos, you need to take it easy. You could have made that entire post one simple sentence. And that's all it would have taken to clear up Juninho's point, make your own, and convince us to apologise.

Hey Guys sorry that am a little late on this post, but you must consider that i was celebrating until now.
Well what should i say Chile beated Brazil 3-0.
I know that for many of you this may not be very important as it is for me, the whole world saw Brazil losing on tuesday, well let me tell you something I saw the game twice and what really happened was that Chile won because we score the goals in the right moment, Brazil missed an unbelievable amount of shots, Brazilīs key players played like second class players (DONīT MEAN TO OFFEND ANYONE OF COURSE.
I Donīt wanna sound nationalistic or some crap like that, but the game was historic for us chileans. It was one of those games that you know you are not gonna forget.
Our team played at its best, which is really weird.
I think that Chile is becoming slowly a better team, we have won before to England at Wembley 2-1(i think) and tied with Italy 2-2 (we were winning when the referee miscalled a penalty that costed him his job and that Fifa recognized it as a mistake later) and now we beat a Football Giant like Brazil.
I just wanted to share these thoughts with you
I hope that you post back anything (agree or disagree with me) i will answer you back
Thanks for reading.

I saw this game on replay this Sunday and must say that the press reports did not do justice to how well Chile played, they made it seem like Brasil controlled the whole game and Chile scored on the only 3 chances they had, but it wasn't like that at all! Chile came out storming Brasil and had 3 chances to score in the first 5 minutes, including a cross-bar. Also Brasil had barely any plays close to the Chilean goal for the first 20 minutes.

But the most impressive thing about this game had to be the atmosphere at the stadium, that crowd was wild and loud! When Chile scored it was amazing! the reaction in the stands and the loud noise and the reactions of the players, you could tell that those were the best 90 minutes of their lives.
