Geez this is a hard one! Some hard choices, some controversial choices, but the first three are movies which I grew up loving. Scary Movie, to me, was one of the first big "spoof" movies, and many have since followed. Zoolander, a bit of a wildcard, I saw it the other night and I found it incredibly funny. :rockman: (H)

(not in order)
1. Home Alone
2. Independence Day
3. Jurassic Park
4. Scary Movie
5. Zoolander

My top 5: (although it varies from time to time)

1. The Bounty (Mel Gibson, Anthony Hopkins)
2. Last of the Mohicans (Daniel Day Lewis, historically very inaccurate, but still amazing..)
3. Whale Rider (must see!)
4. In the Name of the Father (Daniel Day Lewis, just awesome)
5. Lost in Translation

Some other favourites of mine (in no particular order):
Platoon, Casualties of War, Donnie Darko, Monster, City of God, The Piano, Traffic, Wall Street, The Red Violin...

Dude, if you like that film you NEED to see the original 1935 Mutiny on the Bounty with Charles Laughton and Clark Gable, it wipes the floor with the Hopkins version and the Brando version, and is one of the most amazing films ever made.

I'm gonna be different and post my top 25, see my film thread for reasons.

01. Kill Bill (Quentin Tarantino)
02. Pulp Fiction (Quentin Tarantino)
03. The Godfather 1 and 2 (Francis Ford Coppola)

I suppose I cant just count two Godfathers, it has to be all or one, and GF3 would pull it down to about #8. I really cant choose between 1 and 2 though, 1 has awesome acting and some wonderful scenes, but 2 has those fantastic flashbacks and a better storyline. I think 2 has to be my favourite by a tiny margin, despite Brando and Caan.

BTW, for anyone who's interested, Mr Simon Clitoris is a character from an extremely funny sketch writting by Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie about spoon bending.

Why does it really matter what I like?

You want a reason, here it is:

I couldn't pick it from the start, good for you, you are smarter than me, I believed it was extremely clever, it was original, creative, unexpected and was at some points scary.

The film is a masterpiece, the colours, everything about it is just fantastic. Look at the way the red is saturated, it's almost like blood, it is freaky.

And the acting is sensational. It is original, creative and touching. The character played by Adrian Bordy (Noah Percy) is exactly how those people act, and I know because my cousin has the same problem, and they cannot talk, they cannot write, they act like children and they want attention, they don't know right from wrong and that is exactly what Adrian Brody does here.

Pheonix and Howard are great, although Pheonix could have done more he still played his part very well. This film has one of the most memorable quotes, listen to when Pheonix and Dallas are speaking on the porch, it is fantastic.

The twist just hits me, it is very original, and you couldn't have picked it from the start, there no evidence of it, it is completely unexpected. You probably say "i figured it out" but really you just took a wild stab and said "yeah, i bet it's in present time, and not set in 1897". You wouldn't have picked the real twist: "the village is an extremely large piece of land privately owned by the Village elder HUNT who purchaes this land with money his father donates. He and other elders meet at a couciling centre, here they feel for each other as each member has lost someone in their lives. After the idea is explained that the members can start their own Village to avoid the harsh reality, HUNT and the other elders move into the Village for a peaceful life, and in an attempt to keep their offspring in, they lie about frightening creatures that reside in the woods, however, the ousiders, unaware of the village mind you, believe that it is a 'wild animal sanctuary', and as HUNTS father is so rich, he has tipped off the government so no aircraft can fly over the Village." If you did pick the twist in exactly those words instead of "i bet it is set in 2004", I would be extremely impressed. But that is the twist, oh yeah, and let's not forget the other so many twists... remember? That the beasts are human... no wait, they are real... oh no, that's just that mentally challanged guy.

The film is very original, and very touching, it is sad, and very clever, for example, the Village is pointless... not the film, the actually Village, just read the newspaper at the end. And how the beasts are the elders, how the Adrian is a beast, how he dies, how he lays there, how he is upset, it's touching, you don't know what to think or how to think for him.

Put yourself in the Village's shoes would you, that's what you are meant to do in situations like this. Watch the film, think about how they would feel with red cloacked beasts roaming through their town, you would absolutly sh!t yourself. And don't say you wouldn't, because right now you have a fear, it may be of say a snake, and what if you grew up and finally realised after about 30 years, that snakes are not real?

After watching it I couldn't stop talking about it for weeks, it was fantastic, and I liked it, a lot of people did not, and I don't care, good for them, and they say "i picked the twist", wow, you're really good, how about you go and enjoy the film instead of trying to work it out, and even if you could how does that make you any better?

I don't care, the film isn't just driven by its ending, it has very many different elements to it that people need to appreciate, but unfortunatly do not. People like you, and many others, just assume it suckes because you don't like the ending or believed it was predictable, where in actual fact it is completely surprising. There is more to a film than just an ending, and I liked this one a lot. Out of all of MNS's films this is the best, followed by The sixth sense, unbreakable and signs.

And for all those who say "it's a load of rubbish, it is so FAKE" then what the hell did you expect? You knew BEFORE you went into the cineama that it would be about Monsters and beasts.... are monsters and beasts real? Hell no, so what makes it any different? That it didn't turn out the way you wanted it? Well hell, if you could make a better film why don't you go and do so, I mean god, this guy got millions for this film, if you could do better, if you could have a better twist then why not write your own "village"?

Enjoy it for what it is, not for what it isn't. But hey, if you don't like it, that's respectable. I just don't like people who don't respect my opinion on a film that I liked a lot because they thought it was crap.

That is my opinion on the film.

nice. I actually bought this Hitchcock's Misteries DVD a few ago with 'The 39 Steps', 'Rich & Strange' and 'Young and Innocent'.

Ive only watched The 39 Steps so far and it was excellent. the chopper scene was laughable but there were close to zero special effects back then so who cares.

I've seen almost every Hitchcock movie - except for the really old ones (The Rope, 39 Steps...) - and yes, Psycho belongs with the best.
I've heard the same comment (The Birds not being that good) enough over the years, but I got my own personal reason to rate it as one of the best I've seen yet. :)

I can through sheer luck. I was in Peterborough and I passed an arthouse cinema, so I stuck my head it to see what was on and it turned out they had broken or lost their main feature, so they just stuck on whatever they had in the old stock rooms, and when I went in the original 39 steps was just starting.

To be honest, it really makes little difference with this particular film, but it was still cool. I do think it is excellent, just above Psycho IMO.

BTW, while on the subject of Hitchcock films, Dial 'M' For Murder was the second film I ever saw (the first being Bambi). I cant remember it though :p

Loads of people say that and the reason is usually something really weird and traumatic like being locked in a room with some birds as a child. It was a very groundbreaking film, but I wouldnt call it as brilliant as some of the others.

I cant believe you think The Shawshank Redemption is over-rated - its the most underrated film of all time! Do you know how much it flopped at the box office when it first came out? It's only now that people are finally starting to appreciate it's brilliance.

The storyline is IDENTICLE to El Mariachi except hes taken out the cool quirky bits, he completely sold out his best friend by casting Banderes instead of him and the attempts at humour jsut suck so much.

New Bond films are pretty gay, they've taken the gadgets and unrealistic elements from being cool to just being stupid. The originals rock though, Goldfinger is an awesome, awesome film. From Russia with Love is damn good too, and Spy who Loved Me. We wont mention Diamonds are Forever :p

TROD. Well, the reason things like Trainspotting, Shawshank Redemption, Mutiry on the Bounty etc arent getting so many votes isnt cos people have bad taste, it's just cos people havent seen them, and the same goes for The Godfather 2 - its damn hard to get hold of outside the trilogy box which is expensive and hardly ever shown on TV - however, I thought that pretty much everyone had seen The Godfather.

plus, lots of people's favorite movies are the ones you watched as a kid, when you werent comparing cinematography, and plot twists, or even if some scenes were ripped off from other movies.

I thought the part in the hotel with the TV in Home Alone 2 was hilarious.

Home Alone aren't bad comedies really, of course no one in their right mind that has a little knowledge about movies would put them as their favourite movies but they are very enjoyable especially if it's the first time you see them. I love Joe Pesci also.

Now... Home Alone 3 that's utter trash.

Yah, when i first saw it, it blew me away. Then for a time, i felt kind of like a sucker, like it was some melodramatic crap, with unrealistic situations (his father driving him to jail) and unrealistic characters (former drug dealer, telemarketer, and schoolteachers as friends) but the best part for me lay in the way certain scenes were set up, or executed, like when he is ranting in the bathroom mirror, or that final reminicense scene or when PS Hoffman is moving through the club (apparrently a spike lee trademark, dragging a character on a dolly like that) and i guess what i liked most wasnt plot related, it was how it was done differently in the visual realm

Sir Calumn
16-03-2005, 11:58:PM
Nah they're nothing like each other - but Barry Lyndon is a really good film. They're both set a round about the Regency period but the things portrayed are totally different. Barry Lyndon is about a poor peasant man who rises up in the world, through luck and his own cunningness, until he is a high player, and it then charters his fall back down again. Ryan O'Niel plays Redmond Barry really well, and the narrator is Sir Michael Hordon who has probably the worlds best theatrical voice, plus there is an awesome cameo from Leonard Russiter, so all in all I definately recommend it. One of my very favourite Kubrick flicks.

As I'm absolutely bored, I'll kill some time by posting my top 10...

My Top Ten:

1. Ring (Nakata Hideo) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0178868/
Legend. First movie ever after which I could proudly say it's a masterpiece. The ending is so sudden and horrifying it gave me countless sleepless nights.

2. Honogurai Mizu No Soko Kara (Nakata Hideo) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0308379/
Might I say that this is the only movie ever to reach a "Ring-like" level of brilliance. The way the story is told: so calm and slow (you'd almost think you're watching a drama) during the first hour, just to explode in that last half hour into the best horror movie ever made by mankind. (would be #1 if I didn't have such great memories and intens emotions of watching "Ring")

3. Koroshiya 1/Ichi the Killer (Miike Takashi) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0296042/
Think away the gore and the grotesk showing of the characters, and you'll end up with an intens story about the complex relationship between Good and Evil. Besides, Kakihara owns all Hollywoodian villains...

4. Battle Royale (***asaku Kinji) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0266308/
This one actually shocked me the first time I saw it: knowing that kids - at the same age as my little brother - had to play this sadistic game... One of the few horror movies that actually make you think after watching it.

5. Ju-On 2 (Shimizu Takashi) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0367913/
Great build up to one of the most freaky scenes in movie history. It also has my fav movie moment ever. Why better than the first (third actually) one: this one has a less complex and better told story.

6. Kairo (Kurosawa Kiyoshi) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286751/
Haven't seen this movie in its entirety yet (had to rent it and just then the DVD player got tired of it) but what I've seen is impressive already. Might buy it one of the next weeks and give it a better rating...

7. Ju-On (Shimizu Takashi) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364385/
Also a legend. If it wasn't for the crappy story-telling it would make the top 5. Every single character in this movie gives you the creeps. Also has the best death-scene ever.

8. Ring 0: Bāsudei (Tsuruta Norio) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0235712/
A mix of Shakespeare and Ring-horror which works magnificently. A peacefull movie that - just like Honogurai - explodes at the end and unleashes horror in splendid amounts. *confession: I'm scared of going to the woods after having seen this movie*

9. A Tale Of Two Sisters (Ji-woon Kim/only non-Japanese movie) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365376/
rented this one and really need to get my hands on it. It's the complexity of the story and the beauty of it that caught my attention. Again a great combination of horror and drama.

10. Kyua/Cure (Kurosawa Kiyoshi) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0123948/
Bought this one yesterday: see it as somesort of Japanese version of Se7en, only better. Just like Battle Royale, it's a movie that requires a second seeing to fully understand the story/message
