The Real deal
An exciting season of European club soccer came to an ending best described as a dud. Valencia resembled a 50-1 shot to win the title as Real Madrid coasted to its eighth European title. In the first-ever final between compatriots, Real Madrid dominated from the outset of the 3-0 rout, and Valencia failed to mount an effective attack. Fernando Morientes opened the scoring in the 39th minute, and Steve McManaman's goal in the 67th minute put the game safely away. The score was the second-most lopsided of Real's record eight final wins, trailing a 7-3 rout of Eintracht Frankfurt 40 years ago.
