LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, BOYS AND GIRLS! LET ME INTRODUCE TO YOU, THE 1999 FIFA WORLD PLAYER OF THE YEAR!! NUMBER 11, FROM THE BEST CLUB IN THE WORLD, FC BARCELONA ..... VITO BARBOSA FERREIRA .... RIVALDO!!!

Here's to him .... may he be blessed with many more!

Screw FIFA, screw the future of this sport. I guess all it takes to win **** like that stupid award is being Brazilian and getting some mega hype by so called experts.

No European team (xpet Man Utd perhaps) had a better winning % than Lazio this year, and look where Sinisa finished.
Alessandro Nesta, without a doubt one of the best defenders of the world and Lazio's captain went blank, just as Totti.
But that lame ass Ronaldo who did play 1 match out of 20 this year actually got some votes.

What's the point of such awards if they don't have nothing to do with reality. Beckham won more awards this year than Rivaldo in his life (...) and still finished second. Shevchenko scored more goals than anyone else and carried Dynamo to the semis, but had the fault of being...Ucrainian.

Eddie Davids got 1 less vote than Ronaldo - any questions????

Yeah i would have given it to Davids Before Rivaldo. But Beckham has been shortchanged like so many EPL players in recent years.

BECKHAM FIFA PLAYER OF THE YEAR...my opinion!

Idea: The players should vote, Fifa know fack all.

that's actually a good idea. they had this done in the serie A last year and the first ranks were really taken by players who deserved it.

E tudo um bando de mela cuecas invejosos.

What should I take into count, your guys opinon about the best player being BECK **** or the opinion of 150+ coaches around the world that think RIVALDO is the best? I dont think I need to answer that one.

I bet that even the MANU coach voted for Rivaldo

My favorite team is Argentina, so I never favor Brazilians, but I still feel that Rivaldo was the right recipient of the award. He was second in scoring in La Liga, he had numerous assists, he won a double with Barcelona, and a Copa America with Brazil. Manchester United may have had the best team in 1999, but I believe that Rivaldo was the best player. Shevchenko will get his chance next year and so will Beckham, but unfortunatley Sinisa will probably never get a chance.

Damn can you be more of a sore loser? So maybe it was close between Rivaldo and Beckham, but to say people like Totti or Mihailovic Davids were better you must be crazy. Schevchenko should have been given major consideration but then again his team failed to get to the CL final, and crashed out of Euro 2000 vs Slovenia.

Beckham could have possiby won if he played some good games in the fall, like Rivaldo vs Fiorentina, which was a game seen all over the world, that sorts of stuff leaves an impression. When you cant score in 13 consecutive games or whatever it was people take note.

And yes I think they way they vote now by giving the votes to national team coaches is a good system, even though some of these coaches might have no idea as to what is going on, and be biased, still it would not be large enough percentage to swing the vote to a wrong choice.

by the way the award Rivaldo got today is the Golden Ball for best footballer playing in Europe. This award is voted for by editors of leading sports magazines from each UEFA member nation which are associated with French magazine France Football.

The FIFA player of the year is voted by national team coaches but I think the results are announced at a reception sometime in January.

I'd also pick Rivaldo Top 5, but simply not 1st. And I did not say that Totti should have won, he should simply have received ! (ONE) vote, wheras Ronaldo got 2. Same goes for Eddie, he got only 1 vote. And what about Thuram? OF course, Matthäus is MUCH better than Thuram....? Be real.

rivaldo deserved it...he played the most consistent inspirational futebol in 99...how bout in last years CL wen in the camp nou 3-3 ...shmiecal left wif a stoopid look on his face after that sublime free-kick...then he fired up to challenge the man u goal from any position....hitting the bar in the las minutes from a bull**** ferocious drive from way out !! - which woulda seen man u out!!!

rivaldo was the player of 99 playing on another planet - thanks RIVALDO for the inpiration!!!

hehe .... MY BAD PEOPLE!! I got ahead of myself .... Rivaldo won the Golden Ball ... For best European Player ... (I hope that freaks out ou Beckham fans even more cuz Rivaldo aint even European!!) .. Now ... on to you repsonses:

For Nesta ... he should have gotten more votes, he did a lot of good thnigs for Lazio, and I love Davids, they should have gotten more votes than Ronaldo.

Besides cross the ball in and free kicks .. which he does with much success ... what else has Beckham done? What leadership role has he played on ManU? Has he ever headed the ball into the net?? You ever see him play one-two with Yorke and Cole? When Barca played ManU in the ECC, who had a better two games?? ManU didnt even beat Barca (that was without Kluivert, the DeBoer twins, Dani, Litmanen, Xavi) Rivaldo TOTALLY outplayed him. He almost won the game in Old Trafford when he struck the post TWICE! SO MUCH FOR MANU'S TREBLE! THEY DIDNT EVEN BEAT THE BEST TEAM IN EUROPE! Schmeical looked at Rivaldo and almost cried when he took the shot. WHERE WAS BECKHAM??? WHAT DID HE DO?? Besides that game vs Inter ... when has he ever produced that CONSISTENTLY?? FOR ManU?? FOR ENGLAND??? RIVALDO DOES IS EVERYGAME. FOR BARCA, BRAZIL .. IT DOESNT MATTER. He plays the same flank as Beckham AND HE STILL DOES BETTER!! WHETHER HE SCORES OR SETS UP A GOAL OR PLAYS DEFENSE!(when does Beckham play defense??) HE WAS THE MOST CONSISTENT PLAYER IN EUROPE AND THE WORLD! THAT IS WHY HE WON! HE IS THE BEST! THE ONLY REASON WHY BECKHAM FINSISHED SECOND IS BECAUSE SO MANY GOOD PLAYERS HAVE HAD BAD A YEAR!
Totti is a good player, but he complains too much! You ever seen one of his games? He whines and complains about the officiating in almost everygame. GET OVER IT! SHUT UP AND PLAY! HE WASNT NEARLY AS CONSISTENT AS RIVALDO!

SO FOR ALL OF YOU WHO THINK ANYONE BUT RIVALDO SHOULD HAVE WON IT .... YOU R CRAZY! NO ONE ... NOT VIERI, TOTTI, BECKHAM, SHEVCHENKO ... NO ONE WAS AS CONSISTENT AND DEADLY AS HE WAS. NO ONE! HE IS THE BEST. END STORY.
