The second German-Italian matchup tonight.

You never know what to expect from Bayer. They can beat any side on a good day but they are very inconsistent.

2-1 for Bayer Franca and Berbatov

Two red cards for Roma, lol. :D

Krzynowek is really on fire. Important win for Bayer.

Champions' League Group B, Matchday 3 - 19/10/04

Bayer Leverkusen 3 - 1 Roma
Totti 26 (R), Roque Junior 49 (B), Krzynowek 59 (B)
BayArena

Once again the Giallorossi threw away a half-time lead and saw two men sent off as they lose at Bayer Leverkusen.

Gigi Del Neri made his Champions' League debut and was immediately faced with the difficult task of getting Roma through this first round. Without a single point from their first two games, despite taking a 2-0 lead away to Real Madrid only to collapse 4-2, things were looking bleak for the Giallorossi.

Del Neri fielded the trident attack of Vincenzo Montella, Francesco Totti and Antonio Cassano, but was forced to do without the injured Traianos Dellas and Ivan Pelizzoli, as well as the suspended Philippe Mexes.

Bayer Leverkusen were immediately more aggressive and went close after five minutes when a Jacek Krzynowek free kick found Roque Junior only for the former Milan defenders' diving header to whistle past the post.

Dimitar Berbatov was rather more accurate and soon after his header rattled the crossbar with Carlo Zotti beaten. The Germans were piling on the pressure early on with Jermaine Jones and Krzynowek wasting good chances.

However, it was Roma who took a shock lead against the run of play after 26 minutes. Francesco Totti curled in a trademark free kick, although this time it was with the aid of a deflection off Jones.

Moments later Montella fell in the area under pressure from two defenders, but the referee waved away penalty appeals. Cassano then combined with Simone Perrotta and the midfielder's wayward angled drive nearly reached his teammate for a tap-in.

Bayer went close one minute later with Bernd Schneider's header skimming the woodwork. It was a tense game with four yellow cards in the first half and Leverkusen's stars were clearly irritated with the scoreline after all their hard work and 67 per cent posession.

The home side made a substitution at half-time to get back into the game, introducing Brazilian striker Franca for midfielder Carsten Ramelow. It worked, as within minutes of the restart they drew level with Roque Junior's glancing header on a Ponte free kick.

As if to shore up the midfield, Del Neri immediately replaced Montella with Under-21 international Alberto Aquilani. It didn't work, as soon after Bayer Leverkusen turned the game around completely with Krzynowek's half-volley from the edge of the box.

There was controversy moments later when Leandro Cufre' toe-poked the ball past Jorg Butt, but it was disallowed for a dubious offside flag. Replays show that Schneider was keeping the fullback onside and the goal should have stood.

The Giallorossi were furious and Christian Panucci let the incident get to him, as one minute later he was sent off for using his elbow on Krzynowek. Roma's problems this season have been a lack of discipline and the inability to hang on to leads, but evidently Del Neri's work has still not solved either of them.

Zotti rushed off his line to clear from Berbatov, then Del Neri completely changed his tactics by throwing on tall centre-forward Mido for midfielder Perrotta.

But Leverkusen were in control and Gigi Sartor required a goalline clearance to prevent Franca from making it 3-1, while Zotti performed desperate saves on Freier and Krzynowek.

Yet Roma nearly repeated their first half trick of scoring against the run of play with a Totti set-piece, although this time his free kick only cannoned off the crossbar.

Tension continued to run high and Daniele De Rossi saw red moments later, for another late foul on Krzynowek, to leave them in nine men.

The third goal finally arrived in stoppages, as three passes were completed inside the Roma area for Franca to roll home from close range.

Bayer Leverkusen: Butt; Roque Junior, Juan, Nowotny, Placente; Schneider, Krzynowek, Ramelow (Franca 46), Ponte (Balitsch 92); Berbatov, Jones (Freier 67)

Roma: Zotti; Panucci, Scurto, Ferrari, Cufrč; Mancini (Sartor 68), De Rossi, Perrotta (Mido 73); Totti; Montella (Aquilani 50), Cassano

Ref: Poulat (Fra)

Sent off: Panucci 61 (R), De Rossi 87 (R)

3 euro losses in a row, what a disgrace...
Juve, on the other hand, 3 wins. :D

:mrpimp:

Roma's hit the bottom. Totti should move on to another club. They make him look bad over there. ;)

What the hell is wrong with Roma? Sure I know there are a lot of injuries but even so, you can't blame 2 reds on injuries and also another poor display as well.

Things are definately looking bleak for Roma. After such a great season last year its sorta looking like this year will be a repeat of the season they had 2 years ago.
