all these people hate united because the team they support generally are not as
succesful
as the boys in red. So what do you do if your team does not have a becks, keane,

Thats bollocks, quite frankly Mr Cantona. When Liverpool were managed to four European Cups and umpteen top-flight titles, were they as universally hated as Manchester United are now? Goodison may have growled their disapproval, and the real fans from Moss Side may have given them some stick, but their success spurred many sides on to try and acheive more (witness the way that, once Liverpool had shown that you could conquer Europe several times, other sides went on to do it eg. Aston Villa, Everton). Were they hated for their success? Nope.

Are the current Manchester United side hated for their success? Nope, they aren't either. The thing that gets me more than anything else is the attitude of their 'fans'. In my experience, the majority of 'supporters' of Manchester United are people who don't give a damn about anything except the big games, the glory. People who you didn't even know liked football suddenly start to discuss their match in the pub, not knowing anything about the club or caring. They are riding on their success. Example - An acquaintance of mine started this sort of routine after the Euro final, and bought the whole replica shirt now-I'm-a-supporter thing. After the Charity Shield, when Arsenal won 2-1, I ran into him wearing his shirt and gave him a bit of banter about the match. He quite plainly didn't know what the hell I was talking about. Its this sort of thing that annoys me.
The selective memory of Manchester United's fans who cannot remember any moment before winning the Premiership in 1993 just bugs me, and the fact that, once the team wins something, you will never, ever hear the end of it. So, using the old adage 'If you can't beat 'em, join 'em', here goes...

Did Manchester United win the Conference in 1999? Eh?
Did they take home the FA Trophy in 1998?
Did they win the Southern League Merit Cup in 1985? Thought not. So who is obviously the best?

Daniel, you say you started following them a few years ago when they were in strife and near relegation ? You're talking a minimum of a decade here, when they were placed 13th in the then div 1. The year before was 11th and then it was 2nd the year before. And if you think that is in strife and near relegation please speak to someone who supports man city, who slumped to div 2.

Leeds already have been as good - the 70s team would walk all over Man Utd as they did every team in those days. Also, who's top of the prem? not for long perhaps, but it shows that we're challenging.

And with the Man city reference I was trying to point out that when a man utd supporter talks about near relegation and in strife the worst they were off was ending 13th in the past 12 odd years. On the other side of the coin we have Man city, relegated to div 2 but fighting back, their supporters now both sides of that coin, success and failure.
The problem I have with you, Cantona and the other 'man utd is the best' people, and add to that the 'South american players are the best' supporters, is that it doesn't seem like you love or even like football, you love man utd, a blinding love that sees nothing else. I love football, I love my club, but even if they win 10 successive trebles or whatever I'll always be slightly critical of them, noticing their good points but also the bad ones.
