View Full Version : Why Arsenal WONT win the Champions League...yet

Golden Arrows

No ways !!! :kader:

Im convinced now that their not going to smell that
Championsleague trophy within the next 3years minimum!!!

Theirs a problem!!!

Iv lookd at it this way, their apporach to the CL matches is
a bit too niave...

In the Premiership; they can get away with with their style of
play, that quick 1-2's in the penalty area, fast movement, pushing up etc...

But in the CL, they come up against teams that are more robust in their
approach ( eg:Pana kept things tight in the penaty area, with lots of defenders
intercepting passes...not allowing them space)

Their needs to be another approach...

They lack a PLAN B & C. I knew that Man U would beat them two weeks ago, because when
it matters, MU have that slight winning edge... after all people forget that ManU
and Chelsea did beat Arsenal last season( albiet in Cup competitions)

Arsenal have got to develop another way of playing, whether its quick counterattack, normal
possesion football,swinging crosses in the 18 area...etc

Also another problem... which I feel ppl havent noticed is that; as great as Henry is..

Arsenal tend to rely too much on him, infact one can say the whole attack is
centred around him. They were realy lucky that he wasnt injured last year
cos the majic comes from him. Whhat would happen if say He was OUT 4 6months?
Who's good enough to take his place

Bergkamp and Iv said this a long time ago, Is a liablity( exp in CL)
He wont fly to the away legs, and he's pushing 35 now... Wiltord who I thoght would
have been a more usefull player(or have been used better) is gone... Kanu ws no real
loss so...But Arsenal need another Good striker. Someone who's just gonna bang goals
in.I know Reyes is a striker or something, but isnt he being used as an attacking
midfielder...

Oh and another thing... I know Wenger is reknown for hisBrilliant bargain buys
on the tranfer. But I mean come on... JENS LEHMAN= CARTHORSE!! Iv always known he ws
supsect ever since he startd playing 4 Arsenal... get someone else FAST!!!

That is all for now ... :mrpimp:

What do yall think...

Yep you are right , I also think that they won't win this year, Manchester United will come back like they did before to win the Cup.

They arent gonna win it because PSV and Panathinaikos will knock Arsenal out :jap:

yeah..... arsenals style is extremely effective in the premier league where henry and co can get behind high defences after a few passes...... but it is much more difficult in europe, deeper more organised defenses and slower tempos make it hard for arsenal :S

It's a good point you made about plan B and C. On the other hand it's not as easy to work as a team if you don't have a certain style of play.

The number of strikers doesn't seem that big now that Reyes is playing on the wing quite often and van Persie is not getting much playing time, but I'm not sure we need another striker yet with Bergkamp still playing.

The midfield is the problem for United. As for Arsenal, teams in the Premiership allows them to dictate the pace of the game and virtually just look to defend and hope to catch them on the break. In Europe the teams play alot more tighter to them, not allowing them the space they crave. Henry likes to work his magic by drifting inside from the left wing, something which teams in the Champions Leauge, Manchester United and to a lesser extent Chelsea don't allow him to do.

Arsene needs to develop some new tactics for his Champions League games, or they wont reach anywhere, not that I want them to, mind.;)

They're just Premiership bullies that's all, but they only bully who they can in the Premiership anyway.(H)

We need a player like Makelele...Someone who dedicates games to just stealing and stopping the opposing teams attack....

Edu and Fabregas are great players BUT defensively they are very poor....

Gilberto is injured and it is showing in big games where we have only been able to draw...

LOL hey yo some of my fellow Gunners hating on Gilbert.................

na i cant see arsenal winning the cl till 2 more seasons.
They can't play a defensive game thats it.attack suits them best.

Anyways, arsenal should have depth in their squad if they wanna compete in cl.They should have a big enough squad like man utd's

Man Utd have a good chance of winning this year if ruud continues like this and we have Carroll at the back:p

Man Utd have no depth what so ever. If any midfielder gets injured you're completely screwed.

no depth? ok, lets assume that giggs, scholes, keane, ronaldo are our first choice midfielder. assume they all out as well, we still have fortune, kleberson, p.neville, miller. we still have richardson, fletcher, djemba-djemba, eagles for sub. we even have bellion, rooney, smith able to play in midfielder or forward role. no depth???

this apply to arsenal. if henry, viera, cambelle out, you're screwed

Man Utd are always expected to do well in the Champions League no matter how they are doing domestically. It's not that long ago when they won the competition in which they are a fixture and have lots of experience.

Even if you don't count those, then we still have Smith, Rooney and Saha (he played winger couple of times), while who does Arsenal have of such quality to substitute Pires, Vieira, Ljungberg and Edu?

Arsenal are one of the best teams in the world for counterattacking. They can break very fast. Their who strategy is based on breaking forward which while it is fun to watch, is a very one track idea. Possession might be a good idea. And finally, they don't have any brilliant headers of the ball except Campbell and he is meant to stay back.

Yes he's a knob but fortunately he can't cock up their play on the main field. Cygan does that.

Unless you mean they rarely get to counter attack because he never saves any? :p

Bahahahaahahah!!! :D :D :D

If greek teams played boring football as u said... then man utd would never have given panathinaikos the thrashing they did in past seasons of cl...

arsenal are just lame.... they can only perform in the premiership and thats all... and arsene wenger... he's no tactical genius... he can only play one style and thats all... IMO only man utd and chelsea can go furthest in c.l, liverpool might have to wait another season(cisse = big loss) and sayin that champions league will be won once again by a italian or spanish team

Well, Gary Neville is hardly a top class right back. And they haven't really replaced Denis Irwin at left-back.

Ferdinand is a good penalty box defender but can be static against swift inside forwards. And sorry but i'm not a fan of either Brown, Silvestre or Heinze.

Throwing 11 men behind the ball is boring. That's the greek strategy. But if it works, hey. Who are we to complain?

well it started as 5.... ended up with 7 :p :p :p

its a german tactic actually... used by greeks.. but then again... chelsea n jose mourinho use it..

i think arsenal need a change of personnel to succeed in europe.. maybe an italian coach like capello or the like.. someone who has european finals experience...

Arsenal never really bring it on the European level. That's why they won't win.

And did I say Henry? He may be a god in the EPL but when it comes to Europe he's little more than a clown at times.

If he can step it up then perhaps then he can be proclaimed, the best player on the planet (and thats only if he does well with the NT as well...)

Bobby
05-11-2004, 05:54:AM
About his NT proformances.

Did you guys ever stop to think, maybe he doesn't want to play for France but doesn't want to come off as an ass by retiring in his prime?

You know, some people, including myself, hate international football.

It doesn't matter, he needs to start playing in europe or his poor Juventus form will not be called as accidental.

adnan2850
05-11-2004, 09:16:AM
europe doesnt mean international

CL is also considered europe

and arsenal havent performed to the level at whcih they are known to perform in the EPL

siddharth
05-11-2004, 07:26:PM
All this frustration is down to our inability to perform well in Europe and against big teams. I believe that if the team doesn't perform it's the manager's fault. As much as i respect wenger for what he has done for us i'm also disappointed that we haven't taken our european game to any higher level under wenger. It seems Wenger is too adamant on winning the CL with his one dimensional play.

Wenger just doesn't want to learn from his mistakes. Tell me an instance when wenger has made changes to the team at half time when the team isn't playing well in europe or the EPL. All of his substitutions come after 75 mins!!! and 99% of them when the opponents have equalised or when we are chasing the game. I am utterly disappointed by the fact that we have gone downhill under wenger when it comes to corners and set pieces. It's just a formality for the opponents when we take corners and set pieces. Reyes used to take excellent corners and freekicks for seville but his corners and freekicks have become worse since joining Arsenal and do i need to talk about our defending from set pieces.?

Bergkamp is the best thing to have happened to Arsenal but wenger needs to use him sparingly considering his age. Pennant was getting some playing time in the start of the season but he has disappeared since. I'm absolutely dismayed to see Henry playing for the whole game when he has been poor and watching Van Persie sit on the bench annoys me even more. When we are not allowed to play our usual game in Europe we are as confused as a Baby in a Topless Bar.!!!!!! Also i think the reason we reached the quarters of the CL last season was due to the change in the CL Format.I don't think we would have progressed had the previous format stayed.

To put it in simple words.....

Wenger = No Tactics
Wenger = No CL
