Italian football authorities have suspended Reggina captain Mozart after he tested positive for a banned substance.
According to the Italian Olympic Committee, the Brazilian midfielder tested positive for Betamethasone following the club's Serie A clash with Milan last month.
Mozart has been suspended with immediate effect - pending a disciplinary committee hearing - and the suspension comes before Reggina host Serie A leaders Juventus at the Oreste Granillo.
Reggina have responded to the news by stating that the midfielder's positive test was for his use of an insect-bite cream he had applied to his three-year-old daughter, as Betamethasone is found in a number of products for skin treatment.
"Reggina underline that their captain (Mozart), for which has been found the presence of Betametasone, is not directly responsible," read a statement on Reggina's official website.
"The club consider the decision to stop him playing as absolutely grave because this penalizes a player, who has always been absolutely professional.
"The reason is due to the use of a cream against insect punctures he used for his three-year-old daughter."
Mozart's positive test was followed by the news that five Serie B players also tested positive for banned substances.
Vicenza's Julien Rantier, Arezzo's Daniele Amerini, Cesena's Lorenzo Rossetti, Crotone's Daniele Vantaggiato and Catanzaro's Tommaso Dei were suspended for similar offences on Friday.

Chelives 06-11-2004, 10:21:PM I personally think its fair....
The guy admitted straight away that he took drugs, one that isn't performance enhancing, infact performance hampering. He immediatly booked himself into rehab, and has promised to come clean.
And before glory hunters start comparing, Rio missed a test which in acordance to the FIFA rule book, carries the same punishment as testing positive for a performing enhancing banned substance.
I think Chelsea also came out of this quite badly. Mutu is a young foreign guy, on mega wages by himself in a strange country, and having personal family problems. Most companies would help the guy out, help him sort his life out and give him his job back, but Chelsea jsut sack him, and then have the cheek to want compensation. Tight fisted caaaaaaaaaaannntttttsssss!

enigma 06-11-2004, 10:33:PM I was watching a football program today and Richard Keyes brought up quite a good point, he said the ban was very, very fair because if the ban was longer than what Rio got, players who take drugs are going to think "Oh let's just skip the drugs test and get away with a 1 or 2 month shorter ban." so yeah. It's quite a fair ban.
I didn't read any of the posts so don't shoot me if this point has been raised already.
Vedran-10 06-11-2004, 10:42:PM He's a football player.And he used cocaine.
Should be banned for life.
Chelives 06-11-2004, 10:56:PM Banned for Life!?

Vedran-10 06-11-2004, 10:59:PM Yes.I hate it when a football player uses drugs.Be a sportsman or don't be.
AberdeenFC 06-11-2004, 11:09:PM very harsh, think about it jonothan woodgate battered a paki but didnt get a ban for it in football. mutu was harming only himself but get a 7 month ban its a load of shíte
pede54 06-11-2004, 11:34:PM Leniant........sod his personal problems....he created his personal problems by not being able to keep his dick in his pants, time and time again. At the same time he is turning out for the team, and getting thousands a week for it, knowing he is coked out of his head and that shows he does not give a damn about himself or Chelsea.Constantly misses training.Has been warned many times in the past(even by Ranieri) that Chelsea are aware of the rumours and will be watching him.The guy is an idiot. Now i gotta explain to my little daughter why Mutu was sacked.Like it or not ,these people have a responsibility to set a good example to young people who idolise them. This was not a side effect of a cold remedy. This was deliberate cocaine abuse.Ban the drug taking scumbag for at least 2 years .One big point.....he only came clean and accepted rehab, once he had been caught out, otherwise he would still be doing it now.Why should i pay hard earned money to watch my team, just to subsidise someones drug habit.Bollocks to him and all drugtakers in sport.

Please dont reply to this :)

Spurs4Life 10-11-2004, 11:48:PM Rio took a drugs test the 24 hours after he missed the drugs test he was supposed to take and he was found clean.
