View Full Version : Xavi - Best Midfielder In Europe?
Mehta 007 09-11-2004, 04:11:PM The Barcelona midfielder Xavi has to be the best midfielder in Europe at the moment.
I have seen Barcelona play many times this season, his passing is brilliant, he hardly ever gives the ball away, scores goals, sets up goals, can tackle, what a player!
Anyone agree/disagree?
Virgo 09-11-2004, 04:12:PM the whole Barça midfield is awesome atm.
Too harsh to say he's the best midfielder in europe. I'd say he's one of the best passers in europe.
italianstyle87 09-11-2004, 04:15:PM lampard and nedved are better
and there are probably more
Aus_Gate_13 09-11-2004, 04:22:PM he's definately a top class player but to call him best midfielder in europe is a big big call...
Fernandez 09-11-2004, 04:22:PM Xavi is one of most unsung heroes in the Barcelona squad. He is also one of the most underrated players today.

Exactly what i was about to post.
He's great.
Is he a starter for Spain when fit?? Or just in the mix?
VanTheMan 09-11-2004, 07:32:PM thats stupid to call him the best midfielder.
there are loads of players ahead of him.
Nedved,Zidane,Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Robben,Deco,etc etc etc.
the list goes on and on.
0le_Spain 09-11-2004, 07:37:PM I'm a Barça fan of course so i might be a bit bias but Xavi right now is one of the best in-form players in Europe. He's the only Barça player to have played all minutes, and that tells you something about his importance to the team. He sets the pace in the midfield and has awesome vision and passing skills and players like Deco, Eto'o and Ronaldinho have publicly said they think he's one of the best in europe.
And yes just recently he broke into the starting XI of the Spanish NT. Had played before but very sparingly since the older managers prefered the defensive Albelda-Baraja combination . He went to Euro 2004 but Saez didnt play him a single minute!!!.
Also look out for the youngster Iniesta, he's only 20 but he is class, similar to Xavi, and starts ahead of Cesc in the spanish U-21's.:rockman:

i agree with some of the players there but i assure you none has played better than him this season, including Ronaldinho and Deco but overall yeah your're right.
Vinnie Jones 09-11-2004, 08:46:PM If we judge the best by current form then Xavi is clearly the best.
Mayor 09-11-2004, 08:52:PM actual ranking of offensive midfielders in Europe:
1. Ronaldinho (no doubts) :mrpimp:
2. Xavi/Nedved
3. Totti (even if he's twat, he's good footballer)
4. Figo (now better than Zizou the GrandPa, he's like wine, older and better)
5. Vicente
6. Krzynówek (regular assists and important goals in league and CL against big teams :hump:
7. Zidane (his time slowly finishes, but class is class) :borat:
...
...
Mauro Cantoro (H)
...
Lampart
C.Ronaldo...maybe :lui:
...
Haukur Gudnason 09-11-2004, 09:01:PM ahem..Xabi Alonso and Stevie Gerrard
Guillaume 09-11-2004, 09:09:PM He plays better and better this season. Barcelona can't play without him, he's simply class.
But I think that Lampard, Gerrard or Ballack are better at present.
bertrandcantat 09-11-2004, 09:40:PM No, Xavi isn't the best midfielders in Europe but it's really a good player who play better and better.
Moreover, he plays with player "magic" as Rohni, Deco, Eto'o ... it's more easy for a player as Xavi for show your "génius"
this player is to be supervised ;)
enigma 09-11-2004, 09:42:PM Xabi Alonso, IMO, is one of the best passers I've seen. What a great passer..
Oh if we're going to base this on passing skills then Cesc has a shout in it too. Top class passing from our little spaniard. :D
manutd4eva 09-11-2004, 09:51:PM He's an excellent player no doubt, probably one of the top 5 most underated players in Europe.

I wouldn't say he's the best midfielder in Europe but I doubt there's a midfielder who is playing better right now. He's been our best player this season so far, I have no doubt.
ronnifan9 09-11-2004, 10:48:PM BEST MIDFIELDER???....wait up, now i know you're a barca fan but dont get so ahead of yourself. As soon as i saw this thread, i thouhgt of 10 other BETTER midfielders than xavi: zizu, figo, gerrard, viera,...Ect. On the other hand, the other xabi alonso would be just ahead of him!!! Dont get me wrong just cause he plays for barca i'm not going to diss on him, he very good.(period) but you guys do have the best midfielder in all the world(ronaldinho):mrpimp:

Wait up, now I now you're a Brazil fan but don't get so ahead of yourself. ;)
John_Arne_Riise 09-11-2004, 11:57:PM Surely Steven Gerrard is better. :p
ronnifan9 10-11-2004, 12:25:AM What??? well, gerard is top ten for sure...but i'm not necessarily a brazilian...1st root for my home country mexico 2nd the argentine team and 3rd for brazil with spain right behind him...i gotta support my latin americans
enigma 10-11-2004, 12:41:AM I didn't say you were a Brazilian. :p
ronnifan9 10-11-2004, 01:31:AM well i mean to say i wasnt necessarily a brazilian "fan"...oh well
HALA MADRID!!! (o como se dice en mi querido mexico, arriba el madrid cabron*es)
Vedran-10 10-11-2004, 01:57:AM I have never seen a player in such a good run as Xavi is having at the moment. He is unbelieveable.
The best Barcelona player this season. If he continues like this, in two or three years he will be the best midfielder in Europe.
manutd12 10-11-2004, 02:36:AM Cristiano ronaldo would be the best attacking midfielder :)
ronnifan9 10-11-2004, 02:40:AM Originally posted by manutd12

...hmm...not really, only if ronaldinho, kaka, aimar retire...but as long as these guys play....theyre head and shoulders above c. ronaldo...<---very good player, but not YET great
Zlatan 10-11-2004, 02:42:AM Xavi is not at all the best midfielder. Think of Zidane, Vieira, Gerrard, Deco and so many more.

EXACTLY!!!!
manutd12 10-11-2004, 02:56:AM zidane's days are nearly over, have you seen his performances in the last madrid matches, he doesn't control the ball at all, he fails to receive it like he used to do, just like ryan giggs.. :(
henry#14 10-11-2004, 03:28:AM Originally posted by Dream Team
I doubt there's a midfielder who is playing better right now.
Pavel Nedved
ronnifan9 10-11-2004, 04:07:AM yeah, you can say zidanes game is declining, i wonder who florentino will buy (ronaldinho;) , aimar, gerrad(most probably) or bring up one of the MANY young stars that Real Madrid B has (la cantera) like javi garcia, jotha or bring up our young striker SOLDANO:rockman: ....probably not:rofl: ...he doesnt know they even exist...

The original poster was comenting on who he thinks is the best player right NOW, and not based on reputation.
Zidane has not been in form for over two years now, while many Arsenal fans can attest that the same could be said of Vieira.
Gerrard has been great no doubt, but has only played a few games this year.
Deco was great last season but has been nowhere near Xavi's level this season, especially considering they play on the same team now.
And someone else mentioned Ballack? You're kidding? Most bayern fans want to sell him...
Ronaldinho has been average this season, and he'd even admit that Xavi has been Barca's best player..
Xabi Alonso has been hot/cold, following up great performances with poor ones.
The only other midfield close to Xavi's play this season is Nedved, just because he's scored so many damn goals this season.
I say to try and find a vid of the Milan-Barca game at the Nou Camp. Xavi was phenomenal, outclassing all of Miilan's midfield himself...
ronnifan9 10-11-2004, 04:20:AM .........i still think kaka, gerrard, ronaldinho, aimar...are still better now or in the future.......wont change my opinion:p .....lets put it this way: would you trade kaka, gerrard, ronaldinho, or aimar for XAVI........answer---> HELL NO!!!!
Atlas 10-11-2004, 04:42:AM Xavi is with out a doubt one of the best in the world in his position and he is very underated he and Xabi Alonso should be Spain central midfielders and Spain would have two of the best passers in the world
henry#14 10-11-2004, 04:44:AM Originally posted by Atlas

for sure. that's mind-boggling just to think about:o
SB9Dragon 10-11-2004, 04:48:AM Just imagine Xavi, Xabi Alonso, Baraja, and Vicente all in the same midfield. Wow :o
Though how would it work out?
Maybe a 4-3-1-2 would be the best formation for Spain.
Virgo 10-11-2004, 04:52:AM Deco is playing as a holding midfielder and he's doing an amazing job.
His natural position is attacking midfield/playmaker that's why he shone more last season.
Xavi is playing in his natural position.
Anyways if we're talking center midfield he might hold a candle but when considering wingers like Cristiano, Robben or Vicente he isn't really even close to the level of threat that these guys provide.

who'd play in that hole behind the strikers?
Missilez 10-11-2004, 05:06:AM I'm just glad Gerrard hasn't played much in a way. If he was playing as the best player in the world, it would be much more likely that he would leave to Real or something.
0le_Spain 10-11-2004, 05:13:AM Aragones should try this.
---------------Albelda----------------
------Xavi---------------X. Alonso---
L.Garcia----------------------------Vicente
----------------Morientes-------------------
Other options:
Raul
Torres
Reyes
Baraja
Joaquin
Yeste
Luque
Victor
Valeron....

A winger is a quite different kind of player. Comparing Xavi with Vicente makes no sense.
Atlas 10-11-2004, 05:45:AM another good thing from Xavi is that he can defend well and attack at the same time unlike Vicente who can only attack but it stupid to compare to diferent players from diferent positions
Dreath 10-11-2004, 05:53:AM Pennant and Quincy>>>> Xavi....
Only kidding. I have'nt seen enough of Xavi to comment.
hanek45 10-11-2004, 09:10:AM Xavi is ******* awesome.
He is SOOO underated.
well, not underated, but what I mean is that he deserves soo ******* much.
atm, hes playing even better than Ronaldinho..
He has got to be one of the 5 best midfielders in Spain (Y)(Y)(Y)
DEFENETELY
Filipower 11-11-2004, 12:49:AM in the kind of position xavi plays in.......maniche is the best 'midfielder' then...nice thread though
