23 November 2004
20:45 (CET) Old Trafford - Manchester
**********
Should be a great game. Last time the two met it was those two goals by Ruud that salvaged a point for United. Hopefully at OT we can settle the score and secure top spot in our group, and qualification to the next round!
My prediction is 3-1 to United, Giggs, Rooney and Smith with the goals :mrpimp:
henry#14 21-11-2004, 03:17:PM 1-1. Wiltord to be involved somehow in the goal. Ruud to poach one.

Wiltord is injured. ;)
shokz 21-11-2004, 04:06:PM European Cup game at Old Trafford = Goals. Ruud van Nistelrooij to get a hatrick and put pressure on Raul and I can't see us losing at Old Trafford unless Ferdinand were to pick up an injury. Gary Neville, Gabi Heinze and Cristiano Ronaldo were all rested at the weekend.
Lets hope Sir Alex Ferguson's 1000th match as manager of Manchester United FC is a special one.

manutd4eva 22-11-2004, 10:11:PM In the last two games this is the new formation we've been using. It's very confusing for opposition sides, with players moving all over the place.

Ronaldo/Rooney-----Rooney/Giggs
-----------------Ruud----------------
Hope to see it used on Tuesday again.(H)
Lyon would probably get run over.(H)
i think this formation is suit fletcher and scholes. both playing well this few games. certainly we need fletcher to have more experience. and a poor mistake he always did. losing ball at center. he should work harder on it. may be he can learn a lots from scholes ;)
manutd4eva 22-11-2004, 10:36:PM Man United v Lyon
Striker Louis Saha is Manchester United's only injury ahead of their Champions League tie with Lyon.
Saha has a knee injury, but with Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wayne Rooney, Alan Smith and David Bellion available, United have plenty of striking options.
For Lyon, Gregory Coupet, Claudio Cacapa, Giovane Elber have been ruled out of the game through injury.
Lyon have already secured a spot in the last 16 after their 4-2 win over Fenerbahce three weeks ago.
----------
Couple of injuries there to some of their players, so it should be a bit easier for us.(Y)
fender 22-11-2004, 11:01:PM I expect United to perform well, a 2-0 win.

manutd4eva 23-11-2004, 09:30:AM Ruud rips up record
RUUD van Nistelrooy is chasing legends and could force his way to the top of the European scoring charts this season.
The Old Trafford ace seems unstoppable, relentlessly ripping through the record books and Ryan Giggs believes his Manchester United team mate is on his way to Europe's pinnacle.
As United push for a place in the first knock-out phase of the Champions League against group leaders Olympique Lyon at Old Trafford on Tuesday, van Nistelrooy is edging ever closer to becoming the best all-time scorer in Europe's top competition.
The Dutch ace has left all his Manchester United predecessors trailing, smashing virtually every club scoring record since moving from PSV Eindhoven three years ago, and goes into the Lyon clash with only three players between him and Europe's top spot.
"Ruud's statistics in the Champions League are frightening really when you consider that he is coming up against Europe's top defenders, the top defenders in each league in different countries and consistently over the past four or five years he has scored goals," says Giggs.
Van Nistelrooy swept past Denis Law's 35-year-old club record in September when he rescued the Reds by scoring both goals in the 2-2 draw with Lyon in France to become the first Old Trafford player to score 30 goals in Europe.
Since then more legendary names have been left in his wake.
He has overtaken Hungarian genius Ferenc Puskas who scored 36 times for
Honved and Real Madrid half a century ago, and 37 goal German ace Gerd Muller the World Cup striker who helped Bayern Munich win the trophy in three consecutive seasons during the 1970s.
Van Nistelrooy's four goals against Sparta Prague in United's last Champions League outing took his personal tally to 43, eight scored during his days with PSV and an impressive 35 from 36 appearances with the Reds.
It also put him within reach of Eusebio, Sixties hero of Portugal and Benfica and it now looks like being a battle between van Nistelrooy and Real Madrid's Raul to see who can set new standards.
Raul took his overall total to 48 thanks to three goals this season and is just one behind all-time best Alfredo di Stefano the Argentinean who masterminded Madrid's domination of the European Cup in its early years. Van
Nistelrooy needs another four-goal flurry to put the pressure on the Spaniard and will be hoping to get on the score sheet against Lyon.
----------------------------
He's surpassed some legends of the game, and getting closer to some more. I'll never understand the people who says he "****".
manutd12 23-11-2004, 09:57:AM Lyon is the only team in our CL group that can makes us loose, im expecting a very difficult match for united, last match we almost lost thanks to our great keeper howard

shokz 24-11-2004, 03:27:AM Rio Ferdinand is no doubt world class and is finally living up to his enormous price tag, great setup for van Nistelrooij's goal. All keepers make mistakes and Carroll has only made one, Howard made a series of them so Fergie should stick with Carroll imo. Keane, Rooney, van Nistelrooy(particularly holding up the ball), Brown, Ferdinand, Silvestre, Scholes, Ronaldo were all class and Fletcher was alright too.
Better in the second half but Lyon are a very good team and should go quite far in the European Cup. Liverpool lost. Congrats Fergie.

Thelonious 24-11-2004, 03:36:AM Good game , both teams played good attacking football . Carrolls mistake was a shocker , but all goalkeepers make a mistake at some point. All the players played well except for Neville and Caroll. Essien was class for the Lyon though , we should look at him to replace Keane hes only 21.

I agree it was enjoyable but I think Lyon played all the football, neater, slicker, nicer passing. Brown was more attacking but he is liable to make a mistake, and when defenders make a mistake, it's a goal. He did one last night and luckily united got the ball back, but it wasnt even mentioned, if they'd of scored from it, it would of been. Ferguson would of seen and remembered it of course, but I don't think painting over the cracks is gonna help.
But yeah, like I said it was a good game and im very glad United are through. I'd like to see them do well in the CL this year, well i'd love to see them win it. But like me and my mates were sayin, if a team like Madrid just about qualifies now on bad form, who's to say that come next year they're gonna be in the same form? They could be flighing by the time the quaters and semi's come around.
So could any other team, it'll be interestin to see how Barca are because right now they're in the form of their lives.
Well done United though :) And well done Ruud.
entertaining attacking football by both site. i wonder why we can't play up to this standard in EPL?

We must have watched two different matches, because the match I saw, Lyon were outclassed for the most part. I'll agree they had their rare flashes of brilliance, but our performances were far more consistent throughout the match. Our passing and movement was some of the best I've seen this season. Neville, Brown and Ferdinand were a revelation going forward, and that added more to our attack.
Fernandez 24-11-2004, 09:26:PM Ferdinand must be gutted that he is the only defender in the First Four that has not scored yet this season. Nice assist, Rionaldo.

We must have watched two different matches, because the match I saw, Lyon were outclassed for the most part. I'll agree they had their rare flashes of brilliance, but our performances were far more consistent throughout the match. Our passing and movement was some of the best I've seen this season. Neville, Brown and Ferdinand were a revelation going forward, and that added more to our attack.
agreed. some 1 or 2 touches passing are brilliant. players linkage are great as well
