I once got really excited because I found the original Major League, in wide screen, in one of those bins, but my joy was soon turned to dismay, when I realized that I could hear the DVD in two pieces inside the case and it was the only copy I could find in the bin. :(

yeah no kidding, I love those bargain bins! I haven't had too much luck looking for DVD's in them, but I usually find good music in the CD bargain bins, really cheap too. Especially if you're into retro, there's always lots there..

The people weren't bad, it was the cashiers that pissed me off. I stood in a line (that wasn't all that long) for 2 hours while the two chicks at the cash register were laughing it up and sh*t. They were pretty cute though. :p

The people who shop at the mall/shopping center that is like 15 minutes from my house suck. It's a really, really nice place to shop, but the people are just really snobbish and rude. The Best Buy is awesome, though. There are a couple of cuties that work the registers. One always blushes when I go to her line. :D

Naahh no way it's a teen movie dude, actually I'd even go as far as to say that the older you are the more you'll probably apprieciate it. I think the target audience for this movie is probably guys like me in the late 20's, early 30's crowd...

Teen movies these days are all pretty pathetic, they were cool back in the 80's though :D I grew up on flicks like Pretty in Pink, Somekind of Wonderful, Sixteen Candles, etc... I have to admit, I still watch them from time to time (it's my guilty pleasure, hehe)

I have a DVD burner, so my purchases have gone down a lot from what they were. I only buy 'cream of the crop' movies. Last movie purchased, Goodfellas SE. I've been waiting for Anchorman DVD (Dec 28) for a Long time, and ill buy the collectors set which comes with bonus movie thats made from bloopers/extra and deleted scenes.

Just curious, how many DVD's would you all say you have?

I have about 35 bought movies and 70 (grows by the week) burnt ones:D

hey Hakeem, do you plan on buying every Seinfeld season? Thats why i steer clear of buying TV shows, its just too big a commitment especially for long running shows like Seinfeld and Simpsons. I burned Sopranos, Family Guy, Chappelle's show though. I just got first season of Arrested Development(Y)

I finally managed to get hold of a film I've been looking for for ages - Kaos by the Taviani brothers. Unfortunately it's only subtitled in french so I hope my GSCE French classes hold out. Anyway, I cant wait to see it.

I also picked up a copy of a really cool, witty American film called Diner, I saw it once before and thought the dialogues were Tarantino standard.

I then bought one of the old Ealing Comedies called Kind Hearts and Coronets, my dad assures me it's good and I want to see Alec Guiness in a role where he doesnt where a brown cloak or army uniform.

Finally I bought a film called How To Get Ahead in Advertising, starring Richard E Grant and by the director of the awesome Withnail & I. I'm really looking forward to this. Theres no region code on the box though so I hope it works on my player.

Anyway, you've definitely gotta see it, bro. I can only properly explain its many qualities in expletives and that won't help much since all you'll see will be *******************s. From the dialogue, to the setting and the actors, just mesmerizing stuff, man.

havent seen it yet so I dont know. but yeah it sucks, specially cause the guys from Broken Lizard said, for the DVD release, that they werent going to release an Unrated Version cause they didnt have anything to add, and now they did! :(

its supposed to have more nudity probably and I only bought it cause it was on sale for 9.99 but now I tried to buy the original and its everywhere for 7 bucks so Im going to just give it to a friend or something.

I got the Anchorman "giftset" yesterday. Really disappointed with the set, when they say "gift set" i was expecting something special, but it was just to movies wrapped together in plastic rap.

Dont get me wrong, the actual product was as expected, spectacular, but paying the extra money, i thought id get some special casing or something.

I go to the cinema two times a week at least (this week I went three times), guess you could say I am a movie geek and I didn't find Hero that great either. Amazing cinematography but that's about it.

Sir Calumn
03-01-2005, 04:30:AM
I thought Hero was incredible, a really masterful piece of cinema. Everything about it was totally beautiful, I started to think about it recently and when you look back, you begin to see and realise how every possible storyline was uniquely 'colour-coded' within the film and how the colours reflect the storyline. I loved the uncertainty of it, and the fight scenes were out of the world. If you want something more fast paced with a more definate storyline, try House of Flying Daggers, which was better in that respect, but nowhere near as cinematographically (sp??) perfect as Hero. At anytime in it, you could have frozen the screen and it would be good enough to hang in an art gallery.

I do agree about the subtitles, I have got so used to them now that I hardly notice them in most films, but in Hero having to read the subtitles did mean less time looking at the scene which was a shame, but really, you could watch it without any subtitles or words at all and still really enjoy it, a pleasure to watch.

I personally think Pacino's best performance comes in a film he did when he was really young called Dog Day Afternoon. It's about two low-life criminals, Pacino and Cazale (Fredo in The Godfather), who attempt a small-time bank-robbery only to bungle it magnificantly and ending up as a nation event with half the army after them. It's a really superb acting performance from Pacino, far more complex then the relatively simple and repetitive mob-bosses he plays. It's a superb film too - it's on Barry Norman's must see list and I personally highly recommend it.

::Hagi::
18-01-2005, 11:42:PM
In my opinion Pacino's best movies were made when he was a bit younger. During the last years, especially after Godfather part 3, he's performing bad. Don't know, but he looks tired and bored. Only the one with him, Robert de Niro and Val Kilmer, forgot the name now, was ok.

I quite agree - with both DeNiro and Pacino, the standard of their acting is much higher in the films where they are younger. I guess it's complacency or something. Even in The Godfather, Pacino's acting was by far the best in the early part of GF1 when he was really young.

I think the film you are thinking of is Heat, though I thought it was pretty poor. Pacino was disappointing in The Recruit too, though he was good in The Merchant of Venice.

::Hagi::
19-01-2005, 12:10:AM
Yeah. I saw the Recruit as well and must say, that it was one of his worst actings ever. He seemed to be bored and was acting without any emotions for his character. Simply dissapointing

Something I've always wondered:

Does anybody here have a widescreen tv? if so, what happens when you play a 'full screen' DVD on it? Does it 'stretch the picture' or does it have black bars, but on the sides rather than the bottom?

Sir Calumn

Mine stretches the picture so it's in proportion with the whole TV - it doesnt look weird at all on DVDs, though some old VHS's do look a bit strange.

I think I might buy "Friday Night Lights" tomorrow, saw it today and it's a damn good movie. I think its better than "Remember the Titans" for those who have seen that movie.

well, I understand that the footpart of the wasnt important, that what the movie was showing was what happened in the towna nd all the obssession, etc. BUT I didnt like ANY of the kids, they were just zero characters. also, and I know this is based in a true story, they were horrible football players, and its imposible that they get to where they did. plus, we only see them play a few times in the first round, they play reall bad but somehow win, and suddenly they're in the finals. how did they get there?

SPOILER

and then when you learn at the end that after they lost, the next year, the coach took the team to the championship I got really mad. why the **** didnt they do the movie about that team then??? (N)

I liked Friday Nights as well. Judging by the trailors i didnt have too high hopes, but it was surprisingly good to me. Kind of like a serious version of Varsity Blues, another kick*ss movie.

But Hakeem makes a couple good points. I do agree the characters didnt have much depth, apart from Boobie Miles and son of Tim McGraw.

One of the reasons i liked FNL was because it wasnt such a happy ending, which it would have been had they used the following years story.

Hakeem, if you buy it tell me how the commentary with La Russo and Miyagi is.

I already have the original, wanna see if its worth it. I havent heard from Macchio/La Russo since 'My Cousin Vinny', and itd be interesting to hear what he has to say. Considering he's like 43, and im guessing about 15 times a day people ask him, "hey arent you the karate kid?'

(just thinking about it i wanna get it)

just bought the simpsons season 2 on dvd, and hot shots 1 and 2. the bastards cut out the scene from the second movie where they are about to get their groove on ( topper and michelle) and are making out in the limmo, and the driver keeps trying to watch, running alongside the car even, andthe also cut the scene where they are making love, which to my memory didn't show that much t 'n a.
