this is really unreal, it happen to me to, i signed Cristiano Ronaldo after he played only 5 games in one season with ManU

i believe this is all due to the playing level.
the assistant for the non player controlled opponent, selects the line up according to playing level.

if a star player with high player level gets injured for a long period, the player may not start even after recovery becos his playing level needs (long) time to increase.

for a galactico team like real madrid, players like beckham, figo and zidane may sit the bench for many games becos most of the other not so starry payers also have high playing levels.
