Virgo 28-11-2004, 09:24:AM kinda harsh to make assumptions about films you never saw judging by the reviews/trailers
Callan 28-11-2004, 10:13:AM Kind of harsh to comment on just the final 10 there.
Who cares, that's what I think, I haven't seen the films, I might be completely wrong, Finding Neverland might be crap, but hey, I don't think it will be, and that's what I think, so what?
What's your problem?
WTF is up with this board lately... you all got poles stuck up your arses... must be that time of the month...
;)
Callan 28-11-2004, 10:16:AM Oh and BTW... I don't read reviews. I only watch the trailer and decided... "that looks ok, that looks crap" then I go and see it... but I don't expect anything from it when I do... and then I come out surprised...
Just like the forgotten... I had no idea it was about aliens... From the trailer I only thought the movie would be about her loosing her sun thats it... but that was a bad film.
IceBlu 28-11-2004, 12:04:PM I hated the Village. So predictable from start to finish.
M. Night Shyamalan is so overrated its not even funny.
Secret Window was crap as well. The same storyline could have been made into a much better movie.
I actually kinda liked Man on Fire. Not that it was a great movie or anything but I guess its been a while since i watched a violent movie ...
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Machinist were the 2 best movies i saw this year.
Sir Calumn 28-11-2004, 06:15:PM Bit early for this as there's still another month and a bit to go with plenty coming out, eg Garden State, Millions, House of Flying Daggers etc, so perhaps we can do another thread like this when 2004 is actually over.
There's so much I havent seen but will be seeing over the next month, (Hero, Beyond the Sea, Garden State, Millions, House of Flying Daggers, Mondovino, Manchurian Candidate, Team America, Churchill: The Hollywood Years) and all have the potential to be in the top 10, so I dont think I can even try to form one till it's all over.
However, the films which I thought have been particularly special so far was Kill Bill 2 (of course), Dead Man's Shoes (an awesome, awesome film), Coffee and Cigarettes (Jarmusch has done it again), Farenheit 9/11 (pretty much revolutionised a genre) and Layer Cake (Finally, another decent brit gangster film). All will be in my top 10 I'm sure.
I will make a top 10 in one months time :)

I'd say he's overrated..
the village was no different than most of his movies, Sixth Sense & Signs were predictable as hell too. Signs is a borderline comedy in my opinion, considering how stupid it was...
PhiLLer 29-11-2004, 05:48:AM I loved Starsky & Hutch, thought it was very funny.

What shouldn't be good:
The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie Surprisingly awesome
Christmas with the Kranks Not that bad. better than Surviving Christmas
Closer Julia Roberts hater  if not, Why?
Blade 3 should be good IMO, first one was good, second one had The Bloodpack -> cool
Team America (stupid f**king piece of f**k suck my d**k)this one was really funny :D

Virgo 30-11-2004, 12:15:AM I thought Starsky & Hutch was pish.
::shinji:: 30-11-2004, 01:42:AM didn't see it, but I usually like anything Ben Stiller's in (exept "Duplex"). I'll have to check it out...
ronnifan9 30-11-2004, 01:56:AM i cant wait to see "closer"....does anybody know if there are any sex scenes:D

Virgo 30-11-2004, 04:42:AM Dodgeball > Starsky & Hutch
Callan 30-11-2004, 06:35:AM I didn't really like Starsky and Hutch that much. Dodgeball was good, I thought Anchorman was better but IMO, it was funnier.

she's 4th for billing. JUlia is n1 (H)
and I pretty sure Julia Roberts has some nudity cause the rating talks about nudity and she's already done it in Pretty Woman so it wouldnt be new.
Natalie Portman says they filmed a scene of her being topless but that she asked director Mike Nichols to cut it and he did, and also deleted it forever. so now there's all this talk about it and if we'll ever get to see that scene.
I think, its all promotional to create buzz, she didn get naked IMO.
ronnifan9 30-11-2004, 06:52:AM damn....natalie portman has to be one of the cutes girls...not hot 'cause she dont really have a body...;)
Sir Calumn 30-11-2004, 11:24:PM I havent seen Dodgeball either :( I very rarely go to the cinema to see comedies.
I dont find Julia Roberts massively attracting :$ She has a great body, and her face is kinda pretty, but something doesnt quite work for me. Natalie on the other hand, I love her.

Things I like:
The forgotten at number 2 on the bottom 10 list.
You mentioned the Village (H) about time someone appreciated my favourite film.
Things I don't like:
I don't think the girl next door is an instant classic, it god extremely dumb at the end.
other than that good stuff.
I have seen something like... 30 - 40 films this year (in cinema), nothing compared to ur 128... but i payed outright for mine... ah... so that's where all my bloody money went!

Virgo 01-01-2005, 10:02:PM it's actually " A film of epic portions "
Deutschland 01-01-2005, 10:08:PM I just saw the Terminal. Didn't like it. I cringed every time Tom Hanks put on that poor excuse for a foreign accent. I'm also puzzled - in American movies especially, anyone who doesn't speak English is portrayed as an absolute idiot? What the hell was up with Tom Hanks walk? He looked like he had Downe's syndrome. :|
(Catherine Zeta-Jones is hot, though.)
Hakeem 02-01-2005, 12:28:AM awesome list Calumn (Y)
loved the best fights, scenes and dialogue.
Id add Seed of Chucky's tagline there: "Get a load of Chucky" :funny:
Sir Calumn 03-01-2005, 04:15:AM LMAO, I didnt know about it but it would definately be there if I did :p
When I did the best fights list, I forgot completely about House of Flying Daggers, there are a couple of awesome fights in it which should probably be on that list.
Vagegast 04-01-2005, 03:43:AM My irrelevant list of movies, I haven't seen half the movies you guys have seen but I'm catching up.
1. Osama
I'm biased of course but this was a special movie. I actually saw the premiere at Georgetown University with the Afghan ambassador (H) But really, y'll should really watch this
2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Carrey always picks the wrong movies when he chooses to do non-serious movies but not this time. Credit to Charlie Kaufman too (Y)
3. Kill Bill Vol. 2
No elaboration needed; Tarantino's a genius
4. The Machinist
5. Bourne Supremacy
Best action movie in years, plus it's better than the first one
6. Collateral
7. Passion of the Christ
Gibson's a nut but he can make a great movie
8. Ray
Not perfect but Jamie Foxx is amazing
9. The Girl Next Door
So sue me (H)
10. The Day After Tomorrow
Outside of the top 4, it's in random order..
Disappointments: Manchurian Candidate, Spider-man 2, Fahrenheit 9/11, the Dreamers, The Hunting of the President. They may not suck that bad but they didn't live up to the hype.
Sir Calumn 04-01-2005, 05:35:AM What is that Osama film you speak of?
Vagegast 04-01-2005, 06:16:AM It's an indie film about a girl under the Taliban regime. She has to cut her air and disguise herself as a boy so to keep her family from dying.
Trailer: http://mfile.akamai.com/28/asf/mgm.download.akamai.com/28/heg/OSAMA_cs_300K.asx
Sir Calumn 04-01-2005, 06:24:AM Wow looks very good, I'd never heard of it before. How readily available is it?
Vagegast 04-01-2005, 06:31:AM It's been out on DVD for a long time, although it's only region-1 (NTSC). If I find a version compatible with England's, I will let you know
Btw, it was even played at the White House:• "Osama": It's the Afghan film that's sweeping the administration, if not the nation.
The buzz started when first lady Laura Bush screened it at the White House on Jan. 28 and blurbed it for this column as a "disturbing" must-see for anyone interested in Afghan women's rights. Then her husband watched the Golden Globe-winning movie, about a little girl's survival under Taliban rule. He promptly advised Cabinet members to see it. The studio sent cassettes to Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, national security adviser Condoleezza Rice and Secretary of State Colin Powell. Powell liked it so much that the State Department is working with MGM/UA to get the movie to troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.
"This movie will sear your soul," Powell said in a blurb, er, statement yesterday. "It will show you where evil lives and how it dominates human life. It will make you hurt. But in the end it will teach you why President Bush is right about waging the war on terrorists until there are no more of them."
Hillary Clinton sponsored a screening last week with fellow Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison. Maybe their blurbs will get it reconsidered for an Oscar.
Sir Calumn 04-01-2005, 06:36:AM Thanx, I'll look out for it.
Virgo 04-01-2005, 07:55:AM The day after tomorrow? :(

David Carradine Best Supporting Actor :bob:
Mikey 06-01-2005, 01:54:PM Did Eternal Spotlight do poorly in theatres? I heard very little about it when it was out.
In all honesty, what were they thinking with that long ass name? Not a smart move comercially, and its a pain in the ass to type as well.
Deutschland 06-01-2005, 01:55:PM I am about to watc h Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind... I'll get back to you (H)
Callan 06-01-2005, 02:46:PM You think that they thought about people who type, write or speak the name 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' when they created the film? Watch it, you will understand where the name comes from, it is said in the film. I don't believe it did that well in cinema, it was a low budged independent film... well at least here in Australia, I heard nothing of it really, only saw the trailer like once or twice...
John_Arne_Riise 06-01-2005, 07:48:PM Blade 3 was alright, not as good as the first 2, but it was hell funny.
The directors cut of Butterfly Effect was a hell of a lot better than the cinema version.
The Village was just plain ****.
The first half of Dodgeball was really funny, 2nd half was only ok.
Oceans 12 was meh.
Saw was ok.
The Aviator and Elektra im looking forward to.
I enjoyed Resident Evil 2.
Alien vs Predator was borderline. (It didnt have the suspense like the stand alone movies. Well mainly the Aliens movies.) It was a bit flat out.

I cant believe Dead Man's Shoes isnt in the top 10 indie films :(
PS: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Callan is right, typing that is a pain in the arse) was on general release in the UK and did pretty well.
Hakeem 07-01-2005, 11:50:AM I dont think Dead Man's Shoes qualifies as 2004 since for awards here in the US the movie has to at least been in release in theatres for 7 days in Los Angeles, CA.
Im guessing Dead Man's Shoes will be shown in the festival circuit this year and we'll be talked about next year if its that good.
Also, because you've talked about it before, Layer Cake was showed in a movie festival last month and the word was really good: http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=18867

mannyb28 08-01-2005, 02:24:AM I liked Napoleon Dynamite and SpiderMan 2
Hakeem 24-01-2005, 06:22:AM well, I decided to update my top 30 of 2004 because since the start of the new year Ive seen around 6 or 7 movies that are actually from 2004 and some of them got into my top 30, even top 15.
Main Changes:
- In Good Company @ #5
- Hotel Rwanda and House of Flying Daggers @ #13 and #15
- Alfie got to #29 despite my disappointing first reaction.
- A Home at the End of the World, Alexander, Shall We Dance and The Life and Death of Peter Sellers out of the top 30. mostly because while I consider them good to great movies (except Alexander, I dont know why I liked it), I just dont care for them.
- Other movies watched in 2005 but that are from 2004: The Woodman & The Assassination of Richard Nixon & Kinsey (all great), Ray (both excellent, but I just dont care much about it).

Just saw finding neverland. Thought it was pretty good (Y). I saw it last night and I liked it a lot. I think Julie Christie's performance was a bit overhyped though.
Hakeem 24-01-2005, 11:33:AM Julie Christie's Hook scene was priceless (Y)
Virgo 24-01-2005, 03:01:PM Hidalgo?? WTF??? What a worthless poor excuse for a movie

we didnt get it in theatres, just on HBO. but I particularly did watch in theatres at promotional screening. and yeah, if the movie would've been released in theatres Geoffrey Rush would fight for a spot for Best Actor at the Oscars

Only film I had ever seen Rush in before was PotC so you can imagine my surprise when I heard he was playing Sellers, and my even greater amazement when I saw how good he was.
Hakeem 26-01-2005, 04:50:AM you need to see Quills. Rush, Winslett and Joaquin Phoenix are all excellent
Mikey 26-01-2005, 11:32:AM I Finally saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. All the hype is true, this is definately one of, if not the best films of the year. I really can't find any flaws in this movie, i just wish it was a little longer.
My only beef with it, which I've mentioned before is the bad choice for the title of this movie. Its just too damn long and hard to say (i always mix up 'Sunshine' with 'Spotless'). Ya, maybe it has a meaning, but they couldve used a more 'user friendly' name. Its hard to recommend this movie to friends when the name is such a pain in the *ss to say.
Sir Calumn 26-01-2005, 11:13:PM It should just be called Eternal Sunshine with 'Of the Spotless Mind' as a subtitle, like Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.
