its being called the Pulp Fiction of the new century, and it has the cast and the background for it. should be awesome:

The crime noir flick, which stars almost everyone, condenses several of Miller’s Sin City tales (“That Yellow Bastard”, “The Big Fat Kill” and “The Hard Goodbye”, the name assigned to the initial Marv and Goldie story), meshing them together in three distinct arcs whose characters cross paths throughout the film.

the cast:

Jessica Alba .... Nancy Callahan - hot
Devon Aoki .... Miho
Maria Bello .... Ava Lord - hot
Alexis Bledel .... Becky - I love her
Rosario Dawson .... Gail - big tits
Benicio Del Toro .... Jack Rafferty (Y)
Michael Clarke Duncan .... Manute (Y)
Rick Gomez .... Mr. Shlubb
Carla Gugino .... Lucille - hot
Josh Hartnett .... The Employee
Jaime King .... Goldie/Wendy - hot
Michael Madsen .... Bob (Y)
Jason McDonald .... Ronnie
Brittany Murphy .... Shellie - hot
Sherrell Murphy-Ramos .... Molly prince
Tommy Nix .... Weeval
Clive Owen .... Dwight (Y)
Mickey Rourke .... Marv (Y)
Marley Shelton .... The Customer
Nick Stahl .... Junior/Yellow Bastard (Y)
Scott Teeters .... Lenny/Benny
Makenzie Vega .... Young Nancy
Arie Verveen .... Murphy
Bruce Willis .... Hartigan (Y)
Elijah Wood .... Kevin (Y)

Sin City is a crime noir Comic Book but not like the regular ones, there are just around 7 or 8 books each with a different story. this movie portrays 3 of those books combined.

its mostly in B&W but it has some things in color (some eyes, some skins, wounds, etc).
the movie is going to be the same way, in B&W with some color to keep it like the comic :D

Could be great or terrible judging from the trailor. Im not sure about the "star-studded" cast. People like Owen, Del Toro, Madsen, Stahl, Dawson and Willis are good. But Brittany Murphy, Jamie King, Bledel, Hartnett, Alba and Duncan could ruin things.

the mickey Rourke character at the start of the trailor looks like Hell Boy.

To me, this movie reminded me of Dick Tracy, Last Action Hero and a superhero movie combined.

I agree about some of that, all the women are not reliable though:

- Alexis Bledel hasnt done anything yet. most of the people dont know her unless they watch Gilmore Girls in which she's awesome (plus I love her :D)
- Jessica Alba has a huge following. I dont really like though
- Michael Clarke Duncan is good (Y)
- Josh Harnett is not that bad. I liked some of his roles before.

- Jamie King and Brittany Murphy are annoying and not god actresses (N)

- Alexis Bledel looks like shes 16, dont think shes right for this movie

- Jessica Alba is really hot, but theres a reason why she hasnt really taken off career wise.

- I like Duncan, but i didnt like him in 'Daredevil', and thats the kind of role i see him playing in this.

- Hartnett's alright, but id take someone like James Franco over him anyday

- I dont like King at all, but Murphys alright. Can really only play the same 'loud mouth' role though.

Im not sure about the black and white thing, it turns a lot of people off

What is the deal, on the tv commercials, with Tarintino as a special guest director. Hakeem and Callum mentioned it there, but does anyone have anymore info? Is Rodriguez like Tarintino's protoge or something, or have they worked together in the past? I thought I saw tim roth in the preview for a second, but being that Madsens in it, could the connection be there?

Hakeem
10-03-2005, 11:24:PM
yes, Robert Rodriguez is kind of QT's protege. for example QT wrote From Dusk Till Dawn and Robert directed it. and they've worked together a lot more.

and nope, Tim Roth is not in Sin City.

and this has nothing to do with Max Payne. actually, maybe max payne was inspired by Frank Miller's comics.

and about QT as a guest director, he directed the opening scene only, which is the story of Josh Harnett and Jamie King.
Robert Rodriguez directed the whole movie after that with Frank Miller (the creator of the comic) getting director's credit only because Robert wanted him. Robert even quit the Director's Guild of America for this because they dont allow director's to share the credit for the same movie :p

Sir Calumn

Desperado had a large Tarantino imput too, and they worked together on Four Rooms. Damn Rodriguez was lucky with his mentor :(

Hakeem

Sir Calumn

That was Lawrence Bender I think, a close friend of QT and producer of most Band Apart films, so I suspect QT had a big hand in it.

my full review :D

Robert Rodriguez had to quit the DGA so Sin City creator Frank Miller could share Directing credits with him in the movie, and he also got crazy mastermind Quentin Tarantino to be guest director and put a little of him the movie. The result is a masterful story filled incredible visual style taken right out of Frank Miller's violent and tragic books.
The movie combines 3 of the books and moves in a Pulp Fiction sort of way, giving us lots characters all performed perfectly by the great and talented cast. I won't get into much detail as how the stories go because with so many characters and crime and violence being the theme of the movie, I would be spoiling their faith, so I'll just name which characters form part of what stories and who they are.

The Hard Goodbye is the first of Miller's books, and follows the story of Marv (Mickey Rourke), a big, tough, covered in band-aids man currently on parole, and seeking revenge for the death of his true love, a prostitute called Goldie (Jamie King). His parole officer and friend is Lucille (Carla Gunino).
He also receives the help of Goldie's twin sister Wendy (also Jamie King of course) and the killer is a young cannibal called Kevin (Elijah Wood).
Marv's is the best character in the movie for me and his story is also the most satisfying to watch, and not completely because Jamie King and Carla Gunino are both naked most of the time. Mickey Rourke is a marvel to watch here and Carla Gunino puts a great supporting performance too.

The Big Fat Kill is the third book in the series, and the central story in the movie. Dwight (Clive Owen) protects his new friend, a waitress called Shellie (Brittany Murphy), from her crazy exboyfriend and cop Jack Rafferty aka Jackie Boy (Benicio Del Toro), who doesn't want to be her exboyfriend. The story takes them to the city' Old Town, ruled by the prostitutes after an arrangement with the cops that keeps them out of the place letting the women to protect themselves. They are led by Gail (Rosario Dawson), a former lover of Dwight's, and there's also the very young Becky (Alexis Bledel) and the deadly Miho (Devon Aoki). Jackie Boy's side is later led by a big black man called Manute (Michael Clarke Duncan).
Dwight is also one of the best characters, with very good work by Clive Owen. My beloved Alexis Bledel looks great, and the amazing Devon Aoki provides the best action.

Finally we have That Yellow Bastard, the fourth book, named after the deadly rapist called Junior (Nick Stahl), who trying to get to Nancy (Jessica Alba), an almost victim of his acts years ago, now a stripper working at Shellie's bar. John Hartigan (Bruce Willis) is the cop that stopped him that time and must Nancy again after getting out of jail. Hartigan's partner is Bob (Michael Madsen).
This story is split during the movie and it works great, with Bruce Willis doing a great job in the lead as well as Jessica Alba.

Besides those three stories, there is an isolated opening scene consisting of a dialog between a salesman (Josh Harnett) and his customer (Marley Shelton).

I haven't mentioned, though it's easy to deduct from the trailers, that the movie has the same style of the books, being all in black and white with just some objects in color like blood, lights, shoes or hair to name some. This style looks amazing, and was filmed like last year's Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, with the actors working against a green screen and then Robert Rodriguez added the backgrounds using today's technology.
These excellent visuals, smart and violent action stories, and the great work by the entire cast, make Sin City the movie an excellent adaptation from the probably excellent books by Frank Miller. I can't wait to read them and watch the movie again.

For anybody wondering which scene Tarantino directed...

*** SPOILERS ***

(it was the one with Clive Owens character in the car with Del Toro's decapitated head)

Hakeem
03-04-2005, 07:21:AM
yep, that was the one. no spoiler really :p

Sin City is based on three graphic novels by Frank Miller (who also co-directed the project). For the feature film, Rodriguez and Miller tied the three books together so that they could flow together as one movie. For the DVD, however, viewers will have the option of watching the whole film together or watching each book separately as they appeared in the novels, complete with new footage.

"We shot the full stories of the books," Rodriguez says. "And I knew we could truncate it down, we weren't going to lose any scenes. Eventually they would all be available for people to see. The DVD will come out with the theatrical cut, and then there will be a separate disc that's got the individual episodes separate with their own title card and you could just watch The Big Fat Kill from beginning to end in its full cut as a single story and then switch over and watch The Yellow Bastard, and that's 45 minutes. It will have all the material back in, so it will be like the experience of picking up the books where you pick up one story and you read it from beginning to end and it will have all the material in it. So you can kind of shuffle your own version of the movie and just watch them all separately."

Just got back from seeing Sin City.
I never read the comic books nor had I heard much about them but from what I heard and it being a Robert Rodriguez film with a guest direction of QT it had to be good. My expectations were high and it didn't disapoint.
What a movie! wow!

So unique and great storytelling, great visuals, great everything and special mention to Jessica Alba, dang! :jap:

I went to go see the movie yesterday. Got to say it was very entertaining, and it always kept you intrested. Good unique character's and concept, very good overall. I'd watch it more than once, and id advise it to anyone. Best movie ive seen in awhile. Alba was a good positive of the movie (H) The only negative about the movie was Brittany Murphy :nape: Her Phony accent was just :|

Yeah saw this film yesterday, im only 17 and dont really look that old so we bought tickets to watch mr and mrs smith and then snuck into sin city, it was timed perfectly so it just started when we walked in. I was very impressed by this film, it was entertaining from the start to the end. I thort the characters were very cheese along with the script but i wud expect that from a film based on a comic book. Rosario dawson is very fit not forgetting the stunning jessica alba. After hearing all the hype on this film, it for once lived up to it, i was suprised that josh hartnett didnt get a longer role in the film. It was quite violent and one of the first films i cringed at especially when bruce willis shot that guys dick off!!!. Excellent film worth a look definitley.

its out in america in august i already pre-ordered it on www.playusa.com free delivery

I dont know, I wouldn't buy that DVD. Robert Rodriguez said he's working on a huge spcial edition DVD where he'll have the theatrical movie PLUS a director's cut of each of the 3 stories in 3 different disks (but all in the same package).

One of the best movies I've ever seen.

Shame they didn't manage to find a way to blend all 3 stories in one or this would have been considered one of the greatest movies of all time, up there with Pulp Fiction.

The characters even the secondary ones that get like 1 or 2 min of screen time were all excellent.

Definitely the best Comic book movie ever.

The director try to use the comic as the guideline for this movies but the scenes bored me as they are always holding still

It doesnt matter if the movie is several mins long, but it is quite tired to watch it for two hours

Just came back from the theatre and I got to say it's great seeing Rodriguez finally fulfilling the potential we all knew he had. Honestly, after all the crap he made in the past years I'd given up on him, so thanks Robert. :jap:

Not gonna repeat what everybody said about this film 2 months ago, but I was browsing the first pages and found out I never replied Mikey:

As for us being lucky, look at this way..

maybe we get the movies 2 months before you, but you get to see worldclass soccer live (if you make the drive to Spain of course ;) joke)

You got to see Euro 2004 in your backyard.

Is Conan dubbed in portuguese, or is it in English?

Well, we do get to see good football here in Porto, even more since FC Porto plays regularly in the CL, but it would be good to not wait so damn long to see the movies. :p

Actually I get Conan on 2 different channels: 1)MNBC or whatever its name is runs recent shows (usually one day after its shown on the US) with no subtitles, 2) Sic Comedy airs 1 month-old shows with subtitles.
We don't dub anything over here because we're not Spain. (Y)

Sorry to drag this thread up, but I have only just seen this film and thought it was absolutely AMAZING! I was just in awe of how incredible it is - I have always liked Rodriguez's films but never thought he could achieve anything like this! Everything about it was just perfect, the cinematography was just beautiful and I have never seen computer-effects used so well. The storylines were equally amazing, I was gripped from the start and the end left me desperate for more, the whole structure was so clever and each individual story was so good, aswell as so fantastically over the top, that it never stopped being perfect. The structure is, infact, essentially exactly the same as Pulp Fiction - the very first and last scenes containing one cool character who does not appear anywhere else but sets the first and last impressions (Tim Roth/Josh Hartnet), then going onto the first story which is split into two parts, one part being before the other two stories and the other after, then another two stories in between which actually take place considerably after the first one, even though you get the feel they are running parallel. It's obviously a structre that works and I expect to see it used more in fragmented narratives.

The acting was also incredible, not one weak cog. When the little characters were on stage with the big, both were equally class and everything was totally natural. I have always been a big fan of Mickey Rourke and I'm so glad to see him finally putting in the massive performance I knew he was capable of and getting the praise he deserved and I am so greatful to RR for giving him the chance. Willis also put in a performance as good as any of his past greats and Clive Owen proved my early dislike for him, after King Arthur, to be totally false and he knocked them dead along side Benicio Del Toro who never puts a foot wrong in any film. Some people have criticised the film for being unbelievable, highlighting elements like the sexiness of all the whores, but in a film like this you dont care about believability and I really liked the girls constantly on screen as it really added to the film.

Just a totally amazing film, I am so glad I have seen it in the cinema, best film this year by a long shot and already one of my all time favourites, I am still in awe of how good it was.

well its about flaming time that i got around to writing my Sin City review, so here it is:

Film Review: Sin City

Good god it's been a while since my last review, indeed it seems a lifetime ago that I sat down to watch the wonderful Revenge of the Sith, but as with life; cinema listings move on as the film I’ve been waiting for finally hits the British cinema; Sin City.

Frank Miller's Sin City takes place in a fictional world or pain based on his infamous graphic novels; directed by himself and Robert Rodriguez and with a massive array of Hollywood acting talent; this is definitely a film I’ve been waiting for. The story bases itself around 3 different narrative 'strands' that often overlap each other. Bruce Willis, Clive Owen and Mickey Rouke play the respective three lead roles accompanied by endless amounts of other big names. Willis is Hartigan, the tough, close-to-retirement cop on his last mission to save a girl from rape. Owen plays Dwight, a roughed up ex-detective whose part becomes ever more important as the film progresses. Finally Rouke plays Marv, the gentle giant who’s wrongly and deliberately accused of killing a prostitute.

It will come as no surprise that I’m doing no justice to Sin City's wonderfully complex plot, a crime-thriller that winds itself around a cast in beautifully constructed scenes that’s too hard to put down into just a few hundred words. Sin City's main thing is its multiple plot strands, using all three main characters allows it to use many other side characters endlessly as Miller clearly intended, this is a clever device that allows Sin City to weave all the magic it wants to, whenever it wants to.

The first thing anyone will notice about Sin City is its exceptional and utterly unique appearance, complex CGI and some brilliant creativity by Rodriguez allow the movie to look how it wants to without it ever being noticeably unrealistic, in a distinct parody of the old film-noir genre the film takes ideas from all other kinds of movies, from thrillers to comedies. Sin City's visual brilliance will blow even the heaviest skeptic away.

Sin City's acting is very good, all three leads are incredible in their parts and the leads have clearly been well cast by Rodriguez. Rouke is particularly interesting and deep as the ever-weird Marv, he plays a role that at first seems unrealistic yet as the film progresses becomes wonderfully written and subsequently well acted. Owen has some exceptionally well written narrations that make for some hilarious lines in some of the more serious parts of the film. The supporting cast in Sin City is beyond brilliant, Jessica Alba and Benicio Del Toro are superb in their respective roles and there's solid backup from the rest of the cast, the scenes between Owen and Del Toro are particularly well acted.

Sin City is a weird film, for all the things I’ve listed about how great this film is I simply can’t get away from some fundamental flaws. The plot itself is far too complex for most cinema fans, this isn’t a criticism of Sin City in anyway but I believe it will be far too complicated for most to enjoy, this will undoubtedly hurt its box office takings over the coming weeks. While this isn’t a major problem Sin City's real Achilles heel lies in the skeleton of how the movie has been made. In my opinion the film is poor as a serious movie, too many times an emotional and heart-aching scene is spoilt by a bout of violence or an unrealistically clichéd line, often some of the more sensitive issues such as rape are undermined by poor script writing that only helps to distant the audience from the films main message. On the other hand Sin City works well as a comedy, while it might not be totally intended to do so the script simply hands itself to a nice working black comedy reminiscent of something such as Breast Men (Daivd Schwimmer), making Sin City force you to smile even at the most demented of scenes.

So I arrive at my conclusion with a mixed head, I did enjoy this movie but not as much as I expected, it does appear to me that the intrusion of comedy onto an overwhelmingly serious plot only hurts the film in the long run, and despite the phenomenal visuals, great acting and superb originality, Sin City simply cant live up to it’s vast and inevitable self-inflicted hype.

4/5 - Still very good despite it's flaws.

TROD.

"The plot itself is far too complex for most cinema fans, this isn’t a criticism of Sin City in anyway but I believe it will be far too complicated for most to enjoy"

Are you sure you're talking about Sin City here?

About the rest of that paragraph I you missed the fact that it's a faithful comic book adaptation and therefore the dialog is exactly the same type as you'd find if you read the books. You may like it or dislike it but you can't slag it off as failed dialogs because they achieved exactly what they wanted.

Hakeem
19-07-2005, 05:48:AM
I agree about the dialogue thing, though you guys did criticize War of the Worlds when it's the same thing only that it's based on a classic book (and of the best of all time at that) instead of a comic book like Sin City :| :(

Tom
19-07-2005, 01:28:PM
thanks guys for reading the review. Virgo i dont think some of the dialogue worked, whether it be the films fault or the graphic novel's fault i just think in places it was misused, certain scenes needed to be more serious in places but were spoilt by cliched lines, thats EXACTLY what i mean.

Obviously i know all of you liked it and QUITE liked it, joking aside though is my review pretty objective or would you say its biased in anyway?

TROD.

I have nothing against the dialogs in War of the Worlds, just the plot

Sir Calumn
19-07-2005, 05:28:PM
War of the Worlds was so poor that only the fact Steven Speilburg was at the helm managed to save it and make it entertaining. It's strange because, although not a fan of SciFi, I quite enjoyed the book but in the film it just seems silly. The dialogue is totally basic and everything explained very poorly - but, as I said, Speilburg managed to get enough out of it and to do enough with the effects to make it worthwhile. But anyway, why are we talking about WotW's here? :p
