New Superman Movie Finally Has Its Man Of Steel
Soap star Brandon Routh nabs role.

A member of the MTV family will soon be leaping over tall buildings in a single bound — 25-year-old Brandon Routh, who played "Wade" on the MTV soap opera "Undressed," will star as the Man of Steel in the upcoming Superman movie.
Bros. announced on Friday (October 22) that the largely unknown actor has been confirmed to star in the film, slated for a summer 2006 release.
"It was always my absolute intention to hire an unknown for this role," the film's director, Bryan Singer, said in a statement. "Brandon is an extremely fine actor who possesses the physical qualifications of Clark Kent/ Superman. But he also embodies the legacy and history of this character in a way that makes me certain he's the right choice."
So who is Brandon Routh? His short résumé includes a few guest spots on shows like "Will & Grace" and "Gilmore Girls," but he's most known for his stint as Seth on ABC's "One Life to Live." Known to his friends and family as "B.J.," he grew up in Norwalk, Iowa, where he graduated from high school in 1998. He was active in both sports and music during high school, and had planned a career in writing after attending the University of Iowa, but then went into modeling instead in 1999. Modeling soon turned into acting; Christina Aguilera's video "What a Girl Wants" is one of his first credits.
The Superman project has had a long list of potential candidates, not only to play the Man of Steel, but also to write and direct his latest adventure, referred to as both "Superman V" and "Superman Returns." Nicolas Cage, Brendan Fraser, Josh Hartnett, Jim Caviezel and even Tom Welling of "Smallville" have vied for the role, which has subtly shifted in the hands of
Abrams to current scribes Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris ("X2"), who recently turned in their final script. Though Tim Burton was originally set to direct, that job, too, has changed many hands — Brett Ratner and McG were once attached to the project — until Bryan Singer ultimately landed the job.
One of the main changes Singer made once he signed on was to make the commitment to cast an unknown. He came across a screen test Routh did with McG in June, which is when rumors first linked the actor to the project. Singer viewed those tapes and met with Routh in August.
"We respect and appreciate the intense interest that our fans around the world have in Superman," Jeff Robinov, President of Production for Warner Bros. Pictures, said of the casting decision, "and we went everywhere in search of a talented actor who would represent his look, character and presence. We think Brandon is a gifted young performer who can re-energize this iconic character and excite new audiences about the legend of Superman."
The as-yet-untitled Superman film is expected to begin principal photography in Australia early next year. No other casting decisions have been announced.
The last actor to play the Man of Steel on the big screen, Christopher Reeve, died on October 10 of heart failure (see " 'Superman' Star Christopher Reeve Dies At 52").

Spurs4Life 23-10-2004, 05:42:AM Ahhh this film definately wont be as good as the first ever Superman film. You can already read the future for this film. It will have a poor script, most of the film will have too much special effects (especially the fakeness of when Superman is flying because of the annoying cheap CGI used in Spiderman), people will also have endless comparisons about Reeves and Routh, people will be saying Routh is not as good as Reeves for sure, because Reeves is irreplaceable. This maybe a good film, but will be a distant 3rd place to the first two Superman movies.

manutd4eva 23-10-2004, 05:55:AM Because there have been two movies already, might just prevent it from selling really big at the box office, and some people would then argue that is because the movie is crap.

Well, as I said the script will be crap, this is what is on IMDB:
--------------
The classic superhero is reborn on the silver screen by with this bold reinvention. Kal-El, son of Jor-El, the ruler of the benevolent Kandorians of the Planet Krypton, is sent to Earth by his father to escape the approaching armies of the evil Kata-Zor. Having landed on his new planet, he is adopted by the Kents, an earnest Kansas couple that teach him kindness and morality. He soon realizes that destiny has in store for him greater things, and that his unique heritage has given him almost unlimited strength and powers. Upon reaching adulthood, he travels to the city of Metropolis, and begins work at the Daily Planet. When disaster strikes, he dons the uniform sent to him by his biological father, and becomes Superman, hero to the oppressed. But it isn't long until his heritage catches up with him, and all of his adopted planet will be caught in the crossfire.
---------
As I said before, we are now in the year 2004 and films nowadays are taking advantage of the cheap way of making films by using CGI. This films plot is ideal for an all out CGI war between Krypton and Earth. Also Reeves in almost everyones eyes is irreplaceable, he was the perfect Superman inside and outside the movie role. Does my points still seem :| now Steaua ;)

and I like Superman better than Batman but the first 2 Batman movies are better than the first 2 Superman movies.
indeed  Tim Burton
and about the CGI, I thought that Neo's flying in Reloaded and Revolutions was flawless. and those guys are probably doing the FX in the Superman movies too since its the same studio (WB)
and about the story, another good thing they're doing, is that this movie is not a 'new begginning' story for Superman. this movie will take place AFTER Superman 2 they say. something like that Superman left the Earth and now is back or something.
that IMDB plot is a supposed one, but its not done yet.
and so I have high hopes for this movie, but the new Batman movie, just like with the originals, will own it (Y)

aftab 23-10-2004, 03:56:PM imo Batman is better than Superman. the only reason why because first of all his disguise is really stupid. Now hes superman and then when he wears glasses and a suit hes a reporter... OMG I cant tell the difference. lol. and also every villian knows supermans weakness... Kryptonite. so if u have lots of "K" hes basically dead. even more intresting he was born from the planet kryptonite. instead of being immune to it hes helpless in front of it. Batman on the other hand is not does not have "Super" powers. hes like any other person.... ok ok maybe he has more cash in his pockets than anyone else but still that doesnt effect the way he sloves his problems. Hes smart! and has cool gadets to help him. anyway enough of this ranting im waiting for the new batman movie thats going to come up next year(maybe? im not sure) and hopefully its going to be better than the previous ones. I waiting to see how these two movies come up.

Yup, I found that anoyin` too. Just a pair of glasses suddenly everyone can`t see the simillarity between Kent and Superman . . .
There`s only one good Batman movie. The original one. He`s dark, a bit psycho, and doesn`t talk much.
Hakeem 23-10-2004, 10:30:PM but its not like he's doing press conferences all the time. nobody sees him close enough to tell the difference, and nobody knows Clark Kent either.

That plot that someone quoted earlier on is just the plot from the original....
I think itll be stupid if they ignore the events from 3 and 4. Even if those movies werent that great (I didnt mind them as far as superman movies went tho, I liked 3, with the whole kryptonite gone wrong thing, and also the split personality thing-and 4 was ok with a supervillain, someone almost supermans equal), they should continue on from those 2, otherwise it is hard to say what has happened and what hasnt. There wasnt any major plot lines in 3 and 4 anyway, so it shouldnt make too much difference.
The things I dont like are shows that change the superman story...Smallville has done it a little, and so did Lois and Clarke...
Spurs4Life 25-12-2004, 09:26:PM It's now finally in production, after finding the new Superman, Brandon Routh: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0746125/
Plot
Superman is blamed for the pain of the people and the destruction of Metropolis in the wake of the attacks by General Zod, Non, and Ursa. In response to his new unpopularity, he exiles himself in the Fortress of Solitude. Six years have passed, and a new threat emerges. Superman must leave his exile and battle the oncoming threat, as he is the only one who can. In this film, Superman Returns.
I'm really happy that Warner Bros aren't going to just remake the first Superman movie and the director is going to keep the original theme music by John Williams, so really this film is going to be a semi-sequel.
Use this thread to talk about the movie and give you're opinions on who should play Lois Lane and Lex Luther (rumoured to be played by Kevin Spacey). By the looks of it, Singer (director) picked the perfect actor to play Superman, he is a complete unknown like Reeve was when he played Superman: The Movie.

SlayerDeuS 26-12-2004, 12:05:AM Spacey is in the running for Lex Luthor. I think he is a very good choice to play the role. Singer will not disappoint even though it seems like one of those typical superhero flicks.

Callan 26-12-2004, 12:37:PM Singer, come one, the Usual Suspects, X-men... why is this going to be sh!t, everyone who thinks this is going to be so bad is a f**k head. Singer is great. This film will be good, I don't see the problem with making a new superman film... oh 'it's just for money' seriously, how do you know what it's for, possibly, ENTERTAINMENT?
I hope Spacey gets the part, he is a good actor, and he will sh!t on you all.
Sink down... sheesh, come on, it's Superman, it's great.
I hope this movie is fantastic, I think it will be, I don't give a sh!t what anyone says, this will be good.
I cannot wait. It will be better than spiderman, but frankly, that was nothing special in my books, certainly no original 1989 batman, which in my opinion is still the best superhero film.
Hakeem 26-12-2004, 11:34:PM I agree, Singer has made awesome movies, and he's done the Xmen movies which are good (1st one) and excellent (2nd), plus The Usual Suspects.
and better yet, he casted a total unknown instead of getting a known actor which tells us that its not about making money or else they would've cast someone we know ;)
Mikey 28-12-2004, 05:46:AM I dont like this. If it was up to me, they'd let Smallville run its course on TV and than cast Tom Welling as Superman and Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor. Couldve been a great transition. Oh well.
Things i like about the movie:
- Casting an unknown for Superman role. Itd be awkward to have an established actor playing this role.
- Bryan Singer directing it(Y). Im really happy they didnt get somebody like McG or a similar "all flash" director do this.
- A new superman movie. One movie that a remake would actually benefit(Y).
(by the way, whats going on with hollywood, whys everything a remake these days? Cant think of any new ideas? I dont mind if its done right though)
Bad things:
- if youre not gonna use my Smallville idea, at least let the show finish before you release the movie. Its gonna be ****e having two Superman things going on at once. (N)
- Now Bryan Singer isnt doing X-men 3:(
Hakeem 28-12-2004, 06:47:AM yep, the whole Smallville is kind of weird. maybe they should wait until it ends, I dont know.
thing is, not everybody is happy with Smallville, so using it as a background for the movie would be a mistake.
but about X3, if Joss Whedon (Buffy, Angel, Firefly and the upcoming movie Serenity) is doing it then it could be awesome. of course, it'll all depend on the cast, if they change them, it'll be bad (N)
Mikey 29-12-2004, 06:36:AM a problem i see for X3 is too much characters. Like i said, everybody except halle berry, which isnt such a loss.
Looking at Wheden's past project, i dont think X3 is in great hands. Those 3 shows were cheesy, and only a select type of people liked them. Hope he proves me wrong or they get someone else. I'd like to see Oliver Stone or Tarantino do a comic book movie(Y).
it'll be ****, all of the new 'action' hero movies have been ****.

SlayerDeuS 01-02-2005, 06:24:AM I don't agree wth Kate Bosworth either, however casting virtual unknowns for the parts of Jimmy Olsen and Superman is a good move, Singer is building around Spacey.
Hakeem 01-02-2005, 12:28:PM well, Ive never seen Bosworth as a brunetter, so I cant imagine how she'll look. but I do think she has great capacity and she has acting range as she showed in Beyond the Sea.

why are people so bothered about this movie? Yet another superhero remake movie. Now the TRANSFORMERS remake scheduled for 2007 is what we should all be wetting ourselves about :D

Transformers... I had all their toy gadgets. This should be great. However, there's no way they'll make it a serious comic movie, like X-men, the Hulk and Spiderman. No way. It will be as cheesy as the Fantastic Four, and the 1st Batman movies.
Hopefully they'll find a way around that. I despise cheesy SuperHero movies.
As for Superman, my fav superhero, I have very low expectations for the movie. The new superman looks very weak on the eyes. Reeves was non-replacable.
However, I'm eager to know how they'll do the whole 'Superman was gone and is now back' plot.
Plus there's so little room for special effects. X-men was a special effect and graphical jackpot.
Axolote 06-06-2006, 07:50:PM I dont like Superman...he is too Super, no conflict, no tragic past...but i think Lex Luthor is one of the greatest villians in comic book history.
Kevin Spacey looks great as Lex....
modena_10 28-06-2006, 07:37:AM just saw it and i have nothing but praise for the movie. i really enjoyed it.
no tragic past
So his home planet blowing up and killing his family is not tragic???
watch it just now. awesome movie, like it so much despite the ending is a bit poor (Y)(Y)
Callan 29-06-2006, 02:10:PM So his home planet blowing up and killing his family is not tragic???
Exactly what I was thinking ;)

Just saw the film today - pretty awesome. Not to sure about the acting... but it was really nice to see Superman back on the big screen. This film certainly didn't fail. Probably one of the best superhero/comic book films I have seen... right up there with MIB and Batman Begins.
Axolote 29-06-2006, 02:43:PM So his home planet blowing up and killing his family is not tragic???
OK, LESS tragic :)
The_Knight 29-06-2006, 05:05:PM I thought the movie was pretty much Excellent. You couldn't expect more, it's Superman.
The atmosphere of the 1st movie is pretty much prevalent. Starting with the same blue flying credits at the start of the movie, with the busy offices of Daily Planet, the cigar smoking boss, and the ever so clumsy Clark Kent.
This movie is merely an introduction to a better new and improved series of Superman movies, and it does it great. All the characters of the 1st movie are brought back to life with amazing acting. I was a bit suspicious of Brandon for the 1st 10 mins of the movie, but then he captured the Superman role pretty damn good. I even thought he did a better job with Clark Kent. Kevin Spacey was Perfect. And as goood as Gene Hackman was, Kevin kinda delivers a more convincing Lex Luthor.
I was pretty much curious about how they'll reintroduce the whole "Superman is back" plot, but they did it marvelously. And the opening scene of the plane rescue is amazing.
The 2006 special effects are not over-used at all, if anything, they could be considered under used. I loved the way Clark kept "x-ray" looking at Lois as she left the room, moved on to the corridor, went into the elevator, and went up. That's a classy use of the effect IMO :)
The only setback IMO was the pretty calm and slow ending, for such an action packed movie. That was a dumb call by the writers... I mean the final scene is what people remember once the movie ends, and it's what people build their impressions upon. They could have shown a brief scene for an idea of an upcoming sequel... but to end it with the whole "Superman flying in the skies" scene, was pretty weak for the rest of the movie IMO.
But otherwise great great movie, just the perfect length, and the scenes are spectacular. Looking forward to the next parts. I just hope they choose a really really GREAT plot for the next movie, coz in this one, it wasn't at all about the plot, it was mainly about reintroducing the characters and atmosphere over again. But with the next movie, the plot has to be as strong as it gets.
And as I said, you couldn't expect more, it's Superman. (unlike X-men with all its possibilities and potential) And it was a job well done.
SlayerDeuS 03-07-2006, 08:04:AM Just saw it. I liked it alot for large parts of the movie like SPOILER: when Superman was falling out of the sky from space and also from off the cliff into the ocean, the entire movie theater was absolutely silent, enthralled was everyone. The movie theater was the quietest I had ever seen a movie since LOTR.
The movie was the perfect length too, it was long but never was it boring. The end was sorta blah, to certainly set up for a series of films. Sets and graphics were awesome. One funny moment tho was when the character who played Harold and Kumar (Kal Penn) was making his evil faces and beating up Superman, I couldn't help but think of that H&K scene with him and the giant bag of ganja. Very good film in my opinion.
Pontiakos 05-07-2006, 07:29:PM Wow this movie was soooo boring and sooooo long.
There was no dialogue, i.e. a script.
Just superman flying around Manhattan and around the world.
I know Superman can fly, and he's strong and fast and blah blah blah. I knew that from the 1980s movies.
This was just another Superman movie.
and it sucked.
Off the subject
I saw this on July 4th.
During the movie someone in the movie theater said.
...."Hey how come he doesn't ask anyone were the twin towers are?...."
He got his ass kicked.
Fernandez 06-07-2006, 02:02:PM Great movie, but the ending sucked for me. Enjoyed it overall. (Y)
Spoiler: Anyone enjoyed the little cameo by Richard Bransen?
TOON ARMY 20-07-2006, 08:29:PM Went to see this last night.

Virgo 13-08-2006, 07:06:PM the word mediocre was invented to describe this film.
