Babayaro Completes Move From Chelsea

NEWCASTLE United confirmed today that following negotitaions with Celestine Babayaro, agreement has been reached that he will join Newcastle United on January 1 2005.

The player will be transferred from Chelsea for an undisclosed sum.

Newcastle United record their thanks to everybody involved at Chelsea for their co-operation and goodwill.

Under FAPL rules, the player will be eligibile for selection from Wednesday January 5. He also qualifies to appear in the FA Cup and UEFA Cup for Newcastle United this season, the latter being because although nominated as a substitute, he has not taken to the field for Chelsea in European competition this season.

JEAN Alain Boumsong will become a Newcastle United player after a fee was agreed with Rangers on Friday.

The French defender will sign a five and a half year contract at St. James Park after passing a medical on Friday morning, and will become the second signing this week following the capture of Celestine Babayaro, who has agreed a three and a half year deal.

Both players will be available to play for their new club starting with the FA Cup game with Yeading next weekend.

Boumsong, born in Cameroon, started his career with Le Havre before moving to Auxerre in 1999 and then onto Rangers in pre-season.

He worked his way through the French under-21 squad before making his full debut for les Bleus in the Confederations Cup game with Japan in 2003.

Jean Alain was in France's squad for the European Championships in Portugal during the summer.

He will wear the number 6 jersey at St. James' Park, taking over that shirt from Jonathan Woodgate who left for Real Madrid earlier this season.

Boumsong Excited By United Move
EAN Alain Boumsong is looking forward to next weekend's FA Cup clash with Yeading - even though it means he will miss out on one of the biggest derby clashes in world football.

Boumsong is expected to make his Magpies debut against the Ryman League outfit at Loftus Road - the same day his old club Rangers take on arch-rivals Celtic in the Scottish Cup.

"I know it does not have the same ring about it as Rangers against Celtic but it's a big big match as far as I am concerned," said the United new boy.

http://www.nufc.premiumtv.co.uk/javaImages/9/c6/0,,10278~443913,00.jpg
"It is a real joy for me to play for another big club like Newcastle United and that's why I have signed such a long contract. But I won't be completely happy until I can get out there on the pitch.

"I want to train with my new team-mates as soon as possible and get to know them and that's why I have stayed overnight in Newcastle instead of going back to Glasgow.

"I'll be at St James' Park today for a match today for the first time since Rangers played there in the pre-season tournament. I played against Alan Shearer that day and I learned so much.

"I really appreciated that game and I'm proud that I will now be playing alongside Alan Shearer."

Boumsong is delighted to be at United now, though he has apologised to the Rangers fans for leaving the club only a few months after moving to Ibrox.

"I would like to apologise to the public at Ibrox for leaving them so soon and I hope they won't be angry with me," h added.

"I have been told that Newcastle are going to play there next summer and I am hoping there will not be too much anger directed at me."

Meanwhile United chairman Freddy Shepherd has praised Jean-Alain's agent Willie McKay for donating part of his commission from the deal to the Asian Flood Appeal.

Mr Shepherd said: "Agents have had a lot of bad publicity lately but this is a magnificent gesture from Willie McKay."

Boss Excited By Transfer Activity
GRAEME Souness says he is excited by the transfer activity taking place at St. James' Park after a busy few days strenthening his squad.

Celestine Babayaro arrived at Gallowgate from Chelsea on Wednesday, while Jean Alain Boumsong was undergoing a medical on Friday after a move from Rangers was agreed.

And there could be more arrivals on the way, with Souness admitting he had made an enquiry for Manchester City's former Magpie, Sylvain Distin.

"I am excited and the fans should be as well," said Souness.

"We're strenthening the squad, and with Babayaro in we're now happy to get Boumsong.

"We've been chasing him for a while, and I'm certain he will prove to be a tremendous acquistion for us.

"It's an area we need to strengthen, and he will do that. He's a very talented player who will boost us. That is why the chairman is prepared to spend so much money on him."

And referring to Distin, the manager added: "I think it is public knowledge now that we have made an enauiry about Sylvain Distin, and hopefully I can confirm that without upsetting Kevin (Keegan).

"You could throw a whole host of names at me, because I have had a whole host of names thrown at me from agents, journalists and friends of players.

"We are actively looking to improve the squad, and as I said I think there are exciting times ahead.

"We're not to far away from getting it right, we already have some talented players here and with some new additions I think we can look forward to moving up the table in the New Year.

"With a bit of luck in games, and players coming back from injuries added to new signings, I'm confident we will quickly start winning football matches again."

Referee: Rob Styles

GRAEME Souness named the same side that were beaten by Arsenal in midweek for the New Year's Day game with Birmingham at St. James' Park.

Alan Shearer was ruled out with a tight calf after initially being pencilled in to return from a thigh injury, while there was no place in the 16 for Stephen Carr who was also not ready to return.

United kicked off attacking the Gallowgate End, and Bellamy won a corner on the right two minutes into the game but Robert's deep flag kick was too strong for Taylor at the back post.

Bramble then picked out bellamy on the right with a great diagonal ball, but the Welshman's cross was cut out by Tebily as Ameobi tried to get into space inside the box.

On six minutes United took the lead, and it was bellamy who was the architect with a great ball in from the right after teasing Tebily, and it was Ameobi who was well positioned to nod the ball home from close range.

There was a huge scramble on 10 minutes when Robert sent a low ball across the face of goal, but Upson blocked the ball on the line and after Bellamy and Ameobi tried to wrestle the ball back the referee blew for a free kick to the visitors.

Taylor then tipped a Bowyer strike around his post for a corner after Savage slipped to let the former Leeds midfielder break away, and the goalkeeper gathered Robert's inswinger.

Bellamy was twisting Tebily inside out in the opening exchanges, and he won another corner off the full back on 16 minutes, but Bowyer's delivery went straight out of play.

Taylor then pulled off another good save, diving low to his left to tip away Bowyer's effort after Robert slid a through ball to him, but again the corner was claimed by the goalkeeper.

Morrison won Birmingham's first corner on 23 minutes, and after united only managed to clear as far as the egde of the box the visitors won another corner on the opposite side which Ameobi nodded away from the near post.

City made a change on 25 minutes with Julian Gray replacing Tebily. It was uncl;ear whether Tebily was injured, but he had been given a torrid time by Bellamy on the Newcastle right and when the change was made Lazaridis went to left back with Gray on the left side of midfield.

Heskey saw a weak header easily saved by Given, then Ameobi's blushes were spared by the linesman's flag when he failed to connect with Dyer's pass three yards from goal on 27 minutes.

Savage got the first booking of the match for a late lunge on Bernard on the left touchline on 35 minutes, then heskey was booked on 42 minutes for a trip on Jenas just outsode the entre circle.

A minute before the break United made it 2-0, with Bowyer slotting the ball home from Robert's cross after Melchiot slipped in the right back spot to give the Frenchman time and space to slide the ball across the middle.

After a quiet opening to the second half, Ameobi carved out a chance chesting down a ball from Bramble and with his second touch volleyd just over from 25 yards.

Lazaridis then broke down the left flank on 55 miuntes before crossing to Morrison in the United penalty area, however the Birmingham striker's header was tippped over for a corner by his Ireland team mate Given.

It was Morrison again five minutes later turning Hughes on thr left hand side of thre box, but the forwards shot was held by Given.

Moments later Robert shot over from the edge of the box after a right side corner by Bowyer. That was the Frenchman's last touch as he was replaced by Milner on 63 miuntes.

On 64 minutes Heskey pulled a goal back fireing home from just inside the box after being set up by strike partner Morrison.

Savage had a shot saved by Given a minute after City levelled, then Anderton won a corner off Bernard but Upson could not keep his shot down from the former England midfielder's corner kick.

On 76 minutes Charles N'zogbia replaced Bellamy who looked to have picked up an injury. N'Zogbia moved to the left wing with Milner partnering Ameobi in atack as United reverted to 4-4-2.

United had a good spell of pressure with Milner having two low crossess cleared and Dyer was crowded out on the edge of the area as United went looking for a third goal.

Bernard was booked for handball on 81 minutes, then moments later Melchiot headed straight at Shay Given as United failed to clear.

Then on 83 miuntes Anderton shot high over the bar after good forward play by Morrison., then with just over six minutes to play Birmingham made their third and final chance with Dwight Yorke replacing Cunningham.

In the 89th miunte Dyerr was desperartly unluckly to see his 18 yard drive bounce back off the bar, then moments later Bowyer drove a shot just wide after some great work by Jenas.

Two minutes of time were added on at the end but United held on to take the vital three points.

indeed. He might not be in the best form of his life... but he is still a class player and a high profile one. We need him at the club.
He's pretty unlucky with injuries so far this season, and has been forced into action lately due to Shearer's absence.

I definitly hope he has a few years of good football with us.

Shearer scores the 400th of his career. It looks like a long shot but i hope he can beat Jackie Milburn's 200 goal club record before he retires at the end of the season.

As for the game we won it Newcastle style, the hard way.

It's still disappointing that we can dominate the game like we did, and go into halftime only up 2-1, when southampton only had 1 shot on target for the half... and we had all the chances, but either sum1 puts it over the bar, the keeper makes a good save, or etc.... we just need the goals cos it can and will come back to haunt us in games against beta teams who arent 2nd last...

Newcastle awaiting Bellamy offers:

"Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd has revealed Craig Bellamy can leave if the club receive the right offer.
Liverpool have denied any interest Bellamy despite losing Florent Sinama Pongolle to injury but Aston Villa and Manchester City have been linked.

However, only Stoke City have made a firm enquiry for the 25-year-old.

"There's been one enquiry with a view to a loan deal, but there has not been one major club interested in signing him," Shepherd told the Journal.

He added: "If something does happen in that respect then we'll consider the offer."

However, any potential move will have to be hurried through as the January transfer window is drawing to a close.

Shepherd continued: "Nobody is kicking my door down and the fax machine is quiet.

"He's damaged his reputation - hopefully, not beyond repair - but it's all gone very quiet and there have been no serious enquiries and no firm offers."

If I were the coach of newcastle, crap like Dyer and Bellamy will be out.

How can a player be this defiant and even went as far as insulting his coach on TV be allowed to stay.

And u wonder why u are languishing in 12th and Chelsea is Number 1. look at what Mourinho did to Mutu.

Compare what is comparable...
its easy to throw out a player like Mutu, who's struggling to score, has a seven month ban over his head... and when you have 4 other strikers.
Bellamy has been Newcastle's best player and most devoted servant over the last two years.

The whole story is that hes been taken for a ride by the management. And with two big egos like him and Souness it will be hard to get along all the time. This should have been delt with privately.
Some might argue that letting Bellamy stay would be admitting player power... but both sides can come to terns with this whole situation im sure.

TOON ARMY

Bellamy's just one of countless overpaid players who think they're above the law. At the end of the day Souness is the manager, if he puts Bellamy on the wing then so be it, even if we the fans don't like it. This would never of happened 20-30 years ago. Players showed a great deal more respect for their managers. Would Clough and the like have stood for this behaviour from their players? No the player would get a thick ear.

Bellamy's a great player and has been committed to the club 100% up until now but however good a player is there comes a line which cannot be crossed.

Now i hope Bellamy learns from his mistake and gets his head down to do what he does best, his football. Hopefully in the black and white shirt.

Robert about to sign for Bolton subject to a medical: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/b/bolton_wanderers/4085674.stm
Glad to see the back of him, shame we've made such a loss out of him. If anyone will get the best out of him big Sam will.

As for players coming in it's believed Chelsea have agreed a fee for Scot Parker however there are fears that Parker may be off loaded to Spurs as some form of reconciliation for the Arneson row. We don’t want to be missing out on Parker, just what we need in the mid-field, a tough ball winning, eye for the goal mid-fielder.

Don't worry about a lack of signings thus far. The transfer market has started quite slowly like it usually does. Players are coming back off holiday soon and we have until the end of August to buy players.

Players we're strongly linked with:
Parker (discussing personal terms, Chelsea accepted a bid)
Emre (Bargain for Ģ4 million)
Daniel Van Buyten (quality center half, good replacement for O'Brien)

I think we'll see a couple of new forwards brought in too. In the mean time i would give Chopra a run out in the intertoto, the lad is a great prospect for the future. We could with a left-winger too, not quite sure who though.

isnt emre our left midfield answer? cos her certainly aint gonna start in the middle is he? since i'd assume it'd b jenas and parker, with dyer at right mid... emre on the left? doesnt soound so bad...

robert is in talks with both bolton and pompey, f365 say parker should b a newy player within 24 hours, and also bowyer is in talks with Brum... he should leave imo...

as for van buyten... i dont see it happening, considering newy denied eva speaking to him, and the deal looks dead in the water... but as for an OB replacement, considering OB is no more than a bench player, he wouldnt really replace him, we just need to find a partner for JAB, cos Taylor will b able to do the backing up the two of them, and i spose if they r injured/suspended bramble could play... that'd b a decent set of 4 cb's... but yes, we will need to sign a new striker...

Parker is a Magpie

http://www.nufc.premiumtv.co.uk/javaImages/ff/d0/0,,10278~577791,00.jpg

SCOTT Parker has completed his move from Chelsea to Newcastle United after successfully completing a medical on Tyneside on Wednesday.

Parker, who joined Chelsea from Charlton 18 months ago, becomes Graeme Souness' first signing of the summer and admits he can't wait to kick-start his career at Gallowgate after a frustrating time at Stamford Bridge.

"I'm delighted to be joining Newcastle," Parker told nufc.co.uk.

"As soon as Chelsea made it clear they were prepared to let me leave, I was keen on this move.

"I have played here a few times, and I know how big the club is. I was very impressed with the manager, he was a major factor behind my decision to come here.

"I was also impressed with the chairman, and I just get the right vibes about the whole place. I can't wait to get started now."

He added: "It has been frustrating for me at Chelsea. I was a key figure at Charlton and playing every week, and then all of a sudden at Chelsea I wasn't a regular and had to get used to being on the sidelines.

"I'm not content with just sitting on the bench and playing a bit part. It was hard for me last season when Chelsea were doing so well and I wasn't really part of it

"I want to play, I have a hunger and a desire and maybe that is even stronger now because of what happened to me at Stamford Bridge.

"Chelsea is a club where trophies are part of the make-up. I have a desire to win things, and I feel that at Newcastle I can do that.

"The manager has given me a huge lift, I feel wanted again and I know I can do a good job here at Newcastle United."

Chairman Freddy Shepherd was delighted to tie up the signing of Parker, and says he will be a valuable addition to the squad.

"Scott has been our main target for a while, and we're delighted that he has chosen to join us," said Mr Shepherd.

"He is our first signing of the summer, and will be a valuable addition to our squad. He is still young but has a lot of experience, and we welcome him to Newcastle and look forward to seeing him in a black and white shirt."

"But that has made me a stronger person, and I don't leave Chelsea believing that I've failed. I have learned a lot there and developed as a player, and I'm confident you will see that at Newcastle next season.

"I'm not content with just sitting on the bench and playing a bit part. It was hard for me last season when Chelsea were doing so well and I wasn't really part of it

Souey to decide Bellamy fate
Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd says the St James' Park door is not closed to Craig Bellamy, but insists the decision on whether the Welsh firebrand plays for The Magpies again is down to Graeme Souness.

Bellamy appeared to seal his Newcastle fate when criticising Souness in a Sky Sports News interview, paving the way for his loan move to Celtic.

The flying forward was a big hit in Glasgow, but The Bhoys failed to exercise the option they had to sign the player and his future is now up in the air.

Aston Villa, Birmingham and Blackburn have all been linked with summer bids, but no deal has been agreed and Bellamy is due to report back for training on July 4.

Bellamy's on-pitch qualities were sorely missed on Tyneside in the second half of the season and Shepherd would appear to be ready to bury the hatchet, but it would appear as if Souness will have the final say.

"You will have to ask the manager that one, that is up to Graeme, but there is a long way to go yet before the start of the season," Shepherd told BBC Five Live.

"Everybody will tell you I am a forgiving chap; whether or not he plays for Newcastle again is up to the manager."

Commenting on whether Bellamy will return for pre-season training, Shepherd added: "I think he is lying on a beach at this moment, and good luck to him.

"That is what is happening to him at the moment and he is due back on July 4, so we will see what happens then.

"But in football, anything can happen."

I really hope they can put it behind them because it's gona be hard to replace a talented player like bellas, but if souness has such an ego that he can't forget and forgive then he will leave.

Magpies in Figo talks

Sky Sports News understand Newcastle are in talks to sign Real Madrid star Luis Figo.

Figo looks set to leave Real Madrid this summer as he does not appear to be in coach Wanderley Luxemburgo's first-team plans.

The Portuguese ace lost his place in the side at the back end of last season with Michael Owen squeezing him out of the side.

Figo still has 12 months left on his contract at Real, but he has indicated he will not be happy if he is forced to sit on the bench.

The news has alerted a number of clubs across Europe with Liverpool, Bolton and Valencia all linked with the skilful winger.

It is believed that Figo has instructed his advisors to help find a new club and it appears England could be his destination.

Figo has never hidden his desire to try his luck in The Premiership and Newcastle could be ready to offer him that opportunity.

Magpies boss Graeme Souness is keen to bring in high-profile signings after a disappointing campaign last term and it is believed he is in negotiations with Figo.

Souness will be hoping he can persuade the former Barcelona star to make the move to Tyneside and his possible arrival would provide a major lift ahead of the new season.

I doubt that Figo will go to Newcastle because of their absence from europe, and i can't imagine that Bobby Robson would give them a decent recommendation after the way he was treated.

IMO Man U is more likely with the heavy Portugese influence their.

Man u don't want him, all big premiership clubs have turned him down and he don't wana go anywhere but premiership, and he is quoted on sky sports news as sayin he wants 2 join us so ...

Vinnie Jones
20-06-2005, 06:17:PM
All the big premiership clubs turn him down? Sure...where did you hear this? Do you have any sources? Itīs quite the opposite. Btw he said he would love to play in the premiership and not that he would only play in the premiership. He has offers from top clubs from all over Europe and you think that he would come for Newcastle just because he wants to play in the premiership? Thatīs rubbish. First of all i doubt that they can pay his wages and second i already read on the portuguese newspapers, that one of the pre requisits for any club that wants to sign him, is that they must be in european competitions. If i was you i would lose your expectations of seeing Figo in Newcastle, itīs not going to happen.

Adriano7
20-06-2005, 07:33:PM
well i was watchin sky sports news and it said his agent has visited the likes of arsenal manu, chelsea, liverpool and they are not interested mainly because of his age and wages, he has turned down the idea of playing in france, and doesn't want 2 go to qatar(who offered the most). Valencia were favorite but madrid are reluctant 2 sell afterpasst history of transfers negotiations. also if a club in spain want him they will have to pay a fee , whereas madrid will allow othe teams to have him on a free if they match wage requests.

I aint all that bothered because i think he is past it and would just be good experience but don't say newcastle aint got a chance because at the moment it is claimed we are leading the chase and a deal could be imminent.

Adriano7

Bellamy, bags of talent but i'm afraid the attitude is totally wrong. The amount of chances we've given him. His he worth another chance or do we cash in on him? 60% of me says the later of the two.

Figo's age is a concern. Might get one season out of him at best. Probably not worth it to be honest.

Vinnie Jones
20-06-2005, 08:01:PM
You are lying. English media has as much credibility as Fox News. His agent doesnīt have to visit anyone. Clubs chase Figo not the other way around. He doesnīt offer himself to any club and specially not a club like Newcastle. What can he get and achieve in Newcastle? You havenīt won a title in decades. Donīt act so goddamn high and mighty. He has been in top flight for more than a decade, been one of the most important players in both Real Madrid and Barįaīs history and you think that he would conceed on anything just to go to Newcastle? Give me a break. Oh and donīt worry about what player you would rather get because by the looks of things, you wonīt get any of them.

Yeah he is old and lacks pace but it seems to me that Newcastle want him right? God forbid that Figo would join your almighty Newcastle, Toon Army, he would be just jumping into the bandwagon of a club who is natural winner. Get off your high horse. Even old he is better and achieved waaaaaaaaay more than any player in your team. You should use that criteria with Shearer too because he is so young and fast.

He hasnīt lost most of his ability, he compensates the lack of explosition power from the past, with better ball distribution and wiser pitch movements. Remember he lost his place on Real Madrid because of "politics" and not because he wasnīt performing well. He still has it on a slightly lesser note but he still has it. He has returned recently to our Nt and he has been great. He has loads of experience now and that can be equally an important aspect in a player and his impact on the team. Kinda like Shearer. My remark about Shearer wasnīt serious, i know how he rejected Manchester United to join the Toon. Anyways this bickering wonīt get us anywhere, letīs just wait and see what happens. If he does join Newcastle i wish him best of luck to him and his new team.

Emre touches down in Newcastle
Inter Milan midfielder Emre arrived on Tyneside tonight to tie up a move to Newcastle as Graeme Souness closed in on his second summer signing.

Emre: Protracted transfer. (NigelFrench/Empics)
The 24-year-old Turkey international was met at Newcastle International Airport by the Scot and coach Dean Saunders and whisked off to prepare for a medical tomorrow after the Magpies finally made a breakthrough in their protracted pursuit.

Emre is expected to complete his move to St James' Park tomorrow to join Ģ6.5million Scott Parker among the new faces in Souness' rapidly evolving squad.

'I am so happy because Newcastle is a very big team and for me, the manager is a very important person,' he told the club's official website.

Souness was cautiously optimistic as he prepared to close the deal.

'We have worked hard to get him here,' he said. 'Hopefully we can tie everything up and get him signed as he will be a real addition to the squad.

'We are just going over the final details. There are a few things still to be decided, but I am confident we can do that.

'He will bring a bit of grit and determination and he is a real flair player as well. He works very hard, he has been in Italy for a number of years and has obviously learned a great deal of his trade out there.

'He will do well and he is keen to play English football. He sees it as a type of football that will suit him.

'We have still to tie up a few loose ends, but when he has signed, I will be a very delighted man.'

Newcastle have been on the former Galatasaray player's trail for several weeks since it became apparent that Inter were prepared to let him go despite the fact that he had two years remaining on his contract.

They had to fight off stiff competition from Everton, while Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United were at various points linked with him after he made just 19 Serie A appearances last season.

However, the Magpies emerged as the leading contenders after Souness flew off to hold preliminary talks with the midfielder, although with his wages, reported to amount to be around Ģ90,000 a week, proving a problem, it was not until last Thursday that they tabled an undisclosed bid.

By that point, Emre had already signalled his intention to head for St James', and by then it was a matter of sorting out the numbers.

It is no coincidence that Newcastle's offer was received at the San Siro as striker Craig Bellamy underwent a medical in Blackburn, completing his move to Ewood Park hours later to release a further Ģ5million in fee and Ģ2million a year in wages.

Emre's arrival would represent something of a coup for Souness, who has offloaded six men so far this summer - Bellamy, Patrick Kluivert, Laurent Robert, Andy O'Brien, Aaron Hughes and Darren Ambrose - but until now, has drafted in only Parker.

Providing that there are no last minute hitches, he will now turn his attention to Fulham forward Luis Boa Morte and his search for reinforcements in central defence and up front.

The Magpies will launch their campaign on Sunday when they face Dubinica in Slovakia in the first leg of their Intertoto Cup third round tie, although Souness has already indicated that neither Emre nor Parker will be involved.

However, having seen today's draw for the semi-finals and final put them on a collision course with Deportivo la Coruna and then Lazio or Marseille, he may decide that they need to be, should the club progress.

Newcastle get their man :rockman:
