Thanks for cheering me up on a rotten day. There is no chance of Beckham taking World Player of the Year because there are better players who have had better years. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, what about Rivaldo, Shevchenko et al...

If David Beckham wins FIFA World Player of the Yeay, I'll eat my bollocks. Raw. Promise.

I don't like Manchester United much, but Beckham's surely a talented player. I don't hate him at all, and I don't think he stands a chance when it comes to the World Player award. Rivaldo creates as many, or maybe more, goals than Beckham does and scores plenty himself.

Yeah, Beckham might win it...if Rivaldo dies or something (Hopefully NOT!)...but even in that case Rivaldo would probably win the award post-humously.

He can`t win it. Rivaldo has already been awarded the best in europe so if it`s going to be anyone from europe then it will be him.

PS: If it was up to me i`d see Becks take it before Rivaldo anyday!

First off, who decides best player in europe.....FIFA or UEFA? Next, it is very difficult to judge who will win since they play different styles. Just in case you don't know Gabriel Batistuta is the other contender for the award but he stands no chance. I'll still go with my pick....David Beckham. Also does anybody know if that some of Beckham's cards like the one in Brazil will affect the voting?

Risking massive annoying posts by brats like ISS4 and Mark:

I don't see why Rivalod was voted player of the year and not Beckham. Beckham was a key player in the best team in Europe in '98-'99 and Marched it to winning a treble. He was a team player, a team leader, and an all around "winner".

Although Rivaldo's capabilites are undoubted, he they were evidently not enough to outaccomplish Beckham.

Although titles alone are a poor way of judging performances, there's almost no other. Still, I think Beckham should have been picked.

Please don't reply with "Hahahah that's so dumb" or the such. Thanks.

No "ha ha ha's" here Sella. (By the way, thanks for some of your sensible posts, it's refreshing these days in this forum.)

I guess it just depends on what your criteria are - you make a strong case for Becks based on what his team accomplished. But if you are more focused on what the individual is doing on the field AND contributing to his team, I think you have to go with Rivaldo hands down.

I love English football, and am proud of what Man U. accomplished, but as a player I think Becks is rather one-dimensional compared to Rivaldo. He takes great free kicks and crosses beautiful balls, but Rivaldo does so much more. Rivaldo is fantastic on the dribble, creates and scores goal (and his left foot is certainly equal to Becks' right.)

On present form, it seems to be a comparison between the best LEFT FOOTED PLAYER in the world, and the best RIGHT FOOT in the world.

I would have to vote for Rivaldo.

Cheers.

I think the overriding thing is whether he helped his National team win anything, and considering England bombed in France 98 (David Batty's fault..and who does he play for? ah yes LEEDS!, It was his missed penalty that screwed it up)Becks didn't help his cause by letting his temper get the better of him, but Rivaldo helped Brazil to the Copa America and finished leading scorer.
Anyway, sooner or later Becks will take Player of the Year and then there will be no
stopping him. Providing he learns to curb his temper. (And I am a Man Utd fan, and very proud of it)

If Beckham wants to win such prestigious (??) awards he has to learn to control his temper and not act like a petulant school boy.

At the very least he could learn to hit them before!! they pass him.

Ferguson has tried to protect and nurture him but I think we're beginning to see the real reason Hoddle left him out of the WC98 side for so long.

He also has to learn some fashion tips, dump his annoying wife and stop wearing her undies.....that's not what's meant by getting in to a girl's pants!!

He is incredibly talented but like so many others he's becoming a prima and destroying it.

I've supported Man U for longer than I care to remember, though I have to admit there my B team.

My first team is Heart of Midlothian (scot prem).....but we all have our cross to bare.

FIFA player of the year is voted on by the national team coaches from all member nations. I didn't know Batistuta was the other finalist though where did you hear that? By the way they name three finalists from the top 3 vote getters, they dont take another vote after that or anything, this is done only so there is some suspense during the awards dinner.

Also in my opinion Beckham had a chance to win it but blew it when he had such slow start to the fall season, and wasnt exactly great for England in Euro qualifying (on the other hand, where would England be without Scholes?). Oh well better luck next time...

I really HATE being right all the time - my bollocks remain uneaten http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/wink.gif

Seriously though, I'm amazed that he managed to finish second in the poll when he is so, so far from the complete player that its untrue. George Best is bang on in what he said - can't head, can't tackle, has a poor-ish left foot...

The only reason he maid to 2º spot is because he is a media darling and that he is married to a Spice Gilr and likes to wear lingerie. Can anyone say in their right minds that he is better then figo?

My english is not that good but it seems yours is worse.

I say "no one in their right mind"

Since you are a Loony your opinion doesnt count http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/biggrin.gif j/k

Forget you are a MANU supporter, just look at what both players can do/qualities:

FIGO:

Cross
Header
Shoot with both foot
Pass
Dribble
Score
Leader

Beck:

Cross

So how on earth can beck be better, he is only better if you are a blind Manu supporter.
