1. Individual players skills improve by your Coaches, for example spend points on your Forward Coach to make Strikers and CF's better, theres also a Goalkeeping coach, defending coach and finally a midfield coach.

2. The Aeroplane icon is wha tells you that you are the away team, and/or your team is flying to that location that day.
