THE REVENGE
Round of 16 - Second Leg
March 9th 2005
20:45 (CET) Highbury Stadium - London
First leg result: Bayern München 3:1 Arsenal
Probable line-ups:
Arsenal: Lehmann - Laurén, Touré, Senderos, Cole - Vieira, Edu - Ljungberg, Reyes - Bergkamp, Henry
Bayern Munich: Kahn - Sagnol, Lucio, Kovac, Lizarazu - Salihamidzic, Demichelis, Frings - Ballack - Pizarro, Guerrero
Referee: Massimo de Santis (Italy)
Let's hope for an entertaining game. And a win for us, obviously :)
Socrates 07-03-2005, 05:56:AM If i was Bayern manager i would take Kahn and Makaay with 9 defenders and defend like crazy. Makaay being hte only attacker and everyone else just stand in front of Kahn(H)
so 1-0 Bayern
Makaay
(H) :mrpimp:
ForzaNerrazurri 07-03-2005, 05:57:AM makaay is not available to play in this game i believe
Yep, Makaay will definitly miss the game with a thigh injury.
Guerrero is more likely his substitute.

Meh play Pizzaro up front then:D
EDIT is Santa Cruz out too?
fh_29 07-03-2005, 06:03:AM one of arsenal's starting 11 will score an own goal :D
seroiusly, this IS the match where arsenal can shock the world and stop being called euro flops (or get respected more in Europe) ..... but it probably won't happen. Arsenal will be missing campbell in defence.

Pizarro and Guerrero should be the striking duo. It all depends on the line-up that day. Pizarro could well be the lone striker.

I would just stack the Defence and Midfield to prevent Arsenal from scoring. You guys have a nice lead 3-1 i dont see the need to score just play good defence and the match is yours.

some fu.cker scores for bayern in the last minute :(
Klobb 07-03-2005, 06:24:AM Arsenal 2 - 1 Bayern
Henry, Pires
Pizarro
I'm hoping Magath will stack the defense/midfield instead of putting both Pizarro and Guerrero up front.
GO BAYERN!1111eleventy:crazyboy:
If we play for a draw, we're probably screwed. We need to score a goal early in the match to settle the game.
Vagegast 07-03-2005, 06:46:AM Which is what I would do considering the fact that Arsenal are very shaky in defense.
Pizarro14 07-03-2005, 06:50:AM 2-1
Pizza
Guerrero
Henry
Offence is the best form of defence. We need to get Arsenal nice and early and then pile up the defence.
phead 07-03-2005, 07:12:AM my prediction 0:0
scholl & makaay are injured.
but the whole defence (especially lucio, kovac, demichelis) & kahn are top at the moment.
maybe ballack heads one, but corners and freekicks must be used effectivly for that.

:funny: 2-1 to Bayern seems to be pretty common, and im gonna echo that. Pizarro x 2 (hes been on fire lately) and Ljunberg for the Arse. Bollocks for MoM (H)
Edit: Reminds me of Liverpools Fluoride Cinamon-Bongo (H) (think it was Hanek that came up with that one(Y) )
SuRFy 07-03-2005, 10:39:AM Hmmm, this is an interesting match, i'd love to see the 2 top london sides get knocked out, i'm pretty sure Bayern did enough in Munich, but Arse win the match, but Bayern goes through. :)
bkaj21 07-03-2005, 11:09:AM 5-1 Arsenal
yall know it. anytime theres euro trouble, thats the score ;)
bayern score in 1st 5 mins through a counter, then arsenal wake up
RoyIsALegend 07-03-2005, 12:19:PM Munich's going to come into England play a suffocating, German style. They have a comfortable lead.
1-0 Bayern or 1-1... they'll move on.

rhizome17 07-03-2005, 01:45:PM Well, I have a feeling Arsenal will score, not through Henry but from the midfield. But I don't think they will do enough to go through.
i have the feeling its going to be a draw for this game. so 1-1

In what way was he comparing Palace with Bayern?
Anyway. We'll go through. Hopefully. I don't think it will be another Thierry Henry show, it doesn't come on 2 matches in a row.. It'll probably be our front 3 doing the damage again.
Jose Reyes and DB10 must start.
Hendrik 07-03-2005, 07:02:PM I'm very confident about this game. Our defense has been outstanding in the last couple of weeks, it's not easy to break through the center line of Lucio, Kovac and Demichelis.
Makaay's absence does hurt but Pizarro was more consistent in the past games.
Pizarro14 07-03-2005, 07:57:PM Vince i think if guerrero starts he will do well. This kid is so gifted and has great awareness on the pitch. And yea our Defense setup is so hard to break now. we found our missing key, all i'am saying is if we start Guerrero-Pizarro is that it won;t be as bad as some people say. But as soon as Makaay heals 100% bring back makaay. ;)
ladylover 07-03-2005, 08:28:PM Lucio is going to eat Henry alive. I think 1-1 or 2-0 Bayern, Pizarro scoring both, he is in form
b-ytter 07-03-2005, 09:03:PM I think this will be a 1-1 or a 1-0(Arsenal) game!

aint like i have claimed to have any talent to see into the future. It is simply a guess, dont bother trying to target me just 4 making an opinion.
TheBlueBalla 08-03-2005, 04:14:AM All these comparisons of Arse's situation to the team against inter last year are a lil misguided. Bayern are not that Inter team, they will defend, they will be organized, and in my opinion, complete collapse is out of the question with a team system like theirs. Besides, if by some miracle they go through, that means the Blues go through, then its Wayne Bridge time again (H)
(8) Ohhh, waynie bridge
Scored a great fvcking goal...
:D
ogsimon 08-03-2005, 04:19:AM If arsenl get an early goal- anything can happen. Milan had a great defence last year but deportivo tore them to shreds- Arsenal tend to score goals in quick succession - so dont rule that out either

In the EPL maybe but not in CL and Bayern isn't easy, they are a well organized team, and since Sole is out it is very difficult for Arse to keep a cleansheet. And don't forget Bayern has won the CL before, they are among Europes finest. And with Lucio in a good mood I can't see Arsenal scoring a lot of goals. And Henry hasn't quite proven himself in the CL so far this season.
Hendrik 08-03-2005, 04:45:AM With Makaay being out Bayern might even play a 4-5-1 although I favour the two striker tactics.
The team will be well organised like it's been in the last couple of weeks. We successfully kept a clean sheet in 6 of the 7 league after winter break.
Kahn, Lucio, Ballack and co. have already been to a final of the CL and the WC they surely know how to play in games like these.

Bayern v. Arsenal Preview(Soccernet) (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/preview?id=169933&cc=5901)
Dreath 09-03-2005, 06:05:AM I'd Like to see Arsneal take this line-up
-----------------Lehmann------------------
--Lauren----Touré---Senderos----Cole
--Ljungberg--Vieira--Fabregas--Reyes
------------Bergkamp--Henry------------
I'd prefer Fabregas over Flamini because we need to attack. Fabregas can open up defenses really well and he might prove priceless.
Eng4WorldCup 09-03-2005, 07:11:AM and i prefer flamini because we MUST be more dominant in midfield to be able to help the forwards. i highly, highly doubt wenger would start fabgregas over flamini. also pires is back, and although he will probably start on the bench, we may have him in there form the start
I would start Flamini since Bergkamp is back to split open the defense. IF we're losing then throw in Fab and Pires. Man, Bergkamp is the key to this game as I AM CONFIDENT with Senderos and Toure.
sorry for being a twat...
why isnt Campbell or Pires on Arsenal...?:o
Klobb 09-03-2005, 08:28:AM Injuries.
mmmm too bad for Arsenal, Pires had a great season on the last CL, its going to be missed
Eng4WorldCup 09-03-2005, 09:02:AM ^pires is fit actually. he may start, he may come off the bench
there´s no question about that. Pires has a lot of experience in these kind of games, he has to start!
Bummy_JaB 09-03-2005, 09:14:AM NO, it does not depend all on Henry...... its a team efferot.... if we are to pass through we need 100% fight from each player.......
IF we pass I want Chelsea next round for revenge last year:f***:
Hendrik 09-03-2005, 07:42:PM Kickoff is only 6 hours away from now and I'm already nervous.
As for a possible next round opponent, the winner of Monaco/Eindhoven or Leverkusen/Liverpool would be fine with me. At least no ultra defensive Italian team or the Russians.

ColumbusGunners 09-03-2005, 11:53:PM Arsenal 3-1 Bayern Munich
Bergkamp 2x
Henry
Bayern: set piece, probably Jens being too ambitious
Arsenal in penalties
I don't think it is possible for Arsenal to keep a clean sheet but the late goal in Munich will haunt come back to haunt them.
Bergkamp will bring out the young Dennis for this one. He will do his job and take the pressure off of Henry. But Henry will step up and hopefully become the big game player everyone criticises him for.
It will take some luck and the Gunner's need one of their back to back goals in two minutes like Middlesborough. It is a shame they are not playing against Middlesborough.
Come on you Gunners
Hendrik 09-03-2005, 11:58:PM The fans don't seem to care, the attendances have never been higher and are highest in world football.

U have bn mocking arsenal all week- aint just this one post. its seems to me as if u think ur passage to the next stage is assured- and arsenal are no threat
lol Arsenal are a threat and a good team, but Bayern are more disciplined and defend a whole hell of a lot better. After a 3-1 result, can you blame him for his confidence in Bayern?

Bobby 10-03-2005, 04:11:AM We held a clean sheet without our 2 best central defenders, our spirit can't be denied. We'll have a better shot next year, we'll finally have a bit of money with the loans being paid off and the stadium having been paid for.
We can bring in a player with some bite, something we're missing without Parlour.
We should go for the FA cup, and not give up on the league, i can still see Chelsea docked points for the Cole episode, and we can catch United.
Gilberto was on the bench tho, great sign.
Pizarro14 10-03-2005, 04:25:AM Man Arsenal Fans keep ur head up and ogsimon no hard feelings? i wasn't trying to be cocky. Man from what i hear the Cb SENDERSON (WHATEVER u spell it) impressed alot of people. Goodluck Arsenal fans, you guys kept ur head up threw out the whole 2 games ;)

No.
Just had to point out how garbage that ''make-up'' post was.
You really are a cocky little bitch afterall.
Seeya anywho.
Dreath 10-03-2005, 04:40:AM Senderos and Flamini were magnificent. Senderos is the next Tony Adams. Watch this space.

Flamini shouldn't have come off. Put Cesc on the wing instead.
Senderos needs to stay awake. Other than that we got our
Adams-like Campbell replacement.

He was the best player on teh pitch without a shadow of a doubt. He slipped once, but Lehmann recovered. Everything else the two eruvian's had nothing when against him.

its all good- jus got a bit wound up b4 the match i suppose- congrats again u guys deserved to go through- and u play some nice football.
From arsenals point of view- sendaros came of age today- i jus hope we consolidate and maybe get trabelsi- someone versatile who can play all across the back, maybe kompany. I also think it is important to replace ljungberg. More experience up front ( depends on aliadiere and Van persie) and a sound goalie.

No, he's just a bit un-aware at times,
vital moments eg.
I've seen this at a numerous amount of occasions.
Flamini impressed me more though. I've got to say.
Hendrik 10-03-2005, 04:55:AM We put on a very aggressive performance in the first half but seemed to overpower a bit at that time. Arsenal easily controlled the game in the second half but our defenders Lucio and Kovac did a good job.
I think it's deserved that Bayern go to the rext round, they were the better team over 3 halfs.
Pizarro14 10-03-2005, 04:58:AM Vince what are your overall rating for both side? each player or anyone else who saw the game
Klobb 10-03-2005, 05:00:AM Anyone got highlight video?

cesc on the wing? u, my friend, is on crack
overall, i was in skool the whole game. the first update was at halftime 0-0, second update was 1-0 with 2/3 mins left.
well, i did expect us to go out, and im happy we at least won the game
also, on the bright side henry is 7 goals away (H)
now imagine that comes against spuds/chelski (H) (H)
Bobby 10-03-2005, 06:11:AM I think that if Bayern's defense can hold true for the rest of the CL, they've got as much of a chance as anyone.
And Senderos does look good, big and strong just what you want from a DC in England.

'ol stupid strikes again.
ryan_goal 10-03-2005, 09:07:AM Respect to Henry, what a goal against Bayern. I did expect Arsenal to switch up a gear and put more pressure on the Bayern defence after that goal. But after that goal it seemed to me as if the whole arsenal team was content with that one goal lead and didnt create any clear cut chances.
Btw that Vieira's "flick, turn and shoot" is really wonderful, although it didnt go in. Never thought he could have done that. He must have learned that from Bergkamp?
Although Arseanl failed again in Europe, I think they still have a lot of positives to take from this defeat. It proves that technically Arsenal aint worse than other European elites. Plus they do have a very good squad of players especially the young ones with the likes of Cesc, Flamini, and that young defender(what's his name again?) etc.. It's just Mr. Wenger's lack of flexibility in tactics that cost them dear. In this aspect I think they are very similiar to Barca.
Oh and at last, I only watched the 2nd half and I think Reyes is shiit and is well past his best already, did nothing except that wonderful last min tackle.
henry#14 10-03-2005, 09:19:AM He's 20 and past his best?Whatever you say:| I can actually say that I am proud about our performance, and that Arsenal can at least be mentioned among top European teams. I must agree that Wenger's tactics simply don't cut it in Europe.
Kristian 10-03-2005, 09:32:AM Reyes must learn the art of beating men.
And his balance is horrible. Although his confidence has gone up.

Sensational for a short period of time (at the beginning of this season)
+
Has been crap since then
=
Flop
=
A player that's past his best at a very young age.
And out of the games I watched Reyes play this season, he certainly falls into that "flop" category.
Moreover, obviously by saying he's past his best I was trying to emphasize how crap he's been and to be harsh on that gypsy. How some of you read into it is really funny.

Mother of god, that is a world class beating. Was there a reason they continued to score even after there was no possible doubt? I know some were penalties, but i wouldnt want to publicly embarrass a team like that unless they were like mortal rivals or at least a domestic side. Ahh, poor werder bremen
