A lot of the solid players in my current career lineup are replacements for retired players, and it is impossible to tell in advance how much worse they will be than the player they replace. I try not to pick such players up too early as I find that they develop more slowly on my team than with the big boys in the game (who by definition tend to have most of the better players).

Of the originals in the game JP Saviola (Monaco) has been an absolute brick for me with nearly 230 goals over just short of five seasons. In defence Milito (Real Zaragoza) was a solid pick-up, midfield I like Kaka (AC), but doesn't everybody, and up-front Rooney (Man U) has done the business for me since I brought him in over the past off-season.

It also depends on what level your current team is and how much money you have to spend, since some of my best career pickups were players in the high 60s or low 70s who made incremental improvements to my team whilst not costing me an arm and a leg. Scandinavia seems to be a good place to look for those sort of players.
