Funky But Effective Formations: Real Madrid

Remember last season's champions league quarter final between Manchester United and Real Madrid at Old Trafford?

As you might remember, Real pushed up their full-backs so they could set up quick counter-attacking moves by switching the play in midfield positions , once they broke up Man U's attack. Redondo was detailed to man-mark
Keane and Helguera sat in front of the two centre-halves (almost like a third centre half)

The wingers played wide still but the full backs were very narrow.

Although Real basically played a 4-4-2 formation it was on that night more like 334.

can you set up a (flat)3(Diamond)3(Diamond)4 on fifas '99, 2000, or 2001?

no No NO !!!!!.

try it on fifa '98 rtwc.

and watch the game play of team particularly the movement of the fullbacks.

It totally realistic and watch how Roberto Carlos takes Beckham out the game!!

(of course you need the player's edited correctly)

I’ll give you some hints on making players more realistic in a future post

I do totally agree with you.

The Team Management in FIFA RTWC is way better than the later ones.
I agree with all that you say.

I'm looking forward to your next post!

as a matter of fact you CAN set up a 3-3-4 (flat-diamond-diamond) formation like you described on Fifa 99!

Cheers!

Did the formation work with Real?

on fifa '99 your cannot change the attacking bias of a team player (in Real Madrids case Iván Helguera would have maximium attacking bias as third central centre half in a 3-3-4 formation) and also the 'nutability'of a player on 98 is more effective on 98.

also the passing levels on 99 are unrealistic. They can all pass perfectly and at an unrealisitically fast rate.

FIFA 98 RTWC IS STILL THE BEST
I'll give you an example:

my friend was playing with Arsenal against Real Madrid on 98 rtwc. I deceided to manage Real Madrid not play.

My friend realised was the only way to open real was by exposing their lack of pace on the right hand side of defence.

Although he hadn't score he did created a few openings using the lethal pace of Henry (however the french striker's finishing let him down).

remember I play real 3-3-4, so the full backs were narrow and high up the field, so I replaced Michel Salgado with the faster Geremi (even though the former is a better defender and footballer technically).

The substitution worked on the whole. Geremi's pace enable him to defend against Henry in wide positions and also his runs down the flanks meant my friend had to use Pires (as a left winger) more defensively.

the only problem was that he gave the ball away in key areas when Real were attacking because his passing and awareness points were comparatively lower (than Salgado's).

Tell me if that is real or not??!?!?

Real won that game 2-0, one goal from Guti, one from Raúl.

FIFA 98 RTWC IS STILL THE BEST
