View Full Version : Rumour: Abramovich to take over Fenerbahce?

A friend of mine sent me a link to a Turkish Newspaper Milliyet, and Aktuel, claiming that Abramovich has his eyes on Fenerbahce for a takeover.

http://www.yeniaktuel.com.tr/hft-10507-107.html
http://www.milliyet.com.tr/2005/04/23/son/sonspo03.html

According to the articles, the source of such news comes from the Author Antoine Vitkine who wrote "La Nouveaux Imposteurs". The author claims that Abramovic had a meeting with the Fenerbahce board of directors 2 weeks ago, discussing a take over in which Abramovich offered 600 million. In addition to the quotes cited from this particular book, the author paraphrased that Abramovich is attracted to the fact that Fenerbahce "Is a team with 30 million fans that is hungry for European success"

The only difference between the two sites that i listed above as sources for this news, is that Milliyet claims at the end of its article that "If the takeover were to take place, players like Ronaldinho, Nedved ve Shevchenko will come to Fenerbahce" :) ...I think that's completely obsurd, but i'm just stating what the article says. I think that was more or less an attempt to make the article more colourful and attractive.

The second link (yeniaktuel) basically says the same things as Milliyet, excluding the "future transfers" if Abramovich were to take over.

Tell me what you think, and/or have any more info on it. I'm just curious. I myself am 99% convinced none of this will take place, but i'd like to hear other comments.

Help?

Well as a owner, i'd think the point of taking over a team is to make them successful. It's like a business for abramovich. Like I said, I don't believe its going to happen, but it's interestingm for Fenerbahce fans especially.

Why would you post tabloid garbage like this? Not happening. So he's going to spend 300 Million each summer instead of 150? Give me a break.

Help?

The thing with Roman is that he doesn't need new bussines to make more profit, he is already sitting just fine on all our money that he is stealing. He didn't takeover Chelsea to make profit, so why would he go for someone who is smaller, it would make sense if he went for the Russian team to make them better, but Turkish would make no sense.

Abramovich already controls Chelsea, PSV and CSKA and there are rumors that he also controls Deportivo. So I do doubt he needs another one team.
Besides, I bet he would prefer Ronaldinho, Nedved and Shevchenko to come to Chelsea not to other club;)

Abramovich only controls Chelsea and Chelsea have a co-operation deal with PSV, pretty much like the one Manchester United have with Sporting Clube de Portugal. CSKA is sponsored by his oil company, nothing else. As for Fenerbahce, won't happen (owning them) unless he's prepared to pull the football club out of Europe every season - if you own or have a controlling stake in more than one European club, only one of those clubs can compete in European competition. I can only see him/his oil company Sibneft sponsoring them at most if anything does happen.

I wouldn' t be surprised if he is taking them over, because for him clubs become nothing more than an expensive hobby so whether it is a Turkish team or not, with his money, he will lure players in for sure.

I' ll believe it though if and when I read it on either the BBC or Skysports websites.

He doesn't buy clubs to make money anyways. Chelsea has got to be in the red by tens of millions only it doesn't matter because he has billions.

This taking over thing is getting too much. It makes it more difficult for semi rich clubs to bid on players as they will be out bid anytime. Money is also getting to important in football, it takes the pleasure out of the game.......

He can't directly take the team over since only 1 (Chelsea or Fener) would be able to participate in Europe. Perhaps he'll pull a Corinthians, giving money to a group who control the club but I don't really see the point.

Fenerbahce is already rich and they don't need his money to be stronger. I really don't think Abromovich is even thinking about taking over Fenerbahce. But even that's the case I don't think Fenerbahce Sports Club Organization will allow that because Fenerbahce doesn't have an owner, the organization is filty rich and 300 million offer means nothing for Fener.

No. The point is not to make the team better. He surely doesn't give a toss about Chelsea or Fenerbahce. Fenerbahce (if the article is accurate) has approximately 30 million fans. With his investment, he could get a ton of fans into seats and buying merchandise, making himself a nice profit, and taking adfvantage of the fact that no one has really tapped the full potential of Turkish football. If he could make the etam successful on the European front, the profit making opportunities are endless.

It doesn't matter how much profit someone makes, they will always look for more. If people were satisfied with their profit margins, then Bill Gates would have retired a long time ago.

If this were to happen, it would actually be a very good idea, as Turkish football could potentially make a lot of money if it gains in popularity. And someone like Roman could make Turkish football more attractive, for players, fans, and future investment.

Oh, and someone said that he would spend $150 million per year on players...that wouldnt make sense, as it doesnt require as much money to create a dominant Turkish team than it does to create one in England, and with enough depth the team could play well in Europe as well. And the big shopping sprees early on in his Chelsea career are because he wanted to quickly build a dominant team. Once the pieces are in place, only minor adjustments would be needed in the future (minor as in one or two big names per year, meaning spending about as much as Real Madrid or Manchester United do in a season, for example).
