I recently installed Fifa RTW 98 on my desktop computer (I had it running flawlessly on my laptop before). It's a Win98 SE, DirectX 8 installed on which Fifa 2001 runs just fine. However in Fifa98 I get heavily distorted speach, like if I've pulled up my stereo to full power.

This always happens when I'm playing the game. If I press Esc, the speach is fine until it gets stopped by the menu. If I don't select a controller when entering a match the commentator will speak while the menu is still displaying, again the quality is fine. But as soon as I start playing I'll have that distortion again.

Any ideas?

Try installing new drivers for your sound card. I had the same problem when I reinstalled Windows 98...

Seemed like a good idea, and I did it. However it did not make any difference.

Could it be there is any incompatibility towards DirectX8 or Windows Media Player 7? The rest of my system (Windows 98 SE) is pretty mainstream. Also Fifa2001 still runs perfectly well.

And the music in Fifa98 is fine, it's just the commentators' voices that are heavily distorted...

I don't think there are problems with the compatibility of DirectX since it works fine for me. I would still put my money on the sound card... How to fix it if it didn't work with updating the drivers, I don't know...

BTW, try updating the drivers for your graphics card aswell...

I think its the power management of Windows. Dont play FIFA using Direct X ie 3d Acceleration. Play it using the software mode. Hope you can use the info.

Yes, setting the hardware acceleration to a lower value in the display dialog did the trick. Thanks!
