Azzurri announce North American tour

Marcello Lippi’s Italy squad will go on a brief tour of the US and Canada during the summer, announced the FIGC.

The Azzurri get together for a crucial World Cup qualifier in Norway on June 4 and will then travel across the Atlantic for two friendly encounters.

On Wednesday June 8 they will meet with Serbia-Montenegro at Toronto’s Skydome, kicking off at 8pm local time – 1am in the UK.

Italy then travel to New York and the Giants Stadium will host a match with Ecuador on Saturday June 11. It is an afternoon kick-off at 3pm, which will be 8pm in Britain.

The squad for this friendly tour will be announced following the Norwegian World Cup qualifier and is expected to contain many experimental choices.

My birthday present will be front row tickets to this game (Y)

Maybe the stars from Milan wont be here, but i see no reason why the rest of the team wouldnt come.

If at least 3 of Cassano, Totti, Gilardino, Vieri, Del Piero, Inzaghi, Miccoli, Cannavaro, Nesta, Zambrotta or Gattuso make the trip ill be more than ecstatic.

Pirlo will not be coming for sure. Thats almost a 100% guarentee.

Not sure how Serbia got selected, but its better than Ecuador. Too bad England and Italy couldnt face eachother as theyre both coming around this time.

* santino and possibly modena will be going nuts when they see this story

Not sure how Serbia got selected...

Toronto has the second largest Serb population in North America behind only Chicago, Illinois.

I havent seen too many Serbians around here. A LOT of Croatians though.

I think the Italian team might be surprised by how many Italians there really are in this area. I expect a 55,000-60,000 attendence with 95% of crowd being of Italian descent. (Y)

Lucarelli-Iaquinta

Great team

del piero and vieri dont belong on that list either. theyre all just names, and maybe Lippi will bring them because they are more well known.

And at ForzaNerazzurri, Portugal would be a much better opponent as theres also a huge Portuguese community in the GTA. Italy could make it 3 (friendly) wins in 3 years against them(Y).

woohoo the story made uefa.com!

Toronto showdown for European rivals
Thursday, 12 May 2005
Italy and Serbia and Montenegro have agreed to play a friendly international on 8 June in Toronto, Canada.

Skydome date
The match will be played at the Skydome stadium at 20.00 local time (02.00CET). The date is reserved for FIFA World Cup qualifying games, but both Italy and Serbia and Montenegro are free. Four days earlier, Serbia and Montenegro play host to Belgium in Group 7, which the Serbo-Montenegrins lead by two points from Spain, while pacesetters Italy travel to Norway in Group 5. Both associations agreed to play the match in Canada in view of large expatriate communities there.

Qualification encounters
Italy and Serbia and Montenegro last met in the UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying round, drawing 1-1 in both Naples and Belgrade. The Italians qualified for the finals in Portugal by topping the group, while Serbia and Montenegro finished third. Italy will subsequently face Ecuador at the Giants stadium in New York on Saturday 11 June.

Mikey

regardless of whether Italy brings a host of its stars, its win-win.

If they bring fringe guys you know they'll be trying their best (something that doesnt happen with regulars) because theyre playing for a place in team. Theres a really good chance that Miccoli will come(Y).

If Italy brings a similar squad to what England is bringing Ill be more than happy.

(If the Scudetto goes to playoff that will mean there will be no players from Juve and Milan coming)

After he didnt come last year for Roma-Celtic, i really hope Cassano doesnt come up with one of his trademark 'injuries' before Italy friendly.

ForzaNerrazurri

Honestly I couldn't care less who Lippi brings. How many times can you say you've seen your National Team play? (well for us Canadians anyway). It's something I always dreamed about and now it's coming true.

edit: and its not like he's going to bring no-names. They are obviously going to be doing well in Serie A to get even a small chance to play with the NT

modena_10

so maybe Lippi will bring the squad that faces Norway to Canada?

Mikey

I could see him bringing a squad similar to this:

De Sanctis, Roma

Bonera, Barzagli, Materazzi, Chiellini, Zaccardo, Grosso, Oddo

Barone, De Rossi, Blasi, Gattuso, Ambrosini, Diana

Toni, , Cassano, Lucarelli, Montella, Totti

(Zauli would be ecstatic)

I cant see him taking too much Juve and especially Milan players.

Probably Del Piero in Montella's place. Itd be amazing just to see Del Piero play, and he's a recognizable name to casual soccer fans. I'd love for Gilardino to come, but he didnt have a proper rest last summer (U-21's and olympics) so I think he'll play WCQ and than take well deserved rest. Next year the Coppa Italia will take the same form as the English FA Cup. Much better format IMO. Anyways:

MILAN, Italy (AP) - Several of Italy's top players might miss a North American tour in June after the Italian league objected to its timing.

The league argued that the tour was organized in an overly busy end-of-season period.

The soccer federation, which is responsible for the national team, has arranged for Italy to play Serbia-Montenegro on June 8 in Toronto and Ecuador on June 11 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

Reports said Italy coach Marcello Lippi wouldn't take the players who go to the World Cup qualifier against Norway on June 4.

He could also leave home some national team regulars set to play an Italian Cup final June 12. Inter Milan, Udinese, AS Roma and Cagliari are in the competition's semifinals.

League officials also noted that a potential playoff for the Serie A title is set for June 14. With three rounds to play, Juventus leads AC Milan by just three points.

Adriano Galliani, president of the Italian league and vice president of AC Milan, wouldn't comment on his talks with federation president Franco Carraro this week regarding the tour.

Mikey

There was a healthy discussion on why the Canadian national team was not selected to play against either the Serbs or the Azzuri on the FAN 590 radio station and RSO. So to some extent this was advertising, and then some, but yes, nothing like what it should be....Good chance that the FAN will carry it LIVE in English and almost certainly TLN in Italian. If Totti, Cassano and Montella come i'll do but if they get players from Inter Milan or Juventus i might think about it... Ill definitively skip it if i see players from mid table temas like Udines, Samp or even Palermo. Nothing againt the teams i mentioned but i dont really think those 85 buck are worth spent in these case scenario.

I have to disagree with you italian talent is being produced by us samp udinese etc.. I may be wrong but i dont see the bigger clubs producing italian talent like us i see many foreign players in the big 3 teams getting a starting job then italian players do, just becuz were barely cl team and are uefa cup teams and dont have much history doesnt mean, you cant call players up from us, without us italian football would be dying, so you need us to survive remeber football is always in a transitional period and so is our national team, well thats my 2 cents agree or disagree this is my opinon.

Roma have made it Coppa Italia Final, and they need to win to get into Uefa Cup and salvage anything from a terrible season.

This means De Rossi, Totti, Cassano, Montella, Ferrari etc.. will all be skipping to North American tour as the (2 legged) final is around the same time and doubt Roma would release the players.

Azzurri announcement today
Italy expected to play Serbia-Montenegro June 8 at dome
Former NASL star Chinaglia scheduled to confirm game

MARK ZWOLINSKI
SPORTS REPORTER

The Italian Soccer Federation says details are being worked out.

The Canadian Soccer Association says it hasn't been contacted.

Rogers Centre officials will say only that there's a news conference today.

Toronto soccer fans have been befuddled by such vagueness for the past week, but organizers will announce today that Italy's national soccer team will play a friendly against Serbia-Montenegro on June 8 at the Rogers Centre.

Soccer aficionados have been phoning the Rogers Centre, newspapers and the CSA since the Italian soccer federation and ANSA, the Italian national newswire service, announced the game and the date more than a week ago on their respective websites.

Since then, however, all involved have been reluctant to confirm details, leaving an air of mystery over an event due to take place in less than a month.

Finally, at 6:30 p.m. yesterday, Rogers announced it would hold a press conference today at 11 a.m. featuring Giorgio Chinaglia, the most prolific scorer in North American Soccer League history who played 14 internationals for the Azzurri, including two in the 1974 World Cup.

There were few details about the press conference, other than it was to announce "a major sporting event."

Chinaglia is a senior vice-president of Champions World, a New Jersey-based company that organized a North American tour last summer featuring European soccer powers Roma, FC Porto, Liverpool and Scottish champion Celtic.

Two of the games were played at Rogers Centre.

Regardless of today's announcement, the CSA said yesterday that it still hadn't been contacted about the game.

"We expect to be (contacted) since we would be acting as the host country ... and our consent is needed before the event can go ahead," said CSA spokesperson Morgan Quarry.

It was not clear last night what the CSA would do if its consent wasn't sought.

The Azzurri are also scheduled to play Ecuador at Giants Stadium on June 11 in East Rutherford, N.J.

It's expected that Ticketmaster will handle the general sales for the game, with the Rogers Centre managing suites and club seating.

Chinaglia's involved, I guess we're screwed. :(

btw, nobody's buying tickets for the Jersey game, how come? I went to the site and can get real good seats right in the middle close to the pitch. :/

they'll never come to America if there's like 10 000 people going there. That's why I wanted them here. I'm sure TO will get a lot though if the game goes through.

Read this morning (Saturday..day of the FA Cup final, can't remember the date) that there is a very good chance of Chelsea playing AC Milan in an exhibition game at the ROGERS CENTRE in Toronto sometime in July. The source being The Star.

The news of a potential matchup was first mentioned here:

The guy who is organizing the Italy-Serbia game is the one who said that there is a good chance of the Blues and Rosonneri playing.

Im having trouble deciding what tickets to buy. I never expected it to be the top players coming, but i didnt think it it would this depleted. As it stands there will likely be no Roma and Inter reps (coppa italia final), and the Juve players may be on that gay Japan tour (shouldnt this be a preseason event?). And Milan players will have just played a long season so I question who of them would come.

This is the most likely roster I see coming:

De Sanctis, Roma

Barzagli, Bonera, Cassetti, Zaccardo, Tonetto

Diana, Pinzi, Barone, Brienza, Gattuso, Esposito

Toni, Lucarelli, Di Michele (if im lucky Gilardino and Miccoli) (if im not lucky Iaquinta and Rocchi)

I'll probably buy $80 on decent tickets. I'll pay 120 if Chelsea-Milan comes.

at ForzaNerazzurri, when i was feet away from players i was at the front of 134D on that map. It was closer to field than in that diagram.

I disagree with mark about this game having great attendence. Pretty much nobody knows its happening, and its only a few weeks away. I think there will probably be a huge amount of people buying tickets the day of or day before game.

Lippi to look at new faces
by Nadia Carminati - created on 24 May 2005

Marcelo Lippi will use Italy's tour to North America to blood new recruits as he looks to prepare for next year's World Cup finals.

The Azzurri are playing Serbia & Montenegro and Ecuador in their two match tour that begins on June 8, after they play Norway in a World Cup qualifier on June 4.

Lippi has announced he will take the opportunity to assess those players who have limited experience at European and international level.

"For the next games I'll call on new players," said Lippi.

"In particular for the two matches Italy will play in North America I'll call on players who must get experience.

"They will be players that for the moment have never been called up to the national team, and haven't had the possibility to play European competitions with their teams."

Lippi has proved he is not scared to try new faces already this season, and will be looking to weed out potentials for the World Cup in Germany in 2006.

I bought 8 tickets today for game. I have really good seats, and I only had to pay 50$ for them. I planned on getting 80$ tickets, but somehow the 50$ were actually better. If you look at chart santino posted, im in section 139 row 3. I think they were so low because theyre in the Serbia supporters section. No worries, when Italy scores the 8 of us will get to cheer in front of the Serbs(Y).

As for who's coming, Giorgio Chinagli said that Italy will be bringing a very strong team. You should also keep in mind this guy doesnt know ****, but I hope hes right.

I think the team will feature a lot of reps from Palermo and Udinese, and I have a feeling Cannavaro, Gattuso, Buffon will be there. Miccoli should be available, so I hope Lippi brings him.

Lucarelli is the only player who has been confirmed to be making the trip, but Im also 99% sure Gattuso will come as well, as hes suspended for Norway game, Milan has no tours and hes featured on the ad for game in papers. All Roma and Inter players are unlikely to make the trip, as they have the stupid ass Coppa Italia to play for. Any Parma (gilardino, Morfeo, Bovo and Bonera) or Bologna (Nervo) players also will unlikely be called up. For Serbia, Stankovic will obviously be out, but Vucinic, Kezman and Milosevic should all be there. But whos really gonna be paying attention to them anyways. If Vucinic scores I hope he gives one of his players the Sweet Chin Music or something.

To be fair, id pay $50 to see Hellas Verona and Atalanta play, so Im satisfied regardless. My attitude towards this game has pulled a complete 180 to what it was a week ago.

As its pretty obvious, Im busting a nut for this game, which only just over a week away (Y).

omfg what a game!!!!!!! just got home now!!!!!!!!!! Serbia scored and then Blasi got a red card 25 minutes into the game after getting his 2nd yellow. It was kind of a gift for the Azzurri because they had absolutely no mid-field play up until then. 2 or 3 Flares got thrown onto the field by some serbian idiots.
2nd half was intense. chances at both ends, and the serbian fans again ruin the play by running out on the field. one went at peruzzi and peruzzi gave him a head fake and made him drop his flag and run the opposite direction lol.

with about 10 min left Azzurri finally tied it up (I coulda sworn it was Di Michele) but I was so excited and going crazy my memory of the goal was kinda erased. The stadium went bezerk when italy scored it was great.

Carmine Coppola....what a guy, he came on in the 2nd half and gave 100%. Played a Gattuso style running everywhere.

I am really happy we scored with only 10 men, we played great football today. Lippi played a great formation with the 10 men and it worked.

The ref wore a Serbian shirt...I dont know where the hell they got him, but he was terrible.

oh yea: Serbian fans can go **** themselves.

Just came back as well. Fully worth every penny I spent, a great day. I paid $50 for tickets and had excellent ones, but i was on the Serbia side.

Before i go into the game, i wanna say how disappointed I was from the Italian supporters making noise throughout the game. Maybe it was because I was at their end, but the Serbia section was far louder than the Italians. The Serbia section had huge flags and banners, and it was perfectly clear what it was. The Italian side was nothing, with sign that said 'Ciao Rende'. But than the Italians scored, and the place went nuts, far louder than when Serbia scored. The Serbia fans were collectively stupid. One absolute moron got kicked out of the game for throwing flares TEN MINUTES into it. I call him a moron, because if youre gonna do it, wait til the end of the game.

Was it just me, or did every time they cheered SER-BI-A, it sounded exactly like when they used to chant E-C-W at wrestling events?

FACT: whenever you organize an event where there will be mass population of Italian women showing up, your gonna see some of THE FINEST broads in the world. It never fails.

Whenever I saw a guy with a Palermo shirt (saw about 5) i thought it was 'Zauli'.

the Skydome has embarassing security. If you wanted to run on the field, you could, nobody was gonna stop you. They should fix this problem next time theres a game. It was actually funny when the first Serb ran on. Than it was stupid when the next one came on. And than I was just ashamed for Canada when the third guy ran on.

Why the hell did we have somebody sing the Italian national anthem with no music? It wouldve been 10X better if they just played the actual music and let the crowd sing it, as usual. I was actually disappointed with this. The halftime show sucked. The opera singer was pretty good, but very out of place at this type of event. I guess they wanted an Italian staple, but Super Mario and Chef Boyardee were booked. The second singer was pretty average, and nobody seemed to care about him, poor guy. Than some Serbian band played some drunken tune, and the serbs ate that sh*t up.

Now, for the actual game. Luca Toni was dreadful, and rightfully subbed at half. It was embarassing when Blasi was sent off after 30 min, and it was perfectly clear the ref wanted to act like a big shot, when the fouls were nothing too big. Coppola was probably Italys best player on the night. When Lucarelli and Di Michele were introduced, the game changed. Like ForzaNerazzurri, I have no recollection of Lucarellis goal, as I was going nuts as the Serbs around me looked on in disgust.

The Mikey stat nobody will care about except Mikey: the linesman on the day refs me regularly in my leagues :D

They said there was 22,000, i felt like at least 30,000. At the Porto-Liverpool game last year it had something like 40,000 and I dont remember it being so much more than this game. Maybe a lot of people snuck in.

Mark, believe me, you would of enjoyed this a lot. Maybe there werent the stars, but fanatics like us have heard of all them, and theyd put in more effort (they have more to play for) than the 'stars' would in a friendly.

what was up without having a board for the 4th official to announce the subs? i felt so embarrassed having one of the players relay who had to be subbed off to the rest of the team. that was pretty lame. and those paramedics. they just walked casually with their stretcher to the player when he was injured. literally took like a minute to get there. where's the golf cart lol, or at least run to the guy

I was hoping Serbia would win, and that they almost did. Italy got a break when Blasi was sent off.

Nonetheless, was a good game. :jambo:

Maybe it was because I was at their end, but the Serbia section was far louder than the Italians.

well duh
in the venezuela -uruguay game, i was surrounded by 20 uruguayans and i could have sworn that they were louder than the other 25000 venezuelan fans in the stadium.

wow,what a game!!!!!

so it wasnt the WC or Euros, or even a qualifying match, or even the A-team, but hey, the atmosphere alone made my night, the chants, the fights(just 1 broke out, and i think it was serb vs serb, im not to sure), the flares even, it was just amazing to see.

my seats were right above the tunnel so i saw every player enter, exit, and so on. mixing italians, soccer, and beer gives a new meaning to life, just hilarious. every 5 minutes this one guy, around 60 year old would get up, yell "OK, MODA ITALIA, LET'S GO!!!" and the fans would start an "I-TAL-IA!!!" chant. then when the one serbian player was faking an injury another drunk italian stood up, and started yelling "give him some pork and a loaf of bread, he'll be fine, smoke some pork he'll feel better". then when italy scored and everyone went nuts, just an amazing feeling seeing it happen. then the guy (pork yeller) ran to where i was sitting and started throwing ice cubes on the field, he spilled half his beer on me, lol.and the 60 year old guy took off his shirt and ran down the stairs yelling "forza italia!!!". another chant was started but didn't last long: "Serbia, Seriba, Va f'an culo!".

mikey's comment about the women was true, but there was a fair share of ugly ones there, lol. the ref was terrible, but really who cares, he was an italo-canadian so he probably went harder on the italians so he wouldn't be accused by the serbians.

hats off to the group of serbians who were up and cheering the whole game, they had chants, flags, kits, everything, just yelling, lighting flares(near the end of the game), it was really a great sight. the guys who ran out killed italy's momentum but was still funny. the first guy was practically mauled with police brutality, one security guard dove at his face, the other at his back and i think one even kicked him, lol. that guy got arrested and while being escorted out the italian fans threw bottles at him. then another serbian fan ran onto the field(see mikeys post about peruzzi head faking to jump him). and finally, the 3rd one, this guy went unnoticed for awhile, he ran around for a bit, then high-fived a sebian player on the bench, and jumped back into the crowd, he woulda gotten away but there was security guards in the crowd that caught him.

all in all, a great experience and i'll definately go back if given a chance. coppola looked like gattuso but with better ball control, could be useful in the future, and blasi should never put the azzurri shirt on again. who gets a red card in a friendly? let alone 25 mins into it? ridiculous.

ps. the one guy (pork yeller, ice cube thrower) was brought back to his seat by a rogers centre employee, then he had a sign that said "event rate, $15.00 tax. incld." and he just started waving that around for the rest of the game, lol.

santino, i agree Blasi should make fewer reckless tackles, but those werent red card worthy at all

all the stronzo who didnt go to game because there were no 'stars'. fack, just buy a $50 ticket if its a problem (like I did). I know people that spend $150 on pants. And if youre any type of calcio fan, and you havent heard of any of the of players that were called up, than be quiet. I bet a lot of the people that didnt go because there wasnt any 'stars' are the same people that think Del Piero is one of Italys best and most important players. How often does world class players play in Toronto, let alone North America. I maybe excuse mark, as Montreal is far away, but in his shoes I wouldve still made the trip. And I will if the CW only comes to Montreal.

I make all these complaints because the 22,000 attendence could damage the possibility of any future games being held in Toronto.

nothing much to say about him, did his job for the most part but was out of position on the goal and chiellini couldn't catch up to the serbian player in time.

he made some impressive tackles to break up some plays tho

Game today was exciting, though I think a fight broke out during the game and Italy blew some many damn chances, could have scored 3 EASY goals, but they were playing like a bunch of babies and then had a penalty shot and the keeper blocked that. I hope none of them making it on the WC squad, all they kept doing was chipping the ball down field and letting Ecuador get it back, and they were passing the ball around, not kicking it down field...actually taking their time to set up while Italy just wanted to kick the ball as far as they could.

Other then that, I enjoyed it but man...so disappointing that they can't even score 3 easy goals that I could have myself.

so what was the score :|

anyway, that squad's midfield is almost invisible. In the game in Toronto, they did jack all until Blasi was sent off, and then they started to work together better, but before that, they would do the same and just lob balls to toni. I hope we don't see many more experimental squads from lippi. its time to start solidifying a team

1-1. Lobbing balls all game, Italy was doing great from the start, either they got tired very quickly or being very lazy. My mother told me some girl asked another girl behind us saying who is Raitano on the Italian team, cause I have my own customized jersey with my last name on it and they were looking for him on the field. lol

I was pissed, Italy gets the ball, why not just lob it down the field! I felt like I was watching American football. So many fouls too, there was about like 10 yellow cards and some of the players were making the dumbest moves ever.

The Ecuadorians were really into it around the stadium, jumping up and down and banging drums, we were chanting "Italia" but after one Italian player fouled their guy in the box and got a penalty shot and made it, we went quiet, poor playing today...I hope Lippi sets those guys straight.

Some where around 27 thousand, I can't remember the exact number. Crowd started booing after some of the shots Italian players were choosing, not even a clear shot and they go firing away for no reason and end up missing the goal by 15 feet.

I did, with a Kodak camera, I got them while they were lined up for the national anthems and some shots of them while playing and one during Lucarelli's penalty kick which I thought he made in and I was wrong lol. When I get the film developed I'll post them.
