Sky Sports News understands that Newcastle United are set to launch a bid for Manchester City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips.

According to sources to the North East club, The Magpies are thought to be preparing a deal worth £16 million to bring the England international to St James' Park.

The offer would include a cash payment of £6 million plus the exchange of two players in striker Craig Bellamy and winger Laurent Robert.

The news comes as reports on Saturday have suggested that Premiership rivals Chelsea are keen to lure Wright-Phillips to Stamford Bridge.

It remains to be seen if such an offer will attract City into letting their most prized asset leave the club.

Reports from France have suggested that Robert has already held talks with Portsmouth over a move to the South Coast and it is uncertain, at this stage, if the former Paris Saint Germain player would be more attracted by a switch to City.

Bellamy, meanwhile, looks certain to leave The Magpies after a very public falling out with Toon boss Graeme Souness, having finished the last campaign with Old Firm giants Celtic.

The Wales international has already attracted the interest of Aston Villa and Birmingham City while new Celtic boss Gordon Strachan is keen to keep Bellamy at Parkhead next term.

Come Newcastle you have 2 get at least one good player this summer else we are goin down next year

Why would he leave Man City for Newcastle? Where's the logic in this move, and how would he benefit from it? He should stay at City for a couple of more years; continue to develop, and then make the big move (i.e. Arsenal, Man Utd, abroad).

It's ambitious but unless we succeed in the inter-toto and get European football then i can't see it happening.

Finally Shepherd is putting his money where his mouth is.

No way I would trade SWP for that.

Newcastle is a bigger and richer club than Man City. They just need a good coach, but they are ambitious, they should be looking to get back into the CL anyways. I would be surprised if Wright-Philips agrees a personal deal though, he seems content at City.

He is very talented, just as much as C.Ronaldo, Joaquin, etc. Very good dribbler. He could very well play for a Spanish team (if they weren't so damn racist) or an Italian.

I wonder if other clubs are going to bid for Wright-Phillips now that Newcastle bid for him. It's kind of like last year with Rooney.

sell him to Real Madrid to play with Owen, Beckham and Woodgate. Plus that would get them off United's back for CRonaldo.

Magpies set to move for Viduka?

Newcastle could be ready for a shock swoop for Middlesbrough's Mark Viduka to solve their attacking problems.

The 29-year-old Australia international managed only 21 appearances and seven goals for the Teessiders last season after his £4.5million summer switch from Leeds, and played just 10 minutes of football after Christmas.

It is understood Boro boss Steve McClaren could be persuaded to part with Viduka at the right price after setting up Aiyegbeni Yakubu's £7.5million move from Portsmouth.

Newcastle have spent the last few months attempting to find replacements for Craig Bellamy, who has been told he will not play for the club under Graeme Souness, and Patrick Kluivert, who has left St James' Park for Valencia.

With skipper Alan Shearer due to finish his playing career at the end of the new season, there is a desperate need to find reinforcements.

Real Madrid's Michael Owen has shown little encouragement and Robbie Keane of Tottenham is a target for several other clubs.

It is uncertain how fans would react to the possibility of signing Viduka, following a dreadful last campaign for the Magpies and limited funding available.

Viduka arrived on Teesside as the only one of McClaren's signings last summer to have cost money, and although he linked well with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink when fit, his lack of action proved frustrating.

Souness, who has also been linked repeatedly with Feyenoord's Dutch striker Dirk Kuyt, has little margin for error as he looks to rebuild the squad he inherited from Sir Bobby Robson.

While he might admire Viduka's ability, he would have to be certain of his fitness before he could formalise any interest.

=====================================

The Magpies are linked with Viduka as well. :(

Exxxxxxxxxxcelllllllllent!

(H)

I would love to get him, he can play up front also to give more spark. I dont see us getting him though. I bet he will either join Chelsea, Pool or Aresnal.

I dont really mind where he goes as long as he plays well and gets the national team starting spot like he deserves.

Barca are apparently tracking his progress also.

continue to develop, and then make the big move (i.e. Arsenal, Man Utd, abroad).
That is, assuming City don't become "big". Let's face it, the club has far more potential then Newcastle, who are on a decline, and with no real manager. It would also not be in the interests of SWP himself to move to pool, chelsea, or scumU, becuase he might not get as much playing time. It pisses me off to see all these rich clubs thieving off on the poorer clubs, and it pissed me to see scumU steal Rooney from Everton. Mind you, if we lose SWP and then shoot into the CL...i wont mind. But until then, SWP had better stay playing at the CofMS.

Chelsea dont really have an out and out right winger. They are linked with right wingers like Bex, Joaquin and SWP. I think he would get a start at Chelsea and even if he doesnt he would still play a fair bit.

I think he should stay at city for this season, then av a blinder when we win the world cup (H), then move to a bigger club that can offer him bigger prizes.

He will still only be 25 after the world cup, plenty of time left in him.

Torontolynx
12-06-2005, 03:40:AM
Not all good players have to move to "bigger" clubs you know.

Besides, City will reward him with something that chelsea could never...stardom. At chelsea, he would not stand out as much, as skilled as he is. At City he's the main attraction. If he's a true fooballer and not a money/glory hunting scoundrel (like oh so many) then he may just stay here... :ewan:

Please elaborate how City have more potential than Newcastle.

1) City have big financial problems. They wont be able to hang on to SWP for much longer and you know it.

2) 52,000 Newcastle fans turn out every week even when we're in mid table! City struggle to sell out for many games. If St James' Park were 100,000 seater stadium, it would be full, i guarantee you that.

3) In terms of merchandising, Newcastle United sell the 2nd most replica shirts in the country 2nd to Manchester United.

Sorry but i fail to see how City have more potential, the only thing i can see is you have a better manager.

City are a much younger team with a better manager and have been on the rise since he took over. Newcastle were ****e all season despite having better players and more money. Your players hate each other and some want to leave, while City have some of the best team chemistry in the EPL, and our players want to stay at City.

and about your whole selling out the stadium and merchandising argument: that's because Newcastle are a very well supported club with a lot of history. HISTORY -> PAST. we're talking about POTENTIAL -> FUTURE

Couldn't have said it better myself. Thank you Rony.

Newcastle are going absolutely nowhere, they're like the New York Rangers of football. Big money, big players, but end up in the bottom half because they are all old geezers and can't play together to save their lives. Having a sh$te manager/coach doesn't help either.

obrien going in defence.. hughes already sold... defence will need a few more players...
bellamy goin.. kluivert gone... ameobi is rubbish, and shearer is playing his last season... so we need like 2/3 strikers... its tragic... so we need like 2 strikers, 4 midfielders, 2 defenders... thats like 8 players, and i honestly cant see us being that active in the market... :nape:

-Macken was sold to Crystal Palace
-when did Stuart Pearce rise to greatness at Newcastle? :|
-City almost DID make Europe, the only reason they didn't was because of a missed penalty by Fowler in injury time... I didn't see newcastle a goal away from Europe :ewan:
-City have more youth potential than Newcastle, not including SWP: Onouha, Flood, Croft, Jordan, BWP, Kasper Schmeichel, etc.

rhizome17
13-06-2005, 09:29:PM
Shaun will stay another season unless the bid is big enough. If there is a bid in the 18-20 range we should just take it. Looks like newcastle won't be getting him anyway, and SWP knows it would be a very dumb move. There are only two clubs worth going to for his career, and that is Arsenal and Chelsea. Personally i would rather see him at Arsenal, there is a spiritual dimension to that move. A move to Chelsea would be good in terms of footballing development but there is a chance he wouldn't get the starts he needs to displace Beckham from the England team. If Wenger wants to offer a substantial amount, be my guest. But I really think we will have him for another season.

Newcastle have previously stated that they want to bring in big name players. A squad overhaul was inevitable as they were not matching the aspirations of the ever so loyal supporters.

Souness wants 6 players and preferably with experience.

http://skysports.planetfootball.com/list.asp?hlid=270491&CPID=8&CLID=4&lid=&title=Souness+wants+six+players&channel=Premiership

Ive got a feeling u will still be in for AJ from Palace. Kapo is another one but surely a centre half is a priorty. Newcastle will always score goals, just fix up the defence and things will pick up. With 25 million squid or so to spend he could wheel in some good deals. Souey shud take note of what Sam Allardyce and McClaren have done.

Chelsea to test Man City resolve with SWP offer

tribalfootball.com - June 15, 2005

Chelsea are ready to make an £18 million bid for Manchester City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips.
Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd tested the water over the weekend with a cheeky cash-plus-players bid for the England winger, says the People.

Shepherd was told to forget it by City supremo John Wardle after suggesting a deal involving Craig Bellamy, Laurent Robert and a small amount of cash.

But Stamford Bridge insiders are sure they will get their man although City hope not.
