I need a backup for Makelele

If they haven't been snapped up yet, what about, Kompany, Vanden Borre or Freddy Guarin (not sure if he'll get a work permit though)? Or there's the one that Cody found, David Bystron...even though he's a MC he has all the qualities of a good DMC. If you want to spend a bit more, there's Mascherano, David Pizzaro (although he's not great at tackling), Demechelis, Blasi, Pedretti etc. You might want to check out the Defensive Player Guide sticky too.

Mascherano or Guarín. As I expect you'll be wanting a work permit, Mascherano is the best bet. Most expensive one too. Just under £7M should work.

Tim Borowski. Quite cheap(1m to 2m) if you want to buy him instantly but you can also sign him for free in the january transfer window.

David Pizarro has always been good for me.

Well I tried signing Mashareno and that was my first target. I bid for him $12.7M and Villareal bid $8M, and he goes to Villareal. So yea, I'll try to get Bystron, or someone else.

Pander is a full back, not a center defensive mid.

get Joey Barton. He's fairly young and good all around, dont think he has anything below 10. You can get him for around 1 mil I believe. (In my game I got him in 2nd season for 1.3 mil)

If you're Chelsea then none of these cheap ass options will do, you need a superstar. I suggest using Parker as a temporary stop gap and then when you get your next boost of money look for a superstar like Xabi Alonso or Gerrard. Alonso has a 30 Million Euro release clause, but he won't leave Liverpool usually for a year. I don't know what Gerrard will cost you, but you'll probably have to save up or spend all of your starting funds on him.

Those are my two suggestions as I don't think Arse will sell Viera for any amount of money.

Essien is listed as AMRC, but his hidden stats tell that he is also DM with attributes of 18-20, cant remember which. To prove this he was really ace when I played him in a defensive role at Lyon, and he could fill the rightwing aswell so he is a really good option.

Milovan Mirosevic becomes a cultured winger after a season or two and should be relatively cheap (~£3m), only thing is though he might not get a work permit or there's Mauro Esposito but he costs a lot more at £6.75m.

I've sold Duff (for 12 million euros plus Rio!!!!! If he accepted the Barcelona contract it would have been straight up for Eto'o), Cole, Gudjohnson, Babayaro, and Cudicini. Oh, and I'm bringing in Podolski at the end of the year (my first purchase, but I wanted him in Cologne for a year).

Yeah, injuries aren't my friend. I paid 57 million euros for Gerrard. Until I got up there, Liverpool didn't accept anything or even negotiate.

Pedretti is a great backup. Does not ask for too much time since he is still young. If you have Makelele then I am guessing you have the cash, but Pedretti wont cost more than 6 mill. Kompany is another good backup.

Cech isn't as good as Lastuvka. After I sent Cech to Arsenal the news report was "Fans happy to see Cech go". So I'm confident I made the right choice.

I bought Nigel de Jong for his min fee release clause of 13.25M euros because his versatility is very important to me when I play a flat back 4. Gotta love a 21 year old insanely talented D RLC.

Scott Parker is the MAN! Gotta love the guy who you can plug into any central midfield hole in case of injuries and never complains. That's why I held onto Geremi for so long too. I think it's amazing that both of us ended up with Crouch too. Weird.

Baptista is a gem. He's a DMC on my game because I don't have any of the roster updates installed (I think he's an AM/F C in the updates), but he is amazing.

Let's just say that when you have him and Sneijder on the bench (as I do), your midfield is pretty good.

I use Euros. Dollars are just stupid because you don't typically see transfer fees reported in dollars. Although sometimes if I play in Mexico I'll use Pesos or something like that.

Its prety much the same in value in FM so only the symbol is different anyway

Just won the Champions League to cap off the 06-07 season. We won the league with 100 points and the Champions League, but that's it. Adriano scored 39 goals this season, 8 less than last year although he didn't play as much and I'm sure Torres' presence lifted some of the pressure from him.

We made money this year inexplicably because I didn't just go out and spend everything I had because I honestly didn't know how I would improve the squad.

So far here's what I've lined up for the summer. Comming in on a free are Fabrizio Miccoli from Fiorentina and Daniele Bonera from Parma. I'm paying 6.5M euros for Stewart Downing. Leaving is Christiano Ronaldo for 90M euros to Inter and Makelele for free to newly relegated Fiorentina. With the 90M plus what I get from Abromovic I plan on grabing Vicente from Valencia to put opposite of Joaquin on my left wing and hopefully Iker Casillas. I might look for another defender and sell William Gallas because he turns 30 this summer. Later tonight when I finish with the summer transfers I'll post the 07/08 squad.

Yeah same here...with that many big-name players to pick only 11 from, some of them are bound to become unhappy.

No because just about everyone I have signed, I made sure they agreed to be squad rotation players. Everyone on the team is squad rotation and happy, at the worst they just want a bigger contract every now and then. The guys who aren't rotation are of course the studs, Ronaldinho, Adriano, Lampard, and Joaquin.

In terms of youth, well I do agree a little and I've started to think about bringing in some more youth, Cesc Fabregras out at Arse wanted to be an important team player, so I couldn't sign him, but Stuart Downing is a really good player, and there's this 20 year old at Leeds who just got his first two caps for england with a 6M release clause who I'll go after at the end of the season.

Does anyone have a really good tactic? The one I used for the past two years got cracked by the AI :(

oh come on, you've got to invest in ahmed yahiaou from marseille :( He's a beast of a youth, only about 17 at the start of the game. Might set you back about 10 mill but he's well worth it.

Talking about tactics, i owned in the CL, Premiership and FA Cup with just a simple 4-4-2, with the two wide midfielders making runs to the AMR and AML posistions, with a few alterations in the instructions area.

Downing is quality (Y)...been getting 8s and 9s on a consistent basis for me. That Leeds player wouldn't be Aaron Lennon would it, Nim? Oh and I second Yahiaou, especially as your squad doesn't appear to have an out and out DM (!).

Nim, how many seasons does your spending-spree game usually last? mine doesn't last long, and I was wondering how you keep yourself playing season after season. (if you go over at least 2 seasons that is)

Is Micoli preforming well for you? I play for Viola right now and he is roller coasting for some reason. First season he got like 4 goals and 7 assists, then he scores 16 goals and 12 asists in the second season and now he is back to only 3 goals and 3 assists in 14 games (I am in the middle of the season right now). Got no idea whats up with that, his stats are amzing, showen as well as hidden, and he still misses crap load of opportunitis. Regano scores more then he does, and Regano is 32 right now))

I don't play him too much, he was free and his stats are just amazing. He can be brilliant at times, and disappear at other times. I'm just about to wrap this game up for the most part, it was a fun time though.
