GB to enter combined team

"Fifa president Sepp Blatter has confirmed that a Great Britain football team will compete in the 2012 Olympics and their participation will not affect the home nations' separate representation on the game's world governing body.

Blatter said Fifa has given written guarantees that fielding a host British team will not interfere with England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland maintaining their separate identities.

He told a media briefing in London: "We have confirmed in writing that they have to provide a Great Britain team for the 2012 Olympics but the four British associations will not lose the rights and privileges acquired back in 1947.

"They will play with one team but it is up to them how they do it. It can be a mixed team, it can be from just one of the home nations, whatever they want to do."

Scotland have been most reluctant to do anything that might compromise their separate position within Fifa but Blatter said he had reassured the Scottish FA on the issue.

Britain qualify automatically as Olympic hosts but it is unlikely there will be a British Olympic football team beyond 2012 because no united British team plays in the the European Under-21 championships which act as the qualifying tournament."

i think the confusion was before is that the British Lions, the rugby team DOES include Rep. Ireland players, even though Rep. Ireland isn't actually part of Britain.

No. the british home nations simply don't qualify. they could play in the U21 euro championship but if stay in the first 3 the 4th take their spot in the olympics.

Actually, this isn't such a bad idea IF you extend it somewhat beyone simply having a Great britain team. Football could be the flagship sport of the Olympics if they have a team representing each of the rings (which represent a continent each I believe). Obviously there would be selection issues and bickering between nations and so forth, quite possibly leading to actual wars in South America and Africa, but imagine the quality of the individual teams (although I fear Oceania would be the expected easy beats, followed by Asia). And picking a combined European team would be an absolute nightmare for whoever got the job, given the number of countries involved. And it would be in keeping with the Olympic spirit of togetherness with competition. China, the Koreas and Japan in one team (H); Venezuela and the USA, Chile and Bolivia, Pakistan and India and so forth.

Anyway, Denis is just negative cos he knows the Scotland would be there as the orange boys (H)

Stalteri plays RB and RM, and hed definately step right into the USA NT starting 11. His track record speaks for itself, and hes better than any RB or RM you guys have. Too bad he's the only player who'd make the roster (De Guzman and Hume in a year maybe). Radzinski has never done anything too special for Canada (him just showing up for games is a rarity), but that could probably be the fault of the tactics over anything else.


Well, I guess you can also consider Owen Hargreaves as well, considering this wank was born and raised in Calgary. To think of it, no Americans have matched the sucess in Europe that Hargreaves and Stalteri have enjoyed :D
