View Full Version : Embarassed to be American? F*cking right.

What the hell was that? Did anyone watch the loss to Costa Rica? Well, if you didn't the United States sliped into the non Qualifying part of the crappiest World Cup Qualifying group (obviously Oceania doesn't count because no team ever goes from there).

I fully believe that the only creative player born in America, and with the talent to quickly create chances is Landon Donovan. Unfortunately for us, he is 19, just abandoned Leverkusen because he didn't get a game, and joined the MLS, a league where improvement is a non-issue.

Injuries are definitely a factor here, but seriously, how much of a factor can it be. If England loses Scholes, Cole, and Owen, they still have players to step into those roles, the US should be the same. I mean, just because Reyna(the only American I have full confidence in), Josh Wolff, and Ante Razov aren't on the squad, there should be others stepping in. There was no one.

Cobi Jones. I have never seen a player hyped more, across a larger area than this guy, and he is pure ****e. He can't pass, he has no touch, he has no judgement or creativity, he doesn't have speed, and yet he plays in every game. I hate to say it to the Cobes, but his prime was 8 years ago, and it is really sad to see someone who can't keep up their skill level to the age of 31. Pathetic.

The Tikos could do no wrong, and now I will turn my analyzing attention to that, with only a few more references to how I hate this team. Alfonso Solis has a Gerrard-esque long shot, and Friedel was equal to it early, which I was suprised.

--Editors rant: Why does Brad Friedel play ANYWHERE!!! Kasey Keller is 10 times the keeper that Friedel is, and I'm sure Blackburn could "pry" Mark Tyler away from Peterborough for about 5k to replace this arrogant fvck! He is such a hot headed ****, that I found myself screaming at the tele often. A penalty call for Costa Rica (there is at least one penalty in every US game, for real) brought him off his line for about 10 minutes and eventually Steward was penalized for dissent with a yellow, but I wished Brad was given a red, so we could get a real keeper in there. My dad, who watches the games, but doesn't know much about the sport was wondering about him, and I had to explain to him, and then complained in general a few times, about how Blackburn would have beaten Man U, but Mr. Posh Spice, as my dad says, caught the dumb bastard 90 meters off his line.

Ok, back to the game. Another impressive player was Fonseca, no not the crap player at Juve, but the guy in the Costa Rican league. He was brilliant on the right of the midfield, and in the center, and scored both goals. Wanchope was his usual crap self, hyped like a mofo before the game, then performs like crap against the US. He's like the Joe Cole of CONCACAF when he plays the US. Ronald Gomez didn't really impress me, but still deserved an 8 match rating because like every other Tiko, he was given acres of space. Oh no...

--Editors rant #2: The one problem that I see with the US is that there is a sense of not caring. Typical arrogance from us. We think we are the best so don't do crap. The big problem that plagues our national team is that we aren't aggressive worth ****. I shouted at the tele at least 20 times for so and so to "win the ball", and "make a tackle". That is terrible, it's like we don't want the ball. Wanchope had miles of clear space, same with Ronald Gomez, the two wings, and EVEN the two central midfielders. There is also no compression at the back. I remember last year, or two years ago sometime in the CL late stages where they showed a picture of the Valencia box when the ball was 20-25 yards out. There were a minimum of 9 players back, and there may have been 11. For some reason, the US plays a psudo-offside trap. Even when the ball is 20 yards out, the flat back 4 or 5 (a retarded strategy, there is no point in playing flatback 5, there should be defensive wingers compensating for a lack of attacking wingers running box to box like Lizerazu) is at the 18 yard box. 5 times, the ball came through, and the US barely escaped with a wide shot, or a slip, or a lucky tackle, whatever. I hate watching the US play. I have a theory that it is poison to watch the US before you have to play a match yourself, because you might adapt some of those tactics and habits.

Finally, at the end of the game, the announcer said, "baring in mind injuries up front for the US, what changes do you think should be made in a few months?" I came up with about 100 different ideas.

- Play a 4-4-2, the limited minds of our players can only comprehend that.

- Bring in players that should be given their chance. DaMarcus Beasley is young, but lightning fast on the wing, and a lefty, Frankie Hejduk is the best winger we have got, and he isn't on the team, where are the players from abroad that are good? I WANT JOHN O'BRIEN OF AJAX!!! I WANT BERHALTHER TO PLAY!!!

- Take out the trash. Cobi Jones, Preki, Jovan Kirovski, Brad Friedel, Jeff Agoos, and the rest of the bottom of the pack MLS players.

- Coach please Mr. Arena. You have tenative players here, the day before a match, do a light practice session dedicated purely to tackling and attacking the ball, you will be pleasently supprised.

hehe. I read a similar match review today already from a Welsh guy who wrote how bad his team performed...

I don't know why I didn't catch the game - it was played today evening on the Pacific coast, I reckon? If yes, then I really missed something... I really didn't get into USA nat. team lately, mainly because of an attitude like: "if we draw away and win at home, we will be fine", or "we can afford a break today".. CONCACAF is the easiest qualifying - even easier than Oceania. The best Oceanian team (usually Australia) has to play 2 very important games against similar opponents (last time it was Iran) to qualify, and it all depends on those two games, and the Oceanian team "cannot afford a break". When a CONCACAF team loses to a team that is similar in strength and level, they still have all the chances to get through because there are 3 teams from CONCACAF that qualify... The usual opponent that is stronger than USA in CONCACAF is Mexico (this year they sucked, but usually they don't), and guess what? If US losses both games to them, they stilll have all the chances to get through...

Hey I am from New Zealand but follow all soccer but have a bit of an interest in american soccer and often watch their internationals and MLS games which i get on my pay tv company I was dissapointed with todays game but i still believe USA have potential to be a good side and I agree with you that Landon Donavan is something special but he needs to move to europe to prove his worth. Good luck for the US or the rest of there WC2002 qualifying campaign hope to see them is Japan/Korea and BTW don't mock oceanian football Australia can still make the cup.

Honestly...the USA is lucky...if it wasnt for that espectacular first half of qualifying...they would be in deep trouble here. Beleive it or not...usa's best friend now is Mexico....I beleive that Mexico will defeat Costa Rica in Costa rica next month. The USA HAS TO WIN against Jamaica and T&T...if they lose one of these games...they are out of the WC...but if they win..they are in...why? because Mexico will play the last game in Azteca Stadium agains Honduras...who has never beaten or tied Mexico in Mexico City EVER. So if Mexico gets the win and the USA wins the last 2 games...they are in no matter what. Unless they F up and lose agains Jamaica then Good bye.

but Honduras are not the same team of the past...and that is the same thing that was said when Costa rica visted Mexico city...

Mexico have pulled a 180 since they beat the USA, and in my opinion they can, and will still win the CONCACAF section.

I would say that the US is unlucky rather than lucky. They are not playing with the same team now than when they were winning the group....without Mathis, Wolff, Reyna, O'Brien and McBride we lack most of our creative and offensive players. Landon Donavan has taken advantage of this opportunity to emerge as a quality player but he lacks the experience of the others such as McBride. As for Kasey Keller i agree that he is a far better keeper than Friedel, but does not have a 1st team spot, which makes Friedel the starter. The only reason this decision is being questioned is because Friedel hasnt played exceptionally well. You are too quick to second guess these decisions. It is unrealistic to think that the US could get a win or even a tie in Costa Rica with our depleted squad. Luckily the last 2 matches are against weaker teams. Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.

As for Mexico, they have shown to be one of the better teams in the group as of late, but I wont be rooting for them against Costa Rica. Costa Rica is already qualified, The US needs Mexico and Honduras to lose to gain a spot, which i expect to happen. Despite their recent struggles i believe the US will qualify, and when they get to the cup you will be seeing the team from the earlier qualifying matches rather than the last three.

Another note:
For the US to qualify it must:
Win the final 2 games
and one of the following
Mexico must lose or tie in Costa Rica
or
Mexico must lose or tie at home against Honduras
or
Honduras must lose or tie at home against Trinidad and Tobago
or
Honduras must lose or tie in Mexico

I believe that the US will win its last 2...and that Mexico will lose to Costa Rica and Honduras will lose to Mexico, putting the US through.

Yes I have mentioned the injuries, I have an entire paragraph dedicated to it.

McBride is **** by the way, I prefer Ante Razov over him ANY DAY OF THE WEEK.

In my mind, our best lineup is this....

GK Kasey Keller
DC Eddie Pope (by far the best we have)
DC Mike Petke
DR ???? we really don't have any quality players here
DL ???? ditto
DM John O'Brien (he plays at Ajax, but hasn't found his nitch, still the concensus is that he is a good player)
ML Ben Olsen
MR Frankie Hejduk (since when was he dropped from the squad? I missed the memo :rolleyes :)
AM Claudio Reyna
ST Ante Razov
ST Josh Wolff

And Mathis off the bench if John O'Brien can't produce the goods.

nimrietz, i like your lineup. but, i would have landon donovan coming off the bench also.

about brian mcbride, he might not be as skilled as josh wolff, but he is such an aggresive player and a force in the air, i think you have to have him out their. he will win every ball in the air. we need a plyer like that, because ernie stewart and josh wolff cant win any head balls.

oh yea, cobi jones is one of the fastest players on the team. i am positive about this. i heard one of the commentators say last year, that he had the fastest time on the 40 yard dash. but, now i bet landon donovan and josh wolff are the fastest.

US will make it anyway.

After attending the USA-Honduras match, I became a Honduras fan. Love 'em.

The American team has problems but they'll qualify anyway.

I just hope that Honduras can make it...

I want to amend that lineup a tad. Hejduk can come off the bench to play either wing, move Ben Olsen over to the right, and squeeze Eddie Lewis of Fulham on the left wing. Why isn't HE called up!! I HATE Bruce Arena. Not because of his personality or tactical choices(to a major extent), but because he forgets to call up players that play in Europe. Razov, Lewis, and O'Brien get shafted because they play in REAL leagues.

The team is deeper than ever since Arena became coach. You may not like McBride but he is far better than Kirovski and Joe Max Moore. Lastly, youre crazy if you dont include Clint Mathis in your ideal lineup.

Reyna is better than Mathis, end of story.

Also note that I haven't mentioned Kirovski and Moore, except when I said in the initial post that Kirovski should be out the door.

I watched the game on ESPN and basically, Costa Rica dominated the entire FIRST HALF...but on the second half...BOTH TEAMS had their chances.

Well that's how I saw the game.

But dont' worry my fellow americans...you guys are in World Cup by logic, since the U.S. will be facing in their last 2 matches the worst 2 teams of this years CONFUT (EX-CONCACAF) region.

But we MEXICANS have it tough, same with the hondurian people.

MY CONCLUSION:

COSTA RICA: IN

U.S.: IN (by logic)

MEXICO & HONDURAS (undecided yet)
