View Full Version : Serie A: Juventus vs Inter "Derby D'Italia" [P+R]

Well the first meeting between the Serie A powerhouses.

UEFA.COM

What a difference a year makes for Roberto Mancini. Twelve months ago his FC Internazionale Milano side were struggling out of the Serie A starting blocks. Four draws from their first five league matches marked the start of a frustrating season playing catch-up with eventual Scudetto winners Juventus FC.

Strong start
With one season under his belt as Inter coach, Mancini appears to have found the answer. Inter's propensity for draws cost them dearly last season. Eighteen in Serie A kept them out of the title hunt, but things are different this time round. The Nerazzurri have won four out of their five Serie A games, as well as all four of their UEFA Champions League fixtures, including qualifying.

Juve challenge
Thanks to their excellent early form, Mancini believes his team is well-positioned to wrestle first place from Juventus FC in the 'Derby d'Italia' in Turin on Sunday. "We're playing quite well right now and there's not a lot of difference between us and Juventus," he said.

Rotation key
Much of Inter's early-season success can be attributed to the club's summer signings. Luís Figo, Walter Samuel, Santiago Solari and David Pizarro give Mancini's squad real depth, allowing him to rotate players to prevent fatigue. With one eye on Juve, Adriano and Dejan Stankovic were rested for Wednesday's win against Rangers FC.

'Very strong'
Figo of all the new arrivals has perhaps adapted quickest to life at Inter. He is looking forward to his side's greatest test of the season so far. "Juventus are very strong but I'm optimistic," he told uefa.com. "We're playing well and we're working hard to improve game after game. We know it will be very difficult on Sunday but we're confident we're at least a match for Juventus."

New atmosphere
Mancini will welcome back Juan Sebastián Verón from suspension on Sunday so Pizarro may start on the bench, but the Chilean takes it in his stride. "I would like to play as often as possible, but I know it's not easy at a club like Inter," he told uefa.com. "I'm here to help the team win trophies and my objective is to be ready whenever I'm called on."

Vital spirit
That emphasis on team spirit will be vital as Inter meet a Juventus side on a run of seven straight wins. The match will also see the return of Patrick Vieira to the Bianconeri starting lineup - the Frenchman was suspended from Champions League duties in midweek and will be keen to return to the fray after a stunning start at the Stadio Delle Alpi.

Trezeguet key
Juve coach Fabio Capello will look to Vieira and his France team-mate David Trezeguet to help end a run of consecutive defeats by Mancini's side. Trezeguet has put last season's injury problems behind him with five goals already this campaign and he is intent on adding another to end Inter's winning run.

'Main rivals'
"We lost our last two games in Turin against Inter, in the league last season and in the Italian Super Cup this summer, that's why the game on Sunday is so important to us," Trezeguet told uefa.com. "I think Inter are our main rivals for the Scudetto."

Dual aims
Mancini, however, will not be going to Turin just to defend. With the season still in its infancy, victory would have a significant psychological impact. "A win would be important because it would give us peace of mind going forward," Mancini said. "After all, we don't just think about the domestic league. I hold the Champions League very dear and it's something Inter haven't won in a long time."

FSC is gay... they are showing Lecce-Cagliari instead :|

Juve look like the superior team right now but Mancini seems to have found a good balance with his squad.

Will be a tough test as usual ... won't mean too much in terms of who wins the league but its a matter of prestige.

We'll know the lineups and stuff tomorrow I guess.. Juve have Vieira back and pretty much everyone at their disposal apart from the long term absentees.

Should be a good game... Juve haven't beaten Inter for some time now head to head but were unlucky last time... Time to set the record straight.

I really think Inter might pull the victory here. Just a hunch, I guess, but like Mancini says, a win would be a huge shot in the arm so early in the season. Juve look to be on excellent form right now, but maybe Inter's boys will rise to the occasion....

Ill pick Cambiasso to get the winner

Typical Italian matchup... I don't expect an offensive onslaught by either team... Good game though, final score 1-1.

Actually if you've seen Juve's games recently, they have attacked a lot throughout the game. Even after being couple of goals up they keep attacking. Wouldn't be surprised if the home side comes out firing. One things for sure, Juve won't sit back and play a counter-attacking game during the initial stages at least.

I expect it to be an awesome game regardless of the score. Both teams have looked brilliant in Serie A. I give the slight edge to Inter because they have Adriano. The former Real Madrid players may also want some payback. :hit:

Adriano has been sorta shaky these last few games (ever since that asshole Parriera (or whatever the hell is name is) called him up and made him play two full games). Hopefully Il Imperatore can snap out of it and bang 3 goals in for a hat trick. But I'm really expecting Martins to cause havoc and do the scoring.

Veron will probably be back (instead of Pizarro) and I definately expect Cambiasso, Figo, and Stankovic to play. JC will be in goal while the backline will included Favalli, Samuel, Materazzi, and Cordoba.

Winning this game won't be easy, but the team has done it before. Both teams may be playing well, but I don't expect to see a 3-2 game. Whoever wins it will probably do it with a single goal (1-0)

Unfortunately Veron is out for this match, but luckily the management for saw such problems and brought in Pizarro who is more than capable to get things done. I'm counting on him to come up huge in this match and really control the pace. Those deadly passes of his will hopefully be enough to lead us to victory.

Juve are in form, but so are we. This will be a tight high tension match as always and I'm betting we'll win it with a low score, like 1-0 or something similar.

Hopefully Adriano brings his best in this match because I bet he'll be doubled in Juve's box and will really have to distribute the ball, and then keep moving to get the ball back so he can score. I'm hoping Martins plays in this one from the start, because I'm looking for him to be our main threat.

Overall the defense has to play tight, Cordoba doesn't have to go up much (which he usually doesn't do anywayz) and hopefully JC has a couple bagfuls of wonderful saves handy.

All I hope is that the boys get it done, convincing fashion or not.

After watching 2 hours of disaster I'm pissed off. Our attack was pathetic. BTW whose Pizarro? We had a player on the pitched named Pizarro today? Wow, didn't see him.

The team played poorly, but it wasn't Juve's dominance that did us in. The team never showed up today. Sure they were on the field, but only the likes of JC, Favalli, and perhaps Figo really came to play.

The defense was shaky. Every time Nedved or Ibra had the ball at his feet in our half I was nervous. Luckily Matrix took Ibra out or things could have been worse.

Stankovic overall was poor. He had some nice touches but where were the crosses?

Figo was alright though, he was one of our few players who was lively. Especially when he switched to the left wing. I still remember that play where he was literally playing with 2 Juve defenders by faking and cutting back until he finally passed it off.

Chino was soooooo close to scoring it hurt to see Abbiati stop it. I would have loved to see him or any other freakin person on our team score.

After Juve scored the first goal I knew we were finished. It's like the side was drugged, especially Adriano. Good grief. Juve has a good defense, but where is his dominance? Where's our number 1 striker? Where's he unstoppable Imperatore self? Is it just me or is Adriano not a big game player? I don't remember him playing well against Juve before, can someone remind me?

From the get go I was hoping that Martins would be our main threat, and even he let me down. But you could tell he was trying. He ran for balls and got fouled repeatedly.

BTW what the hell was wrong with the linesman? 3 bad calls, 3 clear chances for us to score, 1 big chance for us to win the match at 3-2.

The MOM award should be shared between JC and Matrix. JC for stopping some really hard shots that could have made the scoreline even more embarrassing and for Materazzi for taking out Ibrahimovic.

Overall a very bad night. Dismal to say the least. Pathetic.

Sadly after a row of poor games from Adriano I'm starting to have second thoughts about Chelsea's offer....

SB9Dragon
02-10-2005, 10:22:PM
how did ivan cordoba play btw??

I've definately seen better. It's really time we move him back to the middle of the defense. Materazzi gives up to many fouls, and unlike other games where teams don't capitalize, today we lost due to 2 freekicks.

LOL, owned. You guys didn't own us in any shape or form, though you did own that asshole of a linesman. 3 damn clear chances to score, and 3 f*cking bad calls to boot.

You guys didn't win because you owned this match or because you dominated. First off Adriano's brain must still be in Brazil cause I don't know what the hell he was doing on the pitch today. Next off most of our players didn't come to play, they only came to prance around on a wet field for the fun of it.

Atleast 1 guy did his job though, Materazzi who took off Ibra before he could inflict any more damage. Oh well. You guys won, but you lost Ibra in the process. Suck on that.
i'll give you a bad call, materazzi avoiding the death penalty by electric chair

you should lose that assasin for half the season on suspension

and guess what? inter are sh*t, suck on that

You guys need to stop talking out of your asses and actually watch Materazzi's challenge on Ibra. It wasn't blatantly evil. He didn't go all out to injure Ibra, and I truly believe it was a mistake.

BTW don't play that "were innocent" bullsh!t. Juve players aren't angels either. I can't even count how many times Martins was fouled. And does last years Derby D'Italia ring a bell? You Juve lovers sure don't remember when Ibra was running amuck huh? Remember his foul on Cordoba? Of course you don't. Cause your all blind to what YOUR own players do.

LOL, 1989. Ouch. What a painful come back. Is that suppose to hurt? That shows how stupid and dimwitted some of you are, simply to go out of subject to try to strengthen your point.

You silly, silly Juve fans. Keep barking away. Hissy fits for all of you. :taz:

Good grief, Ice. Chill. I'll accept I may had been a bit harsh in saying Materazzi was MOM for taking Ibra out. I was pissed off for goodness sake. Fans of losing teams always rant about something. But I'm not taking back anything else I said. Especially when one of your own says that Materazzi was "killing" people. That's BS, and you know it.

So what's the point of arguing? I'll forever hate Juve and you guys will forever be against Inter. I'm surprised you guys are so shocked about me being against Ibra. Bet you hypocrites wouldn't be playing the same tune if Vieira broke Materazzi's leg. :D

Im not even gonna critisize Inter's attack (or lack of) from tonights match, because that would be discrediting an outstanding defensive display by Juve. Ive never seen such a sound team, its gonna be tough for Inter and Milan to compete. I dont think we'll have a parallel of the ridiculous gap seen in the EPL, but i hope it doesnt get outta hand.

.....

Ive been saying this for the past couple weeks, but why does Mancio choose to play Cordoba out of position instead of playing Ze Maria at RB?? Its such a boneheaded call by him, and my only explanation is that he doesnt seem to have the coglione to bench one of Samuel, Materazzi or Cordoba. At least in Juve's case (RB), they dont really have too much alternatives, but Corboda is in no way a natural right back.

Other than that, nothing else to really say, Juventus showed their class today and Inter couldnt match it. That, and Adriano pulled a 'Thierry Henry'.

.... Maybe its been all season, but i just noticed it today. why did the refs have a pumpkin on their sleeve?

SB9 please stop talking. You are embarrassing my favorite team. If the referee was shown the tackle again Materazzi would have been thrown out. Now I hate Juventus with all my heart, but how could you say that you feel his tackle was not all that bad. Come on man, you must be sore about the game, but so am I and it makes me sick to see a fan talk the way you are. But what I can't understand either is how some people say that Juventus owned us. I feel that both teams played evenly and the two well-excecuted free kicks were the only thing between them. Amazing game from the Juve back line. Adriano disappeared from the field because of the way the backs shut him down. All we can do now is realize that there is still 32 games left and focus on the future not sit here and argue why we lost. But please SB9, shut your mouth because, once again, you are embarrassing my favorite club. Good game Juve and hopefully we will be able to catch you later on.

i only watched the second half, so im not gonna comment on the game as a whole. in the second half, i felt Inter was the better side, but because Juve let them. Inter couldnt hit one decent header from all those crosses, their shots apart from the freekicks didnt look dangerous. one thing i dont get tho, why is Mutu behind Zalayeta in the substitution "rank"? Inter isnt spanish... :)

i feel proud of my juventini. i said to my best mate yesterday this is the team that can take juve to 3 stars. i cant wait till juve play ac milan. i hope it is at the san siro. if juve can beat ac milan at the san siro it will be a great way to start the first half of the season.

its actually really great to see juve starting this season like last season. juve went 9 games and then lost to reggina i certainly hope juve continue to win. beating a scudetto contender i s always morale boosting.

amazing this is we have converted 3 free kicks from outside the box, whereas last season nedved scored our only one against bologna. juve still know how to score from the set piece which is great.

btw im glad no1 has mentioned juve are ref favoured. great to see that the match juve played was on their merits as a team. something that i havent seen on these forums before.

to all juventini we should be proud! ac milan u are next!
