allright, I have a lot of info on them..

Anzhi Makhachkala is located near Dagestan, a Muslim-populated "state" of Russia on the Caucasus, RIGHT near Chechnya (where the terrible war is still going on). Dagestan is a relatively safe place, ESPECIALLY Makhachkala - all ethnic Russians, foreigners are not afraid of going to play there - it is NOT a racially tense region by ANY means. I do not know why the Rangers cannot get anyone to insure them to go there, they shouldn't be any different.

Anzhi is a relatively young club (formed in 1990, I think), and they just got promoted 2 years ago for the first time; this closing season in Russian Premiership is their 2nd. They were an enigma - usually in the offseason, when a newly promoted team from the the first division gets promoted to the Premiership, they nearly change their whole squad in order to get better. Anzhi did NOT do that, and everybody thought they will relegate and struggle badly. Heh, INSTEAD they were like Ipswich in the Premiership - had a VERY successful season, and BARELY missed the 3rd place. BARELY.

they've got a few good international players - a few Belorusssian internationals, and a Cameroonian international - named Billong. This guy is an amazing defender who joins the attack a lot, and the crowd in Makhachkala love him. And he is a Muslim, too. Other players I would name is Narvik Sirkhaev, an Azerbaijani who has Russian citizenship, a left winger, and the captain. This guy is the leader, a life-long Anzhi player. Then there is Ilia Tsymbalar - a player who had his best years with Spartak Moscow in early-mid 90s. He just joined Anzhi and already made an impression - he is a brilliant passer. Spartak got rid of him last year because he was getting too old.. On the right side, there is another Caucasus guy (not ethnic Russian) - named Agalarov. VERY fast, crosses the ball well.

This season Anzhi is doing worse than last season, by far - in the mid-table. They lost their two legioners, a Yugo and a Bosnian to CSKA for about a million bucks for each - relatively big amount of money for Russia. Thus, they are relatively weaker than last year.

But, they have a very good crowd that is disciplined in one way, and NUTS in the other.. They love their club in Dagestan..

I really like them, and they are one of my favs in the Russian league.. But lately their results do not impress, so I guess Glasgow should have no trouble bypassing to the nest round. But it's football - anything can happen, and underestimation of an opponent had hurt a lot of teams..

PS. I made a mistake there - Makhachkala is located IN Dagestan, not NEAR Dagestan.. I wonder what I was thinking ...

now the Rags are refusing to fly to Dagestan.. come on, guys.. it probably is first and last time people in Makhachkala will ever see an European play...

anyway, the UEFA is on Anzhi's side, it seems. Hopefully they will stay the same.
