2006 FIFA WC Developer Diary 1

By: Eduardo Euscate
Monday, 13 March, 2006

EA published today the first weekly developer diary, which focuses on the stadiums in this game.

Developer Diary - Stadiums
Week 1

What were main focuses for your design?

The great thing about the FIFA World Cup is the fact that it always brings new stadiums that are built for the event.

The first thing we had to do was make sure we had all the reference material possible to build them accurately and efficiently. In addition to acquiring footage from our licensed partners, we sent photographers out to take photos of each stadium.

In many cases we took hundreds of photos to get absolutely accurate reference ranging from the way rafters look and the lighting standards on the pitch through to images of the bolts and hinges on the seats.

FIFA also gave us reference of how the graphics, such as the hoardings, and colours would be used in each stadium, so when people play the game, it will be accurate to the real event.

Also, as this is the FIFA World Cup and the biggest celebration of football every four years, we wanted to ensure we captured the festival atmosphere and ensuring our new 3D crowd to look and behave like the real thing. Fans throw streamers and confetti, as well as holding up giant flags in the crowd.

What were the challenges?

When you put a lot of detail into things like the players, their kits, and the pitch they play on - that doesn't leave a lot of room for things like balloons, fireworks, confetti, streamer, and flags.

We had to build our stadiums in a way that the best parts of the geometry were shown in gameplay cameras. That means putting less detail in the last row of the upper tier of seats, as opposed to the lower level seats, and paying attention to things like staff and photographers seen standing around the perimeter of the pitch.

When you're dealing with a video game, you've only got so much display memory that you can use at one time - so we had to re-think where to put the details in stadium. The end result is a great looking stadium, with lots of effects and a party atmosphere.

What technical tricks did you employ?

Aside from putting less polygons and detail in to the areas you don't see a lot in gameplay, we also worked on a new lighting engine for the game. We have day, night and dusk lighting conditions, with dusk being the most dramatic.

The sun will shine through the stadium gaps and cast accurately coloured shadows on both the pitch and the crowd. Even the flags hanging in the rafters cast coloured shadows on the crowd as our artificial sun shines through them. We also used depth of field to help focus on key areas of the stadium when viewing gameplay and the cut-scenes. This way we focus the gamers’ attention on the things that look best in each situation. Even our goal net has new physics applied, so each shot into the net will look more accurate than before.

Expect more developer diaries in the upcoming weeks.

It's the Australian Cover, which in the past was the same as the North American one, but for FIFA 06 it was the same as the European one, so I'm guessing that's the European one.

Developer Diary – He Shoots, He Scores!

Creating Authentic Penalty Kicks

Penalty Kicks play such a big part of World Cup that we wanted to make this feature as authentic as possible. When you get to the penalty shoot-out situation the pressure goes up and what we have tried to do is transfer that pressure to the user in the videogame. We have tried to take that feeling and make it visual.

For this game we developed the Penalty Kick Nerve System and it's meant to reflect the pressure of an actual World Cup penalty shootout. First off -- the sweet spot (your target area for the most accurate shot) will move around. As time goes on, the pressure mounts and the sweet spot will move faster and faster - and you will have to figure out the optimum time to attempt your kick.

If you're the keeper, you can try to throw the shooter off by jumping, waving your arms, touching the bar, etc. You can even send a vibration to your opponent’s controller while he's attempting the shot.

It's all meant to put more importance behind these situations.

Penalty Kicks are always an important part of the game, but in World Cup, it's even more important. Often times the game comes down to that one amazing shot, so we made sure we put a lot of emphasis on it in 2006 FIFA World Cup. Nobody wants to lose the world cup because of a lame penalty kick; it's such an important part of the game.

Advanced Shooting Mechanics

Our shooting model has completely changed - and this will be the thing that gamers will notice first. Your shot meter determines the shot elevation only. The longer you hold the button down, the higher the shot is. The power of your shot is determined by a number of different things, including player attributes, where you're positioned on the field, which foot you're shooting with (preferred or not), the ball height at point of contact, the amount of defensive pressure, and a modifier if you're using a star player.

For example, star players with a high "Finishing" skill will do well inside the penalty area, while the long shot specialists will do better outside the box! This makes it more important to get the ball to the right player for the job, and feels more like an accurate world cup match!

So make sure that if you're doing a long shot - pick a guy like Lampard or Ballack, and if you're in close -- go for Shevchenko or van Nistelrooy.

We've also tightened up the responsiveness of the players -- so they'll react faster when you hit the button or change direction. Our Ball physics are completely different now as well. I guarantee you'll see shots that go off the keeper or the bar that you've never seen before. It feels more realistic when you're seeing the keeper scrambling for the ball after a deflection that was misjudged. We've put in some new controls for your free kicks as well, giving you the option to take a run up and really hammer the ball as well as taking a tactical "regular" shot.

How crappy is the gameplay...OMG...I was watching one of the gameplay vids and it feels as if the ball has a magnet and the passes go perfectly to the player. The players also turn too quickly, almost at a 90 degree angle. All the players seem to be equally as good, not realistic enough for me :(

I could not agree more. Frankly I don't understand why we even bother, EA will never learn. How hard can it be to just pick up some stuff from PES? Just compare the two in gameplay and player movement.
Sure, this WC2006 will have great graphics, but who cares when you are bored with it after like an hour.

It's sad how every thread in here about a new game becomes again and again in a FIFA vs PES or kinda that.

It's true that FIFA games dont have good gameplay as PES, but in the other hand the so wanted "graphic realism" that 2006 WC shows, makes me want to buy this game.

And that's why I always buy FIFA and PES, both are good and I dont want to complain every day about what game is the best ...

I probably will most likely not buy it, but if I did, doesn't that give me a right to complain about the quality of the product? BTW, I never compared FIFA gameplay with PES, I just said that I did not like the ball physics of the game and the sharp turns that the players make.

Developer Q&A with Joe Nickolls

New penalty kicks mode

Penalty Kicks play such a big part of World Cup that we wanted to make this feature as authentic as possible. Historically penalty kicks have always played an important roll in the outcome of World Cup games and when you get to the penalty shoot-out situation the pressure goes up. What we have tried to do is transfer that pressure to the user in the videogame. In the real world you see the crowd and your teammates reacting to each situation and there’s pressure on each player to make the shot. We have tried to take that feeling and make it visual.

Gamers can now employ new moves to improve their chances of scoring or saving the shot. New distracting techniques for the keeper, including waving arms and moving along the goal line, make this really authentic. Even the shooting player can attempt to chip his shot to fool the goalkeeper.

The penalty mode incorporates a new ‘nerve bar’. Pressing the shot button to hit the sweet spot is the key to the perfect shot. However, the sweet spot now moves at varying speeds depending on the ability and experience of the player, making it hard or easier to hit the target.

New advanced shooting mechanics

In our other FIFA games when you are shooting you have to hold down the button to determine how hard you shoot the ball. What we found is that as you come in on goal users get excited and hold down the button far too long, blasting the ball over the bar, and sending it way off target. That was frustrating for users. In 2006 FIFA World Cup when you hold the shoot button down now it will control the angle of the shot. So if you hold the button down longer it will increase the angle of the shot and if you just tap the button the shot will be low. We take care of the power and kind of shot for you.

The shooting model has been much improved with context sensitive AI. Shooting now takes into account distance and angle from goal. Also pressure from defending players will have a direct effect on the success of the shot.

I guarantee that people who play World Cup will see shots they have never seen before because we’re giving assistance to make the shot more realistic. On top of that we’ve tuned the physics of the ball. The ball can now deflect off the keeper, hit the cross-bar then fall back in front of the goal giving the striker another chance to be knocked in and enabling more variety in the types of shots. You don’t want the user to become bored. You want diversity in the kinds of shots you take like sliding kicks, diving headers etc.

Signature stars

World Cup is like the greatest hits of football. Everyone comes out to see their heroes – the stars. In 2006 FIFA World Cup the star players will act and respond like they are suppose to act, the way they play in real life. Almost a hundred players in our game have what we call enhanced attributes. Players become world renown for their individual skills. Some players are known for their hard shots, some players are known to be playmakers, some players have blazing speed, and what we’ve done is enhanced the attributes of the players that are known for these things.

Wayne Rooney, for example, is a powerful player who can out muscle most players but he’s also fast and has an absolute laser of a shot. So in 2006 FIFA World Cup a player like Rooney can take a shot from far out and be very much on target because he is excellent striker. A player like Michael Owen has a fantastic turn of speed so if he, or a star player with similar attributes, traps the ball in a dangerous position, you will have a hard time catching him. Owen also has a great shot, and you’ll see that in the game. For Ronaldinho or Zidane, they are skilled players who will have amazing technique. Even if you’re not directly controlling those kinds of flair players, the CPU exploits their talents to devastating effect. In previous games against the CPU you can learn their tricks and learn what they’re doing and you can beat them every time because they have a pattern. In World Cup, not only can the user pull off the star player moves but the CPU can do that move as well.

Just like in real life, a handful of the stars in the game have signature moves that instantly differentiate them from other players. Beckham and Roberto Carlos both have remarkable freekick animations. Ronaldinho is famous for this ‘flip flop’ feint that he uses to beat defenders.

Star players are also readily identifiable because they have a star over their head. Nearly every nation has one or more remarkable players in their ranks. For instance, Totti from Italy, Landon Donovan from the US and Pavel Nedved from Czech Republic, among many more are great players and are noted for their outstanding contribution to their teams.

Calibrating star players’ individual skills

What we did to calibrate these enhanced attributes for our stars was to increase their individual skill rating in the areas where they were head-and-shoulders better than other players. The players who are selected to play for their national teams are obviously good players in themselves. However, to really differentiate the star players and make them stand out we made sure their attributes reflected their exceptional ability.

Once we assigned numerical values to each player’s attributes, we tested and re-tested these players to obtain the right balance to the point where players aren’t invincible and can be counteracted.

Superstars and their appearance

When dealing with North American leagues, NHL, NFL, NBA, and the NCAA you sign a license and with it come a yearbook with digital photos of all the players. This is not the case with international sports like football. For each of the players in our game it’s all down to the hard-work of our artists to re-create their individual appearance. We hunt down publicity photos, new photos of the guys, any kind of reference material we can possibly get, and then we begin to build the player’s head. The cool thing about EA is that we don’t just take a photo of someone’s face and map it on a model. It’s more like the amazing artists at EA sculpt the model and sculpt the head for the players starting from a blank canvas.

Other tricks we use to help users identify players in the game are to make player characteristics slightly more enhanced than they actually are. So a player like Pavel Nedved, who is known for his long blonde hair, will have slightly longer more pronounced hair to make him more easily identifiable from a distance. It’s almost larger than life.

For these stars you need to be able to see these details. You have to be able to see Edgar Davids’ ponytail bouncing around when he’s running down the pitch. It’s one thing to look really good close up, it’s another thing when you’re playing at a gameplay angle from far out that you can see who these players really are.

New advanced passing mechanic

The passing mechanic is more predictive than it used to be. The through-pass has been made more accurate so that if your player is good at the through-pass, he will be better at executing this in gameplay. If you see a player running up the wing and you anticipate where the opening will be, you can hit the through-pass ahead of this player and he’ll run onto the ball and control it. You’ll find passing more accurate in this game because the AI works intelligently so that your players behave realistically and avoid novice mistakes, choosing the right angles and the strength of the pass.

Global Challenge

Global Challenge is a way to further the gameplay experience and make 2006 FIFA World Cup a longer-lasting game. We looked back at 2002 FIFA World Cup and what everyone on our team agreed on was that it wasn’t long enough. It needed to be a longer more fulfilling game to play.

In addition to qualifying for the World Cup or competing for the World Cup, we created a new gameplay mode called Global Challenge. We began to look at past World Cups and decided there were some magical moments that people all over the world have never forgotten. These are the real classic moments. We took some those historical scenarios and re-created them in game, enabling users to play in the scenarios using modern teams to relive and perhaps change history.

We have this cool new 3-dimentional globe that’s always on the screen and as you overcome your challenges it will be updated with your team color. As you progress through the scenarios you’ll be given points which can be taken to the store to buy all sorts of cool stuff, whether it’s a classic player, a kit, a new ball or a feature that will enable you to alter gameplay. Some of the gameplay rewards we offer through this challenge include playing the game at super-speed, without referees, or even having invisible walls around the pitch so you can execute bank passes.

Gameplay

2006 FIFA World Cup is about five times the size of the previous version. It has five times the number of teams, five times the amount of players, seven times the number of stadiums to play in and it’s a much, grander game. The one thing that I want people to feel when they pick up this game is that this is not just a ‘coat of paint’ game. This game has an engine that feels and plays different. Some people may think that this is just an event product, with a World Cup logo on it and that it’s the same old thing. It absolutely is not. This is game is a fun experience that really captures the excitement and authenticity of the real World Cup.

With the Xbox 360 we have figured out how to use this machine and we’ve found a way to make our players look better, the game load faster, and we’ve made it more responsive. As you spend time with something you become more familiar with it, and as we spend more time with the next-gen consoles we become more familiar with what we can get out of it.

As far as gameplay goes, when people pick up this game they’ll notice that we’ve really been listening to the feedback we have received on our FIFA titles. We go to all kinds of websites and forums and we read what people are asking. When they say things like “I sure wish they’d do this…” it takes everything in me not to email them back and say “Hey, guess what? We are!” People are asking about teams…we have 127. They are the real teams, with the real guys, with no placeholders. They wanted the stadiums to be awesome, and they are. We have all 12 of the official German stadiums, as well as two more stadiums from each zone, so that’s another 12 stadiums. We have songs from all over the world, as well as crowd sound effects specific to their location. We have streamers, confetti, fireworks… it’s basically a sonic wall of sensory stimulation.

Festival atmosphere in the stadiums

The stadiums that will be used in Germany have a lot of history. Some of them have been around for a hundred years, and they hold a lot of passionate football fans. It’s just incredible and these stadiums need to be treated with the respect and attention to detail that they deserve. So we sent people out to take photos of these buildings, and we worked with FIFA to get it right. We haven’t made a World Cup game for four years and we’ve put a lot into this game.

They metion here: http://www.eaplay.com/australia/news/fifaworldcupgermany/ that there are stadiums from each qualifying region, so I think we can expect plenty of stadiums, probably most from Fifa 06 and a few new ones. I'm hoping Telstra Stadium in Sydney will be there.

quite possibly, but on the other hand they have made Telstra for Rugby games so it wouldn't be hard for them, also they will be looking for strong sales in Australia since this is our first world cup for 32 years... we will see i guess.

It seems to me that overall as a group they miss the point. i mean to build a 10 millon dollar motion capture room and just have local staff kick around a ball is horrible. i never knew why they didn't just have motion capture from either real game footage or real players? It might cost money but hey they did spend 10 mil on the studio right? Plus the AI department doesn't even refrence any real matches it just relys on it's computers determination on where the ball goes? i mean they should lokk at real footage?! I am not hopeful but i'll still get it as I'm a football game whore....:lui:

2006 WC Developer Diary 3

Developer Diary #3
2006 FIFA World Cup - Global Challenge

We bring you exclusively thanks to Electronic Arts the lastest developer diary, which focuses on one of the game modes in "2006 FIFA World Cup": Global Challenge. Here you will find further information about it and the full list of matches included in this mode.

In 2006 FIFA World Cup, EA SPORTS introduces a new game mode called Global Challenge that recreates 40 classic moments in FIFA World Cup history using modern teams. Users are placed into these classic moments to see if they can re-write history and earn rewards to unlock legendary players and classic apparel.

Producer Joe Nickolls on Global Challenge:
The Global Challenge mode is another way to play the game that only presents a real challenge for gamers but it’ll resonate with World Cup fans around the globe.

We began to look at past World Cups and decided there were some magical moments that people all over the world have never forgotten. We took some these historical scenarios and re-created them in game, enabling users to play in the scenarios using modern teams to relive and perhaps change history.

The further you progress through the scenarios, the more reward points you earn which can be taken to the store to redeem against all kinds of cool stuff, whether it’s a classic player, a kit, a new ball or a feature that will enable you to alter gameplay. Some of the gameplay rewards we offer through this challenge include playing the game at super-speed, without referees, or even having invisible walls around the pitch so you can execute ‘bank’ passes.

Years behind. Other football games have implemented this years ago.

Could you tell me what English stadiums are on the game and if there are any additions of any stadiums in any countries (other than the german ones)? Also, if you could...could you get a screenie of Wales vs Ireland kits? THANKS again! :)

no problem ...

No English stadia have been included as far as I can tell from the "Friendly" mode ... the only British stadium is the Millenium ...

Could you please post some screens of the dutch team and of Edwin van der Sar's face? Thanks in advance!

Alex has that Van der Sar face up ... it hasn't changed since FIFA 06 ... but you'll be happy to know that Lanzaat, Nigel De Jong and a few other new specific faces have been included ... ORANJE is the team I support, so I'll post plenty of SSs of them ...

Can you post a pic of the Argentine National Team with Messi, Riquelme, Tevez, and Sorin?

Jamaica, mon... I haven't a clue when the game will be available here... :(
I want to know of we get generic kits or the real thing...
maybe a menu and an ingame...

Cheers!

Holland looks great Xifio, maybe when you reach World Cup you could take some SS of goal celebrations.

I hope this game's celebrations be at least similar to WC 2002 celebration, damn they were very, very emotional ... when you scored a goal in the Final, the celebration can almost make you cry :$

Xifio

o ye, celebrations are really diverse and passionate! I mean they've made the whole thing really dramatic ... but you'll see what I mean when you play the game ...

Compared to FIFA 06 the Australian's faces look great.

Kewell, Cahill, Viduka have all definately have upgrades from fifa 06, they're looking nice.

Schwarzer and Emerton have specific faces for the first time, Schwarzer is an obvious choice for a new face, but Emerton is a little suprising - really I'd be suprised to see him start more than 1 game at the World Cup, I'd rather have seen Neil or Grella get specific faces. Or Bresciano, if he doesn't already have one.

Starting 11 could be worse, but Bresciano at LM... what the? Also Cullina should probably be in their, while I'd say Kewell will be playing more in midfield, on the left, with Viduka the only Striker.

But Overall it it looks okay, thanks for posting the pics!

By the Way, No I didn't know that the lowest mountain in the world is Mt Wycheproof - but what's the definition of a mountain anyway...

By the Way, No I didn't know that the lowest mountain in the world is Mt Wycheproof - but what's the definition of a mountain anyway...

Mountain: "a landmass that projects conspicuously above its surroundings and is higher than a hill"

Hill: "a usually rounded natural elevation of land lower than a mountain"

therefore, the answer to your question is: nobody knows! :fool:

Check it out here: http://hosted.filefront.com/facuf11 :jambo:
Also you have another great argentina and international players faces, from this facemaker that has a thread in this forum. (if you are gonna to use those faces in FIFA WC, yo have to convert them to 1gf).
See ya.

PS: Don't make the same question in 2 different threads... It just make the people in this forum get confused (And that includes me)
