I'll kill myself if Portugal doesn't win (H)
should be a good match, we're through so there's little pressure on us....I hope Scolari fields some "bench" players to see what they can do.
I see us winning anyway, because there's no way I'd like to disappoint Homer!
still a draw should be fine, we get to top the group and hopefull avoid Argentina and Mexico goes through aswell (Y)
2-1
Simão (trademark fk), Maniche (long range cracker)
Marquez (header off a corner)
Virgo 19-06-2006, 02:44:PM I'm expecting at least a draw even if we'll play without a lot of starters and even if it would start WW3 in Portugal streets if Angola win their game.
bmpv666 19-06-2006, 02:55:PM that video is just
most likely Portugal is going to play the reserves in this match, and that's why i think we are going to win it. you see, those guys on the bench are dying to get a chance to show their skills (or lack of in some cases...) in this world cup, so they will even eat the grass if they have too (H)
i bet 2-1 to Portugal
btw, that stadium brings back good memories (Y)
MaSsiVe 19-06-2006, 03:03:PM btw, that stadium brings back good memories (Y)

And yeah, I will take a tie at whatever cost. If we can win the game then so be it but I would be more than satisfied if we get one point from this. Scoring the first goal of the game would really ease the pressure we'll have going into the game.
Portgual for the win, can't see the Mexican defence holding up against Deco, Figo and Pauleta (oh, and Ronaldo (H) )
Could be high scoring though.
STML1 19-06-2006, 04:05:PM I'll happily welcome a boring 0-0 tie. Half-ass Portugal, please.
Tiago_10 19-06-2006, 04:14:PM Portgual for the win, can't see the Mexican defence holding up against Deco, Figo and Pauleta (oh, and Ronaldo (H) )
Could be high scoring though.
According to some reports Deco, Ronaldo, Pauleta won't play (because they have a yellow card) and Figo should be given a rest.
I read in some site that Scolari will probably rest Carvalho and Meira too. Meaning there will be a R.Costa-Caneira CB duo :|
So I guess Mexico has more chances if that does happen.
Virgo 19-06-2006, 04:22:PM Meaning there will be a R.Costa-Caneira CB duo :|
hahaha (H) quality! we're gonna finish 2nd.
Scolari won't want to finish second. I expect the usual starting lineup with maybe 2 or 3 players rested. Personally, I'd like Angola to pull off a miracle.
Luis Ah-Hoy 19-06-2006, 06:01:PM I read in some site that Scolari will probably rest Carvalho and Meira too. Meaning there will be a R.Costa-Caneira CB duo :|
I'd prefer Boa-Morte and Petit as CB's... :|

What formation does Mexico use exactly? 5-2-3, 3-4-3???
ManU2000 19-06-2006, 08:25:PM What formation does Mexico use exactly? 5-2-3, 3-4-3??? With the formation that Paul put up, its a 5-2-3 with the wingbacks going forward. It changes during the game though, we usually play a 5-3-2.
Wow, 3 CBs! We play a 4-5-1 that in reality is a 4-3-3 since Figo and Ronaldo are both attacking wing fowards. It should be a really good game, cause I know you guys won't just sit back and defend....right?
ManU2000 19-06-2006, 08:41:PM It should be a really good game, cause I know you guys won't just sit back and defend....right? We better not, we can't afford the let the other game decide whether we move on or not. We have to win especially if we want to avoid Argentina.

It is 3CBs but the RCB (most of the time Marquez) usually goes up so at times we're only defending with 2 CBs and maybe a DM, everyone else attacks. Our wingbacks are where ever the balls at, if its up front, so are they, etc.
jackdaw21 19-06-2006, 09:21:PM Instead of starting M. Mendez, why not start el gringo castro?

Thats whar im saying!
ManU2000 20-06-2006, 12:21:AM That first formation that Shiryu posted would be great even though I would probably prefer to play with two forwards instead of one. If Torrado plays on Wednesday I might just kill myself.
jackdaw21 20-06-2006, 01:12:AM Shiryu's formation... just WOW
Mexican fans, you may be in luck.
From Soccernet.com
Scolari set to rest Portugal's cautioned five
Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has confirmed he is to rest all five players who have received a yellow card during the World Cup for Wednesday's final Group D clash with Mexico.
Scolari, speaking in a press conference at the Veltins Arena, revealed that the five players - Cristiano Ronaldo, Nuno Valente, Costinha, Deco and Pedro Pauleta - would not feature at all in the match against Mexico who need a point to be certain of pipping Angola to the second qualification spot from Group D.
'The only changes will be the five players who are on a yellow card,' said Scolari.
'They won't play one minute of the match even if Mexico are winning 30-0.'
Portugal need a draw to be certain of topping the group but have already qualified for the last 16 where they will play either Argentina or Holland.
It didn't help the Germans, though in Euro2004 when our B team beat them 3-0. Either way our B team should be able to make this an interesting match.
Johnny_Big 20-06-2006, 05:26:PM Our B team has what it takes to do it.
Paulo Ferreira over N.Valente
Simao over Ronaldo
Petit over Costinha
Tiago over Deco
Nuno Gomes over Pauleta
This team is enough to secure a good result and the first spot imo.
Our full B team has what it takes to win the match, but will they play well together as a team. Either way it should be interesting. I really don't care if we win or lose. Rest for the Argentina/Holland game we face is more important.

Ferreira(Chelsea)--Meira(Stuttgart)--Costa(Porto)--Caneira(Valencia)

MaSsiVe 20-06-2006, 05:49:PM I was forgeting Viana was in the squad :$
that lineup would be fine by me (Y)
Vinnie Jones 20-06-2006, 05:57:PM That´s a reasonable line up. I don´t really care about this match, you wanna know why? Because a guy in Coimbra who´s the new mix of Zandinga and Gabriel Alves has told me today that Holland will beat Argentina. That´s guaranteed, Jack!
Edit: Forgot the complementary "hur hur hur"
Luis Ah-Hoy 20-06-2006, 06:00:PM Meira and Costa as CB's... that's scary! :|
bmpv666 20-06-2006, 06:06:PM our B team will beat Mexico, i'm sure about that :ewan:
you see, if Ronaldo, Figo, Deco and company were to play tomorrow, most likely these players would refrain from hard plays to avoid injurys, yellow cards and so on.
but our B guys have nothing to loose, and everything to win! to most of them it will be the only chance they'll have during this WC. and i bet they are eager to grab that chance with both hands, and make the most of it. remember Portugal-Germany in Euro2000? :jap:
OK, forget the last lineup I posted. 'The only changes will be the five players who are on a yellow card,' said Scolari.
This is our most probable lineup, based on Scolari's comments.
--------------Ricardo----------------
Miguel----Meira----Carvalho---Ferreira or Caneira
---------------Petit-----------------
---------Tiago-------Maniche--------
--Figo----------------------Simao---
------------ NunoGomes-------------
::shinji:: 20-06-2006, 10:56:PM I prefer Nuno Gomes to Pauleta anyway, he get's more involved in the set up rather than just wait for the tap-in like Pauleta always seems to do. I'm pretty sure that's why he completely dissapears against teams with decent defences..
Virgo 20-06-2006, 11:01:PM I f*cking hope he doesn't start Postiga :kader:
Johnny_Big 20-06-2006, 11:01:PM Meira + Costa? Olympics 2004 anyone?
Madeira 20-06-2006, 11:08:PM Screw Nuno Gomes, he's a freakin' ballerina on the field - I'd take Pauleta over him anyday.
As for Costa, **** guys, most of you are too critical, why is everyone hating on him all of a sudden, I know he blows, but still, give him a chance to prove his worth. Tomorrow will be his opportunity. I don't understand how everyone hates on him when he hasn't really done anything phucked up thus far. If he does, then bash him, but give him the benefit of the doubt first.
Luis Ah-Hoy 20-06-2006, 11:14:PM It seems that Boa-Morte will play as left-back... Scholari has been trying him in that position, in training, at good effect!
Madeira 20-06-2006, 11:25:PM I'm looking forward to seeing Boa Morte play tomorrow :rockman: :rockman:
Virgo 20-06-2006, 11:28:PM By Scolari words I doubt Ricardo Costa is starting tomorrow, and btw drop it. He had loads of chances to prove his worth at Porto and youth NTs and he never did.
In fact I can't think of one player who had so many chances in such a short career.
Last time Scolari tried Boa Morte at Left back we lost the game because of it. The guy is not even a midfielder... he's a left forward, he can't defend.
I'd start Nuno Gomes in the AMC spot if I had a good striker to play in front of him like Joao Tomás. In this case playing Postiga would be like playing with 10 men. Therefore Tiago/Maniche it is.
I hope Scolari rests Figo so he's ready to kick ass in the weekend and hope he keeps the Meira + Carvalho partnership. Those guys need as much time as they can to gel.
Bam-Bam 20-06-2006, 11:49:PM I'm not impressed by either team, however, Portugal 2-1 over Mexico :mexican:
Luis Ah-Hoy 21-06-2006, 12:03:AM I think that tomorrow (today, actuallly), Boa-Morte will prove wrong the critics... (H)
El Diablo Rojo 21-06-2006, 01:09:AM I want to play Portugal in the second round.:jap:
Mexico will win 2-1.:jambo:
Parasol 21-06-2006, 02:01:AM I want to play Portugal in the second round.:jap:
then just lose your game
big al 21-06-2006, 04:38:AM i really like the starting lineup for mexico ; very aggresive ; they wont let portugal breath trustme; that is going to be the diference in the game; bravo and kikin are going to help alot comming down midfield;also thats why they are putting marquez in the midfield ; to shut down everything that passes by ; and if many of you portuguese fans seen his past 2 games you can pretty sure agree with me he can do it. 1:0 2:0 mexico
jackdaw21 21-06-2006, 06:01:AM I'm praying that Mexico does not start Torrado :boohoo:
INFESTA 21-06-2006, 09:28:AM I think the reserves will give Mexico a tough time. They sure want to prove they got what it takes to be a first option, and you know what? Most of them could easily be a first choice: Simão, Paulo Ferreira, Nuno Gomes... these are quality subs, man. (Y)
Still think Angola has a chance! (Y) They'd be a great match-up for either Argentina or Holland (to injure their star players, of course).
And I'll be working during the game, goddamn. :nape:
Virgo 21-06-2006, 09:59:AM it seems Postiga is going to start :kader:
INFESTA 21-06-2006, 10:05:AM Argentina it will be, then. :jap:
::shinji:: 21-06-2006, 10:39:AM I can honestly say, I'm not too concerned about the result here. Whether we play Holland or Argentina, it'll be a very tough game either way, no preferences.. :(
Kibe Kru 21-06-2006, 11:08:AM Just watched Scolari in an interview. It was "interesting"
Scolari: "There were some strong words, in the sense of come on, let's go there and win it all. I said there are 4 more matches, and that we can lose one of them (against Mexico)."
Well, if they're gonna win it all, there are 5 more matches, right? Mexico, then rounds of 16, 8, semis and final.
Johnny_Big 21-06-2006, 11:29:AM Scolari (H)
Mata mata :fool:
Sevillista 21-06-2006, 11:30:AM You beat me to the video :shades:

But even though Nuno Gomes was injured for some time, I'd like to see him play today.

Luis Ah-Hoy 21-06-2006, 02:49:PM good game. attack at full.
C. ronaldo not even on the bench? :kader:
C. Ronaldo, Deco, Pauleta, Nuno Valente and Costinha will not take part in this game.... they're being spared for the next round, because they all have one yellow card...
BTW, this is a good Portugal "B" Team, but Meira makes that defence looks very average indeed... he's slow and very insecure! :nape:
Caneira, Simão and Postiga are playing well! (Y)
MaSsiVe 21-06-2006, 02:50:PM man what a great first half (Y)(Y)(Y)
we could have easily made it 3-0, and then Mexico could have easily made it 2-2.
we are playing quite well, but Postiga is f'cking useless (you can't be serious about him, Luis). on the other hand Maniche, Simao, Figo, are doing great!
hoping for a goalfest in the second half, neither team has anything to lose :rockman:
Johnny_Big 21-06-2006, 02:52:PM Meira is playing well Luis. The whole defence isn't very connected to each other.
By the way, from what I saw in this 1st half...we are a better team than the Mexicans.
Where was Caneira in the Mexican's goal? :kader:
However, those Mexicans got to be the most dangerous team in set pieces in the whole WC. Imagine with Borgetti there...Fonseca is enough to cause havoc in the whole defence.
Still, I'm happy. :fool:
Virgo 21-06-2006, 02:53:PM Portugal's defence has been good with balls through the ground but absolute rubbish dealing with crosses.
Portugal are playing better and could be up by 3 already but that would be harsh for Mexico who have played well in the last 10 minutes of the first half.
GET POSTIGA OUT OF THE FIELD FFS :kader: :kader:
Fernandez 21-06-2006, 02:54:PM However, those Mexicans got to be the most dangerous team in set pieces in the whole WC.
:cough: Sweden :cough:
gasper000 21-06-2006, 02:55:PM Fonseca 2-1 ... they're keeping their chances right now and Angola - Iran 0-0 :kader:
Angola need to beat Iran 3-0 so they can qualify
I don't think that may happen.!
Johnny_Big 21-06-2006, 02:55:PM Btw, what the hell are Postiga and Tiago doing on the field?
Maniche best player so far.
STML1 21-06-2006, 02:56:PM That was a horrible start. Most likely Rafa's worst game I've seen him play, why the **** handle the ball in the box?! Stupid. After the second goal Mexico decided to wake up, but Portugal is doing a good job of freezing the game. It's really frustrating to watch when we play like this. Basically gave two goals in the first two attacks.
LaVolpe needs to take out Pineda and/or Mendez, all they've done is give the ball away or "foul" Maniche's diving ass. Castro and Guardado would work really well here, but I doubt that'll happen.
MaSsiVe 21-06-2006, 02:57:PM took too long to read a diving complaint :boohoo:
Luis Ah-Hoy 21-06-2006, 02:58:PM Caneira is playing better than Meira... Meira is once again showing that he's very insecure, and he gave away a needless Free Kick... Caneira is doing well "nas dobras", etc... he may have been careless in the Mexican goal, but he played well...
I fear Meira will prove me right, sooner or later... i just hope he doesn't! We're getting near the crucial part of this Tournament... :(
STML1 21-06-2006, 02:58:PM Well, I would have not said anything, but that second goal was created off Maniche's dive. So obviously I'm frustrated.
Johnny_Big 21-06-2006, 02:59:PM Caneira gave the goal to Mexico. How can he be better so far than Meira? Meira is doing his best game of the WC so far, don't get me wrong...
MaSsiVe 21-06-2006, 03:00:PM I agree Meira is doing well.
gasper000 21-06-2006, 03:02:PM anybody watching Iran vs Angola ?

Portugal are sleeping a bit in this second half, and Mexico deserved the draw at least... good to see Boa-Morte getting a taste of the action, though! :)

LuckyStrike 21-06-2006, 03:52:PM And as you typed, he passed by 4 Mexican defenders, almost creating a goal situation for Portugal! ;)
Ya I saw that. Great play. I was hoping he would finish it in style.
lil_kewell 21-06-2006, 03:53:PM So both mexico and Portugal qualify for next round, that was a shocker of a second half both teams missed easy chances and it looked like either of them will gave a **** about the game, which was very dangerous of Mexico as Angola could of made them pay.
Johnny_Big 21-06-2006, 03:54:PM Hay guyz. Win.
Portugal made sh*t the whole second half. But the next games there won't be place to do ****. We also got lucky with Bravo missing the penalty. And that defence...omg...where is the defensive line...? Caneira played really bad. Thank god we have Valente.
Whatever, next!
Luis Ah-Hoy 21-06-2006, 03:56:PM I didn't like Portugal in the second half... they were lazy and careless, and were lucky not to conceed a goal...
Ricardo Carvalho played well, like he always does (H) ... Simão and Meira also did well in this second half!
And Nuno Gomes didn't bring anything new to the team, just like Postiga!
Boa-Morte should've been subbed in sooner than that...
Virgo 21-06-2006, 03:57:PM hahaha I bet we bored everyone to death (H)
anyway Mexico deserved the draw because they tried to win much more than us in the 2nd half. We gave our usual half-assed effort with a lot of passes to the GK and between the defence and managed to snatch a win. Although the Mexican attackers had like 3 ridiculous dives in the box.
Simao was the best player on the pitch today by a mile. And I hope Postiga never plays a minute for the NT again.
Btw shut up with Boa Morte he was rubbish. He would have been sent off had he been subbed in 10 minutes earlier.
Johnny_Big 21-06-2006, 03:58:PM I have to disagree. That was Maniche. Simão comes close.
MaSsiVe 21-06-2006, 03:58:PM bullsh't second half from us, we were a man up for most of it ffs :kader:
about the ref, he f'cked up badly twice:
there was no intentional handball by Miguel, and Ferreira fouled Bravo in the penalty area (stupidly, but he did).
so I don't think any of the teams can complain about being f'cked by him.
Mexico did not deserve to lose the match, major respect to them.
we were better in the first half, they were better in the second.
MoM Simão no doubt, he did it all:
great runs down the flanks, 1 goal, 1 assist, 1 blatant dive (H)
Caneira was our worst player no doubt, our left side of defense was an absolute hole....
anyway we're through, and that's what matters.....bring on the Argies/Dutch :mrpimp:
STML1 21-06-2006, 04:00:PM Really dissappointing. Bravo blew the penalty off a dive. Perez dives again and gets sent off. Rafa played so bad, we should be happy we only lost 2-1. Oswaldo made a couple of mistakes late in the game, too. Everyone played bad, besides Salcido, he was the only one who seemed to not be wanting to lose.
So yeah, we lose to Portgual's reserves, and now we play Netherlands or Argentina. We're ****ed.
mexicanoyosoy 21-06-2006, 04:00:PM its incredible, mexico plays too much better, and portugal only attacked many times, but make the goals.
and the referee dont marked a foul, in the area.
******* referee
Johnny_Big 21-06-2006, 04:01:PM Mexico dives.
Mexico misses penalties.
Mexico loses to Portugal B team.
Erm...what?
MaSsiVe 21-06-2006, 04:03:PM btw besides one good run, Boa Morte did crap every time he touched the ball.
(no Luis, I'm not picking on you (H))
Luis Ah-Hoy 21-06-2006, 04:04:PM Btw shut up with Boa Morte he was rubbish. He would have been sent off had he been subbed in 10 minutes earlier.
Your comment is rubbish...
He only played for 10 minutes, and despite the stupid yellow card, he made 2 good runs thru the defenders (and one of them did create a dangerous situation for Mexico), and he was recovering some balls back there...
Btw... you shut up! ;)
MaSsiVe 21-06-2006, 04:05:PM its incredible, mexico plays too much better, and portugal only attacked many times, but make the goals.
and the referee dont marked a foul, in the area.

haha yeah there was a penalty on Bravo, but why don't you mention the bullsh't penalty given against us?
you really can't complain about the ref....
Shiryu 21-06-2006, 04:07:PM A few confirmations from what I already knew.
- Lavolpe will not coach ever again in Mexico.
- Mendez, Guille, and Garcia where a useless waste of space.
- We really, really, no matter what Lavolpe ever again says, need a 10 like Blanco or Bofo'.
- Bravo is too inexperienced to be starting on a World Cup.
A game lost by Lavolpe. We could had atleast tied this one, he had the players on the bench to do it, and he showed just how much cr*p he really is. Castro is not the kind of player that comes in and changes a game!, Guardado is.
Pray to God Mexico! that we do not get humiliated by Argentina on the next game. :nape:
Luis Ah-Hoy 21-06-2006, 04:07:PM btw besides one good run, Boa Morte did crap every time he touched the ball.
(no Luis, I'm not picking on you (H))
It's all good Massive...
at least you have a nice way to express your opinions... :)
Virgo 21-06-2006, 04:07:PM P. Ferreira made a stupid penalty yes but the ball was already out when he did it. He was lucky because that would have been one of the most retarded penalties. ever.
Shiryu 21-06-2006, 04:09:PM Oh, Good Luck Portugal. (Y)
You guys do have a good, and solid team.
My mistake, for thinking otherwise.
STML1 21-06-2006, 04:11:PM There is no room for complaining about the ref. He messed up by giving the penalty off Perez' dive, but then Perez tried the same after the miss and got sent off. And it was very much justified. Yes, Bravo was fouled in the box, but after you see someone dive twice in the box, you're most likely not getting a penalty called. No matter how clear it is.
#1 Stunna 21-06-2006, 04:12:PM What a daY for Marquez to have his worst game for Mexico. EVEYRONE played like sh*t.
Bravo. :nape: I pray to god Borgetti is fit for the next game, and wtf is up with so many changes in 3 games. It seems like Lavolpe wants us to fu*k up. But the blame cant be placed entirely on him, Kikin cant control the ball, Mendez and Pineda are useless, PArdo couldnt pass to save his life, that wasnt Rafa Marquez out there, Bravo lost the ball so easily, FU*K YOU stupid ass piece of **** Luis Perez for diving when u have a yellow. It seems he already forgot what happened to him in the final vs Toluca. :nape:
I just thank Portugal for not caring, or else we wouldve gotten so many more goals shoved up our fuc*kin asses. So whos Argentina playin gin the quarter-finals then?
Shiryu 21-06-2006, 04:13:PM Perez dives again and gets sent off.
Yeah, but we knew that he does that.
That's why he shouldn't play that position.
You take him out of the area, and make him create plays and just pass the ball, that's what he's good at.
If we only had a coach...
Luis Ah-Hoy 21-06-2006, 04:15:PM Jose Fonseca = MoM
He was very lively in the first half, but not so impressive in the second...
But he's a good player, nonetheless! (Y)
MaSsiVe 21-06-2006, 04:16:PM "I'll kill myself if Portugal doesn't win" (H)
well, at least we know that Homer won't kill himself (H)
2-1
Simão (trademark fk), Maniche (long range cracker)
Marquez (header off a corner)
ok Simão scored from a penalty, and Maniche's cracker wasn't from longe range, plus Mexico's goal was a header off a corner yes but by Fonseca.
still, kind of a good prediction considering that I made it difficult for myself with the details.
heh :(
Johnny_Big 21-06-2006, 04:17:PM Yeah, I was about to say that, he surprised me. Great player...
Luis Ah-Hoy 21-06-2006, 04:20:PM 2-1

whatta prediction! :|
MaSsiVe 21-06-2006, 04:24:PM wasn't that good :$
Boa Morte did ok for the few minutes he played. Take it easy on the guy. Postiga on the other hand was awefull. Anyway, we still won with a half and half team. The job got done.
BTW I really thought Angola might pull off the miracle when they scored. Not bad from them only conceding two goals.
Luis Ah-Hoy 21-06-2006, 04:34:PM Boa Morte did ok for the few minutes he played. Take it easy on the guy.
Thank you Nuno... :)
jackdaw21 21-06-2006, 04:43:PM Mexico :kader: :kader: :kader:
This has to be the ****iest world cup of recent times for mexico. WTF is mendez and Pineda doing there!?? :boohoo:
And why the **** is Omar Bravo given the priority to take the penalty shot. You could just see it in his face how ****IN nervous he was throughout the whole game. Why not give to el kikin?? AT LEAST HE HAD A POSITIVE ATTITUDE.
jesus christ, the mexican NT is so frustrating. We have the players on the bench in order to tie it!!? Why the **** didn't he put guardado in?? he was ready to go.
I think it's time to go Old School with Ramon Morales, and El cabrito
dissapointing match
K3nzo 21-06-2006, 05:22:PM Again 1st 15 minutes were the best!! Great play on Maniche goal, and nice to see Figo playn again!!
Congrats boys, let's wait for Netherlands now!!
ManU2000 21-06-2006, 05:25:PM ******* hell, is it genetic that we can't score on a penalty or something? There was absolutely no need to hit it that hard. :kader: Screw it, we usually raise our game when we play big teams and if we couldn't do it today, there's no chance in hell we'll do it against either Holland or Argentina.
smoove 21-06-2006, 05:29:PM I like our chances against the netherlands, if we actually get to play them, that is. Good game in the first 45 minutes, we did what we needed to win this one. I'm starting to like Maniche's performaces at the WC so far, fine display by him today, he brought a lot of energy to the squad...
::shinji:: 21-06-2006, 05:30:PM Postiga & Caneira (a couple others too) have no place on this team, when is Scolari gonna wake up and stop calling sh!t players...
Good luck to Mexico in the next round, you played some decent football today.
Luis Ah-Hoy 21-06-2006, 05:37:PM I'd prefer Vaz Té, instead of Postiga....
jackdaw21 21-06-2006, 05:37:PM I feel sorry for the mexicans who are in germany right now. What a waste of money!! Especially that one guy who sold his house in mexico to go see Mexico in the world cup. :boohoo:
jimorrizon 21-06-2006, 05:40:PM Budweiser Man of the Match: Jose FONSECA (MEX)
21 June 2006
by FIFAworldcup.com
Mexican striker Jose Fonseca was named as the Budweiser Man of the Match after his country’s narrow 2-1 defeat against Group D winners Portugal. The front-man was recognised by FIFA’s Technical Study Group (TSG) after putting in an influential display at the sharp end of his country’s attack, particularly after Ricardo La Volpe’s team were reduced to ten men.
The Tricolor coach opted for the Cruz Azul hit-man over Guillermo Franco to partner Omar Bravo, hero of Mexico’s win over Iran, up front. Fonseca’s tireless performance ensured that the coach’s faith was not misplaced.
“Throughout the game, he was the hardest-working Mexican forward, always looking for a goal and trying to create chances for his team-mates,” commented TSG member, Hungary’s Gyorgy Mezey.
“He was a crucial player in how the game unfolded. He stood out for his individual play, but also for how much he worked for his team. He also scored a good goal, and almost squared the match for his team, after Mexico went down to ten men.”

First time I think that a player from the loosing team receives the man of the match....
::shinji:: 21-06-2006, 05:43:PM I'd prefer Vaz Té, instead of Postiga....
man they both suck, Postiga's useless in general and Vaz Té always looks like he's got cement in his boots.. :(
Joao Tomas is who should have been there, he's a true finisher and the top Portuguese scorer in the Liga. It's a crime IMO that Scolari left a player in such good form out of the line-up :|
MaSsiVe 21-06-2006, 05:48:PM I think Simão deserved MoM.
1 goal and 1 assist, plus he was a headache for the Mexican full-backs during the whole match.
not saying Fonseca didn't do good job too ;)
Filipower 21-06-2006, 05:50:PM what a stupid thing fonseca being MOM...i mean, against Ghana, Cech was definitely the best player and the award went to the best player in the winning team, and now the best player in the winning team(maniche), who did as much or more than fonseca throughout the whole game, doesn't take it....once again, fifa showing their love to us..
STML1 21-06-2006, 05:51:PM Maniche dissappeared in the second half, maybe that's why he didn't get it. I think Simao should have gotten it.
Eitherway, who cares. We lost. They won. Time to move on.
::shinji:: 21-06-2006, 05:59:PM ^ exactly, we both got bigger problems to deal with now
smoove 21-06-2006, 06:00:PM Joao Tomas is who should have been there, he's a true finisher and the top Portuguese scorer in the Liga. It's a crime IMO that Scolari left a player in such good form out of the line-up :|
without a doubt :nape:
Tiago_10 21-06-2006, 06:18:PM Postiga is so crap it's not even funny.. Caneira didn't do well at all.. Not that Meira is that much better.. Anyway I think we did some very nice plays in the 1st half. Simão should've defenetaly been the MOtM.
ronnifan9 21-06-2006, 06:28:PM Good for Fonseca, I'm pulling the most for this kid and finally got to show the "real" Kikin. (Y)
The team, next round I guess is good but Netherlands/Argentina is gonna be one hard cookie. I predicted a Netherlands win, maybe we have some secret plan against them since we played them in a friendly. (6) :fool:
bmpv666 21-06-2006, 06:53:PM man, that must have been the worst 2nd half i've ever seen from any team :|
our midfield completely vanished from the pitch, even when playing with one more player our midfield was inoperable :nape:
with one more player on the pitch we were unable to control the ball and the game, though Mexico players weren't making things easy, Portugal had the obligation to try to control the game at the very least!
this game somehow proved that when we finish the first half winning our second half is pure crap! the players relax, sit on the back, don't run, don't pressure the opponents, etc... :nape:
we won't go far playing like this, if the Mexican players were better at finishing we could have even lost this game today... :kader:
i'm very very very very (u get the point...) disapointed..................

big al 22-06-2006, 05:20:AM well well; we have a big package against argentina; i know we can beat hem ; but if mexico plays like in this last games i dont see it happening; i know that mexicos plays with heart; but if the world cup was awarded playing by heart we been champions long ago; but thats la la land ; this is winned by goals ; that mexico dont have ; they cant seem to finish the plays; the final touch; we dont have those final finishers ; and this been long time problem from mexico team ; iam very dissapointed ; cause marquez made me eat my own words; i thought we has going to be a key player in this game and for my surprise he was the worst; i mean wtf in wrong with this guy he seems to crap it all in key games; like 2002 game against USA when he was sent off ; and now his childish penalty marked against him ; i mean wtf he was thinking, the hand was so obvoius ; he mightest well been playing volleyball; and to top it all lavolpe sends bravo to take the penalty i mean did you guys see his face before he shot; he was ready to blow chunks because he was so nervious; and lets not forget luisito fuccking perez ; the referee mightest well give him a fuccking Oscar instead of a yellow; its like those 11 guys wake up in the morning before the game and planed to fucckit all up .
