O-car 19-06-2006, 04:34:PM Got this idea from the Movies forum.
Simply post here what CD's you last purchased/recieved. You can also, if you'd like, write a little critique for those CD's. This could possibly help those who'd like to expand the list of groups they listen to, and give people ideas of what to listen to next, if the CD they are interested in buying is any good. I'll get the ball rolling and start with the disc I recently bought, which is Meds by Placebo.

I had heard of this group before, but never really listened to them. There are two songs on this album that I'd heard before I bought it, Infra-red and Song to say goodbye, both of these songs are amazing and pursued me to check this group out. I have to say that I absolutely love this album, been pretty much listening to it back to back since I got it.
nice, just got the Maximo Park album; A Certain Trigger
"Signal and Sign" (2:25)
"Apply Some Pressure" (3:19)
"Graffiti" (3:05)
"Postcard of a Painting" (2:14)
"Going Missing" (3:41)
"I Want You To Stay" (3:44)
"Limassol" (3:42)

"Now I'm All Over The Shop" (2:23)
"Acrobat" (4:42)
"Kiss You Better" (2:05)
it aint bad actually, but the dude's voice annoys me a bit. Apply some pressure is still their best song.

It's probably their weakest album though. If you liked that one you'll go insane with Black Market Music. Though you could just pick up their singles collection instead of picking up all the albums, which is named Once More Time With Feeling.

adj137 19-06-2006, 05:13:PM Last CD i bought was an Elliott Smith collection -

16. Bye
it's not that good but i bought purely for the fact i can say that i own all Elliott Smith's stuff; his best albums by far are "Elliott Smith" and "Either/Or" - both are absolutely stunning.
Elliott Smith is amazing, and the best of his work is when its stipped down to its bare basics, i find that the Basement On the Hill work is as good if not better than some of the stuff on Figure 8.
http://www.elliottsmithbsides.com is a great website from demos and unreleased work of his, i recommend it to anyone looking from some decent acoustic music.
MaSsiVe 19-06-2006, 05:26:PM IMHO the best Placebo album still is the first one ("Placebo"), raw as I like it.
I can't get enough of songs like Come Home, Teenage Angst, 36 Degrees, Nancy Boy, I Know or Bruise Pristine.
I miss my teens :boohoo:

I haven't purchased this album, as its yet to be released. But I will buy it come August, for sure. About the album: nice change of pace from Cursive's usual aggressive style and just solid, overall. The use of the trumpet coupled with bits and pieces of Mid-Western influence is great.

Butcher the Song is quality :rockman: . I love the chorus - if you can call it one.
But the first 5 seconds of the song put me off it, so when i listen to it i move it after the begining build-up.After the 2 minutes the song goes into the part i really like, the "get out the butcher's knife.
The 'Cello and the other fairground music thingy really freaked me out one time when i was listening to it at 3am.

WAY too many brian jonestown massacre CDs, mostly from mid 90s. :( this was quite a while back, BUT I'm still recovering from the money thing...
BTW F*CK CDs that exceed the low 10 dollar range. hell, the reasonable (and righteous) artists know well enough to live off 9 bucks an album and not screw the mass.

yeah, most CD's are way over-priced in general, I still can't beleive it when I go to Best Buy or something and see some albums going for like $22 bucks, sometimes more. In this day and age that's just adding fuel to the piracy fire.
I like used CD shops myself, if you don't mind digging through boxes, sometimes you can find great stuff for only a few dollars
NottsSupporter 20-06-2006, 11:51:AM Yes, CD's are overpriced indeed. I don't buy any in shops over here (Sweden) 'cause they're so expensive, I just order online. When I lived in England I used to get them from Fopp, good deals there...most new releases would be around £8 and older stuff usually a fiver.

Yup, that'll be me.
I listen to basically everything that goes under the category "music".
how do you think SG's very own music trading ring will work out if I start it? it'd be semi-private (availability shown, join through invitation) with "obscure" label music (basically anything but main which has the intention to SUE). oh and of course, JUST music, no warez BS. there would also be a quality limit, of what format/bitrate would be used.
if any mods can give a go-ahead or members show some support for this, I think we can really make this work.

I mostly buy CDs on the Internet, it's much cheaper.
You should try www.cd-wow.net or www.music-wow.com, they are the cheapest I have found yet, but I don't know, if they deliver to Sweden. I think CD-Wow does, as they sell swedish CDs. I got a Petter CD from them. And they always send them via air mail, but no delivery costs.

totally agree, everyone bangs on about how cheap online is, but when HMV or MusicZone do sales, they do them good.
I mean with stuff like games, people "claim" to be doing sales, when they're all at the same price, but with CD's, you can get some amazing deals if you just wait around.
For mainstream stuff, the supermarkets have SHOT DOWN prices over the last five years. MusicZone and HMV consequently focus more on nicher stuff now, at good prices (Y)

Virgo 24-06-2006, 01:21:AM why the hell is everyone into Tool all of a sudden?
They're phenomenal but I cannot comprehend this sudden interest in a time when they release their weakest album. They must have hired a new marketing staff.
Anyway Aenima is one of the greatest albums of our time, so good buy.

I dunno man, but I've noticed that too. At least around here I think it's because they're actually getting radio play, just driving around to and from work these days I hear Tool at least a couple times.
Andreas 24-06-2006, 11:36:AM Yeah, I never really heard anything of them before, but only heard good things about them here and on some other forums, so I decided to buy "Ænima" to check them out.

After listening to "Ænima" for a while now, I wasn't really surprised how good "10 000 days" are. It has some amazing songs and a nice atmosphere about it. Nice cover art as well, with the goggles and everything. "Lateralus" is on it's way too ;)

I didn't really have any expectations to this album after having both "God Hates us all" and "Reign in Blood" in my collection before, but this one totally blew my mind! Some amazing guitar riffs and drum work here, and it's not as thrashy and speedy as Slayer usually is (which is a good thing IMO) :p

I love sifting through the bins at used record stores, I've found all kinds of great stuff doing that, even some really rare albums and imports. Always really cheap too... I rip them into max-quality MP3's with iTunes anyhow, but there's nothing like having the hard copy.

Blue Sky/Black Death: A Heap of Broken Images
http://www.mushrecords.com/album_art_front/MH243_AFf.jpg
"Blue Sky Black Death step on the scene with their double CD debut, A Heap of Broken Images. Comprised of producers Kingston and Young God, this San Francisco tandem explores the nether regions of hip-hop, meshing dark samples, vocal snippets and live intrumentation into an album that holds its mood from start to finish. The first CD consists entirely of dense instrumental music, while the second is structured around guest emcees. Jus Allah, Wise Intelligent (Poor Righteous Teachers), Sabac Red (Non-Phixion), Guru (Gang Starr), Chief Kamachi, A-Plus and Pep Love (Hieroglyphics), Rob Sonic, Virtuoso, Mikah-9 (Freestyle Fellowship), Awol One, and Holocaust (Wu-Tang) all appear. This deep line up of collaborations spans the spectrum of hip-hop sound with stirring cohesion."

Yossarian 30-10-2006, 11:28:AM Three albums that I bought over the past couple of months........I'd definitely recommend the Beck album, just recommend the Lemonheads one, and hesitantly recommend the Dj Shadow one, and maybe entirely not, if you don't happen to be a big fan of his to begin with.

Beck - The Information.
Elevator music
I think I'm in love with you
Cellphone's dead
Nausea
.......seriously, I'll go on listing the entire album as my favourite tracks save for "Movie Theme" if I keep on going like this........this album is just that solid both lyrically and instrumentally, man. It didn't hook me in on my first listen as I was driving back from the music store, but after just keeping it around in my car for a couple weeks, I decided to give it a second listen through while I was cruising about (not in the queer sense of the word) aimlessly one night, it just hooked me in.......hooked me in like the first time I burrowed myself inside of a couple of inches worth of vagina mudflaps, man. It now gets a full listen from me atleast once a week, man.

DJ Shadow The Outsider
This time (I'm gonna try it my way)........easily going down as one of my favourite tracks of 2006, man.
Seein thangs
Broken Levee Blues
Backstage Girl
The Tiger
You made it
The album is kinda disjointed and uninspired in some parts. I'm really not a big fan of the Hyphy/Crunk sound but Dave Banner and E40, whose comedic geniusness on the mic I've always appreciated, were both solid in their respective tracks.

Snow Patrol - Eyes Open I don't think that they're such a great band, they're more than decent but they're being overrated. Yup, I have O Silencio. In fact, I have all their albums. I love O Silencio but I think Lado B Lado A is my fav album. Definitely an awesome band, too bad they aren't big outside of Brazil.
Anyway I bought the new John Legend album, great album! the guy has talent.

Just got this CD off of Amazon, saw this news clip on TV and their performance on Leno. It's two brothers who's music is basically a mix of violin and hip-hop. Love the album, it's really something different. You should definitely cop one.

^ Probably the greatest mixtape I've ever heard. Talib Kweli, MF Doom, J Dilla, Common, Asheru, Black Star, Little Brother, etc, etc... Great show too, for those not familiar.

^ laid back, hip-hop influenced jazz. pretty good..
Yossarian 01-12-2006, 01:51:PM Bro, is there a way that you could link me up with the Boondocks mixtape? I'd really appreciate it greatly, bro.
Yossarian 06-12-2006, 12:43:PM WHOA!
This is one huge ass mixtape, bro........NNNNNIIIIICCCCEEEE!
So far I've only given the first track a listen and if this is a hint of what's to come.....then I'm AMPED, bro.

Yeah, it's full of good stuff for sure, enjoy. I'm really into tracks 11 & 12, I'm kinda partial to the laid back/chill type stuff..
Yossarian 06-12-2006, 12:59:PM Yeah, definitely. This is my first exposure to Asheru and I'm really impressed by his delivery and lyrical content.
Including Nag Champa into this track was definitely a good touch on the producer's part.
Safe to assume that you're a big Common fan pre-Electric Circus, yeah?
::shinji:: 06-12-2006, 01:07:PM Indeed, although there were a couple tracks on 'Electric Circus' that I really like (The Hustle, Aquarius), even though that album was kinda wack IMO. He redeemed himself with 'Be' though, that's for sure..
::shinji:: 10-12-2006, 02:11:PM just added to my ever growing hip-hop collection:

^ I've recently started to properly appreciate J Dilla for the great producer he actually was. I'd always heard good tracks that he was involved with but had no idea just how influential he really was thoughout all of hip-hop..
And speaking of Little Brother.. You probably already have it, but in the off chance you dont you should definitely get a copy of The Foreign Exchange - Connected. It's essentially Little Brother produced by Nicolay, such a great laid -back album.

Actually no, until the other day the only album of their I had was The Minstrel Show and I decided it was finally time to hear their other albums. This was the highest rated one before Minstrel Show on rapreviews.com.
::shinji:: 23-01-2007, 01:45:PM ah, well then I think you'd definitely be into that album. It's even more amazing after you hear how the album was actually made... I dunno, I don't want to overrate it or anything but it was one of my faves at the time it was released.

"Diverse's superior lyricism is combined with top-notch production courtesy of
a holy trinity of underground favorites: Prefuse 73, Madlib, and RJD2."
My new current favourite hip-hop album, I can't beleive it took me this long to find this. Impressive from start to finish in every way. Especially liking the Prefuse 73 produced tracks.. (Y)

"Intuition sees the world differently. He extracts humor from the mundane, locates heartache in humor, finds comfort in that heartache, and develops stress out of that same comfort. Where most would see a straight line, he tends to see a circle."
"Thought provoking independent hip hop. Intuition is a great lyricist, and Equalibrum provides a beautiful soundscape for him to rap over. The production value is phenomenal."
MaSsiVe 24-05-2007, 01:12:AM shinji dude, have you listened to Us3's latest album?
if I remember correctly you also fancy the band so do try Schizophonic, it's incredibly good IMHO.
Johnny_Big 24-05-2007, 01:19:AM Currently searching for Sonic Youth albuns, cause I'm getting a big fan of them. Maybe I'll wait for the release of Teen Age Riot in 12th of June, in a new edition and with lots of goodies!
And I will search for "Dirty" and "Rather Ripped" like mad (H)
MaSsiVe 24-05-2007, 01:25:AM Johnny you can easily get either of them at FNAC, even if they don't have it in the store you can always ask them to order the album from some other store in the country, or even from above although imports might cost you a few more €.

I didn't even know they had a recent album, haven't listened to them in a while. I checked out some tracks from that Schizophonic album on iTunes just now and it does seem good, I'll have to keep an eye out for that one..
Also, if anyone knows... I'm trying really hard to find a website to order the CD "Dyno - Dyno is Sol Waters" somewhere online but none of the places I usually buy from have it.. and so far the only online stores I've found with it available are in Germany or Japan and I'm not interested in paying fat-ass shipping charges.
I can get it from iTunes but I need a hard copy, so if you know any good online shops from Canada or the US that carry indy hip-hop, lemme know thanks..

One of the sweetest albums that I've had the pleasure of purchasing in the last couple of years.
If you're even remotely into Dino jr.....hell even if you despise them with a passion...buy it, man.
Yossarian 22-06-2007, 05:18:PM http://img376.imageshack.us/img376/7844/kingsofleonbecauseoftheim9.jpg
I realize that im always overusing the superlatives of this language and extoling this, that, or the other as the 'best'" or 'greatest", and most of the time, I'm really sincere about these proclamations, but I'm especially earnest about the quality of this fantastic album, man.
I've been meaning to purchase it for the last couple of months, but I just havent made the time to do so. Anyway, I got it last week and let it just lie there in the back seat of my car for the past several days, until I finally inserted it into the cd player last night on a long trip to visit some pals, and boy, let me tell yah, man. This just might be one of the finest driving albums ever created....certainly the best album that ive heard all year....maybe even last year.......the instrumentals are a perfect 10, and the brilliant and catchy lyrics arent that far behind imo. It's so good that it should come with a warning label saying that you shouldn't have it on while operating a vehicle, man....it's just so intoxicating and, and gets yer toes a tappin, head a bobbin', and mid-section a thrustin'.
Definitely gonna be on a lot of short lists for album of the year in my opinion.....sorta album that even the greats of yester-years would be proud of.
